Since the age of five, Ben had dreamed of becoming a musician. However, his ambition nearly ended one day in 2015. Ben, then an 18-year-old high school senior, was involved in a serious accident that put him in the hospital for 45 days and left him paralyzed from the neck down. For most people, that would have crushed any hope of a musical career. For Ben, it was just the beginning. Far from being a deterrent, his condition inspired him. "I wanted to prove to my friends and family—and to myself—that I was still capable, whatever capable meant," he told Youth Music. Capable for him meant making music, so Ben did it from his hospital bed with the help of some specialized equipment.
Ben moved to New York in 2017 and formed a band of musicians with disabilities. He calls it the Melody Makers. "I want to break down the stereotype of disabled people and show that music is music, whether you're playing standing up or sitting down," he told a local news channel.
The Melody Makers found that making music while being disabled can be just as thrilling, creative, and meaningful as regular music-making. In the disabled music festivals all over the country, the five-member band plays the music of Coldplay and Maroon 5. They strum their guitars with the help of adaptive devices, sing with passion, and create a beautiful harmony that touches the hearts of everyone who listens. The audience's standing ovations show that their music is making a difference.
Every year he holds a music camp for disabled people of all ages and abilities. In 2020, 150 participants from eight countries attended. For many, it was the first time they felt truly included. Lisa Adams told Youth Music that working with Ben inspired her to pursue her own musical dreams. "My disability doesn't define me, so why should I let it stop me from doing what I love?" she said.
24. What does the underlined word "crushed" mean in paragraph 1?
A. Strengthened. B. Destroyed. C. Encouraged. D. Ignored.
25. What does the Melody Makers aim to do?
A. Train disabled but professional musicians.
B. Promote the popularity of music made by disabled people.
C. Hold music competitions for disabled musicians.
D. Change people's prejudice against the disabled.
26. What can be inferred from the Melody Makers' performance in paragraph 3?
A. It is unimpressive.
B. It is discordant.
C. It is emotionally powerful.
D. It is commercially successful.
27. Why does the author mention Lisa Adams in the last paragraph?
A. To show she never gives up on her musical dreams.
B. To indicate Lisa Adams and Ben cooperate well.
C. To emphasize the importance of being included.
D. To highlight Ben has a positive influence on others.
B 25. D 26. C 27. D
25. 根据第二段中 Ben 的话 “I want to break down the stereotype of disabled people and show that music is music...”

A new study provides evidence that Mars contains a large ocean deep beneath its surface. The finding is based on data collected by the InSight Lander, a robotic explorer operated by the American space agency NASA.InSight, which landed in 2018, was designed to capture data from within the planet’s interior. The lander ended its operations on Mars in late 2022.
For the current study, researchers used seismic (地震的) data collected by InSight. The team examined the data to study Martian quake activity. InSight had recorded more than 1,300 marsquakes.
The device InSight used to measure ground movements is called a seismometer(地震仪). It is extremely sensitive to the Martian environment. The seismic data suggests liquid water exists deep beneath the ground where InSight operated from.
Since water is considered necessary to support life, scientists say the presence of it on Mars leaves open the possibility that some form of life might exist, or existed there in the past.
Numerous studies done before have also provided evidence that liquid water could exist on Mars. Scientists have already uncovered evidence that about 3 billion years ago, the surface of Mars likely had an active system of lakes, rivers and oceans.
Scientists believe that Mars has lost its surface water as its atmosphere became less thick. This likely turned the planet into the dry, dusty world it is today. They have theorized that much of the ancient water escaped out into space or remained buried under the surface.
The data suggests liquid water sits between 11 and 20 kilometers down in the Martian crust. The water is likely contained in a deep layer of igneous rock beneath the Martian surface. Scientists said that the water likely moved down from the surface billions of years ago, when water is believed to have flowed freely on Mars.
There is currently no way to confirm the study’s suggested existence of liquid water because it sits so far beneath the Martian surface. Such a confirmation would require large drills and other specialized equipment.
28.How did the researchers get the finding?
A.By analyzing the previous research.
B.By conducting an experiment on Mars.
C.By referring to the data from a robotic explorer.
D.By comparing the Martian surface with that of Earth.
29.Why did water disappear from the surface of Mars according to the scientists?
A.Its structure changed. B.Its atmosphere thinned.
C.Its temperature rose. D.Its surface broke into pieces.
30.What’s the author’s attitude towards the new discovery?
A.Objective. B.Tolerant. C.Unclear. D.Uncaring.
31.What’s the text mainly about?
A.There are frequent quakes on Mars just like on Earth.
B.Scientists have been searching for signs of life on Mars.
C.New study suggests Mars has a large underground ocean.
D.An advanced device for exploring Mars has ended its mission.
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.A 31.C

根据第六段中“Scientists believe that Mars has lost its surface water as its atmosphere became less thick. This likely turned the planet into the dry, dusty world it is today.(科学家们认为,火星失去了地表水,因为它的大气层变得不那么厚了)”可知,依据科研人员的说法,火星的地表水消失是因为它的大气层变薄造成的。故选B项。
根据最后一段“There is currently no way to confirm the study’s suggested existence of liquid water because it sits so far beneath the Martian surface. Such a confirmation would require large drills and other specialized equipment.(目前还没有办法证实该研究提出的液态水的存在,因为它位于火星表面以下很远的地方。这样的确认将需要大型钻机和其他专业设备)”可知,作者对此科学发现的态度是客观的。故选A项。

