It takes a little skill to do this experiment, but the result is truly surprising.
What do you need?
√ Several rubber balloons.
√12-inch bamboo skewers(竹
签).
√ Liquid soap(洗手液).
Step 1
Blow up a balloon, let some of the air out of it, and then tie it closed with a string. If there is no string, just make a knot with the mouth of the balloon. Do not inflate the balloon completely!

Rub Liquid soap over the skewer from point to end
Step 3
Gently twist(搓抢)and push the skewer into the balloon near the knot. If the balloon pops, go back to Step 1.

When the skewer is in the balloon, slowly twist and push it through the thick part of the balloon. The tip of the skewer should pass completely through the balloon.
What will happen?

The teen years are an exciting time for girls, but these years can also be filled with worries and struggles. Parents really care for them, even if they don’t always act like it. They need your love, guidance, and support each day to help them become healthy and happy.
With the busy lives we lead today how can you do this?
Spend time with your daughter. Set a good example to your daughter. Eat right, exercise, deal with stress in healthy ways, and don’t use drugs (毒品), alcohol (酒), or cigarettes.
Try to find a good balance between work and fun in your own life. This will show your daughter that she can have balance in her life.
Teach her good values and a sense of responsibility (责任). Then trust her to make good choices.
Set rules with them. Setting fair rules can help girls keep away from social settings where they can’t solve.
It’s normal for a girl to want to try new things. When your daughter is angry with you, she may make poor choices. Turn her mistakes into lessons, show her you still love her, and point out the good thing she does. Teach her not to be ashamed of having a problem with stress, grades, weight, drugs, or alcohol. Even though you might feel upset and tired at times, everything you do will make a difference in your daughter’s life and she will thank you!

When you first meet Meggie, you may think she’s strange. She often tells people which word “tastes” good and who has a “delicious” name. But she’s not crazy. She has synesthesia (伴生感觉、通感), something only one in 2,000 people has.
People who have synesthesia experience the world differently. For some people, different words “taste” differently, for some, numbers or letters have colors, and for some, music “touches” parts of their bodies. Many of them experience more than one kind of synesthesia, while some have just one, like Meggie.
Each of them has their own experience—two people with synesthesia may both “feel” music, but they almost never feel the music in the same way. For example, one may feel the music of the violin lightly brushing his face; the other may feel it on her ankle (脚踝). And one’s experience of synesthesia is always the same. If they see the number 5 in the color blue, then 5 is blue every time they see it.
There’s one thing about synesthesia: it can’t be “turned off”. If you have synesthesia, you’ll experience it all the time. Meggie once met a guy and his name made her think of the taste of bad eggs. He was a fun guy, but after thinking about his name all night, she felt too sick to be friends with him. Even so, Meggie, like most people with synesthesia, still likes this “gift” because that’s what makes her different.
48. What do you learn about Meggie from the first paragraph?
A. She has a strange name. B. She is a good person. C. She is a crazy person. D. She is special in a way.
49. Why did Meggie stop being friends with the guy?
A. He often played jokes on her. B. He enjoys eating bad eggs.
C. She couldn’t stand his name. D. She did not like his gift.
50. Which of the following might be said by Meggie?
A. “The sound of drums touches my back.” B. “The name Shakespeare tastes like an apple.”
C. “The number zero is in bright purple.” D. “The music of the violin lightly brushes my face.”
51 Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?
A. People who have synesthesia can always experience it.
B. People who have synesthesia all like their special “gifts”.
C. People who have synesthesia have their own experiences.
D. People who have synesthesia experience the world in different ways.
D
Most crickets (蟋蟀) live in the warm places of the world, but one species (物种)—the lava cricket (熔岩蟋蟀) makes its home in one of the most unfriendly environments on the earth: volcanoes (火山), where the air is not clean and temperatures are unreasonably high. Shortly after a volcano breaks out, this kind of cricket suddenly appears. They are only found in Hawaii, where the locals have known about them for centuries, but researchers know very little about them.
Scientists find the lava cricket to be a really unusual example of a pioneer species. Pioneer species are the plants or animals which are the first to live in the places that were once full of life but became poor because of sudden changes to the environment. The most common pioneer species are simple plants like mosses that turn rock into the soil. This soil allows more plants to grow there and the place slowly begins to recover.
But where do lava crickets fit in this cycle? And more importantly, how do they live where no other life exists (存在)? These questions about lava crickets have caught researchers’ attention for many years. What’s more, lava crickets have something different that makes them even less suitable to live in hard conditions. Since they don’t have wings like other species of crickets, they can’t move quickly from place to place. Their lack (缺少) of wings also makes it more difficult for males to chirp or sing in order to find a female partner.
A scientific team from the University of Minnesota has set up a research station at one of Hawaii’s most active volcanoes, Kilauca. The team will study the lava cricket to find out what makes it such a natural pioneer species. Whatever they discover, their research will certainly provide more interesting facts about the life cycle of these special crickets.
52. What makes lava crickets special?
A. Their feeding habits. B. How they protect themselves.
C. Their living environment. D. How they communicate with each other.
53. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. What a pioneer species is. B. Where to find lava crickets.
C. How pioneer species are different. D. Why there’s no research on pioneer species.
54. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the study from the University of Minnesota?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Curious. D. Hopeful.
55. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a special pioneer species. B. To show the importance of pioneer species
C. To describe the differences between crickets. D. To explain the challenges lava crickets are facing.

When I studied at the Overseas Family School in Singapore, we held an activity called MAD Week in early April. “MAD” stands for “music, art and drama”. It is like a kind of art festival for students to perform themselves in front of people and enjoy the magic of art.
At the beginning of MAD Week, we had to wear a hat to school. To my surprise, most of the students made creative hats by themselves. Some girls chose to work as a team and wore hats that looked like ice cream. One boy made a really tall hat that he could hardly wear! As for me, I used paper, feathers and even candies to make my hat creative.
I joined the “MAD Hat Parade”, too. Groups of students and teachers walked with their fantastic hats. It was great fun taking pictures with them, and I was so glad to have a “MAD Hat Day” like this. It’s really a good way for students to show their creative ideas and be interested in the arts.

Why aren’t students getting enough sleep? Most students have one of the following reasons: too much homework, a mobile phone or a computer in their bedrooms. So many students can’t fall asleep before 11:00 p.m. But they have to get up early for school the next day.

The teen years are an exciting time for girls, but these years can also be filled with worries and struggles. Parents really care for them, even if they don’t always act like it. They need your love, guidance, and support each day to help them become healthy and happy.
With the busy lives we lead today, how can you do this?
Spend time with your daughter. Set a good example to your daughter. Eat right, exercise, deal with stress in healthy ways, and don’t use drugs (毒品), alcohol (酒), or cigarettes.
Try to find a good balance between work and fun in your own life. This will show your daughter that she can have balance in her life.
Teach her good values and a sense of responsibility (责任). Then trust her to make good choices.
Set rules with them. Setting fair rules can help girls keep away from social settings where they can’t solve.

Turn her mistakes into lessons, show her you still love her, and point out the good thing she does. Teach her not to be ashamed of having a problem with stress, grades, weight, drugs, or alcohol.
51. Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?
A. People who have synesthesia can always experience it.
B. People who have synesthesia all like their special “gifts”.
C People who have synesthesia have their own experiences.
D. People who have synesthesia experience the world in different ways.

Pioneer species are the plants or animals which are the first to live in the places that were once full of life, but became poor because of sudden changes to the environment.
