In 1939,seven-year-old Miriam Schreiber should have started first grade.Instead, she spent that year-and
the following five-trying to survive. She was living in Poland when World War II broke out."My entire life was
ruined within minutes,"she says."I was looking forward to starting school."She never made it.And not having a
degree has always been a thom in her side.
Decades later, though, the now-89-year-old Holocaust survivor finally got something she had always longed for.
Kapiloff Brander, director of community programs at Jewish Family Services, reached out to the New England
Jewish Academy,a Jewish high school,to ask whether the school could help Mariam fulfill her wish.Richard Nabel,
the principal of the school, brought a few senior students to Miriam's home to hear her story before they came up
with the idea of presenting her an honorary diploma at the school's 2020 graduation ceremony.
Miriam suffered a lot in a slave labor camp in Siberia before she got liberated in 1946.She and her remaining
family members went to a refugee camp in Germany, where she got married and had her first child at the age of 16.
Having spent years in refugee camps in different countries, she finally immigrated to America in 1960.Getting a
formal education was never an option for her but she learned seven languages over the years."I educated myself,"
she says."I read books day and night.I still do.".
On August 16,during a socially distanced ceremony in the school gym,Miriam was presented with a high
school diploma from the New England Jewish Academy."There weren't too many dry eyes among the 30 of us
there,"says Nabel.Miriam's family was especially moved."I'm not sure she even realizes the importance of that
moment to me,"says Bernie, her eldest son."I am so proud of her."

Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it's gotten to a new height literally.Microplastic,
referring to plastic fragments and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found on Mount
Qomolangma as high as 8,440 meters above sea level, just 408.86 meters below the peak of the mountain,
according to a recent study published in the journal One Earth.
"These are the highest microplastics ever discovered so far."lead author Imogen Napper from the University of
Plymouth,UK,said in a statement.Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from
4,200 meters above sea level all the way up to the summit of Mount Qomolangma. They found microplastics in all
the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal
where most human activities on the mountain are concentrated.Il had 79 particles of microplastics per liter of snow.
But how have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance? The answer is apparent
human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain.Even if they don't litter, just walking for
20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can release microplastics into the environment.
The harsh fact is that plastic pollution has reached even the most remote places on Earth.Researchers even
found a plastic bag at the deepest point in the world's oceans-in the Mariana Trench.located in the Pacific Ocean.
The bag is the same as the ones commonly used in grocery stores.Even covered in ice.the Arctic is still a victim of
plastic pollution.A 2020 report published in Nature suggests that there are 2.000 to 17,000 plastic particles per cubic
meter in Arctic ice cores, and between 0 to 18 microplastic particles per cubic meter from the water beneath ice floes
Experts think microplastics may be transported by air and then reach the North Pole in snowfall.
"What we don't yet fully know is the potential problems these tiny pieces of plastic could be having to
ecosystems,to organisms and even to our own health as well,"said Christian Dunn of Bangor University,UK.Then
what can we do?"We need to start focusing on deeper technological solutions that focus on microplastics, like
changing fabric design and including natural fibers instead of plastic when possible."
32.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A.The polluted samples from tic peak were the most serious.
B.Plastic pollution has been discovered at high altitudes.
C.Humans have climbed to the peak of Mount Qomolangma
D.Microplastics are a newly-found material by researchers.
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A.Microplastics may go far beyond the range of human activities.
B.The means of microplastics transportation has been confirmed.
C.There are frequent exchanges between Arctic ice cores and ice floes.
D.Bags from grocery stores are the main source of plastic pollution.
34.According to Christian Dunnx the key to addressing microplastic pollution is
Ato prohibit the use of plastic products
B.to diversify the design of microplastics
C.to apply only natural fibrous alternatives
D.to develop more advanced technologies
35.Which of the following is the best title?
'A.Litter in the Mariana Trench
B.New One Earth Campaigns
C.Pollution Reaches New Height
D.Adventurous Human Activists

