A
A Japanese telecom company has designed a robot that it says has emotions (情绪). But rather than run in fear from it, we’ve welcomed it into our homes: Pepper, the “emotional robots” sold out within a minute of going on sale.
Created by Aldebaran Robotics and Japanese mobile giant SoftBaok, Pepper went on sale to the general public in Japan on June 20. It is “the first humanoid (类人的) robot designed to live with humans,” Aldebaran says on its website. Pepper costs about $ 1,600. And like all good mobile products, there’s a $ 120 per month data fee, as well as an $80 per month damage insurance fee. According to a news report, Pepper can pick up on human emotions and create his own using a “multi-layer neural (神经的) network.” Pepper’s touch sensors and cameras are said to influence its mood, which is displayed on the tablet-sized screen on its chest.
Pepper will sigh when unhappy, and can go around your house recording your family’s daily activity. Aldebaran says Pepper can feel “joy, surprise, anger, doubt and sadness,” but it doesn’t say how strongly it can feel these emotions. What happens when Pepper is having a bad day? Will it, like many humans, become uncooperative? Will it ask for some time alone? What happens if it knows that its purpose in life is just to take part in small talk? Thankfully, Pepper is only about four feet tall, with roller balls instead of legs, so if it is angry with and even turns on its owners, you’ll be safe if you can make it upstairs.
Aldebaran says in reality, they’re probably quite a few years away from artificial intelligence that could create real emotions. Aldebaran wasn’t immediately able to tell when Pepper will be available out of Japan, but additional sales are scheduled for July after the first 1,000 units sell out. SoftBank currently uses the robots in its stores as greeters, and it plans to offer Pepper to other stores in the future. Hopefully “boredom” is not an emotion Pepper can feel.
17. According to the author, Pepper .
A. is very popular among customers
B. can not only run but also show fear
C. is going to be sold all over the world
D. can deal with many kinds of housework
18. How much do you need to pay for Pepper’s data and damage insurance fee each year?
A 80 dollars. B. 120 dollars.
C. 1,440 dollars. D. 2,400 dollars.
19. Pepper s height and roller balls are mentioned to .
A. introduce its appearance B. tell Pepper won’t get angry
C. show that safety isn’t a big problem D. explain robots have strong emotions
20. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Pepper cannot produce real emotions.
B. Pepper can feel joy, surprise and boredom.
C. Pepper will be sold in other countries next year.
D. Pepper is being used as waiters in some restaurants.
A 18. D 19. C 20. A
Pepper, the “emotional robot,” sold out within a minute of going on sale可知,这个情感机器人几分钟之内就卖掉了,所以Pepper是非常受消费者欢迎的。故选A项。
根据第二段中there’s a $120 per month data fee, as well as an $80 per month damage insurance fee.
Thankfully, Pepper is only about four feet tall, with roller balls instead of legs, so if it is angry with and even turns on its owners, you’ll be safe if you can make it upstairs.
Aldebaran says in reality, they’re probably quite a few decades away from artificial intelligence that could generate real emotions. 故选A项。
B
A study from 1976 tells us how and why relationships with our neighbors can be so good for us. Surprisingly to scientists at that time, results showed that connection with family members-even one's own children—had little influence on feelings of well-being or willpower. Meanwhile, friendships, especially those with neighbors, predicted lower levels of loneliness and worry, higher levels of feelings of usefulness and respect within the community.
The study suggests that acquaintance and friendship with neighbors are more effective at increasing well-being since they are based on nearness, common interests and lifestyle choices. The neighborhood relationships are also developed voluntarily. Family ties, on the other hand, are often characterized by a sense of responsibility, physical distance, and personal disharmony. Later studies confirm the importance of close friendships for people over 65, highlighting the particular importance of frequent connection.
More recent studies show that neighborly support is associated with better well-being for individuals in mid- to-late life. Data about neighborly relationships and general well-being from 1,071 adults aged 40-70 from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the US was collected in 1995, and again from the same individuals in 2005.
The study found that those who had little connection with neighbors at the time of both samples, as well as those who experienced a reduction in connection with neighbors over the years, experienced downward trends in well-being, as indicated by feelings of sadness, nervousness. restlessness, hopelessness and worthlessness.
It is important to note here the difference between friendship and neighboring or relationships with neighbors. While friendships are based on common affection, neighboring, at its core is an instrumental relationship that is catalyzed by nearness. But it doesn't have to be this way. Where neighbors are also close friends? the potential benefits are clear. While both friendship and neighboring are beneficial to well-being, they are most effective when the types of support and assistance from both coincide.
21. What does the 1976 study tell us?
A. The friendships between neighbors can last forever.
B. People ignore neighbors more than family members.
C. Neighbors influence people as much as their own children do.
D. Neighbors are more influential to people than family members.
22. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 2?
A. By analyzing data. B. By giving instructions.
C. By making comparisons. D. By following the order of time.
23. What determines neighborly relationships according to the text?
A. Nearness. B. Responsibility. C. Physical distance. D. A common life goal.
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why neighbors always help us. B. Why our neighbors are so important.
C. How neighborly support is available. D. How neighborly relationships develop well.
D 22. C 23. A 24. B

