Whether you’re brand new to hiking or looking to discover your next favorite trail (路线), hiking apps might be the tool to help you get there. Take a look at the list below and choose one that meets your needs.
1.G-GPS
G-GPS is one of the most popular navigation (导航) tools designed for remote mountainous areas. For some hikers, dependable maps and an easily searchable trail database are a must for a hiking app. G-GPS has both, which makes it a great option for beginners and expert hikers alike. It provides data like pace, distance and increased height. Moreover, it works fine when you’re offline and without cell service.
If you’re a fan of cold-temperature hiking, this app’s paid version ($40) has a winter map choice that displays features to help navigate in snowy weather.
2.P-Finder
Many hikers tend to have the experience of standing on a peak, looking at another mountain and wondering “What peak is that?”
If you’d like to avoid the problem, P-Finder might be the app for you. It takes the guesswork out of your exploration, thanks to its unique offering: a 360° view of mountain peaks and their names from your current location, requiring no Internet connection. Plus, all levels of hikers can use it, especially for finding new peaks to hike.
Added bonus: The app has some practical functions, which allow you to take some breathtaking shots and then automatically (自动地) label each peak with its correct name.
You can buy the app for $5 on its official website.
3.N-Land
N-Land Digital is a Canadian nonprofit that helps expert hikers to learn more about their local history and the Indigenous territories (土著领地).
By entering your address, a number of links will appear with the names of different Indigenous nations. Clicking on those links, you will be taken to a page specifically about that nation, language, or treaty, where you can view some sources, give feedback, and learn a little more. You can even do this if you’re offline. This app is an ongoing project, and maps of new territories are regularly added.
You’ll likely want to use this app together with another app such as A-Trails or V-Ranger, if you’re also seeking navigational help.
21. Which app can provide a whole view of mountain peaks?
A. G-GPS. B. P-Finder. C. N-Land. D. A-Trails.

Adom Appiah, is not your typical High School Junior. He has taken his volunteerism to a whole new level by starting a nonprofit charity organization called Ball4Good.
Amazingly, this innovative organization was a result of Adom’s 7th grade school assignment. At age 12, his history teacher, Mrs. Kelsea Turner, at Spartanburg Day School, had challenged her students to dedicate 20% of their class time to a service project. She suggested that they research a community need and then work independently on finding a solution. Adom was inspired.
Adom had great passion for playing sports as a soccer and basketball player. So, he naturally thought of combining sports and community support into an athletics-oriented service project. His idea was to invite athletes, leaders and celebrities to play ball games to raise money for local charities.
Ball4Good held its first Celebrity Basketball Game in 2017. He used donations received on his 13th birthday as seed money for the event. It was a huge success and raised over $70,000 for 13 local charities.
Then, Adom’s idea has transformed into a movement that is helping communities through various ways such as celebrity sport events, charity drives and fundraising. It donates raised funds to various causes affecting children, such as autism, homelessness, abuse and cancer.
If all these accomplishments about Ball4Good were not enough, the teen has also authored three motivational children’s books to inspire students to change the world and bounce back from failures. Donations from book sales have supported several charitable causes. In addition, he won a National Award (Gloria Barron for Young Heroes, 2019) that comes with a $10,000 prize for his public service efforts. Having multiple projects has not slowed Adom down, as he is currently hosting his own show called Kids Changing the World on TV.
“I try to have kids involved in every step of the way, so they can figure out how things work in the business and philanthropist world,” Adom said. He wants people to know that success starts with believing in yourself. His goal is to expand Ball4Good’s reach. He believes that by encouraging others to get involved, he’s multiplying the impact of Ball4Good.
24. What inspired Adom Appiah to start Ball4Good?
A. Passion for sports and support from a community.
B. A school assignment given by his history teacher.
C. His experiences of being a soccer and basketball player.
D. Athletes, leaders and celebrities he invited to play games.
25. According to the passage, we can learn that Ball4Good .
A. aims to promote community sports
B. held its first activity with Adom’s own savings
C. helps communities simply through celebrity sport events
D. uses raised money to help children in various difficulties
26. Which of the following can best describe Adom Appiah?
A. Kind and humorous. B. Generous and patient.
C. Innovative and inspiring. D. Hardworking and reliable.

