Artificial intelligence (人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.
AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition (识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals (罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing (网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.
AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers﹣by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don’t have this ability. Carmakers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is yielding (让路), it will lash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.
Service Robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.

One day last month, Antony Aumann, a college professor in the United States, was grading papers for his course. While he was reading the “best paper in the class, “a red ‘warning’ flag suddenly went up. Later, Aumann asked the student whether he had written the essay himself. The student shook his head. He admitted (承认) using ChatGPT, a chatbot that is able to answer questions as well as write emails, poems and articles.
Since artificial intelligence (人工智能) lab OpenAI released ChatGPT last November, the chatbot has enjoyed huge welcome. Students are using it to do their homework for them. All over the world, professors like Aumann are redesigning their courses in response to this. Some have decided to include more oral exams and handwritten papers. Gone are tasks like “write five pages about this or that.” Professors are instead designing questions that they hope will be too clever for chatbots. Some are asking students to write about their own lives.
Many schools, however, are unwilling to ban(禁止) the use of ChatGPT altogether. They are, instead, treating it the way they treat calculators. In the first place, they don’t believe a ban would be useful. Students will find ways to use ChatGPT if they want to. Moreover, chatbots are unlikely to be the last technological development. Rather than stay away from them, students and teacher alike should learn to make proper use of them. The University at Buffalo in New York, for example, has introduced a discussion of AI tools in its courses. The school is using it to teach students about being honest. It is also helping them to understand both the strengths and the weaknesses of chatbots.
Some students have started learning how to work alongside AI tools. Lizzie Shackney is a student at the University of Pennsylvania. She uses ChatGPT to quickly produce a large number of possibly useful ideas for her papers. She then thinks over these ideas and decides what to include in her papers and what not to include. The student always writes her papers herself. “With AI tools, I won’t have to spin my wheels,”she said. “But I am also not going to depend on them to do everything for me.”

A.to show the paper was well written B.to point out the main idea of the article
C.to show it may be written by ChatGPT D.to show the computer may catch virus
24.To prevent students using chatbot to help with homework, some professors ________.
A.design tasks like “write five pages about this or that”
B.only ask their students to hand in handwritten papers
C.design questions too clever for students to answer
D.design questions that chatbot can’t reply to easily
25.The main idea of Paragraph 3 is that ________.
A.it is necessary to keep students away from ChatGPT
B.it is important to help students use Chat GPT properly
C.it is wise to ban the use of Chat GPT at universities
D.it is necessary for universities to ban AI tools in class
26.The underlined “spin my wheels” in the last paragraph is similar to ________.
A.waste my time or effort B.waste my talent or youth
C.waste my power or space D.waste my money or energy

Computers may be able to help us in more ways. Recent research has showed a new computer program that can learn human emotions (情感).
Researchers asked a group of people to type (打字) two paragraphs from Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice in Wonderland. The people then chose an emotional state they felt while typing. Moods tested were joy, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, shame and guilt. Then the researchers put the text into the computer to study. Surprisingly, the computer was right 70 percent of the time in telling their emotional states. The most correct emotions it guessed were joy (87 percent) and anger (81 percent). The least accurate emotion the computer guessed was sadness (60 percent). The researchers found that the people were hardly typing when they were in a bad mood, which may explain the inexactness of the second result.
However, the findings could have great importance for artificial intelligence (人工智能), and it may allow computers to get along with us in a friendlier manner. “If we could build any system that is intelligent enough to communicate with humans—that is, it can identify users’ emotions and change its behavior accordingly, then using machines could be more effective and friendly.” the researchers wrote in study. For example, when looking for a movie online, perhaps a computer program could make suggestions for films that would match your mood. And as the researchers said, this kind of computer program could also help humans in a number of ways. First, with online teaching, emotionally intelligent computers could change its teaching style to help students learn better. Second, with online talking, doctors were able to tell the emotion of a patient.

C.Many of the numbers were ________ so we made a wrong decision.
D.Many professional tools and machines are used to avoid making ________ results.
28.How did the computer program learn human emotions?
A.By learning the researchers’ instructions.
B.By reading the words people typed on the computer.
C.By comparing them with other kinds of tested moods.
D.By learning the emotional states people chose when they typed.
29.How does the writer develop the last paragraph?
A.By listing facts. B.By offering explanations.
C.By giving examples. D.By comparing the results.
30.What’s the importance of the research result?
A.It helps people develop smarter machines.
B.It makes people speed up their typing speed.