Many years ago, there lived a poor fisherman. His only companion was his dog. They might be seen walking on the white sandy beach.
The dog was always beside his master as the fisherman made his little boat ready to sail. When the man pulled out to sea each morning, the dog would run up on the high ridge (山岭). There he would sit and watch all day. The dog never moved until late afternoon when he saw the little boat return. Then he would race back to the shore to greet his master.
As the years went by, the fisherman grew older. So did the faithful dog. The fisherman still went out to sea. The dog still watched for his return, sitting on the high ridge.
One early morning in September, the fisherman was getting his little boat ready. All at once the dog began to bark. He circled around the fisherman and tugged at his trousers. The fisherman could not remember when he had seen his dog act so strangely. He patted the dog’s back, thinking the dog wanted to play. But nothing made any difference. Then the man climbed into the boat and sailed away. The dog went to his watching place, still barking.
There were other fishing boats out that morning. Suddenly the soft wind changed. It began to blow wildly. The fisherman’s boat was seized by the wind and whirled around The sky darkened. Rain began to fall.
“It’s a hurricane!” said the fisherman. The man thought of his dog at once. Had the dog left the ridge and run home? Or was he still sitting there? The fisherman tried to drive his boat and turn it towards the shore. Suddenly a great wave swept over his head and tossed the boat away (卷走).
The next morning, the hurricane was over. The families of the other fishermen ran to the shore. They watched for the return of the boats. They waited and waited, but no one returned. Then the people went slowly back to their homes and started a new life. As they rebuilt their village, no one gave a thought to the fisherman’s dog.
Several months later a group of villagers was out gathering sea grapes (海葡萄). They noticed what appeared to be the figure of a dog sitting high on the ridge. “Look” said one. “Isn’t that the old fisherman’s dog?” “How could it be, after all this time?” said another.
When the man reached the spot, he found only a rock — a rock shaped like a dog. But as soon as the people looked up again, they saw the stone dog. He just sat there on top of the ridge, waiting, waiting...
25. Why did the dog run up to the high ridge when the fisherman pulled out to sea every morning?
A. Because he didn’t want to go home alone.
B. Because he didn’t like walking on the white sandy beach.
C. Because he waited for his master on the high ridge.
D. Because he wanted to exercise on the high ridge.
26. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A. the reason why the dog acted so strangely
B. the situation that the fisherman was getting ready
C. the relationship between the fisherman and the dog
D. the reason that the fisherman didn’t want to play with the dog
27. What does the underlined word “figure” in Paragraph 8 mean?
A. gift. B. shape.
C. price. D. number.
28. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Stone Dog B. The Terrible Hurricane
C. The Stony Ridge D. The Little Stone

根据第四段“One early morning in September, the fisherman was getting his little boat ready. All at once the dog began to bark. He circled around the fisherman and tugged at his trousers. 【27题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“When the man reached the spot, he found only a rock — a rock shaped like a dog.(当这个人到达现场时,他只发现了一块石头——一块形状像狗的石头。)”可知,划线词所在句“Several months later, a group of villagers was out gathering sea grapes (海葡萄). They noticed what appeared to be the figure of a dog sitting high on the ridge. (几个月后,一群村民外出采集海葡萄。他们注意到似乎有一只狗的……坐在高高的山脊上。)”表达的是:他们注意到好像有一只狗的身形坐在高高的山脊上;figure在句中意为“身形,形状”,与shape同义。故选B项。
【28题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“When the man reached the spot, he found only a rock — a rock shaped like a dog. But as soon as the people looked up again, they saw the stone dog. He just sat there on top of the ridge, waiting, waiting...(当这个人到达现场时,他只发现了一块石头——一块形状像狗的石头。但当人们再次抬头时,他们看到了石头狗。他就坐在山脊上,等着,等着……)”可知,这篇文章主要讲述了一个渔夫和他的狗相依为命。每次渔夫出海捕鱼,狗都会跑到高高的山脊上等待主人。有一次,渔夫出海遇到飓风,再也没有回来,而他的狗化为了一块石头,永远坐在山脊上等待它的主人。A项“The Stone Dog(石狗)”能够概括文章主旨,为最佳标题。故选A项。

