These days, streaming (流播) is straighter than ever. If you have a newer TV, all you have to do is select one of the built-in apps and start watching. You have more choices with devices such as an Apple TV, Netflix or Hulu, and you don’t have to be a tech expert to operate them.
Netflix
The granddaddy of streaming built a dynasty on wonderful shows popular with people, like Friends and Grey’ Anatomy. Then Netflix went all in on award-winning and fan-favorite originals (原创) such as House of Cards. Now it’s also the go-to for comedy specials with the likes of Jim Gaffigan and more, making it vital to stand-up fans.
Price: $6.99/month with ads; $15.49/month ad-free
Hulu
Once little more than Netflix’s replacement, Hulu is coming for top billing. Since Disney bought the streamer in 2019, it has turned Hulu into a giant. Go for Hulu’s Live TV and you’ll get 95-plus channels including the big networks, ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox.
Price: $7.99/month with ads; $17.99/month ad-free; $26.99/month for Live TV
Apple TV+
Apple’s is the only major service with original programming and no ads. That means no list of old shows to binge-watch, only the new cutting-edge series and films produced by Apple Studios that tend to cap best-of year-end roundups, including Ted Lasso.
Price: $9.99/ month

A young family who has never camped in their life have sold everything they own to start a tour of Europe in a motorhome. Cheryl, 33 and Jason, 28, sold their house, quit their jobs and ditched (放弃) a normal life for a year on the road.
With their eldest daughter Flora, five, just a year away from starting school, the couple decided it was time to go on a family adventure across the world. Cheryl teaches Flora while they travel to prepare her for school next year. The family, which also include their four-year-old daughter Elsie, son Archie and dogs Poppy and Angus, have been on the road for a period.
Cheryl said, “nobody would describe us as typical travelers. We’d never even been camping before. We talked for a long time about wanting to see different parts of the world, but we never actually thought we were actually going to. Our eldest child is due to start school this August, so we put it off by one year. We thought, ‘if we don’t do it this year, we may never will.’ My mom and dad died this year and after that I started to feel life is too short. We thought there must be more to life than working, eating and sleeping every day.”
The mom-of-three still can’t quite believe they’re actually doing it. After all, it happened so fast. She said, “We decided it at the end of June, sold our house in July, and then when August came around we bought the motor house and set off.”
Despite (尽管) being anxious at first, with the family sometimes quarreling, Cheryl thinks the trip has helped strengthen family bonds. She said, “If we have an argument there is nowhere to hide. You can’t go into your room and be angry. It means it has to be dealt with there and then, and its taught us to be more open with each other as a family. Every day is quality family time. We couldn’t get that if we were back home with work, school and nursery.”
4. What does Cheryl think of the travel?
A. It is too short. B. It is too pricey.
C. It is filled with quarrels. D. It is worthwhile.
5. What is the purpose of the family trip?
A. To honor Cheryl’s parents. B. To experience more about life.
C. To prepare the kids for school. D. To give Jason a break from work.
6. What can we infer about the family?
A. They’re actually typical travelers.
B. They become closer as family members.
C. They have spent years preparing for the travel.
D. They will hide away when an argument happens.
7. Which is the suitable title for the text?
A. To travel is to live. B. Bad news travels fast.
C. Adventure is out there. D. Travel makes a man wiser.
C
An ocean researcher Peter Bromirski, at the University of California, San Diego, says waves’ have been getting bigger and stronger since 1970. There are also more big wave events than ever before. A big wave is about four metres tall or more.
When large waves reach the coast, they bounce back and run into new waves. The crash sends energy through the ocean floor, where it can be recorded by seismographs (地震仪). Those records allowed Bromirski to decide the strength and size of waves over a period of 90 years. Bromirski said he found the seismographic information by chance. Before the discovery, he said “it was almost impossible” to compare waves from the past with those from the present.
It took a lot of work to put the information together. Much of the information was. on paper. Bromirski and his team of student researchers had to enter the information into a computer so they could study the information easily. The slow process took years.
They found that the height of most waves in the winter along the California coast had grown by about 30 centimetres since 1970. Starting that year, waves of over 4 metres happened more often as well. Between 1996 and 2016, the large waves happened twice as often as they did from 1949 to 1969.
1970 is the year scientists believe the warming of the planet began to speed up. Bromirski says the new information shows that climate change is making ocean waves taller and stronger. That means they are more likely to harm the coast, roads and buildings.
Bromirski said his research may be a warning that bigger and stronger waves are ahead. With more warming, sea levels will rise and waves will get stronger, causing flooding and more damage to land. The California coast has already been damaged by big waves in recent years.
8. What does the underlined phrase “bounce back” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Go up. B. Move back. C. Crash out. D. Take over.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Forms of sea waves near the coast.
B. Ways the water moves to the shore.
C. The way of recording sea wave strength.
D. Difference between present and past waves.
10. Why did the researchers enter the information into a computer?
A. To examine whether it is correct.
B. To use it conveniently in research.
C. To share it with other researchers.
D. To make sure of information safety.
11. What does Bromirski think of the change in ocean water movement?
A. It will cause more serious results.
B. It will result in more heavy rain on land.
C. It will make climate change for the worse.
D. It will bring more risk to human activities at sea.
D
Before the Internet age, critical thinking was the most important skill of people. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a famous psychologist, a more important skill is critical ignoring (批判性忽略).
As researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with many eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can offer us advertisements producing profit (利润). So we are not customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva calls on us to learn the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers can control their information environment to reduce exposure (接触) to false information.
According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which includes removing low- quality y et hard-to-resist (难以抵制的) information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes.’ Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-catching items are kept out of sight: Like dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to keep them out of sight at first!
The next is to judge the reliability (可靠) of information, whose purpose is to protect you from false information. It can be realized by checking the source in the mainstream, which can be reliable.
The last is: “never feed the trolls.” Trolls are some people who spread false information online to cause harm. Do not correct them, because they do not care about whether the information is correct. Annoying others is their goal. So, ignore their bad behaviour.
By using the above critical ignoring skills, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding being harmed by those who try to control our attention, time, and minds.
12. What can we learn about the attention economy from paragraph 2?
A. It offers more information. B. If offers depressing stories.
C It saves time for Internet users. D. It goes after profits from each click.
13. Why does the author mention dieters in paragraph 3?
A To explain the power of will. B. To prove the benefits of healthy food.
C. To show the importance of environments. D. To discuss the quality of information.
14. What should we do to deal with Internet trolls according to the text?
A. Review their aim. B. Turn a deaf ear to them.
C. Correct their behaviour. D. Send hard facts to them.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Strategies for Internet users to apply critical thinking.
B. Reasons for critical thinking in the attention economy.
C. Practising the skills of critical ignoring in the digital age.
D. Increasing the benefits of critical ignoring on the Internet.
