Hello, I’m Carson, a media student from Britain. I love Chinese food! Last summer holiday, I visited China with my foodie friend, Haoxiang. Although I’ve only tasted the tip of the Chinese food iceberg, this journey has been a real eye-opener. I can’t wait to share it with you!
Mouth on Fire
Knowing how much I like spicy (辛辣的) food, we first flew to Chongqing. We went to a restaurant for lunch, and scanned the specials. My friend, Haoxiang ordered laziji—a chicken dish with chilli peppers. When it arrived, I couldn’t believe my eyes—there were more chilli peppers than chicken! Moments later, my mouth was on fire! Eyes streaming, I quickly swallowed an entire glass of water.

It was time to say goodbye to Chongqing and head to Beijing. There we taste the most well-known Beijing roast (烤的) duck. I first tried the duck skin with sugar. Then, I wrapped the duck meat inside a paper-thin wrapper, along with sweet bean sauce and vegetables. While we were enjoying the duck meat, the bones and leftovers were made into broth (汤). “One duck served three ways” is a waste-not-want-not approach, with everything tasting just wonderful.
Drinking Up Your Dumplings
Continuing our adventures in Shanghai, we started the day by heading out for breakfast. We visited a well-known steamed dumpling restaurant that served tangbao filled with steaming broth. You need to be careful that they don’t burn your mouth. The trick is to first nibble a little hole in the wrapper and allow the liquid (液体) inside to cool a little. Once that’s done, you can suck out the broth, and then swallow the rest of the dumpling.
I was really interested to learn how the Chinese believe that a person’s food tastes can represent their character. For example, a person who loves spicy food is seen as enthusiastic and lively. As the saying goes, “You are what you eat? !
48. How many cities did Carson visit according to the passage?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
49. Which title is the most suitable for _____▲________?
A. You Are What You Eat B. Waste Not, Want Not
C. Full Stomach, Busy Hands D. The Tip of the Iceberg
50. What can we learn about Chinese dishes according to the passage?
A. Different Chinese dishes stand for different characters.
B. Laziji is a kind of hot and spicy chicken dish with chilli peppers.
C. You'd better enjoy tangbao immediately as the dumplings are served.
D. Chinese people just enjoy duck meat and throw the bones and leftovers away.

The cop suddenly slowed his walk. Near the door of a darkened shop a man was standing. As the cop walked toward him, the man spoke quickly.
“It’s all right, officer,” he said. “I’m waiting for a friend. Twenty years ago we agreed to meet here tonight. He was my best friend and we grew up together here in New York, like two brothers. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning, I was to start for the West. He thought New York was the only place on earth. We agreed that night that we would meet here again in twenty years.”
“Interesting,” said the cop. “Have you heard from Jimmy since you went to the West?”
“Yes,” said the man. “But after a year or two, we stopped. The West is big. I moved around everywhere and had to fight for my success. But I know that Jimmy will meet me here if he can. In New York a man doesn’t change much. So I came a thousand miles to stand here tonight.”
The waiting man took out a fine watch. “Three minutes to ten,” he said. “It was ten that night when we said goodbye here.”
“I’ll go on my way, ”the cop said, “I hope your friend comes all right. If he isn’t here at ten, are you going to leave?”
“I am not! ”said the man. “I’ll wait half an hour, at least. If Jimmy is alive on earth, he’ll be here by that time. Goodbye, officer.”
“Goodbye,” said the cop, and walked away.
About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long coat came hurrying across the street. “Is that you, Bob?” he asked, doubtfully.
“Is that you, Jimmy Wells? ”cried the man at the door. “I never thought you were so tall.” “Oh, I grew a little after I was twenty. ”
The new man took the man’s hands in his. “It’s Bob! It surely is. Twenty years is a long time. Come on, Bob, let’s have a good talk about old times. ”
The two men started along the street, arm in arm. At the corner stood a shop bright with electric lights. When they came near, each turned to look at the other’s face.
The man from the West stopped suddenly and pulled his arm away. “You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said....
The man from the West opened the little piece of paper. His hand began to shake a little as he read.
Bob:
I was at the place on time. I saw the face of the man wanted by Chicago cops. I didn’t want to arrest you myself. So I went and got another cop and sent him to do the job.

