There are also more big wave events than ever before. A big wave is about four metres tall or more. When large waves reach the coast, they bounce back and run into new waves. The crash sends energy through the ocean floor, where it can be recorded by seismographs (地震仪). Those records allowed Bromirski to decide the strength and size of waves over a period of 90 years. Bromirski said he found the seismographic information by chance. Before the discovery, he said “it was almost impossible” to compare waves from the past with those from the present. It took a lot of work to put the information together. Much of the information was. on paper. Bromirski and his team of student researchers had to enter the information into a computer so they could study the information easily. The slow process took years. They found that the height of most waves in the winter along the California coast had grown by about 30 centimetres since 1970. Starting that year, waves of over 4 metres happened more often as well. Between 1996 and 2016, the large waves happened twice as often as they did from 1949 to 1969. 1970 is the year scientists believe the warming of the planet began to speed up. Bromirski says the new information shows that climate change is making ocean waves taller and stronger. That means they are more likely to harm the coast, roads and buildings. Bromirski said his research may be a warning that bigger and stronger waves are ahead. With more warming, sea levels will rise and waves will get stronger, causing flooding and more damage to land. The California coast has already been damaged by big waves in recent years. 8. What does the underlined phrase “bounce back” mean in paragraph 2? A. Go up. B. Move back. C. Crash out. D. Take over. 9. What can we learn from paragraph 2? A. Forms of sea waves near the coast. B. Ways the water moves to the shore. C. The way of recording sea wave strength. D. Difference between present and past waves. 10. Why did the researchers enter the information into a computer? A. To examine whether it is correct. B. To use it conveniently in research. C. To share it with other researchers. D. To make sure of information safety. 11. What does Bromirski think of the change in ocean water movement? A. It will cause more serious results. B. It will result in more heavy rain on land. C. It will make climate change for the worse. D. It will bring more risk to human activities at sea. B 9. C 10. B 11. 由文章第二段中“When large waves reach the coast (当大浪到达海岸时)”和“run into new waves (撞向新海浪)”可知,当大浪到达海岸时,它们会反弹回来,撞向新的海浪。 A. Go up上去;B. Move back后退;C. Crash out冲出去;D. Take over接管。 由文章第二段中“When large waves reach the coast, they bounce back and run into new waves. (当大浪到达海岸时,它们会反弹回来,撞向新的海浪。撞击将能量传送到海底,地震仪可以记录下来。这些记录使Bromirski能够确定90年来海浪的强度和大小。)”可知,从第2段学到记录海浪强度的方法。故选C。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段中“Bromirski and his team of student researchers had to enter the information into a computer so they could study the information easily. (Bromirski和他的学生研究团队必须将这些信息输入计算机,以便他们能够轻松地研究这些信息。)”可知,研究者将信息输入计算机是为了方便研究使用。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“Bromirski said his research may be a warning that bigger and stronger waves are ahead. With more warming, sea levels will rise and waves will get stronger, causing flooding and more damage to land. (Bromirski说,他的研究可能是一个警告,更大更强的海浪即将到来。随着气候变暖,海平面将上升,海浪将变得更强,导致洪水和对陆地的更多破坏。)”可知,Bromirski认为海洋水动力的变化可能会导致更严重的后果。故选A。 D Before the Internet age, critical thinking was the most important skill of people. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a famous psychologist, a more important skill is critical ignoring As researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with many eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can offer us advertisements producing profit (利润). So we are not customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva calls on us to learn the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers can control their information environment to reduce exposure (接触) to false information. According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which includes removing low- quality y et hard-to-resist (难以抵制的) information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes.’ Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-catching items are kept out of sight: Like dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to keep them out of sight at first! The next is to judge the reliability (可靠) of information, whose purpose is to protect you from false information. It can be realized by checking the source in the mainstream, which can be reliable. The last is: “never feed the trolls.” Trolls are some people who spread false information online to cause harm. Do not correct them, because they do not care about whether the information is correct. Annoying others is their goal. So, ignore their bad behaviour. By using the above critical ignoring skills, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding being harmed by those who try to control our attention, time, and minds. 