These days, streaming is more straightforward than ever. If you have a newer TV, all you have to do is select one of the built-in apps and sign up to start watching. You have more options with devices such as an Apple TV, Netflix or Hulu, and you don’t have to be a tech expert to operate them.
Netflix
The granddaddy of streaming built a dynasty on engaging shows with established fan bases, like Friends and Grey’ Anatomy. Then Netflix went all in on award-winning and fan-favorite originals such as House of Cards. Now it’s also the go-to for comedy specials with the likes of Jim Gaffigan and more, making it vital to stand-up fans.
Hulu
Once little more than Netflix’s replacement, Hulu is coming for top billing. Since Disney purchased the streamer in 2019, it has turned Hulu into a giant: a basic subscription includes original Hulu shows Only Murders in the Building. Go for Hulu’s Live TV and you’ll get 95-plus channels including the big networks, ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox.
Apple TV+
Apple’s is the only major service with original programming and no ads. That means no list of old shows to binge-watch, only the new cutting-edge series and films produced by Apple Studios that tend to cap best-of year-end roundups, including Ted Lasso.
Apps
Prices
Netflix
$6.99/month with ads
$15.49/month ad-free
Hulu
$7.99/month with ads
$17.99/month ad-free
$26.99/month for Live TV
Apple TV+
$9.99/month
1. What’s the total price for a quarter of ad-free Netflix and Hulu’s Live TV?

2. What is special about Apple TV+?

B. It is cheaper than the other two apps.
C. It is exclusively available on Apple devices.
D. It is a service with original ad-free programming.
3. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To promote some engaging TV shows. B. To compare features of some TV shows.
C. To list the charges of some streaming apps. D. To provide information on some streaming apps.

In 2013, two years into her doctoral studies on forensic (法医的) jewelry, Maria Maclennan found herself in a hospital in Namibia, helping identify the victims of a plane crash that had killed everyone on board. It was the first time she had put her theoretical skills into practice, examining pieces of jewelry found in the ruins and using her knowledge of designs, materials and the industry to provide investigators with leads.
“Being a forensic jeweler is not really a job that actually exists,” Dr. Maclennan, 35, said during a recent interview at her office in Edinburgh. “In some ways, it’s something I’ve made up and am still making up as I go. ” Since then she has helped identify the victims of many catastrophes, including building collapses, natural disasters and a terrorist attack. And while the situations can be miserable — sometimes, she said, the jewelry was all but fused (熔合) into human remains — she has approached the job as a professional: “You’re wearing your forensic gloves and it’s all very methodical and detached (不带感情的) from the person, the human being.”
But there is a part of the process that she finds emotionally difficult. “It’s at the end, the returning, when you give the belongings back to the family, which really strikes me,” she said. “You look at the piece as a sort of a representation of the individual. Especially, I think, in the absence of the human body.”
Dr. Maclennan now is a member of a disaster victim identification team for Blake Emergency Services, based in Cheshire, England. “Maria is the only one who does what she does,” said Carole Davenport, the archaeology manager at Blake. “She’s at the forefront of a field that she invented. She took the skills she learned as a jeweler and she applied this to the forensics world. Jewelry can be particular to areas, and there are certain unique things about jewelry that can help you almost read life of a person. That’s what Maria does.”
4. What did Maclennan apply her jewelry knowledge to?
A. Furthering her doctoral studies.
B. Designing custom-made jewelry.
C. Recognizing the identities of victims.
D. Reforming forensic jewelry industry.
5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What Maclennan does as a forensic jeweler.
B. When forensic jewelry came into existence.
C. Why Maclennan chose to be a forensic jeweler.
D. How forensic jewelers are viewed by the public.
6. How does Maclennan feel while returning victims’ belongings?
A. She is hardly affected as it is a routine for her.
B. She feels sorry for what she has done to the victims.
C. She is relieved that the process brings comfort to the families.
D. She feels sad as she has deep empathy for the victims’ families.
7. How does Davenport describe Maclennan in the last paragraph?
A. Firm and ambitious. B. Innovative and competent.
C. Intelligent and generous. D. Sensitive and responsible.

