Books We Love
Twenty Questions
Mac Barnett
The point of this book, from a pair of children’s literature all-stars, is conversation. Some of the questions are simple, some complex, and all are paired with attractive, often amusing illustrations from Christian Robinson.
Alone: The Journey s of Three Young Refugees (难民)
Paul Tom
The critically admired documentary Seuls is reinterpreted as a fully illustrated adaptation for young readers. Traveling on your own when you’re a kid is difficult, not to mention traveling as a refugee to a country where you don’t even speak the language. The stories of three kids from Iran, Burundi and Uganda, respectively, are thrown into sharp relief when their narratives are illustrated by Baillairgé Mélanie on the page. It’s so exciting and young readers may completely forget the book they are reading isn’t fictional.
The Eyes and the Impossible
Dave Eggers
Certain children’s books take the voices of animals, or toys that become animals, and are so pure, so sincere, that they become part of our own voices. Jchannes, the Eyes of the park, who runs like light, who sees you but is never seen, is a dog who wants nothing more than to be free. With Shawn Harris’ grand illustrations, Johannes is a hero for all time.
A Walk in the Woods
Nikki Grimes
A sad boy, suffering the loss of his father, follows a treasure map into the woods they used to visit together. Nikki Grimes’ powerful, yet tender language is an ideal complement(补充) to Jerry Pinkney’s loose art. Honest, healing-this is a memorable story of strength and comfort. It’s a must-read for anyone who cares deeply about children’s books.
1. Which book is written through the voice of animals?
A. Twenty Questions. B. Alone: The Journeys of Three Young Refugees.
C. The Eyes and the Impossible. D. A Walk in the Woods.
2. What can we learn about the second book?
A. It is adapted from a film. B. It receives much criticism.
C. It offers advice on traveling. D. It tells of an imaginary story.
3 What do the four books have in common?
A. They are in form of questions. B. They focus on family matters.
C. They are intended for young readers. D. They are illustrated by the same artist.

At 75 years old, Geda Qawla finds himself forgetting more and more words: the names of trees or types of bird. As one of just five remaining speakers of Ongota, he gets few opportunities to speak his mother tongue.
The decline of this Ethiopian tongue is a small part of a global linguistic crisis. Currently, a language dies every two weeks. If this trend continues, half of the 7,000 languages spoken today could go silent by the end of this century. Most at risk are the 50 per cent of languages that lack a written form, and those that are spoken by 10,000 people or fewer.
The biggest drivers are technology and globalisation. As regions become more interconnected, speakers of smaller languages are coming under pressure to drop their mother tongue in favour of bigger languages. Increasing levels of migration also play a role, cutting speakers off from their native languages and forcing them to adopt new ones.
Some languages have been brought back from the extinction. These languages were the subjects of decades-long“revitalisation programmes”, involving sustained investments in schools, media and even road signs. For most languages, however, there are few resources for this, including Ongota.
Researchers at nearby Arba Minch University are working on a dictionary of the Ongota language in the hope of preserving it. Several young, educated Ongota are also keen to preserve the language. These include Worro Molle,25,a civil servant in the nearby town, who is trying to learn it by himself with the aid of an old handbook. “This language is part of me,” he said. For Savà, the Italian anthropologist, the disappearance of Ongota would be a tragedy. “When you lose a language, you lose a richness, a vision of the world that is completely unique.”
4. What troubles Geda about the Ongota language?
A. He lacks enough language practice. B. The language has new changes in words.
C. Few want to learn the language from him. D. It is forbidden to use the language in public.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. What languages require protection. B. How technology changes languages.
C. Measures to preserve endangered languages. D. Reasons for the decline of smaller languages.
6. What does Worro Molle think of the Ongota language?
A. It is invaluable. B. It has a bright future.
C. It is difficult to learn. D. It requires promoting.
7. What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce a man with a rare language. B. To stress the richness of world languages.
C. To explore a social phenomenon of languages. D. To present a research on a language programme.
A 5. D 6. A 7. C

