There are many national parks in the UK, and you may know Northumberland National Park, the North York Moors National Park and so on. But when you think of wildlife holidays in the UK, Scotland is probably the first destination that springs to mind, with quite a few breathtaking natural sites that offer a wonderful base to watch wildlife.
Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park
It is the first national park established in Scotland. The Loch Lomond at the center of the park is the largest body of fresh water in the UK. The largest land mammal (哺乳动物) in Britain, red deer can be found in the park. Keep an eye out as you pass through forests, woodlands and open hills.
The Isle of Staffa
The Isle of Staffa is famous for its dramatic rock formations, and for the cave known as “Fingal’s Cave”. Staffa provided inspiration for Felix Mendelssohn, a German musician. He visited in 1829 and, afterwards, composed his Hebrides Overture. The island is also famous for its adorable seabirds — puffins, which are known for their vibrant beaks (鸟喙).
The Cairngorms National Park
The Cairngorms National Park is in northeast Scotland. With an area of about 1,750 square miles, the park covers the Cairngorms range of mountains and surrounding hills, and is the largest national park in the UK and the second national park in Scotland. Over 25% of the UK’s endangered species make their home in the park’s ancient pine forests, among which you can find the red squirrel (松鼠) — the UK’s only native squirrel species.

Where does our learning journey end? Is it after high school or university? Maybe it’s once we get comfortable in our jobs. Perhaps it’s after retirement when we can kick back and enjoy golden years of peace.
Well, Tom Dercola, a 77-year-old retired high school teacher, shows that learning is a lifelong journey.
13 years after retirement, Dercola began taking courses offered through CMU’s English department. He felt his experience teaching the subject would make for a smooth transition (过渡) into the subject matter.
But what he found when he entered the classroom was more than he had expected. “I think back to my university days, when we learned Shakespeare, Chaucer, and what have you, and it didn’t mean a lot. It was writing the exam, reading the material, getting it out of the way,” says Dercola.
“Much of what the CMU professors were teaching was contemporary (当代的). It dealt with social problems, but it still fitted within the goals of that English course. It was very enjoyable.”
Although education has been his life’s work, Dercola doesn’t see university as being the only means by which learning is done. He says he saw too many other retirees fall into unhealthy laziness after retirement.
“When I retired from teaching, I had set some goals for myself. I wanted to work in a warehouse (货仓), so I went to Manitoba Harvest and volunteered there for about eight years. I loved animals and volunteered with the Humane Society for about seven years. I wanted to get my health back, so I started working on walking, weightlifting, and exercise, and I achieved that. And for some strange reason, I wanted to be a DJ.”
Dercola got on CJNU-FM in 2009 and has been producing a two-hour week program.
There is a saying that Dercola usually says, “If you let the grass grow under your feet, pretty soon it’s going to grow over your head.”
24.What can we learn about Dercola?
A.He is interested in ancient poetry. B.He used to teach English in high school.
C.He worked at CMU before retirement. D.He stopped learning after retirement.
25.What did Dercola find different about the courses he took at CMU?
A.They placed a high value on reading.
B.They required students to take special exams.
C.They were more than just focusing on the language.
D.They were mainly about great works of literature.
26.What does paragraph 7 mainly tell us?
A.Dercola lives a colorful life after retirement B.Dercola was interested in doing music as a child
C.Dercola has been in poor health since retirement. D.Dercola volunteered a lot to stay socially active.
27.What might Dercola say to his retired friends?
A.There is always time for success. B.We must use time purposefully, not lazily.
C.If you want time, you must make it. D.Time has a wonderful way of showing us what matters.

