In the old days, when you had to drive to a movie theater to get some entertainment, it was easy to see how your actions could have an impact(影响)on the environment. After all, you were jumping into your car, driving across town, coughing out emissions (排放物) and using gas all the way. But now that we're used to staying at home and streaming movies, we might get a little proud. After all, we're just picking up our phones and maybe turning on the TV. You're welcome.Mother Nature.
Not so fast, says a recent report from the French-based Shift Project. According to “Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video”, digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year. Watching a half-hour show would cause 1.6 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. That's like driving 6.28 kilometers. And in the European Union, the Eureca project found that data centers (where videos are stored) there used 25% more energy in 2017 compared to just three years earlier, reports the BBC.
Streaming is only expected to increase as we become more enamored of our digital devices(设备) and the possibility of enjoying entertainment where and when we want it increases.Online video use is expected to increase by four times from 2017 to 2022 and account for 80%of all Internet traffic by 2022.By then, about 60% of the world's population will be online.
You're probably not going to give up your streaming services, but there are things you can do to help lessen the impact of your online use, experts say. For example, according to Lutz Stobbe, a researcher from the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, we have no need to upload 25 pictures of the same thing to the cloud because it consumes energy every time. If instead you delete a few things here and there, you can save energy. Moreover, it's also a good idea to
stream over Wi-Fi, watch on the smallest screen you can, and turn off your Wi-Fi in your home if you're not using your devices.
1.What topic is the first paragraph intended to lead in?
A.The environmental effects of driving private cars. B.The improvements on environmental awareness.
C.The change in the way people seek entertainment. D.The environmental impacts of streaming services.
2.What does the underlined phrase“become more enamored of”in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Get more skeptical of. B.Become more aware of.
C.Feel much crazier about. D.Get more worried about.
3.What can we infer about the use of streaming services?
A.It is being reduced to protect the planet. B.Its environmental effects are worsening.
C.It is easily available to almost everyone. D.Its side effects have drawn global attention.
4.Which of the following is the most environmentally-friendly?
A.Watching downloaded movies on a mobile phone. B.Downloading music on a personal computer.

On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the“wisdom of crowds”effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate.
This effect, capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren't always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won't cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people's estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons ,people's errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down.
But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist(转折)on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of indeperdent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals.
In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn't the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together”. Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error.
Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.
5.What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly-about?
A.The methods of estimation.
B.The underlying logic of the effect.
C.The causes of people's errors.
D.The design of Galton's experiment,
6.Navajas' study found that the average accuracy could increase even if
A.the crowds were relatively small
B.there were occasional underestimates C.individuals did not communicate
D.estimates were not fully independent
7.What did the follow-up study focus on?
A.The size of the groups. B.The dominant members.
C.The discussion process. D.The individual estimates.
8.What is the author's attitude toward Navajas' studies?
A.Unclear. B.Dismissive. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.

Choosing the Right Career
You will be leaving this school and the unavoidable question many people will ask you is,“ 1 ”Some of you may have already decided on a career path, but many of you still don't have a clue! Here are some things you might want to consider.
First, does the career you are considering have staying power? 2 Rapid technological change is disruptive(扰乱性的), and we need to be forward-looking at our future prospects. While many occupations are being taken over by new technology, jobs that require high-level of critical thinking, emotional intelligence and human interaction, remain in high demand. These jobs are not easily replaced by machines or technology. So think carefully about this before you choose your professional path.
Second, choose a career that interests you. Some people might think this is unimportant, but if you are truly passionate about your job then going to work every day won't seem a chore. 3 Before making a choice, you should examine your values, skills and personality type. This can help you decide if a career path is a good fit for you.
Third, of course you will want to consider your chosen profession's earning power. Although high pay plays a part, you should know that a job with a big salary will likely require more time to get to the top, much more effort and a higher level of stress. 4 If you have interests outside of work, or are struggling with other demands in your life, you might want to choose a less demanding line of work.
5 Let me leave you with an old saying:“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
A.You are on the right track.
B.So, what do you want to be?
C.Will it be in demand in 20 years' time?
D.It's also likely that you will stay and grow in this career.
E.They simply want you to be the best of the best to your best ability.
F.Only the truly motivated will likely to be able to meet these challenges.
G.Thinking about a life-long career at this stage in your life is surely disturbing.

There is no doubt that the most dangerous one is industrial-scale fisheries, Sea turtles get caught in nets 2 (intend) to catch other animals.
Abandoned gear( 渔具 ) also caused danger to them. Besides, climate change is causing more storms and 3 rise in sea levels, which have destroyed nesting places.
Coastal development 4 (affect) sea turtles in the past years. Pollution harms the animals and vehicles pack down beach sand, 5 makes it hard for female sea turtles to dig nests. And lights from buildings and roads confuse the baby turtles and lead them away 6 the ocean. Very few of them will make it to adulthood, so each adult turtle
is 7 (extreme)special.
Many people and 8 (organization) are working to change the situation. The World Wildlife Fund(WWF) is working with fisheries 9 (help) them switch to more friendly fishing hooks and nets. Installing LED lights inside of nets can also help catch sea turtles' attention to their 10 (exist), so the animals can swim around them.
根据第二段中“..digital technologies are responsible for 4%..cause 1.6 kilograms of carbon
Dioxide emissions,”以及第三段中的“Online video use is expected to increase...traffic by 2022.”
故选A。
1. upload v.上 传 2.delete v.删 除 3.now that 既然,因为
Moreover, it's also a good idea to stream over Wi-Fi, watch on the smallest screen you can, and turn off your Wi-Fi in your home if you're not using your devices.
it's a good idea to .

根据第二段“This effect capitalizes on the fact ...the accuracy of the estimate will go down.( 这种效应利用了这样一个事实,即当人们产生误差时,这些误 差并不总是相同的。
根据第三段中“The key finding of the study ... the average obtained from 20 independent individuals.
根据第四段中“In a follow-up study with 100 university students ...those least willing to change their minds?(在一项针对100名大学生的后续研究中,研 究人员试图更好地了解小组成员在讨论中的实际行为。
根 据 最 后 一 段“Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.(尽管Navajas 领导的研究有 局限性,仍存在许多问题,但对小组讨论和决策的潜在影响 是巨大的。)”