Many of us live with a roommate at some stage. Sometimes, there can be problems. Who hasn’t had an argument about whose turn it is to take out the rubbish or who should be the one to clear up after dinner? However, living with another person also comes with many benefits.
You know that there’s always someone else around, which can help you feel safer. There is always someone to talk to, so you never feel lonely. Besides these obvious benefits, there are some you may not notice. For example, we’re actually more likely to eat healthier food when living with others.
To examine the effect of living alone, Australian university researchers did much research and found that people living alone tended to eat less fresh food, which can have a significant negative effect on long-term health. However, those living with others generally benefited from a more varied diet compared to those living alone.
What could explain these findings? The researchers believe the social and cultural roles played by cooking, food preparation and eating may be important considerations. For example, those living with friends have someone else to go shopping with, and thus are likely to buy higher-quality fresh food regularly.
Cooking skills may be another factor. If people living alone find they do not have the knowledge required to prepare a particular dish or cook a certain food, they may fall back on ready-made, less healthy food. However, if they live with at least one other person, they may be able to ask for help.
In addition, people living alone can eat whatever they want at any time of the day or night. However, it’s helpful to have someone around who questions your decision to eat frozen pizza at 3 am. In other words, roommates can draw your attention to unhealthy routines.
So,if you now live alone and find yourself fighting a losing battle against poor eating habits, why not consider sharing a home with someone else? You could encourage one another on to greater health and well-being.
29. The author uses the first paragraph to ______.
A. introduce the topic of the text B. remind readers of their roommates
C. show the problems of living with others D. recall the experience of sharing a room
30. The second paragraph is mainly about _______.
A. The reasons for living with others B. the benefits of having a roommate
C. the way of dealing with a roommate D. the importance of communicating with others
31. The underlined phrase”fall back on” in Paragraph 5 means________.
A. hunt for B. cut down on
C. depend on D. give up
32. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To explain why roommate have arguments.
B. To tell readers every coin has two sides.
C. To encourage people to have a roommate.
D. To persuade people to develop healthy eating habits.
A 30. B 31. C 32. C

Staying Safe in Hot Temperatures
Hot weather kills hundreds of people every year. The World Health Organization estimates that from 1998 to 2017 more than 166,000 people died as a result of extreme heatwaves. That includes the more than 70,000 people who died during the 2003 heatwave in Europe.
____33____. There are steps you can take to stay safe during periods of very high temperatures. Many things can affect your body’s ability to cool itself during extremely hot weather. For example, when the wetness is high, body sweat will not dry as quickly. This restricts the body’s ability to release heat. ____34____.
Also, take note of nighttime temperatures. Experts say heat waves often become dangerous when the nighttime temperature does not drop much past the highest daytime temperature. ____35____. So, hot nighttime temperatures put great pressure on the human body.
____36____. Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar, for example, can weaken the body’s system for cooling itself.
On its website, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, explains that some people are at high risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses. A person’s age and weight play a part in surviving high temperatures. People over 65 and under 2 are especially at risk of becoming sick from heat.
Your general health is also a very important factor to consider. ____37____, you must move to a cool place, loosen your clothing, put a cool wet cloth on your body or take a cool bath and drink water.
Experts at the CDC say that “everyone should take these steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries, and death” when the weather is very hot.
A. If you have health problems
B. Since mental illness can bring greater risk
C. Some foods can also affect the body’s temperature
D. Yet, heat related deaths and sickness are preventable
E. Contact your local health department quickly, if possible
F. Our bodies repair themselves at night when we are sleeping
G. So, pay attention to not only the temperature but also the level of wetness
D 34. G 35. F 36. C 37. A

