How far would you go to help a friend? Jeremy Savage and Ian Marshall had their friendship tested to the limit on a recent trip to the Rocky Mountains with their parents.
On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb a mountain nearby on their own. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come.
Meanwhile, as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried about the boys. They called park workers and began searching for the boys.
While waiting for help, Jeremy gave Ian his food and let him lie on his jacket. As the evening grew darker and the temperature dropped, Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents but Jeremy still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold windy night. Jeremy used his jacket to keep Ian warm and they rested together through the night.
At sunrise, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, they started the long climb back to the campsite. Jeremy carried Ian on his back. Finally, after four long and tiring hours, they came across their relieved parents, who were still looking for them on the mountain. “I will always remember what Jeremy did for me,” said Ian afterwards. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

C
Choosing the Right Resolution (决定)
Millions of Americans began 2014 with the same resolution they started 2013 with, a goal of losing weight. However, setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake.
To reach our goal of losing weight — the output, we need to control what we eat — the input (输入). That is, we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construct goals. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input. Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution: “I’ll stop having desert for lunch,” or “I’ll walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome.
Recently a new science behind incentives (激励), including in education, has been discussed. For example, researcher Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives increased achievement when based on input but had no effect on output. Fryer’s conclusion was that the intensives for inputs might be more effective because do not know how to do better on exam, aside from general rules like “study harder.” Reading certain books, on the other hand, is a well-set task over which they have much more control.
As long as you have direct control over your goal, you have a much higher chance of success. And it’s easier to start again if you fail, because you know exactly what you need to do.
If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be making morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe, for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily. Spending less money isn’t a goal because it’s too general. Similarly, if you want to spend more time with your family, don’t stop with this general wish. Think about an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night every Wednesday.
In the long run, these new goals could become a habit.
27. The writer thinks that setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake because .
A. it is hard to achieve for most Americans
B. it is focused too much on the result
C. it is dependent on too many things
D. it is based on actionable decisions
28. In Roland Fryer’s research, some students did better than the others because .
A. they obeyed all the general rules
B. they paid more attention to exams
C. they were motivated by their classmates
D. they were rewarded for reading some books
29. According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal?
A. “I’ll give up dessert.”
B. “I’ll study harder.”
C. “I’ll cut down my expense”
D. “I’ll spend more time with my family”
30. The writer strongly believes that we should .
A. develop good habits and focus on the outcome
B. be optimistic about final goals and stick to them
C. pick specific actions that can be turned into good habits
D. set ambitious goals that can balance the input and output
B 28. D 29. A 30. C
根据第二段中“To reach our goal of losing weight—the output, we need to control what we eat—the input (输入). That is, we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construct goals. (为了达到减肥的目标——输出,我们需要控制我们的饮食——输入。也就是说,我们倾向于关心输出,而不是控制输入。这不是一种构建目标的好方法。)”和“Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome. (创建一个专注于明确输入的目标可能比专注于结果更有效。)”可知,作者认为把减肥作为一个目标是错误的,因为过于注重结果。故选B项。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“For example, researcher Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based on output, like results on exams. (例如,研究人员Roland Fryer想看看什么能最有效地激励孩子在学校表现得更好。在某些情况下,他根据输入给学生奖励,比如阅读某些书籍,而在其他情况下,奖励是基于输出,比如考试成绩。)”可知,在Roland Fryer的研究中,因为有些学生读了一些书而得到了奖励,所以他们比其他人做得更好。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution: “I’ll stop having desert for lunch ” or “I’ll walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome.(与其下定决心减肥,不如尝试一个切实可行的决心:“我午饭不再吃甜点”或“我每天步行20分钟”。制定一个专注于明确输入的目标可能比专注于结果更有效)”及第三段“Fryer’s conclusion was that the intensives for inputs might be more effective because students do not know how to do better on exam aside from general rules like “study harder.” Reading certain books on the other hand is a well-set task over which they have much more control.(弗莱尔的结论是,强化输入可能更有效,因为学生不知道如何在考试中取得更好的成绩,除了像“更努力地学习”这样的一般规则。另一方面,阅读某些书籍是一项很好的任务,他们有更多的控制权)”及文章倒数第二段“If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be making morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily. Spending less money isn’t a goal because it’s too general. Similarly if you want to spend more time with your family don’t stop with this general wish. Think bout an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to like a family movie night every Wednesday.(如果你想减少开支,一个很好的目标是早上在家里煮咖啡,而不是去咖啡馆。 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“Similarly, if you want to spend more time with your family, don’t stop with this general wish. Think about an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night every Wednesday. (同样,如果你想花更多的时间和家人在一起,不要止步于这个普遍的愿望。想一个你可以养成并坚持的可行习惯,比如每周三全家一起看电影。)”可知,作者建议我们应该选择可以变成好习惯的具体行动。故选C项。
D
Young students are often considered “digital natives,” with technology integrated into every aspect of their lives. While this can be an advantage in some situations, research has shown that the impact is not entirely positive—the Internet allows them to quickly find information at the cost of significant distraction in class. Without being attentive, students will be incapable of processing information, which means they’re not going to be able to understand, analyse, criticise and come to some decision about the information.
When students can’t seem to focus, a common idea among teachers is that short is good. Many teachers simply cut lessons into smaller pieces. Some teachers begin classes with mindfulness exercises when students need to concentrate. However, it turns out that any sort of “tech breaks” could counteract the desires to come back to study.
Some teachers also choose to “meet students where they are” on platforms like YouTube. A 2018 study from Pearson found that students tended to stay away from physical books, preferring video as a source of information second only to teachers. By meeting students where they already engage and create, teachers can better catch attention.
However, while some educators are welcoming technology in the classroom, multiple studies have shown more traditional classrooms can be more successful. A 2014 study found taking notes in longhand helped students withhold information better than using a laptop. Researchers also point out switching between short teaching pieces too quickly could take valuable comprehension from the students. Students need time to engage with a topic before moving on.
Even many tech advocates find value in traditional methods and suggest an integrated learning. They agree teachers’ authority remains vital and the face-to-face interaction between students and teachers is still the primary component in the classroom. Technology will be favoured only when it improves a lesson in ways that are impossible offline.
Success is no longer about knowing the most. Instead, it’s the ability to think critically and creatively, the very skills that digital media weakens by lowering attention spans. If you think of people who became successful in the tech world, it wasn’t because they could code; it was because they could think. Digital natives will continue to eagerly adopt new media. Teachers have no choice but to upgrade themselves, not only to ensure students can access and take advantage of new technologies, but to educate students to succeed in a world constantly trying to distract them.
31. What result has technology brought to students?
A. It urges them to process information.
B. It prevents them obtaining information.
C. It ruins their possible classroom distraction.
D. It damages their ability to digest information.
32. What does the underlined word “counteract” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Maintain. B. Motivate. C. Reduce. D. Replace.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Direct instruction takes priority in lessons.
B. Digital resources will weaken offline learning.
C. Small lessons can engage students in learning.
D. Laptop noting helps students gain knowledge better.
34. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Students need to learn to get rid of social media.
B. Teachers should progress to educate the young generation.
C. The benefits of technology on education outweigh its harm.
D. Traditional methods are favoured by both teachers and students.
D 32. C 33. A 34. B