While hydroponic farms (growing plants in water), also known as “vertical (垂直的) farms”, exchange land use for electricity use, one project is trying to take the best of both worlds.
Using only natural heat for photosynthesis (光合作用) and heat, Shokcingly Fresh’s greenhouse in Offenham,England, can produce four-times the output compared with regular farming, while using much less energy than other vertical farms. This is because other vertical farms are closed systems, relying on man-made LED light and indoor heating to keep crops comfortable. “It is better for the environment. I can’t say it’s carbon-neutral but it isn’t as carbon-hungry as an LED vertical farm would be,” Nick Green, development director of Shocking Fresh, said.
While other producers might say that Shockingly Fresh’s use of natural light means they can’t keep up the 24-7 production typical of farms that can leave the lights on all night, the company stresses that they match the consumption patterns of humans and use far less energy in the process. “Production isn’t completely linear even though it would be in a fully-lit vertical farm, but people don’t eat less as much lettuce in winter as they do in summer,” he explained.
Offenham was completed in 2021, and is already producing lettuce and bok choy for sale at supermarkets, with strawberries planned for winter when the days become shorter. Even though Green thinks they can produce 2 million heads of lettuce per year, the location is just one-tenth of the size of future projects.
Offtenham covers 3 acres. The Longford Vertical Farm currently in the planning phase, will cover 32. Situated in between Glasgow and Edinburgh with good access to major roads, Longford will include rainwater catching systems to aid with cutting energy costs, and native landscaping around the former raining area.
Hydroponics is allowing cities to have access to fresh produce much nearer to their high-rises. For example, a 51-story “farmscraper” is covered in hydroponic farms that grow food for those who live within, in Shenzhen, China. They’re also appearing on rooftops, like in Montreal, which will provide 2% of all food consumed in the Canadian metropolis.
28.Why do plants of Shockingly Fresh have a higher output than other vertical farms?
A.They are exposed to a natural environment for growth.
B.They are saved from the harm of man-made light.
C.They are offered a better photosynthesis system.
D.They are provided with more heat and light.
29.What does the underlined word “linear” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Seasonal. B.Harmonious. C.Reasonable. D.Continuous.
30.What can we know about the longford Vertical Farm?
A.It is linked to highly advanced transportation systems.
B.Its production counts largely on its surroundings.
C.It has a grand plan for further development.
D.Its energy saving system is world-famous.
31.What’s the benefit of hydroponics to cities?
A.Helping to strengthen the rooftops.
B.Giving a greener city environment.
C.Creating beautiful natural scenery for cities.
D.Making fresh produce available more conveniently.