Angel Garcia Crespo is a computer engineer at Carlos III University of Madrid in Spain. His group has invented a new way for deaf-blind people to “watch” TV. The idea for the technology grew out of previous work by his group. The team had already worked on making audiovisual(视听的) materials accessible to people with either vision or hearing disabilities. But the group wanted to help people with both challenges. So they asked some deaf-blind people what would help.
In addition to relying on their sense of touch to communicate, deaf-blind people can also get and send information with a Braille line. The Braille system uses patterns of raised dots to stand for letters and numbers. A Braille line is an electronic machine with a changeable Braille display. Dots rise up or drop down based on the information sent to the machine.
Now the new system changes TV signals to data a Braille line can use. “The key to the system is the possibility of using subtitles(字幕) to collect TV information, ” Garcia Crespo explains. “Subtitles travel with the image(影像) and the audio in electromagnetic waves we don’t see. But an electronic system can keep those waves. ”
First, a computer program, or app, pulls out the subtitles and visual descriptions from the broadcast signal. The system then combines the information and changes both into data for Braille.
Now another app gets to work, which sends the data out to people’s Braille lines on demand. “This is done in real time, in less than a second, ” Garcia Crespo says. This lets a deaf-blind person “watch” TV as it’s broadcast. The system will work with various Braille lines, as long as there’s a bluetooth connection available. Now, the system is only used in Europe, and it should soon be available in the US.
8. What inspired Garcia Crespo’s group to work on the new technology?
A. Deaf-blind people’s poor life.
B. Their pity on the disabled people.
C. The challenges they face in work.
D. Their group’s previous research.
9. Why can the electronic system collect TV information?
A. It can combine all kinds of broadcast signals.
B. It can keep the waves with subtitles traveling.
C. It can work together with a variety of Braille lines.
D. It can pull out the subtitles and visual descriptions.
10. What does the author think of the future of the new technology?
A. Challenging. B. Bright.
C. Rewarding. D. Hopeless.
11. What should be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Technology Is Improving Deaf-blind People’s Life
B. A New Braille Line Is Applied to Disabled People’s Life
C. A Spanish Group Makes TV Accessible to Blind People
D. New Technology Helps Deaf-blind People “Watch” TV
D
“Four! ” My friend Kassie shouted from across the canal. I twisted in my ka yak seat to get a better look. Near the shore, one lo ne wheel stuck up over the water's surface. That's when I realized what Kassie was counting: drown shipping vehicles. We'd just begun a four-day kayaking trip along Scotland's Glasgow to Edinburgh Canoe Trail.
Scotland has five canals, and its first canal, the Forth and Clyde, was built in 1768. Then, in1822, a second canal, called the Union, was completed, connecting the Forth and Clyde to Edinburgh. Elsewhere in the country, three other canals were built during the same time period. With the railways coming, the canals were used less often and were closed altogether in 1963. Soon they became filled with rubbish. Fortunately, around the 1980s, there were canal enthusiasts who started to clear the rubbish. Since then, things have changed.
While changes are visible along much of the canal system, they're not obvious everywhere, which is why Kassie and I had no idea what to expect after the first day in Glasgow. Then we put in at Spiers Wharf near Glasgow. For the first few miles, the water quality was still bad. But the farther we paddled (用桨划船)outside of the city limits, the cleaner the water got. Soon, cherry trees stretched out over the water. As we floated through forests and under 100-year-old bridges, I realized an 18th-century industrial canal system that turned into rubbish-filled pools by the 1960s blossomed into a tourist destination.
Thanks to the Falkirk Wheel, the world's first rotating (旋转的)boat lift, completed in 2002, the canals were reconnected for the first time in almost 70 years. Seemingly overnight, boating clubs, crew team boathouses and waterfront cafés have all appeared alongside the canals. In 2013, The Kelpies - the world's largest horse statues - were fixed in Falkirk. I pulled Kassie out of bed at 6 a. m. to visit them; we ran to watch the sun's first rays bathe their steel noses in gold. In that moment, I realized how the canals have inspired such artworks.
12. What caused the decline of Scotland's canals?
A. The lack of financial support. B. The less dependence on waters.
C. The development of technology. D. The increasing amount of rubbish.
13. What does the underlined word “blossomed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Researched. B. Developed. C. Entered. D. Fell.
14. What happened after the Falkirk Wheel was constructed?
A. The local ecosystem improved. B. The transport became convenient.
C. Artworks sprang up on the canals. D. Businesses boomed along the canals.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The benefits of Scotland's canals. B. The features of Scotland's canals.
C. The changes of Scotland's canals. D. The conditions of Scotland's canals.

She flew to Boston on the east coast of the US. Later, she settled in a new neighborhood in East Boston. However, shortly afterwards, the company where she worked went bankrupt (破产). Suffering a series of bitter blows, she fell ill, a severe case of flu. She had to stay at home for the whole week, feeling extremely bad and hopeless.
Early one morning, Linda lay in bed, feeling painful all over. Then all of a sudden, there was an upsetting knock on her front door. Struggling out of the bed, she dragged herself to the window. There, outside, she saw a young lady carefully holding some leaflets(传单)and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today.” She muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.
Coughing bitterly, Linda stuck her head out. “Excuse me, madam…” the young lady said with a smile. “I’m sorry but I am not the slightest bit interested in any TV whatever.” Linda interrupted her impatiently. “As a matter of fact, I am feeling terribly awful.” “Is there anything I can do for you, madam?” the young lady asked with concern. “No thanks, just leave me alone.” Linda then shut the door in her face. The young lady politely turned and left in silence.

The labor course kicked off at 9 a. m. , greatly igniting students’ passion. Various labor activities were conducted and students participated enthusiastically, showcasing their tasks, from tilling the soil to planting seedlings and watering them with care.
In conclusion, last Friday’s labor practice session in our school garden was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated. It served as a testament to the value of experiential learning and the power of nature to inspire and educate.

【答案】One possible version:
A few hours later, another knock. Linda glanced out of the window. To her surprise, at the door was the same lady, back again. Really annoyed this time, Linda opened the door. Before Linda could utter any word, the young lady handed her a warm pot, with a concerned look on the face. “I’m so sorry to have disturbed you earlier. I thought you may need this homemade chicken soup. Hope it might make you feel a little better. ”
Linda was surprised by this lovely action. After being refused so rudely, the lady still showed much kindness to her. A sense of shame creeping upon her heart, she could only force a smile with burning ears. But also, a warm current surged through her brain and body. Linda took the chicken soup gratefully, tears blurring her eyes and a lump in her throat. The lady wrapped Linda in her arms and patted her on the back. “It’s OK, dear. Everything will be fine.” Hearing these words, Linda felt a ray of bright sunshine lighting up her life.