As one of just five remaining speakers of Ongota, he gets few opportunities to speak his mother tongue.(75岁的Geda Qawla发现自己忘记了越来越多的单词:树的名字或鸟类的种类。 故选A。
根据文章第三段“The biggest drivers are technology and globalisation. As regions become more interconnected, speakers of smaller languages are coming under pressure to drop their mother tongue in favour of bigger languages. Increasing levels of migration also play a role, cutting speakers off from their native languages and forcing them to adopt new ones.(最大的驱动力是技术和全球化。随着各地区之间的联系越来越紧密,使用小语种的人正面临着放弃母语、转而使用大语种的压力。不断增加的移民水平也起到了一定的作用,他们脱离了自己的母语,被迫采用新的语言)”可知,本段说明了小语种衰落的原因。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Researchers at nearby Arba Minch University are working on a dictionary of the Ongota language in the hope of preserving it. Several young, educated Ongota are also keen to preserve the language. These include Worro Molle,25,a civil servant in the nearby town, who is trying to learn it by himself with the aid of an old handbook. “This language is part of me,” he said.(附近的Arba Minch大学的研究人员正在研究一本昂戈塔语词典,希望能保存它。一些受过良好教育的年轻昂戈塔人也热衷于保护这门语言。这其中就包括附近城镇25岁的公务员Worro Molle,他正试图借助一本旧手册自学昂戈塔语。“这种语言是我的一部分,”他说)”可知,Worro Molle认为这门语言是自己的一部分,他正在努力自学并进行语言的保护,所以他觉得它是极为宝贵的。故选A。

Researchers investigated whether letting students use their phones for very brief amounts of time — called phone or technology breaks — can enhance classroom performance and reduce mobile use — and it seems to have worked according to their study.
Throughout a full term, the research team led by Professor Ryan Redner let students use their phones during the break, lasting one, two, or four minutes, respectively. In some of the bi-weekly sessions, the researchers introduced equally long question breaks as a control condition. During the breaks, students were not allowed to use their phones but were encouraged to ask questions. Both breaks occurred 15 minutes into the lecture element of class. In the study, phone use was defined as touching the phone.
The results, published in the journal Frontiers in Education, showed that when technology breaks were introduced, students generally used their phones less often than during the sessions with only question breaks. During breaks lasting just 60 seconds, phone use was at its lowest, making them the most efficient at reducing the time students spent on their phones during class. The researchers at Southern Illinois University say it is not yet fully understood why that might be, but Redner said one possibility is that one minute is enough time to read and send a smaller number of messages. “If they have more time to send many messages, they may be more likely to receive messages and respond again during class.”
The research team also found that in class sessions where one-minute breaks were in effect, students’ test performance crested: Higher average test scores for over 80% of participants were consistently observed. The researchers say that it is unlikely that students behaved differently knowing their phone use was monitored — an effect called “reactivity”.
While the results point to the possible effectiveness of short technology breaks, the researchers said more studies are needed. “We hope our findings inspire researchers and teachers to try approaches to reducing cell phone use that are reinforcement-based.”
8. What was the purpose of the study?
A. To monitor students’ behavior in class. B. To evaluate the quality of question breaks.
C. To get proper amount of time for phone use. D. To determine the efficiency of technology breaks.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Students used phones less with question breaks.
B. One-minute breaks had the most efficient effect.
C. Researchers found scientific evidence for their findings.
D. Phone breaks led to students sending more messages than usual.
10 What does the underlined word “crested” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Remained stable. B. Became misty. C. Peaked. D. Worsened.
11. What did the researchers suggest?
A. Students use phones more often during class. B. Teachers stop monitoring students’ phone use.
C. Their findings should be applied in more fields. D. Further studies should be conducted on the issue.
D 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据下文内容“Higher average test scores for over 80% of participants were consistently observed.( 持续观察到超过80%的参与者的平均测试成绩更高。)”
根据最后一段内容“While the results point to the possible effectiveness of short technology breaks, the researchers said more studies are needed. “We hope our findings inspire researchers and teachers to try approaches to reducing cell phone use that are reinforcement-based.”(虽然研究结果表明短暂的技术休息可能有效,但研究人员表示,还需要更多的研究。‘我们希望我们的发现能激励研究人员和教师尝试以强化为基础的减少手机使用的方法。’)”可知,研究人员认为建议进行更多的研究。故选D。

