I hope this couple's 10.marriage (marry) will last forever. It's thought that the first ever Chinese restaurant opened in 1908 in the UK. It was located in Piccadilly Circus, London. Although this was a great breakthrough for the cuisine , it didn't pick up popularity for years. Back in the 1950's the idea of Chinese food in the UK and America was simplistic:tinned Chinese curries (咖喱菜肴), processed foods and confused flavours (味道), like Chinese food on pizza. Takeout restaurants were few and far between and other cuisines with less experimental flavours were favoured by Westerners. It wasn't until the 1960's and 1970's that Chinese food began getting the recognition. More citizens began arriving on Western soil from China and Chinatown started development in the 1970's, when chefs began talking about exotic (异国的) flavours. One typical figure during this period was Kenneth Lo. He wrote more than 30 books on Chinese cooking from the 1950's to the 1990's, with over one million copies sold in Britain. Lo also opened a cooking school in London during the 1980's, which was praised as Europe's first Chinese cooking school. Alongside this, people began opening up to the idea of varied flavours but dishes had to make the most of the ingredients (配料) available in the West. Chinese chefs began to adapt dishes to use readily available ingredients and also appeal more to Westerners. This ended with the creation of dishes that a Western audience recognizes as Chinese that you wouldn't even find in China. For example, Chop Suey used to be one of the most popular dishes found in the West but you wouldn't be able to find this dish with ease in China. The same goes for the beloved fortune cookies. Nowadays, more frequent travel of British people to China has exposed consumers to more varieties and both authentic (正宗的) and modern Chinese flavours. No longer do those living in the West fear complex and unfamiliar flavours; instead they accept the contrast and try to include them into their diet. 1.What happened to Chinese food after the first Chinese restaurant opened in London? Mostly she carried ingredients from the refrigerator to the large work table. Sometimes Uncle Dave let Josie stir (搅拌) the cake batter (面糊) with a wooden spoon. Josie wanted to learn to bake a cake on her own. She asked if Uncle Dave would show her how to make a cake. Her mother's birthday was only two days away. If Josie made a cake all by herself, it would be a wonderful surprise. On Saturday morning, Josie arrived at the bakery just as it was closing. The bakery always closed early on the weekend so Uncle Dave could walk his dogs. “Ready, Josie?” Uncle Dave asked,“Ready!” Josie answered. First, Uncle Dave had Josie get all the ingredients (原料) and line them up on the work table. Then he showed her how to measure flour and sugar so that she had the exact right amount. She added these ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Next, Uncle Dave tapped an egg on the side of the bowl to crack it. “Be careful not to get any bits of shell in the bowl,” he said. Josie tapped her egg very gently on the bowl. It didn't crack. She tried again, and this time the shell came apart. She pulled the egg apart over the bowl and watched the yellow egg yolk drop into the flour. Now it was time to stir. “This is fun!” said Josie. When the batter was ready, Uncle Dave helped Josie pour it into the cake pan. He gave Josie oven mitts (烤箱手套) and showed her how to put the pan in the oven without burning her hands. While the cake baked, Josie and Uncle Dave wiped off the table and washed all the dishes. ___ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 学生用书第31页 On her mother's birthday, Josie put the cake before her mom secretly. ____________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [读后续写四步曲] 第一步 通读全文,理清脉络 1. She asked if Uncle Dave would show her how to make a cake. While waiting, Uncle Dave told Josie why he opened this bakery in the first place. When Josie's mom opened her eyes, she couldn't believe what she saw. 3. Ten years later, when she opened her own charity bakery to help the poor and the homeless, Josie started her presentation with a simple sentence: “We are here to help.” While the cake baked, Josie and Uncle Dave wiped off the table and washed all the dishes. While waiting, Uncle Dave told Josie why he opened this bakery in the first place. When Uncle Dave graduated, he had to work in two places to make a living and one of them was a bakery. He gave free cakes and bread to the homeless. Working there helped him understand what he wanted in life — making people happy and helping people. Josie smiled and told Uncle Dave that she wanted to be like him, someone who is passionate and warmhearted. On her mother's birthday, Josie put the cake before her mom secretly. When Josie's mom opened her eyes, she couldn't believe what she saw. What was in sight was a perfect cake made by her perfect daughter. She told Josie that she would never forget this birthday because she had made it special. Surprisingly, the whole family shared this cake and they all found it amazing, which encouraged Josie. Ten years later, when she opened her own charity bakery to help the poor and the homeless, Josie started her presentation with a simple sentence: “We are here to help.” It is made up of various types of food, served in very small portions, either sweet or savory. Rice dumplings play their most important role in Chinese Lantern Festival, which is the last day of the Chinese New Year period. A tasty type of fried food made from glutinous rice flour that is filled with red bean paste, rolled in white sesame seeds, and fried. The rambutan is a tropical fruit native to Malaysia, now