The Athlete I Respect Most
As an passionate sports fan, the athlete I deeply respect is Fan Zhendong, a remarkable Chinese table tennis player.
Born in Guangdong, China,Fang has shown an unwavering commitment to table tennis since the young age and achieved extraordinary achievements in it.
What I admire most about Fan is his sportsmanship and resilience. Despite facing immense pressure and setbacks, he never gives up and always struggles to excel. His achievements inspire me to pursue my goals with determintion and to face challenges with grace.
Possible version 1:
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face. “Actually”, he said, “my mom doesn't live with my dad and me right now.” So surprised were Ollie and I that we stood there, speechless. James explained that his mum had to be in prison for a while and he hardly ever got to see her. “I miss her so much”, he added in a choked voice. Hearing that, Ollie and I immediately understood his tough situation. “How about inviting your dad this Sunday morning?” Ollie suggested, eager to cheer him up. Though hesitant, James called his father with Ollie's cellphone. Luckily, his father agreed to come, which made James and me jump with joy.
On Sunday morning, James and his dad came to join us. In the backyard of our house, we three families cooked waffles, French toast and hot cocoa together. It was a lot of work; however, it was worth the effort when we shared the food together, especially when we saw smiles on James's face. The food turned out great and everyone had a wonderful time. James planned to send his mum photos from our brunch, firmly believing his mom would love them. On that special Mother's Day, it dawned on me that it's important to be as kind as possible to others because you never really know what other people are going through.
Possible version 2:
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face. “My mum... she passed away during an accident last year.” So shocked were Ollie and I that we stood there, unable to utter a word. “I miss her so much”, he added in a choked voice. Hearing that, Ollie and I immediately understood his tough situation. “Terribly sorry to hear that. But how about asking your dad to join us this Sunday morning?” Ollie hugged him tightly, eager to comfort him. James seemed hesitant at first, but nodded his head after a while, which made Ollie and I jump with joy.
On Sunday morning, James and his dad came to join us. The backyard was filled with the pleasant smell of waffles, French toast, and hot cocoa. We all shared stories about our mothers as we enjoyed the special brunch. James spoke softly about his mom, reminiscing about their Saturday night breakfast-for-dinner traditions. His father had a warm smile on his face as he listened and everyone present had a deliciously good time. My gaze met Ollie’s and we both smiled. It was a beautiful day filled with love and memories, the party a celebration of mothers past and present.

James shrugged.
But James didn't answer. He just picked up his pen and started to write.
James put his backpack over his shoulder. “Sorry. I'm busy that day.”
Ollie laughed. “Do you know the future? We didn't even choose a day yet.”
James took a deep breath, a sad look on his face.”
1. James终于吐露心声,说明妈妈此时不在身边,并陈述理由(理由可能多样:妈妈可能生重病此时无法见面/入狱/甚至去世);
2. 作者和Ollie的反应:震惊,并通过邀请他爸爸参加聚餐安慰他;
3. Ollie
On Sunday morning, James and his father came to join us.”
1.James和爸爸来我们后院参加聚餐的欢乐场景;
2.James具体举动,如分享与母亲相处的故事;拍聚餐照片准备给妈妈分享;或者留作纪念;
注意:范文仅供参考,第一段续写内容可能学生会写出不同于范文的母亲无法参加聚餐的原因,只要合理即可;
Ollie laughed. “Do you know the future? We didn't even choose a day yet.”
1.分档:
优秀:21—25 良好:16—20 较好:11—15 一般:6—10 较差:1—5;
2.书写:书写较差以致影响交际,酌情扣分(减2分);
3.词数:150左右(词数少于130的,减2分);
4.时态:应该和原文一致(用过去式,现在的转变除外)全错-5分(部分错误,根据错的程度酌情扣分);
5.拼写:3-4个错误扣1分;
(1)与所给短文及段落开头语的衔接程度;
(2)应用语法结构和词汇的丰富性和准确性;
(3)上下文的连贯性;

Text 2
M: War and Peace? That’s such a long book! Is it for school?

Text 3
W: Kevin, you’re so smart. This lake is the perfect place for a picnic. (3) What made you think of it?
M: My family once walked here and they were saying what a beautiful place it is.
Text 4
M: Excuse me, ma’am. Your bags look quite heavy. May I help you carry them to your car?
W: That would be a huge help. My husband is busy working at home, and these bags are too much for me to carry. (4)
M: It’s my pleasure. Where’s your car?
Text 5
M: These special T-shirts could provide protection from water.
W: But at what price? Regular T-shirts cost $20. These must cost much more!
M: That’s the best part. All viewers can get a discount on these T-shirts today. (5)
Text 6
W: Hi, I’m so sorry to bother you. We don’t know each other, (6) but you look so much like my friend, Wang Wei. I don’t suppose you know him.
M: Yes! He’s my older cousin. I’m Wang Li.
W: Oh, wow, you look exactly like him!
M: Our parents say that all the time!
W: Ha-ha!
M: How do you know Wang Wei? (7)
W: We worked together in Beijing. (7)
M: Oh, are you a lawyer, too?

