Dear Emily,
I hope this email finds you in good spirits.I’m writing to invite you to collaborate with me on our school's required research project for this term. We are considering the topic "The Impact of Social Media on Youth Communication Skills," which I believe is highly relevant in today's digital age and could provide insights into how our generation interacts.
Our plan is to conduct a series of interviews with students, analyze their communication patterns on various social platforms, and compare these findings with traditional communication methods. We aim to present our findings in a comprehensive report, highlighting both the positive and negative effects.
Given your background and interest in social dynamics, I think your input would be incredibly valuable. Let me know your idea when we can start brainstorming together.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Then Miss Beth walked into our classroom for our English period. She noticed that Pei was missing. “Where’s Pei?” Miss Beth asked. “We don’t know,” answered the whole class. Suddenly, our class monitor stood up and told Miss Beth about the incident that happened earlier. I could see that Miss Beth was upset. She asked me to meet her at the staffroom before going home. “I am in boiling water,” I said to Cherry. “Don’t worry. Everything will be fine”, Cherry told me.
After school, I went to the staffroom to meet Miss Beth. “Miss Beth, did you want to meet me?” I asked politely. “Yes, but can we go out?” she replied. “Sure,” I said. After we went out, I saw Cherry, Harry, and most surprisingly Pei. I was too shocked to speak. Then, Cherry explained and told me that this was an April fool trick. I was relieved after finding out that Pei wasn’t actually missing. Well, my own trick blew up in my face. But this experience made me feel closer to my friends as well as my teacher.

“Anita Bhagwandas is really ugly.” This was a comment that had been left on an online forum 10 years ago in reaction to a picture of me alongside my colleagues. “Trolls will be trolls,“ friends comforted me when I told them about it. They told me that I should forget all about those words. But I couldn’t let “ugly” go.
I’ve had a complex relationship with that word my whole life. Growing up in Wales during the 1990s and 2000s as a plus-sized, dark-skinned Indian girl, I wanted to look like anyone other than myself.
This discomfort followed me from my teens all the way up to my university and adult life--an imaginary friend was always there to remind me of my lowly place in the world. Overtime, it developed into an obsession with thinness and all that it promised: prettiness, acceptance, success. I, like many others, have been on and off some type of diet throughout my life. It feels like a never-ending game of chess, using protein bars and fried chicken as pieces.
To say that trying to navigate this internal concept of “ugly” shaped my life would be an understatement. It affected everything, including my career: I became a beauty editor. I was driven by the knowledge that the industry needed to be more inclusive.
Working on the inside of the beauty industry, I started to notice some changes.
Around 2010, social media gave people a voice and more control over what magazines and brands were creating for them. Now, consumers were increasingly being told to “love the skin you’re in” or to feel like you’re “worth it.”
I finally found some comfort--but it wasn’t because of the popular slogan “love
yourself as you are.” That never worked for me because it didn’t go deep enough. But when I started to read about how beauty standards were created who created them and who was holding the puppet strings that are making so many of us feel ugly, things started to gradually change.
I developed some self-protective methods to counter the wrongness of the beauty standards I’d been sold my entire life. Today, I still buy beauty products, but I do so because I love their smells, their designs and their textures, so purchasing beauty products has become much of a pleasurable experience for me. It makes a big difference to your mindset when you are using beauty products for joy, rather than to look prettier, thinner and younger.
Am I fixed? Do I walk around giving myself high fives in wing mirrors and windows? No. But I do feel so much more at peace with my appearance.
I’ve come to learn how important it is for me to root my self-worth in the qualities that really define me--my character and positive traits. Once I had done so, I started to realize that ugly is an ever-changing concept--and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is never to trust those binary(二元对立的)categories. “Pretty” and “ugly” don’t actually exist.

A. just laughed it off B. was really astonished about it

B. The author has been following a very strict diet plan.
C. The author finds it beyond her intelligence to make herself a diet plan.

