第二节 续写
One possible version:
Finally, that October, I spotted the apartment of my dreams in a new home in a nice neighborhood. The place had a stainless-steel refrigerator and a microwave oven. It also had central air-conditioning. What’s more, the new place was close to the train and the express bus. Thus, although the apartment was a little expensive, I decided to move in. It took me a few weeks to get the place fully in order, but I remember how proud and happy I was to show my new house to my friend, Jon, one Saturday night when he came over for dinner.
As time went on, I found myself doing more things out of my comfort zone and feeling more positive about life. I started to address being overweight. I ran regularly, which helped me lose eighty pounds. I also started to get out of my comfort zone professionally. As change upon change built up in my life, I felt like I was a different person. My life had improved in so many ways, and it all started when I moved out of my old apartment, took a risk and found a new place to spread my wings.

Late last year, I needed to transport some furniture from our house to my son’s flat in central London. I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.
Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately, I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously.
At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just finished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You’ve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It displayed a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the damaged car’s windscreen, giving my phone number.
I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,” I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he’d witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked.
He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.
24. The man felt ______ to have delivered the furniture himself.
A. grateful B. regretful C. proud D. confident
25. The man trembled violently because ______.
A. he caused a terrible traffic accident B. he was afraid to see the three people
C. driving the lorry was too difficult for him D. the furniture was too heavy for him
26. The man said he was a bad man most probably because ______.
A. he made the traffic accident on purpose B. he shouldn’t have caused trouble for the disabled
C. he shouldn’t have driven the lorry himself D. he parked the big lorry on the pavement
27. The writer intended to suggest that ______.
A. it was exciting to drive a lorry B. it was hard to avoid accidents
C. the boss was expert in driving D. being too confident is foolish
C
“Belittle” was first used by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
Many years ago, Buffon, a French naturalist, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics(批评家) did not like them. Some critics said, “Buffon is more of a poet than a scientist.”
Thomas Jefferson did not like what Buffon had said about the natural wonders of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that Buffon had spoken of natural wonders in America as if they were unimportant.
This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was a naturalist, as well as a farmer, inventor, historian, writer and politician. He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.
In 1788, Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state, Virginia. While writing, he thought of its natural beauty and then of the words of Buffon. At that moment, Jefferson created a new word-belittle. He said. “Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic.”
Noah Webster, the American word expert, liked this word. He put it in his English language dictionary in 1806, “Belittle-to make somebody or something small, unimportant.”
Americans had already accepted Jefferson’s word and started to use it. In 1797, the Independent Chronicle newspaper used the word to describe a politician the paper supported. “He is an honorable man,” the paper wrote, “so let the opposition try to belittle him as much as they please.”
In 1872, a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word. He said, “‘Belittle’ has no chance of becoming English. And as more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it, the sooner it is forgotten, the better.” This expert failed to kill the word. Today, “belittle” is used where the English language is spoken.
28. What was the reason for Jefferson’s creating the new word?
A. He disagreed with Buffon’s views on natural wonders in America.
B. Lots of critics thought Buffon wasn't a real naturalist.
C. Lots of critics disliked Buffon’s books.
D. He was a naturalist and writer.
29. What do we know about Buffon according to the text?
A. Some of his poems were known to Jefferson.
B. He made some wrong comments on Jefferson.
C. Some of his books were welcome by readers.
D. He made great contributions to the creation of “belittle”.
30. What do we know about “belittle” from the last paragraph?
A. An American word expert decided to use it in English.
B. A word export used it to describe a politician.
C. The critical writers once figured that it should be killed.
D. It became popular soon after it was created.
31. What may be the best title for the text?
A. The comment on the New World B. The creation of Thomas Jefferson
C. The argument about the new word D. The history of the word “belittle”
D
A Midsummer Night’s Dream may be one of Shakespeare’s most performed play—but its latest version from the Royal Shakespeare Company will be unlike any seen before. Titled Dream, the 50-minute online production combines live performance with motion-capture (动作捕捉) technology, 3D graphics, and interactive gaming techniques that let audiences remotely guide the leading character Puck through a virtual forest.
As live theater put some seriously high-tech fairy (小精灵) factors into practice, Dream promises to bring the rarest version of the play to our screens. In 2016, the theater’s production of The Tempest used live motion-capture technology to create a 3D digital image that was projected above the stage. The difference this time is that everything in the play—the performers and their surroundings—will be shown virtually.
Seven actors will perform in a specially-built studio in Portsmouth, southern England, wearing motion-capture suits. They will be surrounded by a 360-degree camera set, made up of 47 cameras with every movement almost immediately presented digitally, which is presented to viewers online. With its much-reduced characters, Dream is not a complete production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; rather, it is a story inspired by it, focusing on Puck and the fairies.
Up to 2,000 audience members for each performance can become part of the show and will be invited to guide Puck through the forest. Onscreen, the chosen audience will appear as a cloud of tiny fireflies (萤火虫). By using their mouse or finger on the screen of a smart device, they will be able to move their firefly across the screen, and Puck will be at their beck and call to go through the virtual space. For viewers watching at home, the virtual fairies moving through a digital forest will look more like a video game than the average Royal Shakespeare Company show. But the performances are delivered live and in real time. Every night’s performance will be unique.
“Without the fireflies—the audiences—Puck wouldn’t be going anywhere,” said E.M. Williams who plays the role. “The audiences are very much the fuel and the energy of the show.”
32. What makes Dream different from The Tempest?
A. The way it presents everything in the play. B. The surroundings around the performers.
C. The 3D digital image it chooses to show. D. The number of actors and actresses.
33. Which aspect of the play does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. Its leading characters. B. The design of its content.
C. The inspiration for the play. D. Its production process.
34. What does the underlined part “be at their beck and call” in the last but one paragraph mean?
A. Be ready to follow their order. B. Be likely to receive a call.
C. Be difficult to control. D. Be willing to guide them.
35. What do E.M. Williams’ words in the last paragraph show?
A. The cost of the show. B. The pleasure of the audiences.
C. The task of the leading character. D. The importance of the audiences.

Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount? 36
The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. 37 Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money.
First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time. 38
In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing that. 39
Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money. They can spend it by giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. 40 Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. Saving can also open the door to future saving and investing for children.
A. They can save it for future use.
B. Timing is another consideration.
C. As helping at home is a normal part of family life.
D. Some children are not good at managing their pocket money.
E. Learning how to get money is very important for every child.
F. One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money.
G. By doing so, these children will learn that spending must be done with a budget.

“I’m sorry, Lisa, but Debbie and I are going to move back into the house. You’re going to have to find another place to live.”
I couldn’t believe what Neil, my landlord (房东), was telling me on that warm April night. I had tears in my eyes, and so did he. I had lived in his Staten Island house for more than twelve years.
Neil had never raised my rent, which was $750 a month, very cheap for New York City. This was a big comfort when I was laid off from my newspaper job and couldn’t find any work for two years. He promised me that I would always have a home, even if I had a hard time paying the rent. But now, I was going to have to find a new apartment and pay more.
Although he gave me six months to find a new place, I was still astonished and worried. So I called Jon, my best friend, to complain about my bad experience. But Jon surprised and annoyed me.
“Look on the bright side.” he said. “Maybe you will find a place you like better. Do you remember you complained all the time about the crowded bus to and from the house? Why don’t you find a place where you don’t have to take that bus?”
“How can you say that?” I shouted at him. “This is way out of my comfort zone!”
“Come on, Lisa. Did it ever occur to you that change could be good?” Jon said.
“No!” I screamed and hung up on him.
I felt upset for the next few days about our argument. But what if Jon was right? Why did I assume that every change would be bad? Maybe my life needed to be changed.
That summer, as I started looking for apartments, I began to think about new possibilities. Maybe I could find an apartment with better furniture.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, that October, I spotted the apartment of my dreams in a new home in a nice neighborhood.
As time went on, I found myself doing more things out of my comfort zone and feeling more positive about life.

Thanksgiving is basically a harvest-related festival which celebrates communal harmony.
Though this festival is said to have originated in America, a number of other countries also celebrate
harvest-related festivals. The festival is observed with different names and in different seasons. In
Australia we can see a number of harvest festivals.
Apple Festival & Grape Festival
The harvest for apples and grapes takes place in the month of March in Australia in the granite
belt, a special area. The festival is celebrated for 3-4 days. During the festival, various cultural and
fun events are organized. Activities like grape crushing competitions, apple picking competitions,
street carnivals (狂欢), and grand parades are also part of the festival.
Renmark Orange Week Festival
In August or September, the large orange growing area along the Murray River in South
Australia holds a festival in Renmark, which is called the Renmark Orange Week. All kinds of
games, competitions and fun last for a week during the carnival. Fireworks are another feature of
the festival. The two varieties that are being harvested in Australia are the Valencia, which is from
October to May and the Navel, which is from May to October.

