Does Group Chat Make You Feel Bad?
I’m in a meeting when my phone starts to flash with notices and messages constantly stream in. While the meeting is important, I’m distracted and eager to pick up the phone. Is it a new job announcement from a friend? Has something terrible happened? My anxiety is ____16____ as new messages mount, and I’m praying this meeting ends sooner.
This is a typical emotional change of being a modern group chat member, and I’m not alone. Starting as a new ____17____ for long-distance connection with multiple friends, group chats have become the common way we stay in touch. According to a recent research project, an average adult in Britain is part of 83 group chats — a(n) ____18____ situation highlighting how over connected people are. But why exactly do they cause such negative emotions?
“When I see tons of messages coming through, I get stressed that I may lose track of ____19____ if I don’t check them from time to time. Or I worry I’ve said something wrong,” says one interviewee, “Not joining in a group chat may in some way ____20____ our pressure, because then you’ll get loads to catch up on.”
There’s a lack of real connection too. “Group chats can make us feel surrounded, yet still somehow on the outside,” says Abby Rawlinson, a psychologist. “If you know everyone’s chatting and you’re not part of the flow, it arouses the ache of ____21____.”
However, the darker side of a group chat occurs when things go from lighthearted jokes to ____22____ harmless comments causing the wildfire of negativity. “FOMO [fear of missing out] in group chats is real,” says another interviewee, “If you’re added to a smaller group chat without a certain friend, that implies the friend has been ____23____ for a certain reason. No one in the new chat group intends to hurt others but somehow, gossip about that friend later appears, indicating that leaving group chats equals the ____24____ of being talked about behind your back.”
“The emotional politics of a group chat are the dynamics that shape how seen, ____25____ or valued we feel,” says Rawlinson, “Over time, these patterns start to mirror real-life social system and cause misunderstanding.”
【答案】16. C 17. F
18. J 19. K
20. A 21. D

Section B 22’
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read.
(A)
I was sitting in my high school classroom, nervously tapping my pencil against the desk as I awaited the start of the English exam.
As the clock struck, signaling the beginning of the exam, my heart began to race. I opened the exam booklet and scanned the questions, and I felt a wave of panic over me. The questions seemed foreign, and the topics unfamiliar. In a state of panic, I hurriedly wrote down my answers, hoping that somehow, by some stroke of luck, they would be correct. But as the minutes went by, I realized I couldn’t seem to make sense of the questions before me. As the final bell rang, I handed in my paper with a heavy heart.
In the days that followed, I couldn’t shake the feeling of failure that hung over me like a dark cloud. I replayed the exam over and over in my mind, analyzing every question, every answer, searching for clues as to where I had gone wrong.
But in the depression, a realization began to dawn on me — I had failed, yes, but I had also learned valuable lessons along the way. Armed with this newfound wisdom, I ensured that I would do better next time. I threw myself into my studies with renewed determination, devouring books and practicing past exams with an eagerness I had never known before.
When the time came to retake the exam, I was ready. I approached each question with confidence and clarity, drawing upon the lessons I had learned from my previous missteps.
When the results were announced, I held my breath as I scanned the list of names. And there it was — my name, shining brightly among the list of successful candidates. At that moment, all the hard work, all the late nights and early mornings, were worth it.

We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem? It’s possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.
Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease(润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.
48. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A. Addiction to smartphones.
B. Inappropriate behaviours in public places.
C. Absence of communication between strangers.
D. Impatience with slow service.
49. What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci?
A. Showing good manners. B. Relating to other people.
C. Focusing on a topic. D. Making business deals.
50. What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk?
A. It improves family relationships. B. It raises people’s confidence.
C. It matters as much as a formal talk. D. It makes people feel good.
51. What is the best title for the text?
A. Conversation Counts B. Ways of Making Small Talk
C. Benefits of Small Talk D. Uncomfortable Silence
【答案】48. C 49. B 50. D 51. C

How Can I Fight Laziness?
Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
____52____. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. ____53____.
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations (诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. ____54____. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. ____55____. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A. To fight family laziness, set an example.
B. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
C. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
D. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
E. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.
F. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.

Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.(很多人长期睡眠不足,因为他们熬夜太晚,又早起准备工作。这些人一旦到家就没什么动力。懒惰与缺乏动力和拖延倾向密切相关。通过调整作息,多获得几个小时的有效休息,你就能一整天都对抗懒惰。)”围绕“睡眠不足导致懒惰”及“调整作息克服懒惰”展开;结合下文“Another way...”“Some people fight laziness by...”

上文“Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑)that surround them. 【55题详解】
上文“Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately.(懒惰在家里也可能是一个长期存在的问题。夫妻和孩子的精力水平可能各不相同,但如果不立即处理,懒惰可能会蔓延。)”指出“家庭中的懒惰问题”及危害;下文“Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal.

After 20 years of teaching, I thought I’d heard every argument in books from students who wanted a better grade. But recently, multiple students had a new ____26____: “My grade doesn’t reflect the effort I put into this course.”
In the past, students understood that hard work was not ____27____; an A demanded great work. Yet today, many students expect to be rewarded for the ____28____ of their effort rather than the quality of their knowledge. In a recent survey, ____29____, two-thirds of college students say that “trying hard” should be a factor in their grades, and a third think they should get at least a B just for showing up at (most) classes.
The Gen Z are not at fault. It’s the result of a ____30____ about one of the most popular educational theories.
More than a generation ago, the psychologist Carol Dweck found praising kids for their abilities weakened their flexibility and led to a (n) ____31____ mindset, making them more likely to get discouraged or give up when they encountered setbacks. However, a shift in praise from intelligence to effort could cultivate a developed mindset and ____32____ learning. The idea of celebrating persistence quickly made its way into widely-shared articles, ____33____ books and popular TED talks.
The problem is that we’ve taken this practice too far. We’ve gone from ____34____ effort to treating it as an end-in itself. We’ve failed to remind a generation of kids that working hard doesn’t guarantee doing a good job, ____35____ being a good person. What worries me most is that it can motivate people to ____36____ bad strategies instead of developing better ones. A textbook example is burning the midnight oil rather than spacing out their studying over a few days.
Teachers and parents ____37____ kids a more balanced message. We award Olympic medals to the athletes who swim the fastest, not the ones who train the hardest for good reasons. The ideal response to a disappointing grade is not to complain but to ask how you could have gotten a better return on your ____38____. A’s are not granted for effort itself; they’re ____39____ through mastery of the material. The true measure of learning is not the time and energy you put in.
And as I look back on that sunny afternoon in the high school classroom, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me, and the person it helped me become.