grown throughout South East Asia as well as Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Central America. A cousin of the more wellknown lychee, both fruits are members of the soapberry family. Rambutans have brownishpink shells (壳) that are covered in hairlike bristles—in fact, the name rambutan comes from “rambut”, the Malay word for “hair”. The inner white fruit of the rambutan is juicy and sweet. Some say that the rambutan tastes like a sweet green grape. How to Eat Rambutans Rambutans are most often enjoyed fresh but also sometimes cooked, used to make rambutan jam. Because of their hard shells, they transport well and are ideal for packed lunches and picnics. They are easily added to cold dishes like fruit salads. Rambutan Nutrition and Benefits Rambutans are rich in vitamin C which helps strengthen the immune system and support brain health. Therefore, rambutans make a healthy sweet snack any time of day. Rambutans are low in calories and also rich in fiber (纤维). Where to Buy Rambutans Fresh rambutans from abroad can be found in supermarkets nationwide. You can also find rambutans in Chinese and South East Asian markets, both fresh and canned. Though they can be found year round, look for fresh rambutans when they are most plentiful in August and September. When choosing rambutans, pick those that are dark reddishbrown in color. Very pale, light colored rambutans may not be ready to eat. __________ While you don't have to immediately put rambutans in a fridge, they will last longer if you do so. But they have been developing their kitchen skills for more than half their lives. When they had just learned to walk, they loved to hang out in the kitchen while their parents cooked dinner. At age 5, they made their first dish without help: pumpkin muffins. Audrey can still remember the way the muffins rose in the oven (烤箱), the painful wait for them to cool and the sweetness of the freshmade treats. “It was super exciting to make something so delicious almost all on our own,” she says. Their parents are not very skilled at cooking, so Lilly and Audrey turned to other people for cooking advice. Auspiciously,_they live in Sonoma, California, an area that is known for its farms and restaurants. One local cook gave the twins (双胞胎) lessons on cooking techniques, such as how to use knives; those classes taught Lilly and Audrey how to use kitchen tools safely. In 2009, they started a blog (博客), on which they share photos and recipes (菜谱) they have created. Though the twins love creating sweet foods such as muffins, they also think about healthy food. They hope their cookbook will encourage kids to make better food choices by making them more knowledgeable. “Knowing more about your food and where it comes from certainly causes you to know more about what you eat and to put the best food in your body,” Lilly says. That has been true for her. Lilly used to avoid eggplant at all costs, until one day she tried cooking it for herself. Now it's one of her favorite vegetables. “If you make something yourself and give it a try, you'll probably like it,” she says. 24.Lilly and Audrey's first dish ________. But until now, few studies have actually investigated (调查) why. This is what a recent US study set out to uncover. Researchers had 16 participants follow two different meal schedules, each for a period of six days in total. The first group had their meals early in the day with the last meal consumed six hours and 40 minutes before bedtime. The second group had their daily meals four hours later. This meant they skipped breakfast and instead had lunch, dinner and an evening meal. Their last meal was consumed only two and a half hours before sleep. All the participants consumed the same diet, and all of their meals were equally spaced with around four hours between them. The researchers looked at three measures associated with weight gain: the influence of appetite, the impact of eating time on calories burned, and changes of fat tissue (组织). They found that compared to an early eating pattern, late eating not only increased feelings of hunger the following day, it also increased the rate of “hunger” hormones (激素) in the blood. Late eating also caused a decrease in calories burned the following day. Fat tissue samples taken from the participants also showed the increased fat storage. These results suggest that late eating could lead to weight gain. Given that the study was only conducted on a limited number of participants and over a very short time, more research will be needed to further understand whether these changes are only temporary, and what effects longterm late night eating can have on the weight gain mechanisms (机制). Anyway, this study adds to a growing body of evidence showing just how important meal timing can be when it comes to body weight. Therefore, people who are watching their weight may want to stay away from the late night snacks and favour eating most of their meals earlier. 28.What is the study designed to do? D.The greater accumulation (累积) of fat. 根据第三段“Fat tissue samples taken from... lead to weight gain.” D。 31.What is the limitation of the study? A.A small number of participants and trial days. B.The different eating times in the two groups. C.Lack of more measures related to weight gain. D.Limited tissue samples taken from volunteers. 根据倒数第二段“Given that the study was only... weight gain mechanisms (机制).” 故选A。 