What can be finished in two years? Actually you can do a lot of things in two years. You can try a sport you’ve always wanted to start and become great at it. You can also learn a foreign language that you’ve dreamed to know and make it not only a dream.
I have always wanted to be a good speaker. But when I first entered into the junior high school, I used to be quite timid. I dared (敢于) not to answer questions in the class, let alone give a speech in public. But now I am a good speaker at my school. I even won the first prize in the speech contest. Why have I changed so much? It probably begins from a conversation between my teacher and me. She shared a story with me, which encouraged me a lot and gave me confidence. The story is about a Tibetan girl who is one of the characters in the documentary—The Yangtze River (《再会长江》). She realized her dream and changed her life through her continuous effort. I was deeply moved by her story and I knew that as long as I work hard, I could also change myself and make it. So from that day on I decided to try my best to make my dream come true. I put up my hands to answer questions in each class, and what’s more, I practiced speaking in front of my family.
This is only a small example. What I want to tell you is that I hope all of you can try your best to be a better you. Being the best of ourselves requires a positive (积极的) attitude. We should believe that we can overcome (克服) difficulties and achieve success. We should believe in our goals and work hard for them. At the same time, we should accept our shortcomings and mistakes and learn from them to become more mature (成熟的) and stronger.

How I have changed!
How time flies! I am a student in Grade 9 now. I have changed a lot in the last two years.
First, I used to be short and thin, but now I’m tall and strong. Second, I used to watch too much TV. Now I prefer doing sports. Third, I wasn’t so interested in studying two years ago. When my head teacher learnt about that, she helped me patiently. I began to study very hard. Now I have a good habit that I will go over my homework one more time when I finish. Last but not least, I was too weak to do much exercise two years ago. But with the help of the teachers and classmates, I can run very fast and I’m also good at playing basketball.

In the past, people didn’t need sports like running to stay healthy because they were very active. But these days, many of us spend most of the day sitting down. This means we need to get some exercise in our free time, and running is a cheap and easy way to do it. All you need is a good pair of shoes and some comfortable clothes.
You can choose different kinds of running. Fun runs are very popular. These are often 3 kilometers or 5 kilometers long and are great for beginners. For fitter people, you can choose the marathon which is a longdistance race about 42 kilometers long! Some excellent runners even choose the ultramarathon (超级马拉松) which is 100 kilometers. But don’t try the marathon rashly (轻率地), it needs a lot of patience and training.
Running is fun and scientists say it is one of the best ways to keep fit. But remember, safety first! Always warm up and stretch before you start running to prevent injuries (受伤). Remember not to drink too much water before you run.Wear bright colors if you run in the early morning or late evening so others can see you. What’s more, make sure you don’t do it every day—it’s important to have a rest between runs.
Running improves the health of almost every part of your body, including your brain. It can make you feel happier and healthier, and live longer. It also helps you sleep well, and that gives you the energy to enjoy your life more. So, why not put on your running shoes and hit the pavement? Your body and mind will thank you for it. So, let’s run before it’s too late!
3. Why do many people need to exercise in their free time nowadays?
A. Because they need to lose weight.
B. Because running is a popular sport.
C. Because they sit down most of the day.
4. If you are a beginner, what kind of running should you choose?
A. Fun runs. B. Marathons. C. Ultramarathons.
5. What should runners do when they choose to run?
A. Drink a lot of water before running.
B. Warm up and stretch before running.
C. Wear dark clothes when they run at night.
6. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Run for Health B. Ways of Running C. Join the Marathon
C
7 The writer starts the passage by ________.
A. telling a story B. asking a question C. making a comparison
8. Which word can replace the underlined word “timid”?
A. silent B. quiet C. shy
9. The writer did a lot of things to make her dream come true EXCEPT ________.
A. watching the documentary—The Yangtze River
B. answering questions in each class
C. practicing speaking in front of her family
10. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce the way to be a good speaker.
B. To encourage people to improve themselves.
C. To ask people to value time.