As Earth’s climate continues to change, a plant’s ability to adapt to its shifting environment is critical to its survival. Often, to stay alive a plant must move locations by releasing its seeds, but plants are rooted in the ground and cannot move themselves. Instead, they are dependent on animals or the wind to carry their seeds to a new location.
To better understand how plants can survive in the face of challenges like climate change, a team of researchers at the University of-Missouri (MU) and Michigan State University recently cooperated to develop an innovative mathematical model that can provide fast and reliable predictions of how far wind can carry a plant's seeds.
"Once seeds are released from a plant, we wanted to know how far they can go because as wind conditions vary the seeds will be moved around differently as a result of various weights, sizes and shapes," said Binbin Wang, an assistant professor at the MU College of Engineering. One advantage of the model is its ability to predict the probability of where seeds might eventually land on the ground when winds are wild. “This model gives us an insight into the probability of where a seed will land on the ground in different conditions depending on the seed type, the plant type and the wind speed,” adds Wang.
“Understanding how plants move as seeds year-round is critical for us to analyze how they’ll be able to handle climate change. Besides, this movement is also important for how we can increase diversity in the ecosystem.” Lauren Sullivan, a biologist and professor at Michigan State University, explained.
Instead of only making assumptions about how plants move, biologists are now able to partner with researchers who can factor in aspects like aerodynamics and micro-meteorology This innovative approach will help them develop accurate models that are simple enough to make good predictions in just a short amount of time in the future.
32.What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A.To attract readers’ interest. B.To bring up the topic of the text.
C.To introduce plants’ survival conditions. D.To tell the author's views about climate changes.
33.What is the mathematical model aimed for?
A.Monitoring plants’ growing process. B.Predicting how wind conditions change.
C.Solving the survival crisis of plants. D.Calculating how far wind can carry seeds.
34.What does Lauren Sullivan think of the movement?
A.It mainly depends on the wind speed. B.It contributes to the protection of ecosystem.
C.It plays a vital role in dealing with climate change. D.It helps researchers evaluate the wind condition.
35.What can we infer about the models in the future from the last paragraph?
A.They will be used in weather forecast. B.They will be applied to analyzing plant types.
C.They will be simplified and work more efficiently. D.They will speed up the plants' movement.
The 7 Words That Can Ruin a Relationship
The phrase “Don't worry; we will work it out" can be a double-edged sword in partnerships, whether it's a romantic relationship, a business cooperation,or a friendship. While it's often intended to reassure and provide hope in challenging times, its repeated use without meaningful action can lessen trust and weaken the partnership 36
False Reassurance
David has some impulsive(冲动的)spending habits. As a charming car sales professional, he enjoys himself during those times when he has strong sales numbers. 37 He just says to his supportive girlfriend, Bridget, “I don't want to talk about it”.
David wants to move in with Bridget in a new luxury apartment. Hetells Bridget,”Think how nice this place is. And, by the way, baby, my sales figures are hot lately!” Bridget then brings up concerns over monthly expenses, knowing that David has high credit-card debt. David responds with, “Don't worry; we will work it out”. However, because David fails to take steps to address his financial struggles, their problems continue and worsen. 38 And Bridget questions the sincerity behind his words, leading to doubt and frustration.
Communication breakdown
James and Tony, longtime friends bonded by their shared love for softball, excitedly took on the task of organizing their neighborhood’s annual league(联盟). However, as they focused in the planning process, their communication began to crack.
James, acareful planner, insisted on sticking to a strict schedule, while Tony, who has a more easy-going nature, repeatedly said, "Don't worry; we will work it out," selecting fun over structure. 39 For example, they argued about team formations and game schedules, causing tension to rise between them. Frustrated by their inability to see eye-to-eye, James and Tony found themselves at a crossroads, unsure if their friendship could stand the tension of their difference perspectives on how to run the league.
40 But it's also important for partners to back up their words to address challenges. Otherwise, the overuse of "Don't worry; we will work it out" can gradually lessen trust, communication, and responsibility, ultimately leading to the worsening of the partnership itself.
A.So his reassurances start to feel blank.
B.League participants felt caught in the conflict.
C.However, he gets quiet when his sales figures drop.
D.In conclusion, offering reassurance is helpful in any partnership.
E.Their conflicting viewpoints led to heated debates on everything.
F.The response ruins our bond with our family, partners and friends.
G.Following are two examples of how it lessens trust and harms relationships.

When NY state trooper (州警) Brian Hotchkiss received a missing child report from South Bristol, he prepared for the worst. As a trooper for six years and even longer in law enforcement, Hotchkiss knew that missing child cases could turn out badly.
The trooper was about to follow up on an assignment on March 27 when the report came in at the office in Farmington. The case became a priority, so Hotchkiss and another trooper drove as fast as possible to South Bristol, where the 2-year-old child was reported missing from her home in County Road 33.
It was 5:18 pm when the 911 center received the call about the child who had wandered from her home. The temperature was dropping and there was little daylight left, so the responders knew they had to act fast. Hotchkiss joined a growing search team of other troopers. It was a nice day then, but the temperature was dropping, which worried Hotchkiss the most.
The group first searched in and around the house, thinking that children sometimes hide there. They didn’t find her there, so they knocked on neighbors’ doors, asking if they had seen the little girl. Hotchkiss said they got an overwhelming (强烈的) response, with many people wanting to help. The neighbors reached out to others to join in locating the child.
The sun was beginning to set but they still hadn’t found the child. Although it seemed unlikely for a young child to walk up a steep (陡峭的) hill, Hotchkiss and two other troopers decided to go up the mountain. They each took different paths. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if I didn’t check everywhere I could. I kept climbing and climbing. After about 45 minutes into the climb, I looked up to the top of the mountain and all I could see were trees and dirt,” Hotchkiss said. But there, he spotted something that didn’t belong: a “pink dot (小圆点).”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt.

21.Which of the following is connected with the creation of a piece of music?
A.The North York Moors National Park.
B.Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
C.The Isle of Staffa.
D.The Cairngorms National Park.
22.What do we know about the Cairngorms National Park?
A.It is home to a wide variety of animals.
B.It lies off the coast of northeast Scotland.
C.It is the only place to find endangered species.
D.It is the second largest national park in Scotland.
23.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To give advice on how to spend holidays in Scotland.

