When I was a kid, a tree grew in front of my home. At the age of 10, I was just tall enough to reach its lowest branch and lift myself into its embrace. I wasn’t the only climber.
Sometimes two or three of my friends would join me in the sycamore (无花果树), or in the maple down the street. Climbing trees allowed us to enter another world. In fact, it was a world with in a world: We took our imaginations with us into those heights, which by turns were a fortress, a pirate ship, a spaceship, or a mountain castle.
In my small Maine town there are some lovely maples, lindens, and oaks. Their branches spread wide, and they are strong enough for people to climb. But I have not yet seen a climber. Perhaps computer games have replaced tree climbing, or maybe the activity went the way of monkey bars (攀爬架), which came to be viewed as too risky and have largely disappeared from playgrounds.
It is a sad loss. I have always believed that, since low-hanging branches provide no benefit to the tree, they must be meant for the child. Robert Frost understood this when he wrote: When I see birches bend to left and right, I like to think some boy’s been swinging (摇摆,摆动) them. My only disagreement with Frost is his idea that tree climbing is an undertaking only for boys. Both boys and girls have what it takes to make a joyful ascent.
The campus of the university where I teach is lovingly landscaped with all sorts of trees. During a recent walk, I grabbed a branch and a moment later I was sitting on it. Then the memories came flooding back: The old friends, the long view of my neighborhood, and finally, the reluctance to return to earth when the parental call to supper came.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t hear the student calling to me from below. He asked what I was doing. I didn’t waste time on explanations. “Come on up,” I said. “The air’s fine.” But he only laughed, and waved me off. He didn’t know what he was missing.
56. What did the author and his friends benefit from climbing trees?
A. They were inspired to become astronauts.
B. They escaped the heavy burden of learning.
C. They became more flexible like monkeys.
D. They had greatly expanded their imagination.
57. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A. Explain the reasons for kids’ not climbing trees.
B. Describe the poor economy situation in Maine.
C. Expect monkey bars to be removed from playgrounds.
D. Analyze the good of computer games.
58. What does Robert’s poem prove?
A. Only boys like to swing the branches of birches.
B. The low-hanging branches are for children to play with.
C. The low-hanging branches are trees’ important parts.
D. Climbing trees can be replaced by computer games.
59. What does the underlined word in the 4th paragraph probably mean?
A. Climbing B. Playing C. Returning D. Jumping
60. What did the author think his student missed in the last paragraph?
A. The good memories of childhood.
B. The chance to breathe fresh air.
C. The fun of climbing trees.
D. The safety sense on earth.

Some people can sit outside all summer long and not suffer from mosquito bites, while others turn into an itchy (痒的) mess. It’s mostly about the invisible chemical landscape of the air around us. Mosquitoes take advantage of this landscape by using specialized behaviors and sensory organs to find victims by following the tiny chemical marks their bodies leave behind; specifically, mosquitoes rely on carbon dioxide to find their hosts.
When we breathe, the carbon dioxide from our lungs doesn’t immediately mix with the air, but temporarily stays in plumes (团状气流) that mosquitoes follow. “Mosquitoes start locating the plumes of carbon dioxide and keep flying upwind as they sense higher concentrations than the normal atmosphere.” said Joop van Loon, a scientist who studies insects. Using carbon dioxide, mosquitoes can lock onto targets from up to 50 meters away.
Things start getting personal when mosquitoes get about 1 meter away from a group of potential targets. At a short distance, mosquitoes take into account a lot of factors that vary from person to person, including skin temperature, the presence of water vapor (水 蒸 气 ) and color. Scientists think the most important factor mosquitoes rely on when choosing one person over another is the chemical compounds (化合物) produced by the colonies of microbes (微生物菌落) that live on our skin.
These chemical smells are complex, including upward of 300 different compounds, and they vary from person to person based on genetics and environments. “If you compare a father and daughter in the same household, there can be differences.” said Jeff Riffell, an associate professor of biology who has studied mosquito attraction. For instance, men with a greater diversity of skin microbes tended to get fewer mosquito bites than men with less diverse skin microbes did, a study found.
Tiny differences in the elements of these chemical smells can account for big differences in how many bites a person gets. The elements of those microbial colonies can also vary over time in the same individual, particularly if that person is sick, Riffell said. We don’t have much control over the microbiomes on our skin, but Riffell did offer some advice based on his research— mosquitoes love the color black, so consider wearing something lighter at your next cookout.
61. What do we know about mosquitoes before they bite?
A. They are affected by wind speed.
B. They tend to fly against the wind.
C. They locate their victims through their body sizes.
D. They target their victims by using carbon dioxide.
62. What is the key factor that mosquitoes rely on to choose who to bite?
A. Victims’ skin body temperature.
B. The water vapor they sensed in the air.
C. The chemicals left on skin by microbes.
D. The color of victims’ clothes.
63. Who is more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes?
A. Men in general.
B. Men with a greater variety of skin microbes.
C. Women in general.
D. Men with a smaller variety of skin microbes.
64. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Mosquitoes do not bite people who are sick.
B. Light-colored clothing is less likely to attract mosquitoes.
C. Mosquitoes do not bite people who are much older.
D. We should cover our bodies to avoid mosquitoes outdoors.
65. Which question does the passage mainly answer?
A. Why do some people attract mosquitoes?
B. Why are there mosquitoes in the world?
C. How to avoid mosquito bites?
D. What kind of smell attracts mosquitoes the most?
【答案】61. D 62. C 63. D 64. B 65. A

