As a result of our sponsorship, we have a hospitality box (包厢) at all home games and employees can take advantage of this for themselves and their families. There are 20 places available every week. If you want to book some places (limited to three per employee), please contact Andrew Hudson. If there are places available on the morning of the game, you can get more than four places. I am one of them. But I’m struggling to remember which leg is which. All my life, I have suffered from left-right confusion. A soft voice suggesting I place my right foot over my left knee creates an anxiety that does not help empty my mind. I have come to Fair Oak Farm for a three-day well-being break: yoga, gentle exercise and massage (按摩) , vegetarian food and peaceful walks through the East Sussex countryside. Weeks before COVID-19 struck, the UK travel association ABTA said one in three people were planning to include wellness activities in their holiday. COVID-19 has interrupted the speed of growth, but there are signs that the market is recovering as restrictions (限制) ease. Travelling to improve one’s health is not new. For centuries people have sought the benefits of hot springs or mountain air for periods of reflection. The 21st-century wellness breaks can be eye-wateringly expensive, restricting access to people in richer countries of the developed world. But the range is enormous, with some organisations offering well-being breaks for free. Nat Segnit, author of Retreat: The Risks and Rewards of Stepping Back from the World, said he was not surprised at the growing interest. “Half the world’s population lives in urban settlements. We are penned in, if not literally by overcrowded living arrangements then by the pressure of modern existence —overwork, family demands, social media. And more broadly by the cultural and environmental problems that press in on us daily. So we might want to get away from all that. ” 4. How does the author feel in the barn at first? A. Uneasy. B. They have conflicting ideas about well-being breaks. D. They are worried about stepping back from the world. C A new study published this week in the journal Nature Communications has concluded that a 100 percent change to organic (有机的) food production in England and Wales would actually lead to a great increase in greenhouse gas emissions (排放). In turn, this would contribute to further climate change. Although organic farming directly pours out fewer emissions than conventional farming—around 20 percent lower for crops and 4 percent for farm animals—it produces notably less food. As to this study’s findings, total organic agriculture in England and Wales would produce 40 percent less food. With less food in the market, the countries would need to increase food imports, which would produce more global greenhouse gas emissions. Organic farming also increases the amount of absorbing carbon, a process where carbon dioxide (CO2) is “absorbed” out of the atmosphere and captured by plants and stored in the soil. However, even a total change to organic farming would only be equal to a tiny part of the higher emissions from overseas land use. “We predict a drop in total food production of 40 percent under a fully organic farming process, compared to conventional farming, if we keep to the same national diet,” Dr Adrian Williams, lead author and reader in Agri-Environmental Systems at Cranfield University, said in a statement. “This results from lower crop quantity, because output is limited by a lower supply of nitrogen, which is mainly from other crops or solid waste from cattle on the grassland.” Nevertheless, it is important to note that organic farming still holds some useful benefits for the environment, such as reducing exposure to chemicals and improving the varieties of creatures. In conclusion, the study suggests that organic farming will continue to play a key role in resolving the world’s environmental problems. However, it’s just one part of a much wider solution. 8. What will total organic agriculture bring to England? A. More main food. B. More species crop. C More food imports. D. More fresh oxygen. 9. How does organic farming increase the amount of absorbing carbon? A. By taking in CO2. B. By changing CO2. C. By giving off CO2. D. By producing CO2. 10. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. The ways to reduce organic farming. B. The results caused by organic farming. C. The solution to the environment problems. D. The advantages of organic farming. 11. Which of the following is the best title of the text? A. Organic farming, green food B. Organic farming, our hope in future C. Organic farming, a mistake we made D. Organic farming, a double-edged sword D With intelligent systems and new-age transit networks, life in the big cities will likely be happier and more efficient. After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. These cities will use 5G networks and the “internet of things” (IoT) to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Some cities are already using smart technology to improve the lives of residents. But what exactly does a smart city do? In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic condition as they ride. Smart cities will be interactive, allowing their residents to feel like they’re truly shaping their environment, instead of merely existing in it. “One of the most important reasons to have a smart city is that we can actually communicate with our environment in a way that we never have in the past,” said Mrinalini Ingram, head of a telecom company. “Smart cities will also allow us to save resources.” said Mrinalini Ingram.“By using sensors and 5G networks to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities as well.” Of course, it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in small ways. China, for instance, is making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure (基础设施). 12 What calls for the development of smart cities? A. The rapid progress in 5G networks. B. The marked increase in world population. C. The growing number of residents living in cities. D. The major concern over the safety of living in cities. 13 How does the author explain the way smart cities work? A. By making a contrast. B. By giving examples. C. By listing figures. D. By telling a story. 14. What can we learn from Mrinalini Ingram about smart cities? A. Air pollution will be stopped in its track. B. People will be better aware of environmental protection. C. People will be able to make the most of our environment at will. D. Resources can be saved by keeping track of how they are used. 15 What is the author’s attitude toward smart cities? A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful. Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home? ____16____ Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued (用胶水粘贴) the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place. As the mother herself dusted (擦拭) the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, Ben said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. The cat ran around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea. Before going to bed Ben found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study (书房) at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything, no matter how angry his mum became. In the study, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. Seeing her son push the door open and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him a chocolate. The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now with a lot of chocolates in hand, Ben’s bad attitude disappeared. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 潮州市高级中学2024—2025学年度第一学期高二级期中考试试卷 英语学科 本试卷适用于高二级1—20班 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2. 5分,满分37. 5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Welcome to your new job with us and we hope you have a happy and long career. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure What calls for the development of smart cities? A. The rapid progress in 5G networks. B. The marked increase in world population. C. The growing number of residents living in cities. D. The major concern over the safety of living in cities. 13. How does the author explain the way smart cities work? A. By making a contrast. B. By giving examples. C. By listing figures. D. By telling a story. 14. What can we learn from Mrinalini Ingram about smart cities? A Air pollution will be stopped in its track. B. People will be better aware of environmental protection. C. People will be able to make the most of our environment at will. D. Resources can be saved by keeping track of how they are used. 15. What is the author’s attitude toward smart cities? A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful. C 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段“After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. (毕竟,根据联合国的一份报告,到2050年,预计全球60%以上的人口将居住在城市。让这些城市更适合这么多人居住的答案在于创造“智能”城市。)”可知因为越来越多的居民居住在城市里,需要创造智能城市。故选C。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“But what exactly does a smart city do? In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic condition as they ride. 根据第五段“ “Smart cities will also allow us to save resources.” said Mrinalini Ingram. “By using sensors and 5G networks to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities as well.” (“智能城市还能让我们节约资源。”姆里纳利尼·英格拉姆说。“通过使用传感器和5G网络来监测水、气和电的使用情况,城市管理者可以找出如何更有效地分配和节约这些资源。在智能城市中,二氧化碳和其他空气污染物的排放也可以得到更密切的监测。”) ”可推断通过跟踪资源的使用情况可以节省资源。故选D。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Of course, it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in small ways. China, for instance, is making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home? ____16____ Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf by accident. Before going to bed, Ben found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study (书房) at once. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate. “This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.” She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself more chocolate for any other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident. Now with a lot of chocolates in hand, Ben’s bad attitude disappeared. Nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. “I’m sorry I lied to you, mum. Please take back the chocolate.” Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn’t hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolate. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling. “Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.” 词汇激活: 行为类: ① 珍视:cherish/treasure ② 展示:display/show/demonstrate ③ 承认:confess/admit 情绪类: ① 羞愧:shame/abashment ② 紧张:nervousness/anxiety ③ 惊讶:surprise/astonishment 【点睛】[高分句型1] Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed.