26. We can learn from the article that the author became a beauty editor because________.

Sometimes, you seem to hear a conversation between two familiar voices, or the lyrics to a beloved song. It’s alarming because, as far as you know, you’re alone, and there’s no music playing either. The only noise in the room is the uneven vibration of a fan or the sound of water rushing from your shower head.
Disconcerting as this may be, don’t worry. You’re probably experiencing audio pareidolia, a strange but common experience that happens when you perceive words from a random noise. While it feels somewhat like a hallucination (幻觉), hearing and psychology experts assure us that it’s not. Instances of audio pareidolia are different from hallucinations in that you’re mishearing actual sounds in unusual ways.
“When you’re born, your brain is basically a sheet of blank paper. But your brain is always looking for patterns, whether they’re visual, auditory, or anything else,” says Neil Bauman, the founder of the Center for Hearing Loss Help. The brain’s desire to find patterns it can recognize from random information is why pareidolia occurs in every sensory system. It’s why you see faces in the clouds overhead or feel something crawling on the surface of your skin even though nothing’s there. On a physiological level, your brain, which tries really hard to find meaning in all the sensory input it receives, goes digging into its archives (档案) to give meaning to an unstable mess of noise. What you end up hearing is your brain’s rationalization (合理化) of the background sound. “You don’t hear what your ears hear, but you hear what your brain perceives you to hear,” says Bauman. “Sometimes that’s a bit far off from what the actual noise is. Your brain is very good at finding patterns and adding significance to random input. That’s why you understand that loud noises are a sign that you might be in a dangerous situation—an evolutionary advantage.”
“These patterns in question are ‘fuzzy’ in the first place, not ‘sharp’,” says Bauman of the deceptive background noise. “If the pattern was sharp, your brain would get a perfect match, and you’d hear the sound as a fan or motor sound. It’s the fuzziness of the sound that results in so much ambiguity.”
28.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By explaining a concept. B.By describing some common experiences.
C.By showing some previous similar research. D.By quoting the words of some experts.
29.What might be the cause of audio pareidolia?
A.The sounds cause hearers’ inward panic.
B.The sounds are too low to be clearly recognized.
C.The hearers have difficulty recognizing mixed sounds.
D.The brain mismatches the sounds with the patterns in its database.
30.What does Neil Bauman think of audio pareidolia?
A.Alarming. B.Outstanding. C.Useful. D.Temporary.
31.What does the underlined word “fuzzy” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Unclear. B.Logical. C.Mature. D.Dynamic.

Mom always said, “Choose your friends wisely.” Now a study led by a Rutgers Health professor shows she was onto something: Their personality traits can affect you—especially ones that are in their genes.
The genetic make-up of adolescent peers may have long-term consequences for individual risk of drug and alcohol use disorders, depression and anxiety, the groundbreaking study has found. “What our data illustrates is the long reach of social genetic effects,” said Jessica E. Salvatore, an associate professor of psychiatry at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and lead author of the study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Socio-genomics—the influence of one person’s genotype on the observable traits of another—is an emerging field of genomics. Previous research suggested that peers’ genetic make-up might influence health outcomes of their friends. To test this, Salvatore and her colleagues used Swedish national data to assess peer social genetic effects for several mental disorders.
With an anonymized (匿名的) database of more than 1.5 million individuals born in Sweden between 1980 and 1998 to Swedish-born parents, the first step was to map individuals by location and by school during their teenage years. The researchers then used medical, pharmacy and legal registries documenting substance use and mental health disorders for the same individuals in adulthood.
Having controlled factors such as the target individuals’ own genetic tendencies and family socio-economic factors, the researchers still found a clear association between peers’ genetic tendencies and target individuals’ likelihood of developing a substance use or mental disorder. The impacts were stronger among school-based peers than geographically defined peers.
Salvatore said more research is needed to understand why these connections exist. But what is clear, she said, is that the findings count for interventions. “If we want to think about how to best address these socially costly disorders, we need to think more about network-based and social interventions,” she said.
This research also underlines the importance of disrupting processes and risks that extend for at least a decade after attendance in school, Salvatore added. “Peer genetic influences have a very long reach,” she said.
32.What does the data of Salvatore’s research show?
A.You should listen to your parent’s advice.
B.Peers are to blame for your mental diseases.
C.Peers’ make-up is the most influential factor.
D.Peers’ personality will affect you in the long run.
33.Why did Salvatore and her colleagues conduct the research?
A.They were concerned with health outcomes of adolescents.
B.They accessed an anonymized database of peers’ influence.
C.They worried about severe cases of peers’ mental disorders.
D.They intended to check former research on socio-genomics.
34.What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A.Target individuals were easily affected in the school.
B.Family socio-economic factors made for the findings.
C.Genetic make-up had nothing to do with mental disorder.
D.Target individuals were unlikely to suffer substance uses.
35.What is Salvatore’s suggestion on interventions?
A.Letting go of social genetic effects after 10 years.
B.Digging into why school-based connections exist.
C.Persisting in the removal of the negative influence.
D.Highlighting the risks that would extend for a long time.

