Phineas T Barnum is the best-known circus business owner of the nineteenth century. He excelled as a showman, and throughout his career in the entertainment business, he promoted many different forms of attractions.
Barnum’s first industry was as a newspaper owner. He also worked as a writer and publisher. His enduring fame, however, is as a showman. Barnum considered this to be his main talent and he never changed this view of his character.
T. Barnum’s entertainment interests covered museums, traveling dance troupes (团), and even the mid-century US tour by Jenny Lind, the Swedish singer. He was, by nature, a risk-taker, and usually gained success from the most unlikely enterprises.
Barnum was willing to adopt any tactic that publicized his businesses. His American Museum in New York included hoaxes and freaks (恶作剧和怪物), both human and animal. This was not unusual by the standards of the time, but even he felt the need to prove his hoaxes fair, as advertising tricks.
Barnum’s unbounded self-confidence meant he never doubted his ability to make a success of any business. He opened America’s first aquarium (水族馆) and opened a theater in New York that was the largest and most modern in the city. He aimed to change the public knowledge of theaters, and in this, he largely succeeded. He made theater-going respectable.
Determination and hard work featured majorly in the qualities that Barnum displayed, and he frequently spoke about the necessity of both. He believed success only came to those who worked for it and knew they had the self-determination necessary. He also stated the necessity of understanding the business that a person was running. Knowledge and experience counted for much in Barnum’s life, and he certainly knew the entertainment business.
Success in life, according to Barnum, could only be achieved when a person is in good health. He advised that getting healthy and maintaining a healthy body and mind would lead to happiness as well as success.
24. What did Barnum think was his most successful career?
A. A writer. B. A publisher. C. A showman. D. A newspaper owner.
25. What does the underlined word “tactic” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Media. B. Strategy. C. Support. D. Opportunity.
26. Why does the author mention Barnum’s success in opening the aquarium and theater?
A. To show Barnum’s firm beliefs in his own capacity.
B. To tell us chances are important for any business.
C. To explain what kind of business was successful.
D. To indicate how bad people’s life was at that time.
27. Which of the following can best describe Barnum and his business?
A. Eventful. B. Adventurous. C. Unsteady. D. Outstanding.

Recently, researchers at Yale did a groundbreaking study that found that parents had enormous power to reduce their child’s anxiety, even if the child didn’t do anything different.
The study involved 124 parents and their children, aged 7 to 14, who had been diagnosed with anxiety disorders. Half the children received 12 weekly sessions of cognitive(认知的)behaviour therapy(治疗). The other half received no therapy at all,but their parents received 12 weekly sessions to guide them on how to respond to anxiety in their children.
Parent therapy focused on helping parents reduce their accommodation behaviour, which are the behaviour that make anxiety more possible. These behaviour included parents supporting avoidance, over-comforting, changing the environment to avoid anything that might fuel anxiety, accommodating obsessive-compulsive(强迫症)behaviour(either by joining in or making way for them). For example,if a parent received loads of text messages a day from an anxious child, that parent gradually reduced the number of text messages he or she sent back to two or three. Parents of children who were refusing or avoiding school because of anxiety-driven stomachaches were taught to respond with something like,“I know you are feeling upset right now, and I know you will be okay,”before sending the child to school.
The results were remarkable. Children in both groups showed the same reduction in anxiety, regardless of whether they or their parents received suggestions. On top of this, the relationship between the parent and child was better in the group where only the parents received therapy. If you have stood with a child during anxiety, you would probably be way too aware of the sense of helplessness that can swamp them. When anxiety lays a heavy hand, it can understandably be tough for our children to open up to doing something different. What this research is telling us is that we don’t need them to. Even without involving their children, parents have enormous power to reduce anxiety in their children by changing the way they respond to anxiety.
28. What are the two therapies intended for?
A. One for children and one for parents.
B. Both for children’s cognitive behaviour.
C. Both for parents’ anxiety and behaviour.
D. Both for children with anxiety and bad deeds.
29. Why should parents reduce sent-back messages when receiving so many?
A. To let experts give some advice. B. To show their ignorance to them.
C. To reduce the children’s anxiety. D. To give children too much comfort.
30. What does the result of the research show to us?
A. Children’s ways to deal with anxiety are vital.
B. Parents’ proper behaviors are more important.
C. Children’s cognitive behaviors should be guided.
D. Children are short of experience in treating anxiety.
31. What should a parent do in treating children’s anxiety?
A. Change himself. B. Give advice quickly.
C. Take them to doctors. D. Get into their behaviors.
D
Imagine a world where nothing ends up in landfill. Instead, everything can be reused and recycled, creating products that never reach their “end of life”. According to a recent report by the Circle Economy Foundation, only 7.2% of all used materials are being cycled back to be reused and recycled without creating waste.
An Italian company aims to change this by creating furniture products made from a plastic-like biomaterial, which is fully organic and biodegradable (可生物降解的), and can be used over and over again. Using fruit peel, orange seeds and coffee grounds collected from businesses in Italy, the company can redistribute products to the same businesses for use in their offices, instead of furniture made from common plastic. If, by mistake, any of the material ends up in the ocean, it doesn’t produce any microplastics.
Each product is made through a four-step process. First, the food waste is dried and crushed into a very fine powder. Then, the powder is mixed with a biodegradable plastic alternative known as polyhydroxybutyrat (PHB), with the fruit waste making the PHB more study (坚固的). The material is then turned into a filament (细丝) and, using a spool, put into a 3D printer.
Because a lot of food waste would be buried and incinerated in the landfill, which would produce lots of carbon dioxide, Reusing fruit peel and coffee grounds decrease carbon dioxide from the production of plastic, according to the director of operations in the company. He adds that the biomaterial is as sturdy as wood, and won’t begin to break down unless it’s touched by water, bacteria or acidity.
Despite its eco-friendly benefits, the biomaterial is expensive. It costs probably six times more than common plastic, and it is a very difficult and expensive process, so this is why many companies aren’t doing it.
However, the director is hopeful that in a few years, as-more consumers and businesses are forced to face the damage that unsustainable plastic is doing to the planet, the biomaterial will be much more widely used. “We really believe this is the material of the future,” says the director. “Little by little, a step at a time.”
32. What is a problem faced by the current world according to paragraph 1?
A. Pollution is becoming milder. B. The rate of recycling is too low.
C. Plastic poses a threat to the ocean. D. New material needs to be improved.
33. What do we know about the biomaterial?
A. It is of benefit to the environment. B. It is cheaper than common plastic.
C. It is given a welcome by businesses. D. It has gradually replaced common plastic.
34. What does the underlined word “incinerated” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Damaged. B. Burned. C. Selected. D. Recovered.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. New Material: One Way To Regain Fruit Peel
B. From Landfill To Furniture: The Journey Of Furniture
C. Sustainable Material: The Future Of Eco-Friendly Furniture
D. Italian Businesses Using New Strategies To Manage Industrial Waste

