Background information: What is a dodo?

As dead as a dodo
1 Are you looking at me? Do you know me? I'm a dodo! You may think I'm just a character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Actually, there used to be thousands of us-for real. But now you can only see us in museums.
Because most readers now can only see a dodo in books, films or museums.
1.Where is the dodo now?
2.Why is the dodo “just a character” to some readers?(可讨论)
Paragraph 1:
In museums
2 We lived on an island in the Indian Ocean. In the happy old days, there was plenty of (充足的)food to eat. All the other animals were friendly(有好的). What a peaceful(宁静的,平静的) and safe life!
3 However, in 1598, humans arrived. They cut down the trees and our lovely forest was gone. They hunted us because we were slow and couldn't fly. What's more, their pigs, cats and dogs ate our eggs. As a result, we soon died out.
3.What was the dodo like before the humans arrived? (friendly, peaceful, safe)
4.What happened after the humans arrived? Why did dodos die out?
no trees-----no place to live
no eggs------no future generation
no lives----- the dodo population falls
Para. 2.&3
Complete the display board ,then try retelling the sad story of dodos in pairs.
4 So today we are standing in museums around the world. When you see us, please remember our sad story. The world is full of fantastic animals. Please try your best to help them. Make them as happy as a clam, not as dead as a dodo.
Para. 4
1.How do you feel after reading the sad story of dodos? If you were the dodo, please make an appeal for it.
2.What is the meaning of “as happy as a clam” and “ as dead as a dodo”?
Why does the writer use the two expressions at the end of the passage?

2.How do people’s action influence animals? Give an example.
Many animal species have been lost due to the human role in habitat loss, environmental pollution, climate change, over-fishing, and over-hunting. Indeed, human activities have made the extinction of many animals take place long before the nature should have taken its course.
What can you learn from the story?
What should we do for the animals?
Summary