W: Yes, the game between China and Japan. (8)
M: Of course I have. Japanese players beat us. (8)
W: What did you think about it?
M: Well, to be honest, I was quite upset. I guess nobody has ever expected that in my country. (8)
W: I see. But I felt different. (9)
M: That’s probably because you’re American.
W: I think it’s actually good for table tennis itself. I mean its global development. (9)
M: You mean we’ll see better skills and techniques?
W: Yes, exactly. Players from all over the world will be encouraged to develop their skills. It’s also good for people to learn to discuss the results of sports peacefully.
M: Yes, that’s true.
Text 8
M: Is that a smart watch? (10)
W: Yes! (10) My dad bought it for my birthday.
M: It’s cute! What can it do?
W: I can receive calls and texts, but I can’t really reply to texts on it. I can send symbols, like a smiling face, but that’s it. (10)
M: I see.
W: But it’s great for health and fitness! It counts my daily steps for me.
M: Right! You’re supposed to take 10,000 steps a day, aren’t you?
W: Yes, to maintain general fitness. But I aim to take at least 15,000 steps a day. (11)
M: How many have you done so far today? (11)
W: Let’s see…just over 8000. (11)
M: Not bad!
W: It has definitely encouraged me to be more active. I used to take the bus to school, if my parents couldn’t drive me. Now, I walk to school every day, (12) so I can get the steps!
Text 9
M: I think I’m going to order the chicken salad. What about you? (13)

W: You know, you really seem to be making an effort to be healthy these days, Dad.
M: Well, my doctor said that, at my age, I need to look after my heart.
W: And he’s right! But I’m really proud of you. Cycling to work, eating more vegetables, you’ve even joined a gym!
M: Well, it hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes I still want a nice fat cheeseburger! (14)
W: Well, it’s OK to eat your favorite foods sometimes. (14)
M: And I do. But I’d never go back to my old lifestyle. I’ve lost weight, and my blood pressure has reduced.
W: Great!
M: The best thing is how much more energy I have. (15) I was feeling so old. Now, I jump out of bed every morning!
W: I’m so pleased!
M: The only thing I still struggle with is drinking enough water. I hate the taste. (16)

Thailand welcomes more than 11 million visitors a year. All the same, travelers who
dream of sunny skies might be disappointed at the rain that arrives regularly every July.
Bangkok
The city's more than 320,000 restaurants serve a wide range of cuisines()from

experience besides temples.Unlike any other in Thailand,Northern Thai cuisine is
inspired as it is by foreign culture and nearly 200 years under Burmese rule.
Planning tip:From late February to early April,Chiang Mai is usually filled with
smoke from farmers burning land in the mountains to plant their crops.
Phuket
It is the biggest island in Thailand, but Phuket has an entirely different culture from
the rest of the country:a mix of Hokkien Chinese,Thai and Malaysian.Little wonder why
Phuket is one of Thailand's most-visited attraction.Phuket's architecture is also unique,
for it was ruled by the Portuguese.
Planning tip:September to October is Phuket's rainy season,so try to avoid the
island during this time. There are plenty of other great attractions beyond Phuket to consider
visiting too.

In 2015,Brian Peterson had just moved to Santa Ana.Outside the couple's fourth-
floor apartment,a homeless man was often yelling on the street corner.Peterson would pass
the guy on his way to his job,but they never spoke.
One day,Peterson was reading the book about the power of love.Inspired by the
book's compassionate message,Peterson made an unexpected decision:He was going to go
outside and introduce himself. In that first conversation,Peterson learned that the man's
name was Matt Faris. He fell on hard times and ended up living on the street."But his story
inspired me.Peterson recalled later.Peterson found himself asking if he could paint
Faris's portrait.
Peterson's connection with Faris led him to form Faces of Santa Ana,a nonprofit
organization focused on painting portraits of the homeless.Working from a black-and-white
photo,Peterson chooses colors inspired by life story, creating a portrait. He showed one
man winning his battle with alcoholism, for example,by changing the colors from a sad
blue to a brilliant red.Peterson sells the picture-signed by both subject and artist-for a
few thousand dollars, putting half for his model. He then helps people use the money to get
back on their feet.
"I've made so many mistakes thinking I knew what people wanted,"Peterson says,
"Then I realized:Why don't we just ask them?"Another subject,Kimberly Sondoval,
had never been able to financially support her daughter. She asked,"Can I use the money
to pay my daughter's rent?"When the check was delivered,"they both wept in my arms,"
Peterson recalls.
In the eight years since Faces of Santa Ana was established,Peterson has painted 41 of

