One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he threw the ball at his mother’s favourite vase on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together discreetly and put the vase back to its place.
The mother soon noticed what had happened. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It ran around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, because all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea. Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he decided to keep the lie no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one. The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” The son was surprised. But before he could say anything, the mother continued, “This chocolate is a reward for your ability to repair the vase. Well done!” The mother made no mention of her son’s mistake, giving only encouragement and praise for what he did.
After the incident, life at home was the same as before. The only change was that the boy never lied again. Whenever he thought of lying, the chocolates would flash before him at once.
34. What does the underlined word “discreetly” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

D. Because all the windows were opened at that time.
36. How did the mother correct Ben’s mistake?
A. By making chocolate flash in front of him.
B. By rewarding instead of blaming or punishment.
C. By buying a new vase.
D. By making no mention of her son’s mistake only.
37. What do you think of the mother?

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (Don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other programs on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes”, but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, depending on features. The U. S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace (更换) the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
38. Which statement about the Kolibree toothbrush is TRUE?
A. It can send information to your phone. B. It can clean teeth all by itself.
C. It looks like a dentist. D. It can talk with us.
39. Why did Serval decide to invent the toothbrush?
A. Because he could score points in games while brushing teeth.
B. Because he wanted to make sure his children could brush teeth well.
C. Because he wanted to replace the brush on the handle with a new one.
D. Because he wanted to invent an electric toothbrush for the market.
40. What can we know from the passage?
A. Only parents care about children’s teeth health.
B. The Kolibree toothbrush has a fixed price.
C. The toothbrush with a camera is already on the market.
D. The inventor is confident about the future of his product.
41. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Children do not brush teeth right.
B. A new toothbrush is able to control games.
C. People are paying more and more attention to teeth health.
D. Serval’s invention wil be able to check the user’s teeth.

Lisa has been to Antarctica (南极洲). Here is what she wrote about the trip.
Tuesday December 2
We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We would stay there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.
We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather.
It turned clear at 9: 30 and we took off at 10: 30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn't be able to fly.
Wednesday December 3
After waking up in Antarctica for the first time, I can understand why everybody who comes here loves the place. It is really beautiful.
We are staying at Rothera Survey Base with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2℃ today. It is very cold, but the regulars (正式队员) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts.
Thursday December 4
I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here. It’s a bit colder today, about minus 5 °C, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we are allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.
Saturday December 6
Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).
The most wonderful thing about this place is how the scenery changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there every day.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving-slowly and thankfully.
42. Lisa had a nervous wait in Stanley because of ________.
A. strong winds B. thick clouds C. mountains of ice D. low temperature
43. What impressed Lisa most about Antarctica?
A. People walked around in T-shirt. B. It was a beautiful and quiet place.
C. The weather was sometimes warm. D. The scenery changes every day.
44. What does the underlined phrase “go off” mean?
A. Reach. B. Leave. C. Increase. D. Expand.
45. The writing is most probably from Lisa’s ________.
A. notebook B. diary C. homework D. story book

A. Reach. B. Leave. C. Increase. D. Expand.
45. The writing is most probably from Lisa’s ________.
