Hats or head coverings. Tapescript Host: Have you ever wondered what is the “toughest foot race on the Earth”? It is a marathon that takes place in one of the most extreme landscapes on the planet— the Sahara Desert. /səˈhɑːrə/ More than 1,000 athletes from around the world travel there each year to compete in the annual Marathon des Sables. The race covers a distance of about 250 kilometres and lasts a whole week. It consists of five competitive stages. /kəmˈpetətɪv/ A single stage can be as long as 91 kilometres. There is also a sixth stage that is just for fun and raises money for charity. The course is different every year, and runners don’t receive course maps until the day before the race begins. They also receive compasses to help them get through the desert and its rocky mountain passes, dry river beds and windy salt plains. course map路线图 mountain pass山口 com·pass /ˈkʌmpəs/ n. 罗盘;罗经;指南针;罗盘仪 rocky /ˈrɒki/ adj. 困难的;难以维持的;不稳定的;岩石的;多岩石的; river bed  河床 Page 65 As if the race itself weren’t hard enough, athletes must carry a week’s worth of supplies. More than 1,000 people take part in the race every year, and about 30% of them are women. The oldest competitor to date was 83 years old, and the youngest was 16. Prosperi came back in 1998—this time, he finished the race. off离开;偏离 guess what 想不到吧 Because of what happened to Prosperi, runners are now tracked with GPS devices in case they get lost. But it can be dangerous even if you don’t get lost: the heat and loss of water can cause serious medical conditions. Host: But there must be health care professionals there, right? 医疗保健专业人员 Jay: Yes. More than 500 staff members are at the race, including 60 doctors, nurses and emergency medical workers. Two helicopters and eight planes are also ready to fly anyone who becomes seriously ill to hospital. A3. In pairs, discuss why people participate in very challenging sporting events. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the expressions in bold/yellow. P66 A: Nowadays challenging sporting events seem to be increasingly popular among people. B: Yes. Not only are such events popular among young people, but more and more older people are also drawn to them. A: But I can’t understand why people would enjoy them. Take the marathon in the Sahara Desert for example. Think of the long distance, the desert heat, the emergencies that could occur at any time … It is so dangerous! B: I agree, but completing such a race is definitely an amazing achievement. Besides, challenges like that can also be character-building塑造性格. A: I’m not sure what you mean by “character-building”. B: Participants have to spend a lot of time training for such sporting events. During this long tiring process, they need to overcome difficulties, which in turn makes them not only physically strong but also mentally tough内心坚强. tir·ing /ˈtaɪərɪŋ/adj.  令人困倦的;使人疲劳的;累人的 , =exhausting in turn相应地;转而 B. The most important factor seems to be the popularity of a sport. First, the IOC will not consider a sport unless it has its own international association and is practised by people around the world.Second, some sports that have become less popular have been removed from the Games, such as polo, while some sports that are now popular have been included, such as tae kwon do.
