At the beginning of graduate school,I knew that if I wanted to get tenure
)I had to be productive. However, when my first three papers were rejected by
major journals,a leading expert told me my projects were hopeless, and I wondered if
I should drop out.
We all get rejected at work, whether it's having our suggestions shot down or
getting fired from a job.It causes pain.Neuroscientists(神经系统科学家)have
scanned the brains of people who have cruelly been excluded from an online game.
The physiological(生理学的)response looks fairly similar to processing physical
pain.
Apparently, this was adaptive in our evolutionary past.If rejection didn't hurt, you
might have been perfectly comfortable leaving your tribe, which would not be good
for your survival. But it's left us nervous and likely to overreact to everyday rejections.
If you've ever given a presentation and felt upset by the one unfriendly face in a room
full of smiles, you know what I mean.
That's the bad news. The good news is that we can learn to accept rejection calmly
"When you're insecure in one,you rely on the other one that's doing better at that time.
Pliability(柔韧性)is the definition of strength,”said filmmaker M.Night Shyamalan..
When my work got rejected early in my academic career, pliability became my
source of strength. My identity as a researcher was under threat, but that wasn't what
had drawn me to graduate school in the first place.I had another, stronger identity:I
wanted to be a teacher. However,I hadn't had the chance:The first two years of my
program were supposed to focus entirely on research.
I realized that if I wanted to bounce back from the research rejections I had to
find a way to teach.I convinced an adviser to sign off on independent study projects
for a group of students, and I started meeting with them weekly to teach my own little
class. The conversations with the students gave rise to my first two major papers,
which gave me a head start toward tenure.
41.What was the author's reaction to the leading expert's words?
A.He took his advice.
B.He felt discouraged.
C.He paid no attention.
D.He consulted another expert
42.What have neuroscientists found out?
A.Rejection really hurts.
B.Rejection is important to survival.
C.People tend to overreact to rejection.D.Physical pain grows because of rejection.
43.What does the author advise us to do when facing rejection?
A.Find out the reasons behind it.
B.Forgive those who reject us.
C.Turn to our stronger identity.
D.Learn a lesson from past failures.
5
44.What happened to the author at last?
A.He left graduate school.
B.He turned into a middle school teacher.
C.He worked on practicing his physical pliability.
D.He accomplished some research work successfully.
45.What is the primary message of this article?
A.Rejection is a sign that one should change their career path.
B.Developing resilience and adapting to rejection can lead to personal growth
C.Rejection serves as a definitive measure of one's research capabilities.
D.Experiencing rejection can lead to a greater focus on individual achievements.

