How late is too late?
Time flies, or so they say. Whcther you are in Europe, Africa (21) America
humans are constantly measuring and checking time. Some of us are good at it-planning and doing
things way ahead of time-while others are always trying to beat the clock and do things at the
eleventh hour. And that's only if yort'te (22)
timre. What about if you are behind time?
Lateness (23)
se serious. If you were one minute late for work, would you resign?
It may sound extreme to many of us, but that is exactly (24)
happened in the UK
upper chamber of parliament, the House of Lords, in January 2ols, International developmegt
minister Lord Bates arrived one minute late, and, as a result, was unable to answer a saheduled
question. Instead of trying to make up for lost time, as many might do, he (25)

on the spot. His resignation, though, was not accepted by the UK prime minister
So, how late is too late? Many cultures take punctuality (准时)very seriousty,(26)
othars seem to accept falling behind as just the normal way of things.
In Latin America, things may happen five minutes, 20 minutes, an hour or even two after they
have been planned, However, in Sri Lanka, lateness is a part of the daily routine. This is due to its
heayy traffic conditions, In Rwanda, those attending to deadlines with strict timekeeping are said
to be 'like a typical European'. This is a place whero s not unusual to arrive at 1lam for a
meeting (27)__started at nine.
On the other hand, in Germany and Japan, a great emphasis is placed on a stricter
adherence(遵守) to time. In Japan. it is common (28)

time to spare for an appoinment. T hose (29)'_ arrived at the stroke of nine to a meeting

Global demand for water is increasing as many coubtries are experiencing large populatior
growth. Even in countries where the water supply is_', peopler are beginning to realize
how precious it is. As a result, many countries are developing ways to increase and32their
supplies of fresh water.
One such solution is desalination(海水的脱盐. 淡化), the process bywhich salt water is
trned into 33_ fresh water. This invoives 3_'salt compounds and other chemicals
from the salt water. The main disadvantage of this method has been the cost. Consequently, a
cheaper and more flexible method has been developed, whereby salt water is $5by passing
it through membranes (膜).
In the United Arab Emirates (AE), desalination bas nelped making up for the lack of natural
fresh water. The first desalination 36 was set up in the UAE in 1960, producing 56,250 litres
of fresh water a day. As the demand for fresh water has grown, so has the importance of
desalipation. Expertg forecast that in the next year, 2.7 billion litres of fresh water will be required
3"in the UAE, the majority of it being produced by desalination.
The water crisis is not a problem unique to dry countries. In countries with relatively high
rainfall, water shortages can still occur because of leakages, In addition, the average daily
consumption of water has risen to as much as 15o litres per person in recent years, due to the
increased use of modern technology in our homes. To overcome these problems, the public are
encouraged to limit their 38. and the water companies are being forced to repair pipes.
The demand for water will increase throughout this century, and therefore more countries will
tum to desalination as the solution to their 3water supoures. However, as water shortages
become more widespread due to global warming, this 40 vill not be enough to solye the
problem. Governments will have to ensure that water companies operate efficiently and the public
will leam that water is a precious resource to be used economically

Diana prove my mother's instruction that an expression of kindness in this fast-paced world stil

Section C2*4-8%
Direetions: Read the passage carefully. Then choose the most suitable statement from A-F for
each blank. There are two extra statements, which you do not need
A. These birds fase a specific kind of danger: buildings.
B. In reality, nough: large numbers of birds spend time in cities
C. Birds have more space in the countryside than in cities
D Birds are humans' important friends to some extent.

City life for birds
The concept of wild bird in cities might be new to you. When you think of wild birds, you
probably think,"countryside."____67_
As you might guess, cities can be dangerous places for wild birds. How can they be protected
from the dangers of urban life? Is it even possible that wild birds get special protection?
WHY PROIECr WILD BIRDS?
Sure, songbirds are pleasant to listen to. Seeing a group of birds crossing the sky is a nice
sight. More important, birds lhelp humans. _68_.SThis is especially important in urban
英语学科第7页(共8页)
areas, where plants may have difficulty growing. These birds also eat billions of insects, many of
which carry disease, damage trees, and destroy crops
MIGRATING BIRDS
Some birds that migrate across North America cross over major cities. 69_By
day, glass buildings reflect sky, trees, or both. Many birds get confused and crash rignt into the
buildings. The lighted buildings at night, though, may cause the most damage. Some birds migrate
after dark and fly low. They can be confused by-artificial light coming from buildings. As many as
1 billion birds die this way in the United States every year.
Bird-lovers have encouraged cities to devise methods to solve the problem. One way is to
help birds distinguish glass from open space. Methodically pasted images of birds on windows ac
as a warning to real birds.
PERMANENT RESIDENTS
You probably expect to see populations of pigeons in big cities. Believe it or aot, some
predator species have also made urban areas their home.
Probably the best-known of these species is the peregrine falcon. 70A. small
group of people refused to let that happen. The group raised babies born to captive birds. Then
they released the young birds into urban areas. The birds' chances of reaching adulthood were
actually greater than in the wild. With few enemies and plenty of rats and smaller birds to eat, the
falcons could really thrive
Because of such efforts, the peregrine falcon made a slow but steady comeback. By 1988, a
least thirty breeding pairs were living in several U.S. cities. Instead of nesting in trees or rocky
cliffs, they nested on bridges and on ledges of tall buildings.