12. What can we learn about the attention economy from paragraph 2? A. It offers more information. B. If offers depressing stories. C. It saves time for Internet users. D. It goes after profits from each click. 13. Why does the author mention dieters in paragraph 3? A. To explain the power of will. B. To prove the benefits of healthy food. C. To show the importance of environments. D. To discuss the quality of information. 14. What should we do to deal with Internet trolls according to the text? A. Review their aim. B. Turn a deaf ear to them. C. Correct their behaviour. D. Send hard facts to them. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. Strategies for Internet users to apply critical thinking. B. Reasons for critical thinking in the attention economy. C. Practising the skills of critical ignoring in the digital age. D. Increasing the benefits of critical ignoring on the Internet. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“As researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with many eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can offer us advertisements producing profit (利润). So we are not customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention.(正如研究人员指出的那样,我们生活在一个注意力经济中,互联网上的内容生产者在争夺我们的注意力。它们用许多引人注目的故事来吸引我们,而提供的有用信息却很少,这样所以他们可以为我们提供广告而产生利润。所以我们不是顾客而是产品,我们点击的每一个链接都是在销售我们的时间和注意力)”可知,注意力经济可以让我们接触到盈利性广告,并从我们的每次点击中寻求利润。故选D项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes. Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-catching items are kept out of sight: Like dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to keep them out of sight at first!(成功的节食者需要把不健康的食物远离他们的家。“同样,我们需要建立一个数字环境,让那些引人注目的东西远离我们的视线:就像节食一样,如果一个人试图依靠意志力不去点击引人注目的‘新闻’,他肯定会失败。”所以,最好一开始就把它们放在视线之外)”可推知,作者在第三段提到节食者,是为了强调我们需要建立一个让那些吸引眼球的东西远离我们的视线的数字环境,以此来表明环境的重要性。故选C项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Trolls are some people who spread false information online to cause harm. Do not correct them, because they do not care about whether the information is correct. Annoying others is their goal. So, ignore their bad behaviour.(喷子是一些在网上传播虚假信息以造成伤害的人。不要纠正他们,因为他们不关心信息是否正确。惹恼别人是他们的目标。所以,忽略他们的不良行为)”可知,对付网络喷子,我们最好对他们充耳不闻。故选B项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a famous psychologist, a more important skill is critical ignoring (批判性忽略).(但根据著名心理学家Anastasia Kozyreva的说法,在数字时代,一个更重要的技能是批判性忽略)”和第三段中“According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies.(根据Kozyreva的说法,批判性忽略包括三种策略)”可知,本文主要讨论了在数字时代,需要练习“批判性忽略”技巧。 Effective studying is vital in college, and many new college students quickly find that their former study habits need major adjustments. We thought there must be more to life than working, eating and sleeping every day.” The mom-of-three still can’t quite believe they’re actually doing it. After all, it happened so fast. She said, “We decided it at the end of June, sold our house in July, and then when August came around we bought the motor house and set off.” Despite (尽管) being anxious at first, with the family sometimes quarreling, Cheryl thinks the trip has helped strengthen family bonds. She said, “If we have an argument there is nowhere to hide. You can’t go into your room and be angry. It means it has to be dealt with there and then, and its taught us to be more open with each other as a family. Every day is quality family time. We couldn’t get that if we were back home with work, school and nursery.” 4. What does Cheryl think of the travel? A. It is too short. B. It is too pricey. C. It is filled with quarrels. D. It is worthwhile. 5. What is the purpose of the family trip? A. To honor Cheryl’s parents. B. To experience more about life. C. To prepare the kids for school. D. To give Jason a break from work. 6. What can we infer about the family? A They’re actually typical travelers. B. They become closer as family members. C. They have spent years preparing for the travel. D. They will hide away when an argument happens. 7. Which is the suitable title for the text? A. To travel is to live. B. Bad news travels fast. C. Adventure is out there. D. Travel makes a man wiser. C An ocean researcher, Peter Bromirski, at the University of California, San Diego, says waves’ have been getting bigger and stronger since 1970. A To examine whether it is correct. D Before the Internet age, critical thinking was the most important skill of people. Effective studying is vital in college, and many new college students quickly find that their former study habits need major adjustments.
