Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st—January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟酒) at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh (重新). Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year's Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck in the New Year. A new study has shown how the color of a bowl can influence the taste of the food it holds.
Although it is hard to say what a picky eater (挑食的人) is like, the type may include people who have a limited diet, who have strong likes or dislikes for certain food, who require food to be prepared in a special way, who aren't willing to accept new food, or who show signs of all these features.
According to this new study, food was put into two groups in red, blue, or white bowls. While the color made no difference in taste for non-picky eaters, the picky. eaters reported changes in their taste senses-based-on-the color of the bowl being used. Snacks in red and blue bowls were thought to have more salt than those in white bowls, while snacks in red bowls were less pleasant than those in the other bowls.
"This knowledge can be useful for those who want to try more kinds of foods," says Lorenzo Stafford, a psychologist from the University of Portsmouth in the UK. "For example, if you want to encourage a picky eater to try some bitter (苦的) vegetables, you can try to put them on a pink plate or in a yellow bowl, because this can give him or her a sweet feeling."
At first it may seem strange that a bowl color can influence the taste-of food, but the research before has shown how light and music can influence eating habits. All of our senses are connected, including taste.
"This new study can help in treating food neophobia--the unwillingness to try new food, "the team of the study says, and further studies will be required to find out more relationships between colors and foods.
"Through further studies, maybe we can decide ways to help actively influence a person's diet, and as a result, their health in mind and body." says Stafford.
1.According to the passage, who is a picky eater?
Tom especially likes hamburgers. Lucy is able to accept new food happily.
Sigmund usually has three meals a day. Mary doesn't care how vegetables are cooked.
A.Tom. B.Lucy. C.Mary. D.Sigmund
2.According to the new study, which of the following is true?
A.All the colors made no difference in taste to picky eaters.
B.Snacks in red bowls seem to be saltier than those in blue bowls
C.Snacks in red bowls seem less pleasant than those in white bowls.
D.Putting sweet vegetables on a pink plate may give a bitter feeling.
3.Why can a bowl color influence the taste of food?
A.Because people have their own eating habits.
B.Because people like colourful bowls.

When I was a kid, a tree grew in front of my home. At the age of 10, I was just tall enough to reach its lowest branch and lift myself into its embrace. I wasn't the only climber. Sometimes two or three of my friends would join me in the sycamore, or in the maple down the street. Climbing trees allowed us to enter another world. In fact, it was a world within a world: We took our imaginations with us into those heights, which by turns were a fortress, a pirate ship, a spaceship, or a mountain castle.
In my small Maine town there are some lovely maples, lindens, and oaks. Their branches spread wide and they are strong enough for people to climb. But I have not yet seen a climber. Perhaps computer games have taken place of tree climbing, or maybe the activity went the way of monkey bars, which came to be viewed as too risky and have largely disappeared from playgrounds.
It is a sad loss. I have always believed that, since low-hanging limbs provide no benefit to the tree, they must be meant for the child. Robert Frost understood this when he wrote: When I see birches bend to left and right, across the lines of straighter darker trees, I like to think some boy's been swinging them. My only disagreement with Frost is his inference that tree climbing is a gender-specific undertaking. Both boys and girls have what it takes to make a joyful ascent.
The campus of the university where I teach is lovingly landscaped with all sorts of trees. During a recent walk, I grabbed a branch and a moment later I was sitting on it. Then the memories came flooding back: The old friends, the long view of my neighborhood, and finally, the reluctance to return to earth when the parental call to supper came.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't hear the student calling to me from below. He asked what I was doing. I didn't waste time on explanations. "Come on up, "I said. "The air's fine. "But he only laughed, and waved me off. He didn't know what he was missing.
1.What did the author and his friends get from climbing trees?
A.They were inspired to become astronauts.
B.They escaped the heavy burden (负担) of learning.
C.They became more flexible like monkeys
D.They enjoyed the world in imagination.
2.What does the author want to do in Paragraph 2?
A.Explain the reasons for kids' not climbing trees.
B.Describe the poor economy situation in Maine.
C.Expect monkey bars to be removed from playgrounds
D.Analyze the good of computer games.
3.What does Robert's poem tells us?
A.Only boys like to swing the birches.
B.The low-hanging limbs are trees' important parts.
C.The low-hanging limbs are for children to play with
D.Climbing trees can be replaced by computer games.
4.What did the author think his student missed in the last paragraph?
A.The good memories of childhood.
B.The chance to breathe fresh air.
C.The fun of climbing trees.
D.The sense of safety.
5.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Beautiful trees, unforgettable hometown
B.Beautiful trees, inspiration for poets
C.Climbing trees, the joy of childhood
D.Climbing trees, perfect way to exercise
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.C 5.C

3.细节理解题。根据It is a sad loss. Both boys and girls have what it takes to make a joyful ascent这是一个可悲的损失。
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't hear the student calling to me from below. He asked what I was doing. I didn't waste time on explanations. "Come on up, "I said. "The air's fine. 5.标题选择题。根据全文可知主要讲述了作者小时候很喜欢爬树,爬树激发了作者的想象力,但如今孩子们都去玩电脑游戏没人爬树了。作者成为老师后,某次爬上了一棵云杉树,发现自己手脚已经不灵活了,即题目可以是"爬树,童年的快乐",故选C。

Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor(味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions' great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals(化学物质) that improve your ability to fight off sickness and you have fewer chances of getting a disease.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut into an onion, irritating(刺激性的) chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions:
Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don't worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion's chemicals. Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something they are interested in. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from mistakes
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, "use it or lose it"! Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. Practice makes perfect. Good learners are also not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. You have to know how to study. Good learners find out the best ways to learn well. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. Good learners also look for ways to review what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning.

D.Putting sweet vegetables on a pink plate may give a bitter feeling.

So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears "happy tears".