If you start a sentence with,"If I were you..."or find yourself scratching your head over a decision when the
answer is crystal-clear,there's a scientific reason behind it.Our own decision-making abilities can become
exhausted over the course of the day causing indecision or poor choices, but choosing on behalf of someone else is
an enjoyable task that doesn't suffer the same difficulties.
"The problem is decision fatigue,a psychological phenomenon that causes harm to the quality of your choices
after a long day of decision making,"says Evan Polman,a leading psychologist.
Physicians on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics (to
patients when it's unwise to do so."Presumably it's because it's simple and easy to write a prescription and consider
a patient case closed rather than investigate further,"Polman says.
But decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else. When people imagine
themselves as advisers, they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts."By taking upon the role of adviser
rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue,"he says."It is as if there is
something fun about making someone else's choice."
"Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process,it often also includes riskier
choices. While this sounds undesirable,it can be quite good. When people experience decision fatigue, when they
are tired of making choices, they have a tendency to choose to go with status quo,"says Polman."But it cani be
problematic since a change in the course of action can be important and lead to a positive outcome."
"Just because you can make good choices for others doesn't mean you'll do the same tor yourseit,"Poiman
cautions."Research has found that women negotiate higher salaries for others than they do for themselves,"he says,
adding that people slip in and out of decision roles.
36.What does the author say about people making decisions?
A.They tend to make decisions the way they think advantageous to them.
B.They may become exhausted making too many decisions for themselves.
C.They show considerable differences in their decision-making abilities.
D.They are more cautious in making decisions for others than for themselves.
37.When do people feel less decision fatigue?
A.When they take decision shortcuts
B.When they have advisers to turn to.
C.When they have major decisions to make.
D.When they help others to make decisions.
38.What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in?
A.They avoid trying anything new.
B.They turn to physicians for advice
C.They tend to make risky decisions.
D.They adopt a totally new perspective.
39.What does the passage say about taking some risk in:decision making?
A.It will enable people to be more creative.
B.It will more often than not end in regret.
C.It is vital for one to reach the goal desired.
D.It is likely to bring about serious consequence

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Memorizing a speech in one night is not an easy task, but it's possible. There are hundreds of different
memorization techniques out there.40
Write out the entire speech.Simply take a piece of paper and a pen and write out the entire speech.41
(高一英语第7页共10页)
Many pcople memorize information better when they are actively recording it.Copying the speech on another piece
of paper can help to commit that information to memory.
42 Much like writing the speech out on paper, typing the speech can also help commit the information
to memory through visual learning.Since typing is generally faster than handwriting, you may have more time to
type the speech several times in one night. There is no need to print the typed speech each time that you type it.
However, you may be more likely to remember things that are handwritten rather than typed.
Rehearse your speech for a friend.43It is important to practice the speech in front of someone to
ensure that you really know the information.Request that your friend give you some tips. They may be able to tell
you if you are not speaking loud enough or if you are talking too quickly.
Record yourself rehearsing the speech. If you don't have anyone to practice with, try recording yourself while
you rehearse your speech.Video recording is the best because you will be able to watch the recording and critique
your speech and body language.44
Avoid trying to memorize the speech word for word.Normally,it is not necessary to recite a speech word for
word.It is more important to remember all of the topics that you need to cover during the speech.Spend time
memorizing the bullet points, important facts and statistics.and the layout of your speech in order to guarantee that
you cover all of the information that needs to be covered.
A.Type up the speech.
B.Make a list of things that scare you about the speech.
C.If the speech is relatively short, consider writing it out multiple times.
D.However, the best method is the basic,tried-and-true strategy of repetition and practice.
E.It is important to remember to take care of your body even when you are cramming for a presentation.
F.You can also listen to the recording while you are doing other things to help remember the information.
G.Sometimes you may think that you know your speech well, but you freeze up when you perform it in front of
people.

Finding and keeping friends is a skill that can take some time to develop.
From around the age of four, children develop an understanding that other people may have thoughts, interests
and feelings that are different to theirs. This emerging capacity, known as Theory of Mind, helps children make
friends, says Eileen Kennedy-Moore,a clinical psychologist."They become better at imagining someone else's
perspective and this stimulates more intimate()friendships."
classroom,says Kennedy-More."It is a love the onc you're with'approach."
"The thing that kids have as an advantage over adults is that they are in the room with 25 others in their stage
of life,"she says."In adulthood it takes thoughtful effort to find and develop friendships."According to one study,
adults must spend around 50 hours together to go from mere acquaintance (to a casual friend,90 hours
together before they consider each other as friends, and more than 200 hours to become close friends who share an
emotional connection.
Psychologists say best friendships can help children prepare for close relationships, including romantic ones,as
they grow up.
"Best friendship is really like falling in love,"says Kennedy-Moore."Close friendships in childhood help kids
practice the skills they need in intimate relationships throughout their lives. They learn about other people, and
about themselves,to deal with feelings like envy, loneliness, and sadness."
"If children don't talk about friends at home,it doesn't mean they don't have any,"she says, adding that this
may because they prefer a quieter style of interacting with others.
Parents can help their children in developing friendships by organizing fun meet-ups outside of school.
"The formula is:watch then get involved."says Kennedy-More."Parents should teach their children to watch what
other children are doing, then encourage them to slide into the action without interrupting."
45.What capacity do children develop from about the age of four according to Kennedy-Moore?
46.What is the disadvantage for adults to develop friendships compared with children?
47.Please decide which part is false in the following statcment;then underline it and explain why.
Parents can support their children in forming friendships by organizing fun meet-ups outside of school and
