Each passage is followed by several questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time. I spent three busy days in the Italian capital, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit with Christmas decorations. Here are the things that I loved most about the city. Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt exotic animals. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can’t quite believe how old they are. I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. We walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures. The best part of the visit was, without a doubt, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by the great Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it. In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn’t very good quality. I made an effort to find authentic restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also loved eating ice cream and hot chocolate under the Christmas lights. Rome has lots of luxury boutiques but also plenty of shops that were more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree. I love seeing new places, especially capital cities. I have been very lucky this year because I also visited Amsterdam and New York in the summer. Hopefully I’ll get to travel even more in the future. I would love to see Prague, Budapest and explore other places outside of Europe. Where do you think I should go next? 36. Today, most records of biodiversity are often in the form of photos, videos, and other digital records. Though they are useful for detecting shifts in the number and variety of species in an area, a new Stanford study has found that this type of record is not perfect. “With the rise of technology it is easy for people to make observations of different species with the aid of a mobile application,” said Barnabas Daru, who is lead author of the study and assistant professor of biology in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. “These observations now outnumber the primary data that comes from physical specimens (标本), and since we are increasingly using observational data to investigate how species are responding to global change, I wanted to know: Are they usable?” Using a global dataset of 1.9 billion records of plants, insects, birds, and animals, Daru and his team tested how well these data represent actual global biodiversity patterns. “We were particularly interested in exploring the aspects of sampling that tend to bias (使有偏差) data, like the greater likelihood of a citizen scientist to take a picture of a flowering plant instead of the grass right next to it,” said Daru. Their study revealed that the large number of observation-only records did not lead to better global coverage. Moreover, these data are biased and favor certain regions, time periods, and species. This makes sense because the people who get observational biodiversity data on mobile devices are often citizen scientists recording their encounters with species in areas nearby. These data are also biased toward certain species with attractive or eye-catching features. What can we do with the imperfect datasets of biodiversity? “Quite a lot,” Daru explained. “Biodiversity apps can use our study results to inform users of oversampled areas and lead them to places — and even species — that are not well-sampled. To improve the quality of observational data, biodiversity apps can also encourage users to have an expert confirm the identification of their uploaded image.” 43. What do we know about the records of species collected now? A. They are becoming outdated. B. They are mostly in electronic form. C. They are limited in number. D. They are used for public exhibition. 44. What does Daru’s study focus on? A. Threatened species. B. Physical specimens. C. Observational data. D. Mobile applications. 45. What has led to the biases according to the study? A. Mistakes in data analysis. B. Poor quality of uploaded pictures. C. Improper way of sampling. D. Unreliable data collection devices. 46. What is Daru’s suggestion for biodiversity apps? A. Review data from certain areas. B. Hire experts to check the records. C. Confirm the identity of the users. D. Give guidance to citizen scientists. 【答案】43. B 44. C 45. C 46. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了斯坦福大学的一项研究发现,数字生物多样性记录存在偏见,建议应用程序引导公民科学家获取更好的数据。 【43题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“Today, most records of biodiversity are often in the form of photos, videos, and other digital records. Trending City Walks Bring People Closer to Real Vibe of Life Recently, the “city walk” trend has been gaining steam among residents and tourists around China. On trend bible Xiaohongshu, data shows that the number of city walk-related topic posts has increased by 700 percent over the past three months, and the total number of interactions has increased by more than 600 percent. A city walk is a form of urban tourism originating in the UK. For the latter two, they may spend weekends gaining a deeper understanding of their place of residence, reconnecting with that which they are familiar. Seasoned city walkers share their recommended routes and snack spots on social media and quickly rack up thousands of fans. Districts and streets with a great historical or cultural atmosphere in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu have become popular city walk routes. Oscar Wilde once said, “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” ____49____ Last, city walkers are a cast of people who possess intense curiosity. They are keen to connect with the city in which they are stopping or reside in their own way. By “roaming” on foot, city walkers are better able to feel the texture and listen to the breath of a place. ____50____ For example, in Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality, if you don’t take a walk, you can hardly experience the unique geographical charm of the mountainous city. Be it the hutong in Beijing or the Chinese parasol tree district in Shanghai; city walks allow people to see the scenery apart from the scene and uncover hidden knowledge. A. The streets and buildings may stay the same, but the people they meet change. B. They seek pleasure more through connection than consumption, which signifies a deep cultural curiosity. C. City walkers may be tourists from afar or migrant workers and locals. D. However, the tourist industry may misuse it as a profitable symbol and decrease its creativity and uniqueness. E. However, don’t do it just because it’s good for you, do it because it’s fun. F. City walks are becoming increasingly accepted and acknowledged by more and more people. 【答案】47. C 48. A 49. E 50. Large tech companies have long been aware of the stress their call center operators are exposed to every single day, ____2____ many customers taking out their anger and frustrations on them. Some of them have even introduced stress management programs ____3____ include relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, or therapy meant to irritability and anxiety. However, one Japanese company may have come up with a much ____4____ (efficient) solution-using AI to completely take screaming and aggressive speech out of the equation. The best part of the visit was without a doubt, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by the great Michelangelo. 36. (C) In the race to document the species on Earth before they go extinct, researchers and citizen scientists have collected billions of records. “Quite a lot” Daru explained. A Threatened species. Section C Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Trending City Walks Bring People Closer to Real Vibe of Life Recently, the “city walk” trend has been gaining steam among residents and tourists around China.