I worked with Frank who was kind, but quick to voice his opinion especially when he thought something wasn’t right. Some misunderstood his intent. ___16___ The reason for this has to do with a simple two-word phrase: healthy disagreement.
Healthy disagreement is the ability to honestly and respectfully present an opposing opinion instead of simply going along with what’s presented. ___17___ A culture of healthy disagreement also improves the quality of a team’s work by exposing shortcomings in singular ways of thinking.
___18___ Some people have personalities that are simply more agreeable. This isn’t necessarily bad because highly agreeable people typically display a high degree of empathy. Taken too far, agreeableness can also become a weakness. It can tempt you to resist speaking up when needed. Another reason has to do with the way people tend to act in groups. People feel social pressure to agree with others, even when they don’t understand the reasons-or even when. those reasons don’t make sense. ___19___
There are a few things you can do to promote a culture of healthy disagreement. Don’t disagree just for the sake of disagreeing. One way is to ask yourself: If I don’t say this, will I regret it later? ___20___ Often, it’s not what you say that people take the wrong way, rather, it’s how you say it. If you’re the type who isn’t afraid to speak up even when everyone else agrees, keep doing so. Or, if you’re the opposite, the next time someone speaks up or starts to rock your boat, resist the urge to dismiss them as “difficult.” Remember the value they bring and the power of those two emotionally-intelligent words: healthy disagreement.
A. He was afraid to bring trouble for himself.
B. But most appreciated him for keeping it real.
C. Healthy disagreement can be difficult to achieve.
D. Put simply, people are often afraid to be different.
E. When you do speak up, remember to do so respectfully.
F. It promotes creativity and helps teams avoid groupthink.
G. Without respect, disagreement can easily turn into personal attacks.
B 17. F 18. C 19. D 20. E

根据上文“I worked with Frank who was kind, but quick to voice his opinion especially when he thought something wasn’t right. Some misunderstood his intent. (我和弗兰克一起工作过,他很善良,但也会很快表达自己的观点,尤其是当他认为某件事不对的时候。有些人误解了他的意图。)”及下文“The reason for this has to do with a simple two-word phrase: healthy disagreement. (其原因与一个简单的两个词有关:健康的分歧。)”可知,虽然有些人误解他的意图,但是大多数人欣赏他直言不讳的态度,与B项“But most appreciated him for keeping it real. (但大多数人都赞赏他保持真实。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Healthy disagreement is the ability to honestly and respectfully present an opposing opinion instead of simply going along with what’s presented. (健康的分歧是能够真诚且尊重地提出相反的观点,而不是仅仅随声附和所呈现的内容。)”可知,健康的分歧是诚实地、尊重地提出反对意见,后文应该说明其积极影响,与F项“It promotes creativity and helps teams avoid groupthink. (它促进创造力并帮助团队避免群体思维。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选F项。
【18题详解】
根据下文“Some people have personalities that are simply more agreeable. This isn’t necessarily bad because highly agreeable people typically display a high degree of empathy. Taken too far, agreeableness can also become a weakness. It can tempt you to resist speaking up when needed. Another reason has to do with the way people tend to act in groups. (有些人的性格只是更讨人喜欢。这不一定是坏事,因为非常和蔼可亲的人通常会表现出高度的同理心。如果走得太远,宜人性也会成为一个弱点。它会诱使你在需要时拒绝说出来。另一个原因与人们倾向于群体行为的方式有关。)”可知,健康的分歧难以实现是有原因的,空处应引出话题,与C项“Healthy disagreement can be difficult to achieve. (健康的分歧可能很难实现。)”上下文一致,故选C项。
【19题详解】
根据上文“People feel social pressure to agree with others, even when they don’t understand the reasons-or even when. those reasons don’t make sense. (人们会感到社会压力,要求他们同意他人的观点,即使他们不理解其中的原因,甚至不理解何时理解。这些理由没有意义。)”可知,人们在群体中会感受到社会压力而同意他人,即使不理解原因,这说明人们害怕与众不同,与D项“Put simply, people are often afraid to be different. (简而言之,人们往往害怕与众不同。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选D项。
【20题详解】
根据下文“Often, it’s not what you say that people take the wrong way, rather, it’s how you say it. If you’re the type who isn’t afraid to speak up even when everyone else agrees, keep doing so. Or, if you’re the opposite, the next time someone speaks up or starts to rock your boat, resist the urge to dismiss them as ‘difficult.’ Remember the value they bring and the power of those two emotionally-intelligent words: healthy disagreement. (通常,人们产生误解的往往不是你说的内容,而是你说话的方式。如果你是那种即使其他人都同意也敢于直言的人,那就继续这样做。或者,如果你是相反的类型,那么下次有人直言不讳或开始扰乱你的计划时,要克制住将他们视为“难相处”的冲动。记住他们带来的价值以及那两个充满情商的词的力量:健康的分歧。)”可知,重要的是说话的方式,所以此处应该强调说话要尊重,与E项“When you do speak up, remember to do so respectfully. 第二节 (满分25分)