Late last year, I needed to transport some furniture from our house to my son’s flat in central London.
I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and
drive it myself.
Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage.
Fortunately, I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves
broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously.
At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only
to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just
finished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You’ve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car.
There were white scratches on its front face. It displayed a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a
bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the damaged car’s windscreen,
giving my phone number.
I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back
to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just
charge me,” I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he’d witnessed
others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he
asked.
He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so
grateful.
The
books were a great success even though some critics(批评家) did not like them. Some critics
said, “Buffon is more of a poet than a scientist.”
Thomas Jefferson did not like what Buffon had said about the natural wonders of the New
World. It seemed to Jefferson that Buffon had spoken of natural wonders in America as if they were
unimportant.
This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was a naturalist, as well as a farmer, inventor, historian,
writer and politician. He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more
important than those of the New World.
In 1788, Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state, Virginia. While writing, he thought of
its natural beauty and then of the words of Buffon. At that moment, Jefferson created a new word-
belittle. He said. “Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic.”
Noah Webster, the American word expert, liked this word. He put it in his English language
dictionary in 1806, “Belittle-to make somebody or something small, unimportant.”
Americans had already accepted Jefferson’s word and started to use it. In 1797, the Independent
Chronicle newspaper used the word to describe a politician the paper supported. “He is an
honorable man,” the paper wrote, “so let the opposition try to belittle him as much as they please.”
In 1872, a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word. He
said, “‘Belittle’ has no chance of becoming English. And as more critical writers of America, like
those of Britain, feel no need of it, the sooner it is forgotten, the better.” This expert failed to kill
the word.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream may be one of Shakespeare’s most performed play—but its latest version
from the Royal Shakespeare Company will be unlike any seen before. Titled Dream, the 50-minute online
production combines live performance with motion-capture (动作捕捉) technology, 3D graphics, and
interactive gaming techniques that let audiences remotely guide the leading character Puck through a virtual
forest.
As live theater put some seriously high-tech fairy (小精灵) factors into practice, Dream promises to
bring the rarest version of the play to our screens. In 2016, the theater’s production of The Tempest used live
motion-capture technology to create a 3D digital image that was projected above the stage. The difference
this time is that everything in the play—the performers and their surroundings—will be shown virtually.
Seven actors will perform in a specially-built studio in Portsmouth, southern England, wearing
motion-capture suits. They will be surrounded by a 360-degree camera set, made up of 47 cameras with
every movement almost immediately presented digitally, which is presented to viewers online. With its
much-reduced characters, Dream is not a complete production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; rather, it is
a story inspired by it, focusing on Puck and the fairies.
Up to 2,000 audience members for each performance can become part of the show and will be invited
to guide Puck through the forest. Onscreen, the chosen audience will appear as a cloud of tiny fireflies (萤
火虫). By using their mouse or finger on the screen of a smart device, they will be able to move their firefly
across the screen, and Puck will be at their beck and call to go through the virtual space. For viewers
watching at home, the virtual fairies moving through a digital forest will look more like a video game than
the average Royal Shakespeare Company show. But the performances are delivered live and in real time.
Every night’s performance will be unique.
“Without the fireflies—the audiences—Puck wouldn’t be going anywhere,” said E.M. Williams who
plays the role.

Why do their parents
just give them a certain amount? 36
The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to
family. 37 Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money.
First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then
parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first,
some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually
advised not to offer more money until it is the right time. 38
In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money
if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing
that. 39
Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the
money. They can spend it by giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they
want. 40 Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. Saving can
also open the door to future saving and investing for children.

You’re going to have
to find another place to live.”
I couldn’t believe what Neil, my landlord (房东), was telling me on that warm April night. I
had tears in my eyes, and so did he. I had lived in his Staten Island house for more than twelve
years.
Neil had never raised my rent, which was $750 a month, very cheap for New York City. This
was a big comfort when I was laid off from my newspaper job and couldn’t find any work for two
years. He promised me that I would always have a home, even if I had a hard time paying the rent.
But now, I was going to have to find a new apartment and pay more.
Although he gave me six months to find a new place, I was still astonished and worried. So I
called Jon, my best friend, to complain about my bad experience. But Jon surprised and annoyed
me.
“Look on the bright side.” he said. “Maybe you will find a place you like better. Do you
remember you complained all the time about the crowded bus to and from the house? Why don’t
you find a place where you don’t have to take that bus?”
Why did I
assume that every change would be bad? Maybe my life needed to be changed.
That summer, as I started looking for apartments, I began to think about new possibilities.
Maybe I could find an apartment with better furniture.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, that October, I spotted the apartment of my dreams in a new home in a nice
neighborhood.
As time went on, I found myself doing more things out of my comfort zone and feeling more
positive about life.