根据第二段第三句话“Some teachers begin classes with mindfulness exercises when students need to concentrate.”(当学生需要集中注意力时,一些老师开始上课时进行正念练习。)
根据第五段第一、二句话“Even many tech advocates find value in traditional methods and suggest an integrated learning. They agree teachers’ authority remains vital and the face-to-face interaction between students and teachers is still the primary component in the classroom. ”(甚至许多技术倡导者也发现传统方法的价值,并建议进行综合学习。他们同意教师的权威仍然至关重要,师生面对面的互动仍然是课堂的主要组成部分。)可知,在教学当中,我们应该遵循传统的方法,老师和学生面对面教学,老师对学生做出直接的指导应该在教学中占优先地位。故选A。
通读全文,并结合最后一段最后一句话“Teachers have no choice but to upgrade themselves, not only to ensure students can access and take advantage of new technologies, but to educate students to succeed in a world constantly trying to distract them.”(教师别无选择,只能自我提升,这不仅是为了确保学生能够接触和利用新技术,也是为了教育学生在一个不断试图分散他们注意力的世界中取得成功。)

Nobody likes to feel anxious. Anxiety is among the most common and criticized of human emotions. Studies show that over 100 million people in the U.S. will suffer from an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Rates, especially among the young, have been rising for the past decade. It seems, then, that our efforts to contain anxiety aren’t working.
As a clinical psychologist and neuroscience researcher, I believe that we mental health professionals have made a terrible mistake. Feeling anxious isn’t the problem. The problem is that we don’t understand how to respond constructively to anxiety. That’s why it’s increasingly hard to know how to feel good.
This “bad” feeling isn’t a failure of mental health. It’s a triumph of human evolution: the ability to think about the uncertain future and prepare for it. The unpleasant emotion, for example, fear, signals that you may be in danger—from a predator, bully or speeding car—and readies your body and mind to fight or take flight.
Anxiety, by contrast, has nothing to do with present threats. Instead, it turns you into a mental time traveler, drawing your attention to what lies ahead. Will you succeed or fail in that interview for a job you desperately want? Anxiety prompts your mind and body into action. Your worries force you to prepare thoroughly for the interview, while your heart races and pumps blood to your brain so that you stay sharp and focused, prepared to pursue your goals.
Research has also shown something that many scientists didn’t expect: higher levels of dopamine (多巴胺) when we’re anxious. We have long known that dopamine soars when an experience is pleasurable and also in anticipation of rewards. The fact that anxiety also boosts dopamine levels points to its role in making positive possibilities into reality.
Many of us feel overwhelmed by lasting anxiety and don’t see any benefit from it. We have come to believe that the best way to cope is to get rid of it. But treating anxiety like a disease prevents us from distinguishing between ordinary anxiety and anxiety disorders. We need to develop a new mindset about this misunderstood emotion. Anxiety can’t do its job unless it makes us uncomfortable, forcing us to sit up and pay attention. We don’t need to like anxiety—just to use it in the right way.
50. Why is it increasingly hard for us to know how to feel good?
_____________________________________________________________
51. How does anxiety help one in a job interview?
_____________________________________________________________
52. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Research has shown that dopamine soars when an experience is pleasurable, but it is in lower levels when we are anxious.
_____________________________________________________________
53. How do you cope with anxiety positively in your daily life? (In about 40 words)
_____________________________________________________________
50. Because we don’t understand how to respond constructively to anxiety.
51. It prompts one’s mind and body into action and it helps him/her to stay sharp and focused in the interview, prepared to pursue his/her goals.
52. Research has shown that dopamine soars when an experience is pleasurable, but it is in lower levels when we are anxious.
Because dopamine is in higher levels when we are anxious.
We should develop a good mindset about this misunderstood emotion and try to use it in the right way in our daily life, which can help us get rid of it gradually. I’m usually anxious about the tons of work ahead. To deal with it, I make a checklist of the tasks in order of priority. Whenever I finish one, I’ll tick it off. In this way, anxiety pushes me forward and I translate it into productivity.

However while some educators are welcoming technology in the classroom, multiple studies have shown more traditional classrooms can be more successful.

51. How does anxiety help one in a job interview?
