One of the greatest tests of a parent's patience comes at night when you trying to get your
children to fall asleep. You know you need to rock them, stroke their backs or just keep a
comforting hand on them until they nod off. But that time is playing a zero-sum game(零和游
戏)with your own need for sleep and something else you need to do work, zone out on Netflix or
just enjoy the quiet after the kids have gone to sleep.
When my older daughter was just a baby, I figured out a way to control my impatience: I'd
count to 100, along with the slow back-and-forth sway or the calm and steady strokes of her
back. It gave me the light at the end of the tunnel that almost always did the trick. My
impatience would die down because I knew that I'd reach the goal.
The result was surprising. By not thinking over the activities waiting for me, I focused on
my daughter instead. The numbers from 1 to 100 became the calm breath. I couldn't hold
complex thoughts on the top of counting, so deeper emotions surfaced, specifically love and
appreciation of the small person I was holding and touching. I was less likely to get pulled away
by unnecessary streams of thoughts and soon began to deeply enjoy these moments.
My daughter benefited from the extended touch as well. Science shows that the physical
touch releases three chemicals in our brain associated with emotional and physical health
benefits. These chemicals promote feelings of happiness and well-being, and increase pleasure
while regulating mood and relieving anxiety. By holding and stroking our children, we're
conveying safety and trust, relieving stress and activating(激活)our bodies' special nerves. This
is what actual bonding with our child looks like.
4
My daughter is 11 years old now, and I still continue this nighttime ritual(惯例): Give her
comforting and loving strokes and frequent hugs, maintaining a physical connection.
24.What probably causes parents to be extremely impatient at night?
A. Staying up late for extra work. B. Making their children fall asleep.
C. Facing too much housework. D. Searching for information online.
25.What happened to the author when he was counting numbers?
A. He got completely lost in thought.
B. He thought of traveling through the tunnel.
C. He came to realize his deep love for his child.
D. He was constantly interrupted by other thoughts.
26.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Advantages of the physical touch.
B. Ways to calm ourselves down.
C. Benefits of keeping a good mood.
D. Roles of special chemicals in brains.
27. What could be the best title for the text?
A. The challenge for children to fall asleep
B. The balance between family and career
C.A solution to conveying my impatience
D.A night routine to bond with my daughter

A new study focused on birds examines how the movements of rivers in the Amazon have
contributed to that area's exceptional biological diversity. The research team, led by the
American Museum of Natural History, found that as small river systems change over time, they
spur the evolution of new species. The findings also reveal previously unknown bird species in
the Amazon that are only found in small areas next to these dynamic river systems, putting them
at high risk of extinction.
The lowland rainforests of the Amazon River basin harbor(藏匿) more diversity than any
other ecosystem on the planet. It is also a globally important biome(生物群落)containing about
18 percent of all trees on Earth and carrying more fresh water than the next seven largest river
basins combined. Researchers have long wondered and hotly debated how the Amazon's rich
biodiversity arose and accumulated.
“Early evolutionary biologists like Alfred Russel Wallace noticed that many species of
primates and birds differ across opposite riverbanks in the Amazon,” said the study's lead author
Lukas Musher." Moreover, accumulating geological evidence has suggested that these rivers are
highly dynamic, moving around the South American landscape over relatively short time periods,
on the order of thousands or tens of thousands of years.”
To investigate how the movement of rivers across the landscape has influenced the
accumulation of bird species in the Amazon, the researchers sequenced the genomes(基因组)of
six species of Amazonian birds.
Because these rivers move around the landscape at different time scales, their movements
can have varying outcomes for bird species: when river rearrangements occur quickly,
populations of birds on each side can combine before they've had time to differ; when river
changes happen slowly, species have a longer time to diverge from one another.
28.What does the underlined word “spur” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Stimulate. B. Renew. C. Pursue. D. Interrupt.
29.What have researchers debated on?
A. What the Amazon's biodiversity indicates.
5
B. How the Amazon's biodiversity was formed.
C. Whether the Amazon has the richest biodiversity.
D. Why Amazon bird species are at risk of distinction.
30.What can we conclude from Lukas Musher's words?
A. There are six species of American birds.
B. Rivers move very slowly in South America.
C. Most species differ across opposite Amazon riverbanks.
D. River movement may lead to the Amazon's biodiversity.
31.What has influenced the change of bird species in the Amazon?
A. The location of river movement.
B. The populations of birds.
C. The speed of river movement.
D. The amount of the genomes.

Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term
“pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like
someone who is working hard- he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to
push on late into the night- but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she's
doesn't actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen on must college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there
was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used
to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.
The roommate who flips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is
pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours,
these students are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the
task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they’re
pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work- it’s how they've always done it, and it's
how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way.
Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only
wastes time, but it's also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work
done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes
that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per
time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success,
consider the following simple formula (公式): work accomplished = time spent × intensity of
focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something
by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand,
increases intensity in order to use less time.
32.Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?
A.Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B.Mike is sitting at a study lounge in preparation for a final exam quietly.
C.Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
D.Alice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.
33.Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that.
A.they want to spend more time on study
6
B.they are eager to follow their friends' way
C.they have got used to their study approach
D.they are unaware of their pseudo-working
34.What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Possible B.Best C.Least D.Accurate
35.What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?
A.The length of time on study counts.
B.Concentration plays a key role in study.
C.Getting work done quickly means everything.
D.Effective study approach is very important.
第二节 七选五(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
We are all social emotional beings and throughout our lives, we will continue to shape our
behaviors and relationships. However, for lifelong well-being, the development of social
emotional skills should be shaped wisely as a child opens its eyes to the world. Here are some
strategic actions that will help you guide your child in improving their social emotional learning
skills.
36 If they are crying, tell them "you look sad" or "it looks like you are mad right
now.” This way you can reflect their emotions to them with words and help them understand and
express their emotions too.
Approve your children's feelings. Instead of saying "Stop shouting and calm down, it's not a
big deal" try to say "I know you are really angry right now but we can talk about it." 37
Give your kid some space and let them experience uncomfortable feelings. Everyone feels
alone or bored sometimes. 38 This will help them tolerate disturbing feelings and
situations going forward.
Accept emotions and correct behaviors. It's okay to feel angry sometimes. Eventually, we
need to feel that anger in some specific situations. 39 Teach your children that the feeling
is normal, but they shouldn't be screaming loudly in a public area just because they are feeling
an emotion as this may make other people uncomfortable.
Support other cognitive skills. 40 Scientific educational brain games apps developed
by academicians like those at MentaIUP are reliable and beneficial sources to improve cognitive
(认知的)skills.
Every parent should keep in mind that all kids can shape and develop their social and
emotional skills differently. Trying to find ways that suit your kids' needs, interests and learning
styles is always a better solution than blaming yourself or the kids.
A. Cognitive skills can only be acquired from classroom learning.
B. Define and put into words your children's emotions.
C. However, it is never acceptable to show behaviors.
D. Teach them how to handle those feelings instead of avoiding them.
E. This way you can show them that it's sometimes okay to have big feelings.
F. Social emotional learning also improves students' attitudes towards school.
G. Improving mathematical and problem-solving skills will also support children's social
emotional development.

When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from
his classmates. They had two hands, but he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des
Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? "He actually told us that he
was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother, Cortney Lewis. "That really hurt
him." Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers
to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story
about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader from Washington middle school, Iowa. The boy, then 14,
had become an Internetstar after posting videos of his slam dunk(篮), and, like Jayce, he was
missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after
another.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for
Jayce—he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed
just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already
reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with
Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence.
Paragraph 1:
A few days later, the good news that Trashaun accepted the invitation to meet Jayce came.