D (2024·山东临沂期中) Do you enjoy eating a nice piece of a cow? Or pig back meat? Chances are that you do, though you're more likely to call these dishes beef and bacon. But why do the words for these animals change after they're killed and served? And why does this change only happen with certain meats? To answer these questions, we have to step back almost 1,000 years into the past, as the current saying is that this linguistic phenomenon (语言现象) results from the Norman invasion (侵略) of England. In 1066, the Old Frenchspeaking Normans took control of the AngloSaxons, who spoke Old English. The Norman rulers used different measures of oppression (压迫的措施), but they also introduced their language. They used French words for the meat that appeared on their tables. Meanwhile, the Old English words were still used by the AngloSaxons who farmed and raised the animals. Such was the Norman influence on England that their terms for meat have always been there as part of the modern English language for cuisine (烹饪). It's not just adult cows that got a new name after they were killed and prepared for Norman dinners. A young cow is called a “calf”, and this word comes from Old English. However, the animal is changed into “veal” after it is cooked. Besides the word pig, which, like cow, has Old English origins (来源), the AngloSaxons used to use the word “swine” for these animals. Both became pork when the Normans ate their meat, though. Chicken is one of several exceptions. While the Normans used the French word poulet for chicken meat, this became “pullet” in English. This word is only really used by chicken farmers. No one is quite sure why this happened! Here's another exception, as fish is fish regardless of whether it's swimming in a river or appearing on a dinner table. One possibility for why the French word poisson has never entered the English language is that it's too close to “poison” — something no one wants to eat! 32.What purpose do questions in the first paragraph serve? A.To attract readers' attention. B.To encourage studies on food. C.To offer some background information. D.To provide some advice for readers. 根据第一段“Do you enjoy eating... happen with certain meats?” 故选A项。 33.Why are French terms for meat used in modern English cuisine? A.The English who worked in farming came from France. B.French words for meat were much easier to remember. C.Normans brought their French language to England. D.French terms became popular among cooks worldwide. 根据第三段中“The Norman rulers used... appeared on their tables.”和“Such was the Norman influence... language for cuisine (烹饪).” 34.Which word from Old English is used to refer to a young cow? A.Beef. B.Veal. C.Swine. D.Calf. 根据第四段中“A young cow is called a ‘calf’, and this word comes from Old English.” 35.Why is the French word for fish avoided in English? A.There were already Old English words for fish in common use. B.English speakers found the word too similar to the word “poison”. C.The Normans did not eat fish as often as other meats. D.The French word was not introduced during the Norman invasion. 根据最后一段中“Here's another exception... no one wants to eat!” (2024·广东深圳期末) Milk plays an important role in a child's healthy growth, from a breastfed (母乳喂养的) baby to a teenager putting milk into a drink. __36__. Her mother had prepared a thermos (保温瓶) full of sancocho. It was one of Nilsa's favorite dishes, and the national dish of Panama — a country in central America and the hometown of Nilsa's family. Just thinking about sancocho made her mouth water. Finally, it was time for lunch. Nilsa carefully poured some sancocho into a bowl. When she looked up, she saw her classmates staring. “What is that? It smells really bad,” said Gus, covering his nose. “It's sancocho,” Nilsa responded. “It's kind of like chicken soup.” Codi glanced at the bowl and said, “Soup? It's more like a science experiment.” He laughed, pointed to his lunch, and asked, “That's one weird lunch. Why don't you eat something normal, like pizza?” Nilsa looked at everyone else's lunches: pizza, fries, and sandwiches. Suddenly she didn't feel hungry any more. When Nilsa returned home and complained about her classmates' negative comments, her mother wasn't mad. Instead, she listened attentively and reminded Nilsa that there is no such thing as “normal” or “weird” food, and that different cultures have their own unique dishes that are loved and appreciated by those who grew up with them. Nilsa's mother also suggested making a fresh batch for Nilsa to bring to school the next day. “Then you can share it with your classmates and tell them sancocho tastes great, and that our family has been eating it for hundreds of years. Your greatgrandmother taught your grandmother who then taught me. Nilsa nodded in excitement, and she was grateful for the opportunity to share her favorite dish with her classmates. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。 The next day at lunch, Nilsa pulled out her thermos.______________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ When Nilsa returned home and greeted her mother that day, her happiness was beyond description.___________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 参考范文: The next day at lunch, Nilsa pulled out her thermos. She proudly presented her classmates with a fresh batch of sancocho. She explained the dish's history and how it was a beloved part of her family's culture. To her surprise, her classmates were eager to try it. They all took a spoonful and were pleasantly surprised by the flavor. Even Gus, who had been so skeptical the day before, admitted that it was delicious. When Nilsa returned home and greeted her mother that day, her happiness was beyond description. She was proud to have shared a part of her culture with her classmates, and even more proud that they had enjoyed it. From then on, Nilsa brought sancocho to school every week, and she was always happy to share it with her friends. 学生用书第33页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