In our classroom, we have something called a job wheel. Our teacher put all the jobs on a small inside circle, and he put everyone's name on a larger outside circle. On the first day of every month, we turn the wheel to see what our jobs will be.
All year, I'd been wishing to be part of the pet-care team, and last month, my wish finally came true! Along with Miguel and Imani, I'd be taking care of our class pet, the lizard(蜥蜴) Larry! We took turns sharing responsibilities: giving him fresh water and food, cleaning his terrarium(育养箱), checking the temperature, and singing him songs. We were taking great care of him.
But one morning when we came in, Larry was nowhere to be seen! We made sure that we had put it in the terrarium and closed its door before leaving the classroom. We were so anxious that we went to the teacher's office to find our teacher. As soon as we told him what happened, he called for everyone's attention and let us take a 10-minute break for Operation Lizard Hunt. Leave no stone or notebook unturned!
The search began. Even with our entire class searching, we did not find Larry. All the students were disappointed and everyone was silent the whole day. I couldn't think about anything else for the rest of the day. What if he gets outside and wanders into the street? Or he gets picked up by people who doesn't know what kind of treats Larry likes? Sometimes when I'm stressed, my mind turns into a worry machine. By the end of the school day, I was panicked so much that I felt like I could barely breathe! Miguel and Imani were also upset and guilty. When we told our teacher how worried we were, he agreed to let our pet-care team stay a few minutes late to do one last search for the day
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

When Larry entered the terrarium, we found the secret to its escape.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly we heard a noise from the ceiling. It’s hard to believe that with everyone in our whole class searching, not one of us had thought to look up. But there was Larry, peeking out from a vent, just as happy as could be. Luckily, Mr. Jones is on the tall side, so all he had to do was stand on a desk and reach up with his arm, and then Larry could climb right onto his hand! The next thing we knew, our little escape artist was back in his terrarium, safe and sound.
When Larry entered the terrarium, we found the secret to its escape. When we tucked Larry in for the night, we saw that his favorite climbing tree had tipped over just enough to lift the corner of the terrarium lid a bit. Larry escaped from the hole. We repositioned the tree and put heavy books on it. The next morning, Mr. Jones brought in a secure terrarium cover. Our song about Larry still makes me smile when I think about it. So, making up a song or poem can make you focus on other stuff and help you feel better.

A He lacks enough language practice. B. The language has new changes in words.
C. Few want to learn the language from him. D. It is forbidden to use the language in public.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. What languages require protection. B. How technology changes languages.

10. What does the underlined word “crested” in paragraph 4 mean?

In the ever-changing and continually developing landscape of technology, Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a groundbreaking innovation, reshaping how we interact with machines and the world around us. Understanding the core principles of this technology and its potential consequences for the future is of vital importance.
Generative AI is a subset (子集) of machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional AI systems that follow preset rules to make decisions, generative AI learns from vast amounts of data and creates novel content that is often indistinguishable from human-generated work. In fact, it has revolutionized various fields. In art, it can create amazing images and even compose music. In writing, it can generate articles, stories, and even poetry. In the tech industry, it aids in designing new products and improving software development processes.
However, with great power comes great responsibility. The rise of generative AI has caused ethical (道德的) debates. For instance, the potential for deepfakes (深度伪造)-AI-generated videos or images that can be used to mislead or control-creates significant risks. It’s essential to approach generative AI with a critical mind, understanding its limitations and the ethical considerations involved. Moreover, generative AI raises questions about creativity and authorship. When an AI creates a piece of art or literature, who holds the copyright? These are complex issues that society is still tackling with.
As you research deeper into the world of AI, remember that technology is a tool. It can be used to solve problems and improve lives, or it can be misused. It’s up to you, as the next generation of innovators and leaders, to help AI develop in a positive direction.
Generative AI is a powerful technology with the potential to transform industries and create new possibilities. So stay informed about these advancements and consider how you can contribute to shaping a future where technology benefits all of humanity.
12. What can we learn about Generative AI from the text?
A. It is a new form of entertainment. B. It has changed our life completely.
C. It raises complex ethical problems. D. It is too advanced for society to handle.
13. How does generative AI differ from traditional AI systems?
A. It creates better content than humans. B. It is specially used in the tech industry.
C. It follows preset rules to make decisions. D. It generates new content from loads of data.
14. What is one of the concerns raised by the rise of generative AI?
A. The ability to create lifelike images. B. The decline in the demand for human artists.
C. The potential misuse of AI-generated output. D. The reduced awareness of the copyright of works.
15. What is the author’s advice to the young generation?
A. To limit the advancement of AI. B. To use technology as a tool for good.
C. To become good innovators and leaders. D. To create new possibilities for industries.