【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.B
根据第二段“Well, Tom Dercola, a 77-year-old retired high school teacher, shows that learning is a lifelong journey.(77岁的退休高中教师Tom Dercola告诉我们,学习是一段终生的旅程)”可知,Dercola以前在高中教英语,故选B。
根据第五段“Much of what the CMU professors were teaching was contemporary (当代的). It dealt with social problems, but it still fitted within the goals of that English course. It was very enjoyable.(CMU教授教授的很多内容都是当代的。它处理的是社会问题,但它仍然符合英语课程的目标。非常愉快)”可知,CMU的课程不仅仅关注语言,还处理社会问题,故选C。
26.主旨大意题。根据第七段“‘When I retired from teaching, I had set some goals for myself. And for some strange reason, I wanted to be a DJ.’(‘当我从教师岗位上退休时,我给自己设定了一些目标。

【答案】28.A 29.D 30.C 31.D
根据第二段“Using only natural heat for photosynthesis (光合作用) and heat, Shokcingly Fresh’s greenhouse in Offenham, England, can produce four-times the output compared with regular farming(仅使用自然热进行光合作用和加热,位于英格兰奥芬汉姆的Shokcingly Fresh温室的产量是常规农业的四倍)”可知,“Shockingly Fresh”的植物比其他垂直农场有更高的产量是因为它们暴露在自然环境中生长。故选A项。
根据第三段“While other producers might say that Shockingly Fresh’s use of natural light means they can’t keep up the 24-7 production typical of farms that can leave the lights on all night( 虽然其他生产商可能会说,Shockingly Fresh使用自然光意味着他们无法保持农场7天24小时不间断的生产,因为农场可以整夜开着灯)”可知,下文是对上文的反驳,即使它将在一个完全照明的垂直农场,生产也不是不间断的。
根据第四段“Even though Green thinks they can produce 2 million heads of lettuce per year, the location is just one-tenth of the size of future projects.(尽管管格林认为他们每年可以生产200万棵生菜,但这个地方的面积只有未来项目的十分之一)”以及根据第五段“The Longford Vertical Farm currently in the planning phase, will cover 32. Situated in between Glasgow and Edinburgh with good access to major roads, Longford will include rainwater catching systems to aid with cutting energy costs, and native landscaping around the former raining area.(目前处于规划阶段的Longford垂直农场将占地32英亩。Longford位于格拉斯哥和爱丁堡之间,交通,将包括雨水收集系统,以帮助降低能源成本,并在以前的训练区域周围进行本地景观设计)”可知,Longford Vertical Farm有扩大规模的计划,即有远大的发展规划。故选C项。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Hydroponics is allowing cities to have access to fresh produce much nearer to their high-rises.(水培法使城市能够在离高楼更近的地方获得新鲜农产品)”可知,水培对城市的好处是让人们更方便地获得新鲜农产品。故选D项。

