B Hem an Bekele is not your typical high school student.Rather than spending his free time playing video games or staring at his phone, this 14 year-old from Fairfax,Virginia was calling professors and conducting experiments, all to create a soap that could treat skin cancer, and to make it affordable for everyone who needs it.His work won him the grand prize in this year's 3M Young Scientist's Challenge,a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to solve everyday problems. Growing up in Ethiopia,Bekele found in pity that people working outside were likely to end up getting skin cancer.Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally was almost $40,000.Those shocking statistics really inspired him to create a more accessible solution. He started doing experiments and working on different things, and that tumed into his bar of soap as a project. A lot of his research and development started in his family's kitchen and in his basement. But as he reached the final of the competition,he realized that he did need to do a little bit more outside of just his house. So he reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and he got a lot of assistance. The number one person would be Deborah Isabelle, who helped him organize and structure his ideas during the finalist competition.Bekele said that he definitely couldn't have done that all by himself. Bekele's award-winning soap is a compound based bar of soap and it's charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The color of the soap is a bit of a dark type of white and it has a rough surface, which could be a good exfoliant(去角质剂).It does have a strong medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whole point of it is that even once you wash off the soaps, the medicinal parts will stay on your skin.It can activate the body's immune cells to defend cancer. Bekele won 25,000 prize money and he was going to use it to continue research. He said,"I still need a lot of resources to be able to conduct this research,so this money will definitely help me achieve it." 24.Why did Heman Bekele start working on creating the soap? A.Because he thought it was a fun project. B.Because he wanted to win a science competition. C.Because he found skin cancer treatment unaffordable. C.What chemicals the soap contains. D.How the soap is produced. 27.Which words can be used to describe Bekele according to the passage? A.Patient and talented. B.Friendly and ambitious. C.Cautious and generous. D.Caring and devoted. C Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every passing emotion,or more of a poker face, not showing what you are feeling?Scientists at Nottingham Trent University say that wearing your heart on your face, could actually give you a significant social advantage. The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh,a research fellow at NTU's School of Social Sciences, involving over 1,300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations.Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality.People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with different social partners, and even over time periods up to four months. The researchers say that facial expressiveness is linked to personality, with more agreeable individuals displaying more lively faces.Facial expressiveness can also translate into concrete social benefits. In a negotiation task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationship and smoothing over conflicts. Across the board, the results point to facial expressiveness serving an "affiliative ( function,"or a social glue that develops liking and smoother interactions. Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more"readable,"suggesting that a lively face makes one's intentions and mental states easier for others to decipher.Beyond frequency of facial movements, people who employ facial expressions more strategically to suit social goals, such as looking friendly in a greeting, are also more well-liked. The findings challenge the "poker face"common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous.Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one's face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. As the researchers conclude,"Being facially expressive is socially advantageous."So,the next time you catch yourself making lines on your forehead,or flashing a smile, know that your face just might be working overtime on your behalf. 28.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about conceming the study? A.Its impact. B.Its findings. C.Its limitations. D.Its significance. 29.What may facial expressiveness serve as in negotiation settings? A.A strategy to settle disagreement. B.A method to hide personalities. C.A tool to show personal quality. D.A way to frighten competitors. 30.What does the underlined word"decipher"in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Copy. B.Overlook. C.Remember D.Interpret. 31.What may the author advise based on the findings of the study? A.Leamning to be an open book. B.Always wearing a still face. C.Speaking out inner emotions. D.Forcing a smile through tears. 第3页共 D Nocturnal exposure to blue light containing short wavelength emissions(450-500 nm)-the kind of light produced by the screens of many devices raises blood sugar levels and increases sugar intake, according to a study performed on Sudanian grass rats. "Much of the artificial light we are exposed to comes from LED lights and screens, which emit high levels of blue light,"said Anayanci Masis-Vargas from the Universities of Strasbourg and Amsterdam and his colleagues.According to their study, retinal cells of the eye are sensitive to this blue light and directly convey information to areas of the brain that control appetite. In the study, the scientists exposed diurnal Sudanian grass rats to nighttime blue light(490 nm)and measured their food consumption and glucose tolerance the following day. "In order to better model human light exposure, the rats were diurnal, meaning awake during the day and asleep at night, rather than the typical nocturnal laboratory rats which are awake during nighttime hours,"the researchers explained. They found that after only one hour of nocturnal blue light exposure, glucose tolerance was changed in the rats,a warning sign of pre- diabetes. To investigate what happens with appetite control and food choice after exposure to blue light at night,in the follow-up study, the rats were given the option to choose among a nutritionally balanced food, water, pig fat,and sugar water. After the exposure to blue light, the study authors observed that the rats preferred sugar water and drank more of it that night than during the nights with no blue light exposure. As the experiment continued, the researchers noticed more exposure to blue light caused rats'heavier bodies as well. "Limiting the amount of time that we spend in front of screens at night is,for now,the best measure to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of blue light,"Masis-Vargas said."In case it is necessary to be exposed to devices at night,I would recommend the night mode features on the devices, which turn the screens more orange and less blue or the use of blue light filtering glasses that are already available in the market." 32.According to the study, noctural exposure to blue light will A.affect blood pressure B.influence appetite C.disturb the delivery of information D.decrease retinal cells of the eye 33.Why were diurnal rats used instead of nocturnal rats in the study? A.Their sleep model is simpler to follow. B.Their sugar intake is easier to measure. C.Their light contact is similar to that of humans. D.Their glucose tolerance is close to that of humans. 34.Which was NOT considered in the follow-up study? A.Food choice. B.Animal weight. C.Food consumption. D.Animal gender. 35.Which is the most effective way to lessen the harm of blue light according to Masis-Vargas? A.Upgrading phone mode. B.Changing the color of the screen. C.Restricting night screen time. D.Wearing blue light filtering glasses. 共5页 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 Lying awake for hours before falling asleep is a common problem.Even if you can finally fall asleep, taking too long to fall asleep can lead to too few hours of sleep altogether.36 So people having trouble falling asleep always wonder how they can sleep well. Parents know from experience that gentle music can help babies fall asleep.Science supports this, showing that children of all ages, from babies to elementary school children, sleep better after listening to comfortable music.Fortunately, children aren't the only ones who can benefit from gentle music before bedtime.37 Listening to music likely improves sleep for more than one reason.Music can promote sleep directly by affecting your physiology(生理机能)._38_Besides,.it can also promote sleep by becoming a bealthy bedtime habit. Many people can't fall asleep quickly because stressful and worrying thoughts keep them awake at night.By listening to music, the mind has something else to focus on.With time, the practice of listening to music at bedtime becomes more effective as the brain positively associates music with sleep. 39 Studies have looked at many types of music and playlists but there isn't a clear answer about the best music for sleep. What we do know is that researchers have typically used either a self-made playlist or one that has been designed especially with sleep in mind. One of the most important things on how music affects a person's body is their own musical preferences.40For those who don't want to design their own playlist, online music services have stepped in and usually offer playlists for sleep or relaxation. A.It can guarantee sufficient sleep. B.It's natural to wonder about the best type of music for sleep. C.The quality and quantity of our sleep become poor as we age.