If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: more hugs, more time outside in nature, more belief in their own power to change the world. The third one leaves some people wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all of us — especially young people — need heroes. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity and a hero. A celebrity is all about fame — temporary, shallow fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move, etc. A hero, by contrast, is about character — qualities under the surface that aren’t seen until they take action.
Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.
Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy — which shoes, which cell phone — not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities — their own power to — make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person.
How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples of other young people who have made a difference. Barbara grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling centre for crude oil. Her project has grown to include 18 recycling centre in Texas.
The list could continue. This is only one example of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.
66. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B. To illustrate the details about being celebrities and heroes.
C. To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
D. To explain the meanings of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.
67. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Heroes only help specific groups of people.
B. Heroes want to be recognized for their work.
C. Heroes enjoy piloting boats to reach their destination.
D. Heroes play a vital role in keeping the world running.
68. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Young people don’t have the belief in their own strength.
B. Society doesn’t support the development of heroes.
C. The media turns ordinary celebrities into real heroes.
D. Heroes and celebrities are both valued today.
69. How can we make young people have faith in their power?
A. By explaining the qualities that make a young person a hero.
B. By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
C. By comparing the achievements made by different young people.
D. By providing examples of qualities making young people famous.
70. What does the passage focus on?
A. More and more heroes are in demand in the whole world.
B. It’s not proper for celebrities to be reported too much in the media.
C. Adults should become role models for young people to follow.
D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.

An Indiana man ordered a Sausage McMuffin at his local McDonald’s and got much more than he expected.
On January 6, Tik Tok user Josiah Vargas, shared a video detailing his trip to a McDonald’s drive-through in Elkhart, Indiana that resulted in him receiving much more than he ordered. In the video, which has attracted over 2.3 million views, Vargas is shocked by what he finds in his to-go bag instead of breakfast: thousands of dollars.
“Why? There’s a couple thousand dollars here,” Vargas says, holding up a baggie full of $20 bills. “Like, why would they do this? Why would they give this to me?”
Vargas took to Tik Tok to share his shocking discovery, knowing that he could easily take the money and leave the McDonald’s workers in quite a bind. But, ultimately, he says he knows what he needs to do.
“Now I have to return it because I’m a good person I guess,” Vargas says, putting the money back in the bag. “How interesting!”
After he walks into the store, he gives the bag to a worker at the register. The worker realizes he’s returning the cash they had been looking for. Amid all the relieved reactions from staff that can be heard from McDonald’s staff, one employee asks if they could give him a hug — which he accepts.
Back in the car, Vargas reflects on his good deed. “They were just all hugging me and thanking me,” he says. “When I was driving away, they called me back in. They gave me $200 as well as free McDonald’s for a month.”
The Tik Tok ends with Vargas sharing what he believes to be the moral of the story. “Do good, people. Returned 5,000, got 200 and free McDonald’ s for a month,” he says. “Good trade value and maybe a viral Tik Tok.”

【答案】参考范文:
Dear Chris,
How is everything? A meaningful activity themed “Presenting A Red Flower to You” is being held by the Student Union of our school. It is so impressive that I can’t wait to tell you some details and share my feelings with you.
In this activity, every participant is required to make a small red flower with their own hands and present it to a special person to express their heartfelt respect, gratitude or inspiration. When it comes to my choice of the receiver of the flower, I’d like to send it to my beloved mother. My mother has devoted all her time and energy to bringing me up since I was born. Not only does she take good care of me in everyday life, but also she comfort and encourage me when I encounter hardships. Under her guidance, I have grown from an innocent child into a responsible young man. Therefore, I am really grateful to her from the bottom of my heart.
As far as I am concerned, this activity is really beneficial because it provides such a good opportunity for us to express our sincere appreciation to people who love and care about us. Who will you send your flower to if you participate in such an activity?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Jin

A. They are affected by wind speed.
B. They tend to fly against the wind.
C. They locate their victims through their body sizes.
D. They target their victims by using carbon dioxide.
62. What is the key factor that mosquitoes rely on to choose who to bite?

D. The color of victims’ clothes.
63. Who is more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes?
A. Men in general.

The list could continue This is only one example of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.
66. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