I was born into a poor family from a small Indian village where we had no college, or university. After completing Grade Ten, my father came to me with some bad news. . .
“Son, I’m sorry. I won’t be able to pay any more of your educational expenses.”
I was the fourth and youngest son in the family. The family expenses had become too much for my father’s small wage to handle. Not having money for my education worried me. I laid my head down that night, wondering what my future held in store. The words of my teacher came to me, “Nawaz, you must try and find another way for your future. Look at me! I grew up as a poor boy from the village. I struggled, I worked hard and I went to the city. You must find a way and never give up. ”
I heard Karachi was a city of opportunity for poor people due to lots of small jobs. I decided to move to the city to get a job, so I could save up and pay for my education.
On a busy street not far from where I stayed, I found a job in a small restaurant. I waited on tables, cleaned floors, and washed dishes. I slowly saved enough money for my college admission fee. After that, I studied by day and by night and on weekends I worked at the restaurant. I was tired but determined to complete my education.
One day Mr. Jatin started asking me questions. “Where are you from?” “What are you doing here?” “Why are you working here?” He came to the restaurant for a cup of tea regularly in the afternoon, so the waiters were all familiar with him. I politely answered his questions about my situation.
“Mmm, I see,” Mr. Jatin nodded. “I’ve watched you work hard. And I’d like to pay for all your college fees. You can quit your job and focus on your studies. ”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I couldn’t believe what I had just heard.

Dear Peter,
I’m writing to express my sincere apology for the accidental damage to the English classic Gone with the Wind you kindly lent me.
Yesterday evening I was absorbed in the book when I carelessly knocked down the cup, the hot water pouring over the book. I was upset that the whole book was in bad shape. Knowing how precious the book is to you, I’m terribly sorry for any inconvenience caused.
I expect to make it up to you by replacing the book with a new copy. I’ve purchased one online, which will be sent to you in 3 days. I hope this unfortunate incident won’t affect our friendship. Please accept my heartfelt apology.

第二节
Paragraph 1:
I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. My heart was filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and profound gratitude. I stood there, stunned for a moment, my eyes wide with astonishment. I thanked Mr. Jatin repeatedly, unable to contain my excitement. With his support, I could finally focus entirely on my studies without the burden of financial worries. I worked even harder, determined not to disappoint him and to make the most of this precious opportunity.
Paragraph 2:
Having got a well-paid job after graduation, I realized it was time to pay back. I expressed my appreciation in the most heartfelt way possible, emphasizing how his kindness had transformed my life. I decided to help other students in need, just as he had helped me. I set up a scholarship fund to support those who struggled like I once did. I was acutely aware of the immense value of a helping hand in times of difficulty and was eager to pass on the kindness and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