结合文章前一句“Experts say heat waves often become dangerous when the nighttime temperature does not drop much past the highest daytime temperature.”(专家们说,当夜间温度较白天最高温度不下降很多时,热浪往往变得危险。),可知应该在空格处描述原因,同时引出后一句“So, hot nighttime temperatures put great pressure on the human body.”(因此,炎热的夜间温度给人体带来了巨大的压力。)
结合后一句“Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar, for example, can weaken the body’s system for cooling itself.”(例如,酒精、咖啡因和糖会削弱身体自我冷却系统。)
根据空格前一句“Your general health is also a very important factor to consider.”(你的总体健康也是一个要考虑的非常重要的因素。)和后一句“you must move to a cool place, loosen your clothing, put a cool wet cloth on your body or take a cool bath and drink water.”(你必须搬到凉爽的地方,松开衣服,在身上放一块凉快的湿布,或者洗个冷水澡,喝水。) 故选A。

根据空前的feel the urge并结合句意可知,此处需要用动词不定式作后置定语,修饰the urge,故填to dance。
be filled with“充满了”,故填with。
分析句子结构可知,____9____ you get there和learn enough English to ask for directions之间缺少连词,根据句意可知,此处表示“在……之前”,引导时间状语从句。故填before。
根据句意可知,此处考查固定用法,have a nice holiday表示“玩得开心”,故填a。

Daniel got a job as a delivery man to work his way through college. His parents couldn’t save up all the money he needed to get into law school, so since he was 15, he would take summer jobs and find some other jobs between studies to earn extra cash.
The boy was determined and every day he would wake up at 5 a.m., summer or winter, riding on his old bike to deliver parcels. It wasn’t an easy job, especially during winter. Besides that, his old bike was slow, making things harder. But that wasn’t a problem for Daniel.
Daniel’s schedule was always the same every day and people in the neighborhood already knew him.
He called them by their names, and they would often wave and greet him as he passed.
It was a normal day and Daniel was delivering parcels as usual. “Morning, Daniel! Check out my brand-new mountain bike!” called out a man whose home Daniel visited frequently. “Morning, Mr. Warren! That’s a really fancy bike!” Daniel screamed back at him as he rode towards his first delivery. He couldn’t help imagining what it would feel like to own a bike like the one Mr. Warren had just shown him. “My deliveries would double with that” he thought longingly.
Suddenly, Daniel lost balance and fell on the road. He got up and leaned the bike against the wall to see what had happened. He found a nail stuck in the back tire (轮胎) and he unluckily had a flat tire.
As he turned around and tried to think of what to do, he saw something unusual. A strange man Daniel had never seen before furtively (鬼鬼祟祟地) looked around and placed a package under his jacket. “Hey!” Daniel shouted at the man. “Hey there! What are you doing? That’s not yours!” The man heard Daniel and started to run as fast as he could.
注意:
After having a look at his bike’s flat tire, Daniel quickly started to run after the man.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mr. Warren arrived on his new bike, and then helped pin (按住) the thief down.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
After having a look at his bike’s flat tire, Daniel quickly started to run after the man. “Stop! Thief!” Daniel cried out as he ran. The man was fast, but Daniel was faster. Daniel was gaining on the thief with every step he took. The desperate thief had to look over frequently to check the distance between them. Suddenly he tripped over a stone and fell. Daniel immediately caught him by the arm. The thief struggled to his feet, waving his fist toward Daniel in an attempt to escape. Daniel was holding the thief tight when he heard someone shouting “Here I come!”
Paragraph 2:
Mr. Warren arrived on his new bike, and then helped pin (压住) the thief down. Daniel told Mr. Warren what had happened and called the police. Shortly afterwards, a policeman arrived and took the thief away. When Daniel was about to leave, Mr. Warren stopped him and offered his new bike to Daniel and told him it was a gift for him. When Daniel tried to refuse such a generous gift, Mr. Warren insisted he take the bike, saying that it was actually a reward for Daniel’s bravery. Tears in his eyes, Daniel said, “Thank you so much! I’m glad to be of any help to you guys!”

A
A Japanese telecom company has designed a robot that it says has emotions (情绪).
A. 80 dollars. B. 120 dollars.
C. 1,440 dollars. D. 2,400 dollars.
19. Pepper s height and roller balls are mentioned to .

A study from 1976 tells us how and why relationships with our neighbors can be so good for us. Surprisingly to scientists at that time results showed that connection with family members-even one's own children—had little influence on feelings of well-being or willpower.
While friendships are based on common affection neighboring, at its core is an instrumental relationship that is catalyzed by nearness. But it doesn't have to be this way. Where neighbors are also close friends? the potential benefits are clear. While both friendship and neighboring are beneficial to well-being, they are most effective when the types of support and assistance from both coincide.
21. What does the 1976 study tell us?

Several months later, a group of villagers was out gathering sea grapes (海葡萄).