College admissions experts offer tips on how to write a college essay. For college applicants, the essay is the place to showcase their writing skills and let their unique voice shine through. 36
Getting Started on the College Essay
A good time for students to begin working on their essays is the summer before senior year, when homework and extracurricular activities aren’t taking up time and energy. 37 Students can go online to review essay requirements, such as word limits and essay topics. Many students may start with the Common App, an application platform accepted by more than 1,000 schools.
How Long Should a College Essay Be?
38 “While we won’t stop reading after 650 words, we cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention for as long as you’d hoped,” the Common App states.
39
The most discouraging step in the essay writing process is figuring out what to write about. There are several topics to choose. The essay isn’t a complete autobiography. It’s overwhelming to think of putting your whole life in one essay. Rather, students should narrow their focus and write about a specific experience or hobby that reveals something personal, like how they think, what they value or what their strengths are. Students can also write about something that illustrates an aspect of their background. 40 What’s most important is that a college essay is thoughtful and tells a story that offers insight into who a student is as a person.
A.How to Write a College Essay.
B.How to Pick a College Essay Topic.
C.The following are tips on writing a college essay.
D.You should show your respect to the college teachers.
E.These are the types of essays that stand out to admissions officers.
F.Starting early will give students plenty of time to work through the essay before deadlines.
G.Though the Common App notes there are no strict word limit for an essay, it suggests no more than 650 words.

Scientists studying the effects of the gardening found that participating in the activity twice a week can improve mental health. A team from the University of Florida studied 32 women 56 the ages of 26 and 49 who did not have any ongoing medical 57 (condition). None of the women had gardened before.
The researchers divided the women into two groups. One group participated in gardening, 58 the other group took art classes. Both groups took part in their assigned sessions twice a week for four weeks.
During the gardening sessions, 59 women performed tasks such as planting seeds, moving plants to new pots, and tasting edible (可吃的) plants. After each session, participants answered questions 60 (measure) their anxiety, depression, and mood levels. They also had their blood pressure and heart rate 61 (monitor).
While both groups experienced improved mental health, the group who gardened benefited 62 (slight) more, reporting less stress, anxiety, and depression. The research team hopes to learn more about how gardening and mental health 63 (connect).
In the meantime, many women who participated in the study 64 (continue) to benefit. “At the end of the experiment, many of the participants were saying not just how much they enjoyed the sessions but also how they planned 65 (keep) gardening,” said Charles Guy, one of the study’s lead scientists.

A Memorable April Fool’s Day
I really like to trick people, especially my friends, Cherry and Harry. But after one particular day, when a st range incident happened, it changed. I learned a lot on that day.
What is the awful incident? Well, it all started when Miss Beth introduced us to a new exchange student, Pei. “She is very tall,” I said to Cherry. “Speaking of heights, wouldn’t she be perfect in the cheerleading team?” Cherry asked. “Maybe... Well, we’d better keep quiet. Miss Beth is looking at us,” I said.
Surprisingly, I was assigned to guide the new girl around. During the break, I wanted to start a conversation with Pei, so I quickly approached her. “Hey, Pei,” I said. “Hello,” she replied politely. I had a short chat with her and she seemed to be a nice person. Before going home, I showed Pei around.
The next day, I was very excited because it was April Fool’s Day. I planned to trick my friends with Pei since she was new. I really hoped that she would cooperate with me. So, I quickly ran to her before our English period started.
Unfortunately, Matt, a naughty schoolboy came to our classroom, realising that there wasn’t any teacher in. “Go away!” I shouted. As usual, he ignored that. I took Pei’s notebook and hit Matt until it fell on the floor. Well... it wasn’t actually a notebook. It was Pei’s diary. “Ooh, it’s a diary!” shouted Matt. Then, he started to read out Pei’s diary loudly. “I really think Mal is bossy and…” Matt kept reading all of Pei’s inner thoughts.
I could see that Pei was embarrassed. She grabbed her diary from Matt and ran outside the classroom. I was quite upset, and had a bad feeling about the whole thing. After a while, I jumped out of seat to follow her just to say sorry. However, I couldn’t find her anywhere before the school bell rang, I had to walk back to the classroom.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then Miss Beth walked into our classroom for our English period.