Imagine this. You need an image of a balloon for a work presentation and turn to
an Al text-to-image generator, like Midjourney or DALL-E,to create a suitable image.
You enter the prompt(提示词)“red balloon against a blue sky”but the generator
returns an image of an egg instead.
What's going on?The generator you're using may have been "poisoned".What
does this mean?Text-to-image generators work by being trained on large datasets that
include millions or billions of images. Some of the generators have been trained by-
indiscriminately scraping online images, many of which may be under copyright. This
has led to many copyright infringement (cases where artists have accused big
tech companies of stealing and profiting from their work.
This is also where the idea of "poison"comes in.Researchers who want to
empower individual artists have recently created a tool named "Nightshade"to fight
back against unauthorised image scraping. The tool works by slightly altering an
image's pixels (in a way that confuses the computer vision system but leaves the
image unaltered to a human's eyes.If an organization then scrapes one of these images
to train a future AI model, its data pool becomes "poisoned".This can result in
mistaken learning, which makes the generator return unintended results. As in our
earlier example,a balloon might become an egg.
The higher the number of"poisoned"images in the training data, the greater the
impact.Because of how generative AI works, the damage from "poisoned"images
also affects related prompt keywords.For example,if a "poisoned"image of a Picasso
work is used in training data, prompt results for masterpieces from other artists can
also be affected.
Possibly, tools like Nightshade can be abused by some users to intentionally
upload "poisoned"images in order to confuse AI generators. But the Nightshade's
developer hopes the tool will make big tech companies more respectful of copyright. It
does challenge a common belief among computer scientists that data found online can
6
be used for any purpose they see fit.
Human rights activists, for example, have been concerned for some time about
the indiscriminate use of machine vision in wider society. This concern is particularly
serious concerning facial recognition. There is a clear connection between facial
recognition cases and data poisoning,as both relate to larger questions around
technological governance. It may be better to see data poisoning as an innovative
solution to the denial of some fundamental human rights.
46.The first paragraph is used to
A.report a piece of news
B.inform an academic accident
C.arouse readers'interest
D.introduce some AI generators
47.The underlined word 'scraping'(para.2)is closest in meaning to
A.facilitating B.collecting
C.damaging
D.polishing
48.According to the passage, adding poisoned data might
A.increase the accuracy of retumed information
B.cause users to forget the prompt key words
C.interfere with the training of generative AI
D.discriminate against great masterpieces
19.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Data poisoning is somehow justified to direct attention to human rights.
B.Computer scientists have learned to respect the copyright of most artists.
C.Nightshade is being abused by human rights activists to recognize faces.
D.The issue of technological governance has aroused the lawyers'interest.
50.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Data Poisoning:Government Empowering Citizens to Protect Themselves
B.Data Poisoning:Addressing Facial Recognition Issues Among Artists
C.Data Poisoning:Risks and Rewards of Generative AI Data Training
D.Data Poisoning:Restricting Innovation or Empowering Artists
D
With child behavior, there is almost much more than it meets the eye.Because it
occurs at so many different levels, child behavior that seems simple at one level can
often be much more complex and meaningful at another.
For instance,a little child's pattern of getting into cupboards, drawers and closed
rooms, even after being told not to,is easily considered as bad behavior. When viewed
at that level, the pattern is unacceptable and could lead to punishment. But it can be
viewed at a more complex and meaningful level, namely child exploration. If a child
regularly experiences an angry parent who seems determined to prevent any
exploratory activities, the child will decide to continue to achieve future discoveries..
When parents view this behavior as born out of natural curiosity rather than simple
opposition, they are more likely to accept and appropriately monitor it.Although it
>
may lead to warning responses to ensure the child's safety,it is less likely to lead to
punishment.
There are countless other examples.Holding a goldfish outside its bowl is foolish
at one level but also can be seen as a young child's attempt to express physical
affection for a pet.Spending time with friends rather than family is selfish at one level
but also indicates a teen's need for independence.
The point here is that child behavior is often exhibited in simple forms that can
appear to be oppositional, selfish or generally unacceptable if viewed only at that basic
level. However, when viewed at a more meaningful level, the same apparently simple
behavior can be seen as something larger and potentially more adaptive. This doesn't
mean the behavior should be ignored, especially if it is inappropriate. But looking at
the bigger picture of a child's behavior, adults might gain a fuller understanding of
what they're dealing with, which can create more flexibility in how they respond.
51.According to Paragraph 1,we can know that child behavior
A.is very changeable
B.is inacceptable
C.occurs at different levels
D.is fully understood by adults
52.The example in Paragraph 2 mainly shows that
A.parents should properly punish child behavior
B.parents should keep children's safety in mind
C.children's behavior shows their interests
D.there are different attitudes to child behavior
53.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.The child will insist on doing things with determination.
B.The child will have to make frequent decisions.
C.The child will make new discoveries in the future.
D.The child will develop a strong sense of achievement.
54.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that
A.child behavior usually reflects a child's need
B.what a child does can mean differently when seen from different aspects
C.children tend to do something to show their dependence to their parents
D.children spending time with friends show their selfishness
55.What does the writer suggest parents should do with a child's behavior?
A.Have a positive attitude towards it.
B.Ignore the improper behavior.
C.View it at the basic level.
D.Watch over it from head to foot.

Behind me,I heard the rest of the crew start to mutter.I was here for the shooting

I couldn't do it.

side of me cut into my extended arms.I knew that this wonderful feeling of flight