Guilt, if left unchecked, can produce problems ranging from the physical to the mental. However, despite its reputation, guilt — once properly controlled and used — can be more positive than negative.
“We’ve only recently come to understand that guilt can be constructive,” says Will Bynum, a professor at the Duke University. “We now have a new concept of guilt as a potential source for growth. It can point us toward actions we can take to improve our lives.”
Guilt is “a self-conscious emotion characterized by a painful judgment of having done or thought something that is wrong.” It’s a feeling of could’ve, should’ve, would’ve that’s often termed a “self-aware” emotion. It’s an unpleasant emotion in our guts (直觉), a voice whispering warnings in our heads — it’s the reminder that we have a guilty feeling.
In a 2021 study, researchers interviewed Canadian adults and then showed them videos related to their interview responses and designed to cause guilt. For example, a participant would see a sentence “You donate less than the average Canadian”, before they watched a video about starving children in need of donations.
Researchers found that guilt affected the autonomic nervous system, raising electrical activity in the skin, upsetting gastric rhythms in the stomach and lowering swallowing rates.
Guilt affects us for good or for ill depending on how we experience and manage it. The trick to replacing regret with relief is to learn how to distinguish between the healthy guilt that can help you and the unhealthy kind. Healthy guilt is realistic and justified, a self-correction that promotes personal development, whereas unhealthy guilt is twisted and worsens, eating into our self-respect and preventing us from growing as much as we should.
“Thinking ahead about guilt works even better than later acknowledging it,” Baumeister says. “If you get a hint that you’re about to do wrong to someone and will feel guilty about it afterwards, just stop yourself. The sooner you see the guilt coming, the better prepared you’ll be to prevent it.”
32.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The definition of guilt. B.The impact of guilt.
C.The cause of guilt. D.The feature of guilt.
33.Why are the participants shown the underlined sentence?
A.To make them donate more money. B.To get them to feel guilty.
C.To enhance their sense of responsibility. D.To help them understand the children.
34.What does the author want to highlight in paragraph 6?
A.How to manage ill guilt. B.How promote personal development.
C.How to play tricks on guilt. D.How to make guilt affect us for good.
35.Which of the following can best interpret Baumeister’s words?
A.Experience teaches. B.Prevention is better than cure.
C.Take things as they come. D.In time of peace prepare for war.
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.D 35.B

It’s an unpleasant emotion in our guts (直觉), a voice whispering warnings in our heads — it’s the reminder that we have a guilty feeling.(内疚是“一种自觉的情绪,其特征是对自己做错或想错的事情做出痛苦的判断。” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“In a 2021 study, researchers interviewed Canadian adults and then showed them videos related to their interview responses and designed to cause guilt. 39.分析句子可知,本空填半句,答案锁定在A 项和G 项之间;前后句之间为让步关系,结合上半句“Even though Citywalk is a niche and new phenomenon(尽管Citywalk是一个小众的新现象)”句意可知,此处是说,尽管城市漫步是一个小众的市场和新现象,但“业内人士表示,它的潜力是巨大的”。故选A项。
40.根据空前一句“Citywalk is offering a positive change to urban travelers.( Citywalk为城市旅行者提供了积极的改变。)” It allows them to better choose the experiences that agree with their interests and needs. When NY state trooper (州警) Brian Hotchkiss received a missing child report from South Bristol, he prepared for the worst. As a trooper for six years and even longer in law enforcement, Hotchkiss knew that missing child cases could turn out badly.
The trooper was about to follow up on an assignment on March 27 when the report came in at the office in Farmington. The case became a priority, so Hotchkiss and another trooper drove as fast as possible to South Bristol, where the 2-year-old child was reported missing from her home in County Road 33.
It was 5:18 pm when the 911 center received the call about the child who had wandered from her home. The temperature was dropping and there was little daylight left, so the responders knew they had to act fast. Hotchkiss joined a growing search team of other troopers. It was a nice day then, but the temperature was dropping, which worried Hotchkiss the most.
The group first searched in and around the house, thinking that children sometimes hide there. They didn’t find her there, so they knocked on neighbors’ doors, asking if they had seen the little girl. Hotchkiss said they got an overwhelming (强烈的) response, with many people wanting to help. The neighbors reached out to others to join in locating the child.
The sun was beginning to set but they still hadn’t found the child. Although it seemed unlikely for a young child to walk up a steep (陡峭的) hill, Hotchkiss and two other troopers decided to go up the mountain. They each took different paths. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if I didn’t check everywhere I could. I kept climbing and climbing. After about 45 minutes into the climb, I looked up to the top of the mountain and all I could see were trees and dirt,” Hotchkiss said. But there, he spotted something that didn’t belong: a “pink dot (小圆点).”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hotchkiss quickly wrapped the freezing child in his uniform and informed the other searchers.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt. His heart pounded in his chest as he realized the pink dot he saw from afar might be the missing child. With renewed urgency, he fastened his pace up the steep hill, his eyes locked on the tiny spot of color. As he walked closer, he found it was her — the little girl they had been searching for.
Hotchkiss quickly wrapped the freezing child in his uniform and informed the other searchers. Relief washed over him as he felt her small body warmth against him. She was scared but unharmed, her eyes wide with confusion. He radioed down to the base, his voice filled with a mix of exhaustion and excitement, “I find her, and she’s safe.” The response was immediate, a wave of cheers echoing through the communication device. Back at the base, as doctors checked the child, Hotchkiss stood aside, watching. The day that had started with fear ended with a community’s collective sigh of relief and the reminder that hope can sometimes be found in the most unlikely of places — like a pink dot on a vast, cold mountain.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Hotchkiss had been told that the girl was wearing a pink skirt.