24. When the author was called ugly by strangers online, she________.
A. just laughed it off B. was really astonished about it
C. tried to pay no attention to it D. felt as uncomfortable as she had as a child
25. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 imply?
A. The author’s diet is unhealthy and unbalanced.
B. The author has been following a very strict diet plan.
C. The author finds it beyond her intelligence to make herself a diet plan.
D. The author has long battled between eating fattening foods and struggling to lose weight.
26. We can learn from the article that the author became a beauty editor because________.
A. she wanted to fulfill her childhood dream
B. she aspired to broaden the public perception
C. she wished to explore the true standards of beauty herself
D. she hoped to prove herself to those who looked down upon her
27. The author’s perception of herself improved significantly________.
A. after having worked in the beauty industry
B. when she learnt about the secrets behind beauty standards
C. when she defined her self-worth based on her good qualities
D. after having been inspired by the slogan “love yourself as you are.”
【答案】24. D 25. D 26. B 27. C
根据文章第二段“I’ve had a complex relationship with that word my whole life. Growing up in Wales during the 1990s and 2000s as a plus-sized, dark-skinned Indian girl, I wanted to look like anyone other than myself.( 我对那个词有着复杂的情感。在20世纪90年代和21世纪初,我成长于威尔士,作为一个体型偏大、肤色较深的印度女孩,我希望自己的外貌能与现在的自己完全不同)”以及“But I couldn’t let “ugly” go(但我无法摆脱“丑陋”这个词)”可知,作者小时候就对自己的外貌不满意,被人说丑后,她感觉就像小时候一样不舒服。故选D项。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段中“Overtime, it developed into an obsession with thinness and all that it promised: prettiness, acceptance, success. I, like many others, have been on and off some type of diet throughout my life (随着时间的推移,这已经演变成了一种对苗条身材的痴迷,以及它所承诺的一切:美丽、接受和成功。我像许多人一样,一生中断断续续地尝试过各种减肥方法)”可知作者痴迷苗条身材以及它所承诺的一切:美丽、接受和成功,像许多人一样,一生中断断续续地尝试过各种减肥方法,可推理出作者一直在吃增肥食物和努力减肥之间挣扎。故选 D 项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“I became a beauty editor. I was driven by the knowledge that the industry needed to be more inclusive(我成为了一名美容编辑。我之所以这样做,是因为我知道这个行业需要更多的包容性)”可知作者成为了一名美容编辑是因为作者知道这个行业需要更多的包容性,可推理出作者成为美容编辑是因为她渴望拓宽公众对美的认知,使美容行业更加包容。故选 B 项。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“I’ve come to learn how important it is for me to root my self-worth in the qualities that really define me—my character and positive traits. Once I had done so, I started to realize that ugly is an ever-changing concept—and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is never to trust those binary (二元对立的) categories(我了解到,将自我价值建立在真正定义我的特质上——我的性格和积极特质是多么重要。一旦我做到了这一点,我开始意识到“丑陋”是一个不断变化的概念——我学到的最重要的一课是永远不要相信那些二元对立的分类)” 可知,当作者根据自己的良好品质来定义自我价值时,她对自己的认知有了显著提高。故选 C 项。
C
A.Unclear. B.Logical. C.Mature. D.Dynamic.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.C 31.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是声音幻想性错觉这一现象及其形成的原因。
28.推理判断题。根据首段“Sometimes, you seem to hear a conversation between two familiar voices, or the lyrics to a beloved song. It’s alarming because, as far as you know, you’re alone, and there’s no music playing either. The only noise in the room is the uneven vibration of a fan or the sound of water rushing from your shower head.(有时,你似乎听到两个熟悉的声音之间的对话,或一首心爱的歌曲的歌词。这很令人担忧,因为据你所知,你是一个人,而且也没有音乐播放。房间里唯一的噪音是风扇不均匀的振动声或淋浴喷头哗哗的水流声)”可知,首段介绍的是生活中出现的某种现象。由此推知,本文是通过描述人们生活中常见的一些经历引出本文的话题的。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The brain’s desire to find patterns it can recognize from random information is why pareidolia occurs in every sensory system.(大脑渴望从随机信息中找到它可以识别的模式,这就是为什么空想性视错觉在每个感觉系统中都会发生)”以及下文的“On a physiological level, your brain, which tries really hard to find meaning in all the sensory input it receives, goes digging into its archives (档案) to give meaning to an unstable mess of noise. What you end up hearing is your brain’s rationalization (合理化) of the background sound.(在生理层面上,你的大脑非常努力地从它接收到的所有感官输入中寻找意义,它会深入挖掘它的档案,为一堆不稳定的噪音赋予意义。你最终听到的是你的大脑对背景声音的合理化)”可知,大脑天生倾向于从随机信息中寻找模式,并赋予其意义,当接收到模糊的声音时,大脑会试图从其档案中寻找匹配的模式,从而将噪音合理化为我们认为听到的声音。由此可知,声音幻想性错觉的原因是大脑将声音与数据库中的模式不当匹配。故选D项
30.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“That’s why you understand that loud noises are a sign that you might be in a dangerous situation — an evolutionary advantage.(这就是为什么你明白,大声的噪音是你可能处于危险境地的信号——这是一种进化优势)”可知,Neil Bauman认为声音幻想性错觉是一种进化优势。由此推知,Neil Bauman认为声音幻想性错觉对人们是有利的。故选C项。
31.词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在的句子““These patterns in question are ‘fuzzy’ in the first place, not ‘sharp’,” says Bauman of the deceptive background noise.(“这些有问题的模式首先是‘fuzzy’ ,而不是‘清晰的’,”鲍曼在谈到具有欺骗性的背景噪音时说)”可知,划线单词的意思应与sharp意义相反,sharp为形容词,意为“清晰的”,由此可知,划线单词的意思应为“模糊的”。故选A项。

【答案】32.D 33.D 34.A 35.C

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then Miss Beth walked into our classroom for our English period.

After school, I went to the staffroom to meet Miss Beth.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then Miss Beth walked into our classroom for our English period.
