Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
1. What can we infer from Sharon’s words about high school?
A. Teachers are quite strict. B. Students often stay up at night.
C. Teachers provide little care for students. D. Students should make good use of their time.
2. Who mentions the importance of friends?
A. David. B. Frank. C. Sharon. D. Eddie
3 How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Bored. D. Relaxed.

Two years ago, Holmes participated in Back to School Bash. He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.
Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”
Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”

There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but actually are not.
“Face the music” is a good example. When someone says they have to face the music, it does not mean they are going to a musical show or a concert. To “face the music” means accepting the bad results of behavior.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please do not drive it. It is a very fast car and you are not on the insurance (保险).” But you do not listen. You want to show it to some friends and pretend (假装) the car is yours. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. The “music” here is the result of your behavior. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the “music” is, you must face it.
There are other American expressions that mean the same as “face the music”.
“Take your medicine” means accepting the results of something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!
“Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.
8. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. To invite a friend to go to a musical performance.
B. To tell people how to deal with a bad situation.
C. To give people a lesson on an action.
D. To introduce some expressions.
9. Which action belongs to “take your medicine”?
A. You broke the traffic rules and were liable to a fine.
B. You worked hard but failed in the exam.
C You caught a cold and took some medicine.
D. You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.
10. Which of the following expressions doesn’t have the same meaning with the others?
A. Face the music. B. Take your medicine.
C. Make your bed. D. Pay the piper.
11. The next programme may talk about ________.
A. other words and their stories B. the beginning of “pay the piper”
C. the wider use of “face the music” D. an example of “take your medicine”
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

Few things are more satisfying than sleeping late on weekends. But though the extra sleep may improve your mood, it does not appear to improve your health. A new study shows that so-called “recovery sleep” cannot reset the body clock and may actually lead to some serious health problems.
Christopher Depner, an assistant professor at the Department of Integrative Physiology of the University of Colorado Boulder, said, “Sleep loss can influence a range of physiological systems. It can increase our risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, it can cause weight gain, and it can increase our risk of diabetes (糖尿病).”
In the study, Depner and his colleagues divided the volunteers into three groups. One group was allowed to get a full night’s sleep. The next was kept to just five hours each night. And the third group went back and forth, limited to five hours of shut-eye during the workweek, allowed as much sleep as they wanted over the weekend, and then back to five hours for the last couple of days.
“We found that a loss of sleep leads to a sharp increase in snacking. But even more surprising, sleeping on the weekend doesn’t help—and even makes thing worse” said Depener. “After the weekend, when they went back to getting inadequate sleep during the work or school week, their liver and muscle insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity or blood sugar regulation was reduced. And this is not something we found in people who had long-term inadequacy sleep schedules. So it’s possible that this is a worsening of the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar for these specific tissues after the weekend.”
So make a date with a pillow. And trade the sweets for sweet dreams.
12. What effect does sleep loss have on people?
A. It results in changes in their moods.
B. It does harm to the body clock.
C. It damages the liver severely.
D. It makes people become heavier.
13. What do we know about the volunteers in the second group?
A They were allowed to have the least sleep in a week.
B. They could have as much sleep as possible on weekends.
C. Their liver and muscle insulin sensitivity was reduced.
D. Their ability to regulate blood sugar was found worsened.
14. What does the author advise readers to do according to the text?
A. To sleep extra hours on weekends.
B. To balance their work and sleep.
C. To trade some sweets as possible.
D. To get enough sleep on weekdays.
15. From which part of a website is the text probably taken?
A. Culture. B. Health. C. Sci-tech. D. Fashion.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. B

A. David. B. Frank. C. Sharon. D. Eddie
3. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Bored. D.

Holmes admits he too, benefits from the process.
4. What do we know about Holmes two years ago?
A. He had only one job.
B. He earned a lot as a barber.
C. He offered free haircuts to the poor kids.
D. He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.
5. The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______.
A. Holmes is very strict with the kids
B. Holmes also learns a lot from the kids
C. being a fluent reader needs plenty of practice
D. many kids have trouble in reading a storybook
6. What can we learn from the last Paragraph?
A. Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.
B. Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.
C. Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.
D. Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Storybook Barber
B. Back to School Bash
C. Reading Counts A Lot
D. Care About the Kids
C
C. You caught a cold and took some medicine.
D. You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.
10. Which of the following expressions doesn’t have the same meaning with the others?
A. Face the music. B. Take your medicine.
C Make your bed. D. Pay the piper.
11. The next programme may talk about ________.
A. other words and their stories B. the beginning of “pay the piper”
C. the wider use of “face the music” D. an example of “take your medicine”
D
A. They were allowed to have the least sleep in a week.
A. Culture. B. Health. C. Sci-tech. D. Fashion.
