Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them do their home-lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed—pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the large house was over.
One day two men came to see Father. Minutes passed. Father’s voice came out from the study, loud and angry.
More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, “Father’s been called away—on business.”
A week after their father went away, their mother said, “Now, we’re going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys.”
The family started packing—clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs. “We seem to be taking all the ugly things,” said Roberta.
“We’re taking the useful ones,” said Mother. “We’ve got to play at being poor for a bit.”
Peter said joyously, “I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month.” Mother laughed and said, “I don’t like moving!”
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it.
“Oh, Mother,” she said in a low voice, “how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that!”
Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.

If Confucius was still alive today and could celebrate his September 28th birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing idea. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese study programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks (缺点) of Westerners’ philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, even if few can remember his birthday, he will not be forgotten by people in the West.
33. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By showing facts.
C. By giving an example. D. By imagining a picture.
34. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards spreading Chinese culture to the world?
A. Worried. B. Stressed. C. Confident. D. Devoted.
35. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Students in the USA take an active part in studying Chinese now.
B. Businessmen in the USA prefer Chinese customers to Confucius.
C. People in the Western countries never forget Confucius’ birthday.
D. America has set up Confucius Institutes to learn Chinese culture better.
36. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Big Fans of the Big Hero. B. Old Thinker with a Big Future.
C. Forgotten Wisdom in America. D. Chinese Culture all over the world.

①More scientists are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor the environment and support endangered creatures (生物). Unlike traditional ways that can damage the environment or require considerable (相当多的) time and physical work, AI has the ability to quickly and effectively deal with large quantities of data (数据). Let’s learn more details together.
②Creatures are disappearing at a speed thousands of times faster than that millions of years ago, with one million creatures endangered. The United Nations set a goal in 2020 to safeguard at least 30% of Earth’s land and oceans by the end of 2030. “AI is imperfect but could make important discoveries faster and earlier.” says Nicolas Miailhe, founder of The Future Society, an organization that aims to better manage AI. “We need skilled humans to design AI models and check and collect data.”
③A type of AI model called a convolutional neural network (CNN) has been developed to recognize bird sounds. The CNN is able to pick out 75 kinds of the birds the scientists have. “Our results prove that AI is ready for recognizing creatures in the wild from sound.” says Maller, the team leader. “All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans.”
④Besides monitoring creatures in real time, AI can be used to model the impacts of human activities on the environment and rebuild historical changes. Scientists have used AI to discover how a century’s environmental damage in a river has led to creature loss.
⑤Although it is well-known that human activities have resulted in creature loss in rivers and lakes, little is known about which activities have the largest impact. “AI will do soon,” says Luisa Orsini, a scientist from the University of Birmingham.
37. What can we infer from Nicolas Miailhe’s and Maller’s words?
A. AI models are designed imperfectly.
B. AI models have already developed perfectly.
C. AI’s ability needs CNN to discover and achieve.
D. AI’s ability is much greater than what people imagine.
38. The meaning of the underlined word “impact” in Paragraph 5 is the closest to ________.

八、阅读与回答问题 (本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Inner painting, a kind of traditional Chinese art, is marked as a national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Inner painting artists traditionally create works on the inner surface of the glass bottle by using special fine brushes that can enter the tiny bottles. It has a long history and is mainly divided into four major schools: Beijing, Hebei, Shandong, and Guangdong.
When we look at the inner painting of an object, we experience an indescribable beauty. Patterns on the painting often symbolize people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most marketable ones are landscapes (风景), followed by flowers and birds.
The production of inner painting is difficult because it requires high precision (精确) and the process of painting is totally reversed (反向的). During painting, there is no room for corrections. And a shaky hand leads to mistakes. Only those skilled and confident in their abilities can paint well. Most artists need to learn inner painting for years before creating great and fine pieces. Even if they already know how to paint, they need to practice drawing lines from the beginning when they start inner painting.
Inner painting has its advantages due to its uniqueness (独特性), but it also faces challenges such as limited market needs, and a shortage of learners and talented artists to drive its development.
Luckily, today’s artists are trying to make inner painting more included in our lives. It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets and folding screens. One of the artists invented a new type of brush, which improved the speed of drawing. Some young artists are making use of social media to help more people learn about inner painting skills.
Looking ahead to the future, the inner painting artists wish the art to be more available to the public, and win high market acceptance. They also hope inner painting courses can be offered at school for young people to take.
76. Where do inner painting artists traditionally create their works?

They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform. At that moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

A. influence B. chance C. secret D. purpose
39. What is the structure of the passage?
A. ①②③/④⑤ B. ①②/③④⑤ C. ①②/③④/⑤ D. ①/②③④⑤
40. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. AI can collect training data on its own.
B. Creatures are disappearing faster than before.
C. Scientists have prevented a century’s environmental damage.
D. AI has spent more time dealing with large quantities of data than before.