Nearly all life on the earth relies on one source of energy —the sun. Solar (太阳的) energy lights the days, warms the air and land, and drives the planet’s climate.
The simplest way to get energy from the sun is from direct exposure (暴露) to its rays. In ancient China, clothes and books were taken out of homes and placed in the sunshine. This helped reduce damage from moisture (潮湿) and insects.
Another clever use of solar energy is in architectural designs. This can be traced back as far as 6000 years ago. During this period, homes were built with their openings facing south. This meant that even in winter, the low rays of sunshine would reach and warm their insides. By 2000 BCE, cities were designed with streets running east to west. This ensured that each house had a south-facing section receiving the most sunlight.
The ancient Chinese also created clever tools to capture energy from the sun. One notable example was yangsui (阳燧), or the “burning mirror”. This bronze, concave fire-starting tool was first used during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BCE).
The ancient Chinese knew bronze to be a reflective metal. The concave shape of yangsui also demonstrates that they understood how to gather sunlight. When the rays hit the surface of yangsui, they reflected into a single focal point. The high temperature at that focal point was sufficient to set dry plant fibers on fire.
Yangsui was a particularly useful tool for cooking Indeed, The Book of Rites described how at the start of each day, the son of each household would attach yangsui to his belt. This way, he could easily start the family fire.
Nowadays, solar energy is used across the country in more efficient ways. Solar water heaters, which absorb (吸收) energy from the sun, have become popular in modern-day China. These water systems arc not only cheaper and more efficient than coal or wood-burning stoves, but also help reduce CO₂.
Turning sunlight into electricity is another application of solar technology. In recent years, China has added more solar power capacity than any other country. In the northwest of China, there is a first-of-its-kind, panda-shaped solar power plant. It is steering the city of Datong —previously known as the “capital of coal” —towards a greener path. Consisting of 170, 000 panels, the “panda power plant” generates 80 million kilowatt hours of solar-powered electricity each year. This is equal to the total annual electricity consumption of over 30, 000 households.
54. How does the writer explain the use of solar energy from ancient China to the present?
A. By providing examples. B. By giving causes.
C. By comparing conditions. D. By listing numbers.
55. Which picture below shows the working process of yangsui?
A. B. C. D.
56. The following paragraph can best go after ________
Heat from the sun was also used to preserve food, such as rice, fish, meat and vegetables —a practice that continues to the present day.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5
57. What can we learn from the passage?
A. In ancient China, people had no idea of using solar energy.
B. China has been using solar energy for a very short period of time.
C. Solar energy has recently been used in China in cheaper and greener ways.
D. Ancient Chinese built homes with north-facing openings for more sunlight.

In the late 19th century in Europe, many people had more money to spend than before. They had better education, so they could read about the world outside of their own countries. They mostly couldn’t have the money for real travel, but they could dream about travel. Surely the fact that people wanted to see the world is one of the reasons why French writer Jules Verne’s great science fiction Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (海底两万里) (1870) was such a success.
The story begins when a sea monster that looks like a whale sinks (击沉) an American boat. The “monster” is causing chaos and spreading fear among sailors and the public. Passengers are too afraid to cross the Atlantic.
They want to kill this mysterious monster because it is endangering human life. The great powers meet in New York and decide to send a ship to deal with the monster. The crew (船员) include two sailors, Ned Land, Professor Aronnax and his servant, Conseil. The ship is the Abraham Lincoln under Captain Farragut, a very good sailor. After chasing at sea for three months, they are almost giving up. Captain Farragut is the only person who still believes in the monster and asks for another three days. It is almost dark at the end of the second day. Ned Land is standing on the deck and shouting, “There it is! There it is!” Everybody rushes to him because he is pointing to the monster. They chase the monster all day, travelling four hundred kilometers, but it does not tire. That night, the ship quietly floats closer and closer, until at last Ned Land can throw his harpoon. It hits the monster, but the ship sinks. All the crew are thrown into the sea.
As we follow their journey, we are left wondering what lies ahead. Will they kill the monster? What secrets will they uncover? The story is full of suspense and excitement, making it a perfect read for students in Grade Nine.