I watch documentaries, not movies. I read history books, not fiction. I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America, I like it. But this fixation on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots.
New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline-in a speech. “We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressures, and it sort of weakens the thinking about character and morality.”
Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement. Forcing as many success-building activities into their schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep. “Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-improving activity to the next,” Brooks wrote in an article, “We fear failure more than we desire success.”
A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual.
Chilosopher Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds. Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning (演绎推理). Clouds cannot be taken apart. Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way.
“When we have a Cloud problem, we try to turn it into a Clock problem,” Brooks said. And in a reason-centered culture, adding titles to one’s resume becomes a trend. At American University, 85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent of business majors) graduate with at least one practical experience which is often helpful to a student’s future career, but can sometimes draw focus away from academics.
To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human natures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person. “Synchronicity is key to happiness,” he said. Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own.
27. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people ______ .
A. are controlled by time B. are eager to achieve more
C. are changing their characters D. are keen on reading books
28. What is the author’s attitude towards colleges that existed a century ago?
A. Tolerant. B. Uncertain. C. Approving. D. Curious.
29. The purpose of this passage is to ______ .
A. criticize students’ desire for achievements
B. stress the importance of productivity
C. warn about the pressure to seek success
D. bring awareness to character building
D
Have you ever bought a new car and started noticing the exact color and model of car everywhere? Has that type of car just become popular in your city? Were they there before? Or are you just going crazy?
You’re not going crazy. The reason you are now just noticing them is what psychologists call “priming”. Basically, the cars were always there. You just didn’t recognize them consciously. However, when that certain model of car becomes part of your conscious thinking, you start “automatically” recognizing all of the other cars that are the same, because you are already “primed” to do so.
The priming effect takes many forms. In one study, students were asked to walk around a room for 5 minutes at a rate of 30 steps per minute, which was about one-third their normal pace. After this brief experience, the participants were much quicker to recognize words related to old age, such as forgetful, old, and lonely. Reciprocal priming effects tend to produce a coherent reaction: if you are primed to think of old age, you would tend to act old, and acting old would reinforce the thought of old age. This research shows that the way we think influences the way we act, and the way we act influences the way we think.
A similar conclusion was reached by the American psychologist William James a century ago, but he emphasized the effect on feeling. “Actions seem to follow feeling, but really actions and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not. Thus the path to cheerfulness, should our cheerfulness be lost, is to sit up cheerfully and to act and speak as if cheerfulness were already there.”
So, that’s it. If you want to be happy, just sit up and act happy. Based on these scientific findings, we can adopt certain priming effects to help make ourselves consistently happier.
One thing we have in common is our ability to think, and thus feel. Pleasant thoughts have been proven to produce the chemicals that make us feel happy, particularly thoughts and feelings of gratitude. When we purposefully go through and think about the things we’re grateful for and deliberately feel as much gratitude as we can, we are flooding our mind with the “happy chemicals”. Furthermore, by consciously thinking, feeling and expressing gratitude, we will not only be happier in the moment, we will be “primed” to recognize the things in our life to appreciate. Each time this happens, the “happy chemicals” will be produced. Do this every day and we will become consistently happier. This makes up for the momentary happiness we gain from eating chocolate or buying new clothes. More than that, combining thoughts of gratitude with happy acts like smiling and laughing will have a supplementary positive effect on our state of mind.
30. Which of the following is an example of the priming effect?
A. Walking much faster after attending a lecture about old age.
B. Donating money to the poor after seeing pictures of cute cats.
C. Learning about various types of cars after purchasing the first car.
D. Completing SO_P as SOUP rather than SOAP after seeing the word EAT.
31. What does the underlined word “reciprocal” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Related. B. Two-way. C. Well-rounded. D. Opposite.
32. What will the author probably agree with?
A. Eating or shopping leads to consistent feelings of happiness.
B. Our will has greater control over emotions than over actions.
C Happy chemicals make us think about the things we’re grateful for.
D. Practicing gratitude frequently prepares us for long-term happiness.
33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Prime Yourself to Be Happier
B. Share Happiness to Enhance Wellbeing
C. Why Gratitude Is Important in Psychology
D. How Happy Chemicals Affect People’s Thoughts
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you get in a car, you expect it will have functioning brakes. When you pick up medicine at the drugstore, you expect it won’t be polluted. But it wasn’t always like this. The safety of these products was terrible when they first came to market. It took much research and regulation to figure out how users can enjoy the benefits of these products without getting harmed. ___34___
Social media risks are everywhere. The dangers that algorithms designed to maximize attention represent to teens have become impossible to ignore. Other product design elements, often called “dark patterns,” designed to keep people using for longer, also appear to tip young users into social media overuse. ___35___ They say it’s their users’ fault for engaging with harmful content in the first place, even if those users are children or the content is financial trickery. They also claim to be defending free speech.
___36___ Under the Digital Services Act, which came into effect in Europe this year, platforms are required to take action to stop the spread of illegal content and can be fined up to 6 percent of their global incomes if they don’t do so. If this law is enforced, maintaining the safety of their algorithms and networks will be the most financially sound decision for platforms to make.
Despite these efforts two things are clear. First, online safety problems are leading to real, offline suffering. Second, social media companies can’t, or won’t, solve these safety problems on their own. ___37___ Even safety issues like cyberbullying that we thought were solved can pop right back up. As our society moves online to an ever-greater degree, the idea that anyone, even teens, can just “stay off social media” becomes less and less realistic. ___38___
A. And those problems aren’t going away.
B. The current issues aren’t really about offline suffering.
C. Platforms already have systems to remove violent or harmful content.
D. Similarly, social media needs product safety standards to keep users safe.
E. It’s time we should require social media to take safety seriously, for everyone’s sake.
F. Internet platforms, however, have shifted blame on the consumers whenever criticized.
G. Some authorities are taking steps to hold social media platforms accountable for the content.

【61题答案】
【答案】Dear Peter,
I was quite surprised to hear that you’re considering giving up on learning Chinese due to some difficulties. Please don’t lose heart! Everyone encounters challenges when learning a new language, and failure is just a part of the learning process. What’s important is how we respond to it.
Learning Chinese can indeed be tough, but I suggest you practice listening and speaking as much as possible, and try to communicate with native Chinese speakers. This will not only improve your oral skills but also give you a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. Additionally, there are many online resources available, which provide a wealth of learning materials and exercises.
Remember, learning takes time and patience. I believe that if you keep going, you’ll definitely achieve great results.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