根据第一段的内容“As Earth's climate continues to change, a plant's ability to adapt to its shifting environment is critical to its survival. Often, to stay alive a plant must move locations by releasing its seeds, but plants are rooted in the ground and cannot move themselves. Instead, they are dependent on animals or the wind to carry their seeds to a new location.(随着地球气候的不断变化,植物适应环境变化的能力对其生存至关重要。通常情况下,为了生存,植物必须通过释放种子来移动位置,但植物扎根于土壤中,不能自己移动。相反,它们依靠动物或风把种子带到一个新的地方。)”和下文讲到的为了更好地了解植物如何在气候变化等挑战面前生存,研究人员开发了一个数学模型,可以快速可靠地预测风能把植物的种子带多远。可推断出,第一段主要是用来引出文章主题的。故选B项。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“To better understand how plants can survive in the face of challenges like climate change, a team of researchers at the University of-Missouri (MU) and Michigan State University recently cooperated to develop an innovative mathematical model that can provide fast and reliable predictions of how far wind can carry a plant’s seeds.(为了更好地了解植物如何在面对气候变化等挑战时生存,密苏里大学(MU)和密歇根州立大学的一组研究人员最近合作开发了一种创新的数学模型,可以快速可靠地预测风能带植物种子走多远。)”
根据第四段最后一句“Besides, this movement is also important for how we can increase diversity in the ecosystem.” Lauren Sullivan, a biologist and professor at Michigan State University, explained.(此外,这一运动对我们如何增加生态系统的多样性也很重要。”
根据最后一段最后一句“This innovative approach will help them develop accurate models that are simple enough to make good predictions in just a short amount of time in the future.(这种创新的方法将帮助他们开发准确的模型,这些模型足够简单,可以在未来很短的时间内做出准确的预测。)”
【答案】36.G 37.C 38.A 39.E 40.D
37.上文“As a charming car sales professional, he enjoys himself during those times when he has strong sales numbers.(作为一个有魅力的汽车销售专业人士,在他的销售数字强劲的时候他很开心)”描述了 David 在销售数字好的时候很健谈,结合下文“He just says to his supportive girlfriend, Bridget, ‘I don’t want to talk about it’.(他只是对支持他的女友Bridget说:‘我不想谈这件事。’)”
38.根据上文“However, because David fails to take steps to address his financial struggles, their problems continue and worsen.(然而,由于David没有采取措施解决他的财务困难,他们的问题继续恶化)”和下文“And Bridget questions the sincerity behind his words, leading to doubt and frustration.(Bridget质疑他话语背后的诚意,导致怀疑和沮丧)”可知,上文描述David未能采取行动解决财务问题,下文说明了Bridget对David保证的真实性产生怀疑,导致怀疑和挫败感,A项“所以他的安慰开始变得空洞”强调了重复使用“Don’t worry; we will work it out”而不采取实际行动会如何逐渐削弱信任。故选A。
39.下文“For example, they argued about team formations and game schedules, causing tension to rise between them. Frustrated by their inability to see eye-to-eye, James and Tony found themselves at a crossroads, unsure if their friendship could stand the tension of their difference perspectives on how to run the league.(例如,他们争论团队组成和比赛日程,导致他们之间的紧张关系上升。

Ever since he was a kid, Arjun loved reading stories. Stories where a detective saves the day using his wisdom. Stories where characters have superpowers, pull a sword, kill dragons, and 41 a faraway princess. Stories where anything was possible, 42 the real world.
For Arjun, reality was lifeless and boring. Stories, on the other hand, were the 43 of life without which everything was black and grey.
He began writing when he was 28. At first, writing didn’t come 44 to him. But his love for stories kept him 45 to his computer to endure all the upsetting disappointment, and slowly and gradually, his short stories began to get attention.
故填to create。
故填in。
故填which。
故填the。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hotchkiss quickly wrapped the freezing child in his uniform and informed the other searchers.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt. His heart pounded in his chest as he realized the pink dot he saw from afar might be the missing child. With renewed urgency, he fastened his pace up the steep hill, his eyes locked on the tiny spot of color. As he walked closer, he found it was her — the little girl they had been searching for.
Hotchkiss quickly wrapped the freezing child in his uniform and informed the other searchers. Relief washed over him as he felt her small body warmth against him. She was scared but unharmed, her eyes wide with confusion. He radioed down to the base, his voice filled with a mix of exhaustion and excitement, “I find her, and she’s safe.” The response was immediate, a wave of cheers echoing through the communication device. Back at the base, as doctors checked the child, Hotchkiss stood aside, watching. The day that had started with fear ended with a community’s collective sigh of relief and the reminder that hope can sometimes be found in the most unlikely of places — like a pink dot on a vast, cold mountain.
①跳动:pound/beat
②意识到:realize/recognize
③寻找:search for/look for/seek
④以……开始:start with/begin with/commence with
①害怕的:scared/frightened/fearful
②困惑:confusion/puzzlement
【点睛】[高分句型1] The response was immediate, a wave of cheers echoing through the communication device.
[高分句型2] The day that had started with fear ended with a community’s collective sigh of relief and the reminder that hope can sometimes be found in the most unlikely of places — like a pink dot on a vast, cold mountain.