Many factors can influence whether a patient lives or dies. However,in data from
different countries, patients seen by female doctors seem to do better than those seen by
male ones.
In 2017,Yusuke Tsugawa of Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues in Boston
analyzed the medical records of around 1.5million older adults who had been in hospital in
America between 2011 and 2014.They found that patients whose treatment had been
performed by a female doctor were about 4%less likely to die than those whose treatment
doctor was a man.
One disadvantage with the study is that it is retrospective, looking back at naturally
occurring data rather than random experiments. This could cover any factors which might be
really driving the effect, says Gavin Stewart,an expert at Newcastle University. It could be

that female doctors tend to be responsible for healthier patients than their male colleagues.
In an experiment where patients were randomly distributed among doctors, female doctors
seem to do better.
Researchers say the next step is to work out why."I don't think it's the presence or
absence of a Y chromosome(s染色体),”says Dr Chtistopher Wallis,“I think it's a series
of behaviours that are linked with gender."Past research has found that female doctors tend
to spend more time with patients, are more likely to provide preventive care and tend to
stick more closely to guidelines than their male colleagues do.This could reduce the risk of
deaths.
Understanding why such difference in care will help all doctors improve their practice.
For all things that advanced medical equipment and new drugs can do,a physician's
judgement seems to be as important.

A.Y chromosome determines gender differences.
B.Gender difference in care has different effects.
C.Female doctors are always assigned with healthier patients.
D.Male doctors could reduce the potential risk of deaths.
31.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.A doctor's judgement is as important as other factors.
B.Gender difference can't help improve doctors'treatment.
C.We should notice gender difference in doctors'treatment.
D.We could use doctors'judgement to improve his treatment.

Breakdancing (it was coined by journalists)has broken into the Olympics;it is the
only new event at this year's games.Yet despite its stress on dance"battles",breaking
has tended to take the sign of "sport"uneasily.

World DanceSport Federation(WDSF).In the past the WDSF focused its efforts on getting
ballroom dancing into the Olympics and hired Jean-Laurent Bourquin.Mr Bourquin said he
suggested the WDSF deliver what the Olympics were seeking:an event that would attract
young viewers.
Television viewership(收视率)of the games has decreased for years..So the
International Olympic Committee (IOC)has tried to attract new audiences with extreme
sports such as climbing and skateboarding.Breaking offers the benefits of being both
impressive and easy to follow. It was included in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires
in 2018,where it was a success.
Many breakers have been unenthusiastic about the Olympics. They have worried that
breaking culture will be misunderstanding in the tournament.Others have criticized that a
ballroom-dance organization pushes into breaking. In 2017 breakers criticized the WDSF
for trying to"exploit breaking as a Trojan horse to get its foot in the door of the Olympics".
But many breakers have recognized the bright.side of the Olympics. Now firms
including Nike and Ralph Lauren are sponsoring dancers. The games will attract many young
people to dance. However, breaking will not return in Los Angeles in 2028,as the IOC
limits the number of athletes at 10500.But what matters to breakers is using the publicity
from Paris to bring more money into the sports."It's just going to be less struggling for
everybody,"says Logan Edra,"Medal or not, that is a prize worth competing for."
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2 and paragraph 3?
A.Why breakers never welcome the Olympics.
B.Why WDSF puts breaking into the Olympics.
C.Why TV viewership of the Olympics is in decline.
D.Why IOC is willing to receive breaking as an event.
33.What was WDSF blamed for
A.Pushing breaking into the Olympics.
B.Never considering the feeling of breakers.
C.Making breaking culture misunderstanding.
D.Using breaking as a passport to the Olympics.

What does it mean to be creative?Oftentimes,we think about creativity as making
something entirely new and out of this world. This could be why so many people do not
think of themselves as creative.36 We are all born creative. It is not all-or-nothing
(全有或全无的)quality or skill, neither is it something that is genetic.
37 Much like a muscle in our bodies,it needs to be exercised in order to be
strengthened. It is a way in which we challenge and express ourselves, giving us the ability
to think out of the box.Sometimes the path to creative productivity is being willing to resist
the trend and intentionally do something differently.
Creativity is rarely about the end product, nor is it about that satisfaction moment.
38 We can find inspiration in almost anything and practise creativity through typically
ordinary chores. We can start by documenting things or experiences which we find
interesting, taking photographs and collecting souvenirs to spark new ideas.
By recognizing the opportunities in our daily lives to trigger our creativity,no matter
how small,we may become more comfortable with taking bigger creative leaps in other
aspects of our lives.
If we face a creative block (as we all do at some point),sometimes completing an
ordinary task has an interesting way of leading us to that perfect idea. While we may think
that completing that terrible chore or going on a casual walk may not do anything to get our
creative juices flowing, the routine of completing another task can often speed up our
creativity. In addition, the sense of accomplishment that we feel after completing an
