In 2024, Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle made the world remember his name. At the Paris Olympics, he swam the 100-meter in 45.92 seconds, helping China win the gold medal in the men’s 4×100 meter medley relay (混合接力). This was a huge achievement and a moment of great pride for China.
Pan Zhanle was born in 2004 in Wenzhou, a city known for its strong SW swimming culture. When he was young, his parents sent him to swimming lessons just to keep him busy, but they soon discovered that he had a special talent. At the age of 7, he joined the Wenzhou Sports School. His coach, Wang Shi, remembers that Pan was small and quiet, but he trained very hard. For other kids, a punishment (惩罚) was to practice more. However, for Pan, not being allowed to swim was the worst punishment.
Pan believes that hard work and confidence are the keys to success. Even when he faced many difficulties, he stayed cool. He knew that his strong will and skills were the best way to prove himself. He was always looking for ways to improve and become even better.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Pan showed that Chinese and Asian swimmers can be as good as, of even better than, swimmers from Europe and America. His amazing performance helped China break the long-time dominance (统治) of the USA in the 4×100 meter medley relay.

The Beijing Opera is a traditional form of Chinese culture. In the Beijing Opera, each character has their face painted in a specific (特定的) way. By looking at face-painting, the audience (观众) can know who the good guy is and who the bad guy is.
Where did this kind of face-painting come from? An old story told us that it had something to do with Warrior Lanling. Warrior Lanling was one of the four most handsome men in ancient China. Some soldiers in his army thought that he was weak because of his good-looking face. Therefore, to make himself look more powerful, he wore a mask with an ugly (丑的) face painted on it.
Another story about face-painting was related to Li Longji, an emperor in the Tang Dynasty. He loved opera very much. One day, a clown actor (丑角) fell ill right before a performance. The emperor decided to play this role himself. He covered his face with a piece of white square jade (玉) so that others wouldn’t be able to recognize (认出) him. Since then, clown actors have continued to paint white squares on their faces.
As time went on, face-painting was used to show the personalities (个性) of different roles. It has become one of the special art forms of the Beijing Opera.

Do you like walking in the forest or climbing the hill? Studies (研究) show that staying in a green place will make people feel comfortable and happy. But how about blue places? They include beaches, rivers, lakes and some other areas with water.
“There are a lot of studies on how green places help with people’s health and feelings, but not many on blue places,” Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, a scientist says.
Are blue places good for people’s health and feelings too? To learn about it Mark and his team make a study. It takes three weeks. In the first week, 59 people spend 20 minutes each day walking along a beach in Barcelona, Spain. Then, during a different week, they spend 20 minutes walking along city streets. In the third week, they spend 20 minutes walking indoors. After each activity, the team uses some ways to assess (评估) people’s feelings and health. Then they find that walking in blue places really helps a lot.
About 55% of people around the world now live in cities and there will be more in the future. It is important for people to build more blue and green places in our daily life.
46. Blue places mainly (主要地) mean places with _______ according to Paragraph 1.
A. plants B. animals C. grass D. water

D. How long people should stay in blue places each day.
49. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce how green and blue places help with people’s health problems.
B. To tell the differences between the blue places and green places.
C. To show the importance of building more blue and green places in people’s lives.
D. To call on more people to do research on blue places in the future.

Think back to a time in your life when you tried something new.
When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.
I saw so many kinds of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 miles, I was thinking, “I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I am never doing this again!”
That first 10 km race was quite an experience. I jogged, I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish. Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed (尴尬的) that I was more than 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare ourselves to others when we really shouldn’t? I decided that I would not give up on running races, and that one day I would be one of those 70-year-olds who were still running.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was so proud of myself. I didn’t regret (后悔) having such an experience.
50. Why did the writer join in the running race?
A. Because he was crazy about running for the race.
B. Because he just wanted to try something new.
C. Because he thought he had rich running experience.
D. Because he expected to see if he was strong enough.
51. How did the writer’s feeling change during the race?
①He decided to keep on running. ②He felt very proud of himself.
③He was kind of embarrassed. ④He regretted joining in the race.
A. ①→②→③→④ B. ②→③→④→① C. ③→①→④→② D. ④→③→①→②
52. What did the writer try to tell us?
A. We should volunteer as teenagers. B. We should cheer up for old people.
C. We should run our own race in life. D. We should try our best to be No. 1.

Since it was on in July this year, the animated (动画的) film Chang’an has caught many people’s interest. The story in the film happens in the Tang Dynasty (朝代), a golden age of Chinese history and culture, and tells about Li Bai and his close friend Gao Shi. Both of them were among the most famous poets at that time. Some other poets also appear in the film, such as Du Fu, Wang Wei and Meng Haoran. They work hard to make themselves and the country better.
There are 48 well-known Tang poems in the almost three-hour-long film. For example, one of them is Li Bai’s poem Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn. Li Bai wrote the poem to show his happiness returning home from exile (流放). Many children recited (朗诵) poetry along with the poets when watching the film. They felt excited because those familiar (熟悉的) names became real people.
The film is meaningful, too. It tells the stories of these great people in a special way, so that we can have a deeper understanding (理解) of our history and famous works.
53. In which dynasty does the story in the film happen?

54. How did Li Bai feel when he wrote Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn?

A. hope B. secret C. change D. information
【答案】B
【解析】
【详解】句意:——威廉姆斯夫人,你成为一名优秀网球运动员的秘诀是什么?——没什么特别的。我只是每天努力训练。

A promise B. promised C. will promise D. are promising

考查时态。promise承诺,一般现在时;promised承诺,一般过去时;will promise将承诺,一般将来时;are promising正在承诺,现在进行时。根据“why don’t you take me for a walk?”可知,“承诺”这个动作发生在过去,故本题的时态为一般过去时,谓语动词应用过去式promised。故选B。

【答案】例文
Hi Jackson,
I’m glad to hear from you. Actually, all of us are like this. When I started running, I was also very tired. I also wanted to give up, but my dad encouraged me to persevere in time. I suggest you also start with running first. You can take your time, such as running 500 meters on the first day, 600 meters on the second day, and 700 meters on the third day. I believe that as long as you persist, you will definitely be good at sports.
I hope my suggestions are helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
