She wanted to find young conductors at the beginning of their careers and make sure they had tools to enable them not to give up until they succeed. “It’s so important to train young talents and give them the opportunities to succeed,” she said, reflecting on founding the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition 33 years ago. That was why, she emphasized, the prize went beyond the cash award — which was a healthy £15,000 — and offered the winner the opportunity to assist the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) for a year. They could work with some of the world’s finest conductors and lay foundations for a successful conducting career. Flick was born Princess Donatella Missikoff. Since 1917, Flick has successfully built a career and reputation as an artist. She now organizes charitable foundations and project all over the world. With the Competition, she was motivated by finding more talents in unexpected places — before diversity and inclusion spread through different industries as new “buzzwords”. “One way to do this was to broaden the range for applications, so we opened up entries to conductors from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland in 2018. Since then, I’ve been very pleased to see conductors from those countries reach the list of competitors,” she said. “One of the major changes that I’ve been very happy to see is that more women are applying for the Competition now than when we started in 1990, and I hope this continues in future competitions.” In view of the fact that only four of the 20 conductors — that was 20 percent — who qualified for the 2023 competition were women, it was clear that a gender imbalance persisted. “I think we have a new generation of female conductors emerging, and I would deeply encourage them to apply to the Competition if they’re at the start of their careers,” Flick said, still hopeful. 4. Why did Flick found the Conducting Competition? A. To become famous. B. To continue her family tradition. C. To train the future stars of conducting. D. To promote the finest conductors’ careers. 5. How did Flick help young conductors? A. By introducing them to some world-class orchestras. B. By supporting them financially. C. By equipping them with conducting tools. D. By providing more opportunities for them. 6. What major change does the Conducting Competition bring? A. The range for applications is broadened every year. B. More females intend to take part in it now. C. Youths worldwide engage themselves in conducting. D. Males account for 80% of the qualified conductors. 7. Which of the following can best describe Flick? A. Kind and ambitious. B. Generous and brave. C. Sensible and creative. D. Energetic and productive. C Like most people, you have probably lost count of the number of perfect-looking shoes you have thrown away simply because the rubber soles (橡胶鞋底) are broken. In addition to the expense, it is also harmful to our environment. Now, thanks to a revolutionary self-healing 3-D printed rubber material, broken shoe soles may be a thing of the past. The magical polymer (聚合物) is developed by the researchers at the University of Southern California’s (USC) and the University of Connecticut (UConn) . The team, led by USC Assistant Professor Qiming Wang, created it through a process called photopolymerization, which uses light to solidify the liquid used to create 3-D printed plastic. The researchers found that adding the right amount of oxidant (氧化剂) to the liquid allowed the 3-D polymer to heal (愈合) without slowing down the hardening process. “When we gradually increase the oxidant, the self - healing behavior becomes stronger, but the photopolymerization behavior becomes weaker,” explained Wang. “There is competition between these two behaviors.” The team, who published the findings in the journal NPG Asia Materials on February 1st,2019, state that the repair time can be reduced by increasing the room temperature. “If you just put a broken shoe on a bench at room temperature, the rubber will heal itself in six to eight hours,” Wang said. “If you apply heat at maybe 60℃, that expedites the healing process to about two hours.” Given the material s huge potential it is not surprising to hear that Wang and his team have been approached by several shoe-making companies eager to be the first to use the technology, which is still in the early stages. Once perfected, the scientists also hope to apply the technique to hard plastics that can be used to create self-healing toys, electronics, vehicle parts, and, if Wang has his way, even tires. 8. How do the researchers make 3-D printed plastic self- heal? A. By changing the amount of light used. B. By raising the temperature at which it is used. C. By increasing the hardening speed of the liquid. D. By adding the proper amount of oxidant to the liquid. 9. What can be inferred from the text? A. The creation of 3-D printed plastic doesn’t need light. B. The surrounding temperature determines the speed of healing. C. Many shoe making companies got the right to use the technology. D. Throwing away broken shoe soles has been a thing of the past. 10. What does the underlined word “expedites” mean? A. Strengthens. B. Delays. C. Accelerates. D. Worsens. 11. Which of the following can be the best title of the text? A. Self - healing shoes may be in our future. B. 3-D printing technology makes a difference. C. Self - healing technology will serve many fields. D. A revolution of rubber soles has changed our life. D With an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe’s future leader in green hydrogen production to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution because this process relies on massive availability of zero-carbon electricity. Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn’t produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently created in this way. The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia (氨) and chemical products, all of which require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also can be used as a transportation fuel, which could one day transform the highly polluting shipping and aviation sectors. Spain’s large windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2,500 hours of sunshine on average per year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore green hydrogen production. “If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years, it’s in two countries, Spain and Portugal,” said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal Ambition, an industry platform bringing together 30 companies. “Hydrogen is the new oil.” Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global steel giant ArcelorMittal to design an end-to-end model for hydrogen production, distribution and supply at a competitive price. Criticism has centered on green hydrogen’s higher cost compared with highly-polluting “gray hydrogen” drawn from natural gas. Lepercq argues that solar energy produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete. Globally, Lepercq said, “Electricity is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is not electrified? ... You need to replace those fossil fuels. Not in 50 years’ time. You need to replace them now.” 12. Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain? A. It needs large amounts of sun and wind. B. It has an effect on heavy industries. C. It causes conflicts among countries. D. It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity. 13 What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain? A. Ideal geographical conditions. B. The support from government. C. Hydrogen production technology. D. Well-developed public transports. 14. What can be inferred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq? A. It is highly priced. B. It is easy to store. C. It is competitive. D. It is highly-polluting. 15. What is the passage mainly about? A. Spain manages to use zero-carbon electricity. B. Spain struggles to lead EU in heavy industry. C. Spain takes the lead in preventing air pollution. D. Spain replaces fossil fuel with green hydrogen. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Accept Tricky Feelings Imagine that you only felt so-called positive feelings like excitement, joy and safety. ____16____. Being human means we experience various emotions, even painful or uncomfortable ones. Accepting them is important and can improve your well-being. Do you notice uncomfortable feelings? When you accept that difficult emotions are normal and temporary, you’re often able to cope with them. If you allow yourself to feel angry, for example, that doesn’t mean you can throw things around or behave unkindly. Anita Garai, a well-being teacher and author of Being With Our Feelings, says that if we allow ourselves to feel painful emotions, including anger, it’s less likely these feelings will boil over and result in unpleasant actions. “____18____,” she says. “By listening to them, you can learn more about your needs and choose the best way to respond.” ____19____? Garai suggeststhe first step is to notice and examine the uncomfortable feeling in your body. “Where in your body can you feel it? Is it still or moving? Can you describe the movement?” she says. It may be that the feeling reminds you of a colour, shape, sound or texture. “By paying attention to the feeling in this way, it’s less likely that you’ll ignore it,” explains Garai. ____20____. I had gone out to visit my friend living in another county, but unfortunately I got stuck and was unable to drive further. I fully realized how dangerous this would be as there was not enough gas left in the truck for me to get through the deadly snowstorm. The situation got even worse in such a place without any houses in sight. I stayed in my truck, calling for help anxiously but the weak signal didn’t help me get connected. There was nothing I could do but wait. At midnight, there came a knock outside the truck. I opened the door and surprisingly found an old lady standing in the storm with just a thin coat, clearly not enough to survive the snowstorm. I invited her to get inside my truck at once. She told me in a weak voice that her name was Mary and her car broke down. She had walked a long way before finding my truck. Misfortune never came alone. Soon, we realized the air conditioner burned all the fuel in my truck and it was getting colder and colder inside the truck. Mary closed her eyes without saying a word, shaking in the corner. Considering Mary’s condition, I decided to take action right now. Luckily, the GPS of my truck still worked. And with the help of GPS, I noticed that a school was nearby. I decided to take shelter in the school. Since Mary was too weak to move, I carried her on my back, heading to the school. After ten minutes’ struggle in the snow, we finally arrived, but found the school gate locked. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I hesitated about what I should do. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, a policeman drove by and found the gate broken. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 汕头市潮阳实验学校2024届高三第一学期摸底考试试卷 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:130分) 注意事项: 1. 1. To launch this campaign, a series of activities such as fitness workshops and group exercises will be organized. We will invite professional fitness trainers to lead these activities, sharing their knowledge and skill sets, while providing participants with personalized training programs to help them get the most out of their efforts. In my opinion, this campaign is a great initiative, as it will not only benefit individuals' physical health but will also help improve their mental health. I wholeheartedly support this campaign and believe it will be a catalyst for a healthier and happier student community. Sincerely, Li Hua 第二节 (满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】Mary was still shivering and seemed to be in a worse condition. I had no choice but to find a way to break into the school. Fortunately, with the help of a snow shovel lying next to the gate, I managed to make it. I found the nearest classroom and laid Mary on one of the benches. I also found a pile of unused blankets and used them to wrap Mary up. I felt satisfied that I had done everything that I could to help her. He came in to investigate. When he entered the classroom, he found me and Mary still asleep, wrapped in blankets. He woke us up and asked if we needed any help. I gratefully accepted his offer to drive us to the nearest gas station. I filled up my truck and made sure it had enough fuel to get me to my destination safely. As I waved goodbye to the policeman, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky I was to have Mary’s unexpected appearance that night. Without her, I might not have been able to survive the dangerous snowstorm. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
