Martin is a high school student who enjoys the friendship with his classmates, but sometimes he wonders what true friendship really is. One day, he expressed his confusion to his mom, who suggested that he organize a team-building activity to explore the real meaning of friendship.
Martin’s mom suggested that he organize an activity at school that would require teamwork and joint support. His mom told him he would get a new bike he always wanted as a prize after understanding the meaning of friendship. Martin thought this was a great idea and decided to talk to his teacher about it. His teacher was very supportive and gave him some valuable advice. With the teacher’s guidance, Martin began planning the event. He chose a weekend and invited his classmates to participate. He carefully designed the activity, preparing various challenges to ensure everyone could get involved. He explained the rules, including how to divide tasks, communicate effectively, and support each other when facing challenges. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and how to build trust and cooperation during the activity.
On the day of the event, Martin and his classmates moved around the campus, searching for hidden markers. They were divided into several groups, each assigned different tasks. Some had to solve puzzles, while others had to complete physical challenges. Some tasks required close cooperation among team members. Martin noticed that some classmates encouraged each other when facing difficulties, while others shared their findings to benefit the whole team. Together, they overcame one obstacle after another, and each success strengthened the team’s cohesion (凝聚力).
Among the challenges, one was impressive. In the challenge, they had to cross a rope bridge over a simulated river. Team members had to support each other to ensure everyone crossed safely. Martin saw classmates who usually didn’t interact much tightly holding each other’s hands, giving courage and support. This scene deeply moved him, making him realize the powerful bond of friendship when facing challenges together.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Even years after graduating from high school, I continue to maintain contact with Lucy. Our friendship remains unbreakable because she was the one who kindly came to my rescue during my most embarrassing moment. This unforgettable incident took place during the opening ceremony of our school’s annual sports day.
On a cool autumn day, students were excitedly gathered in the stadium. The opening ceremony was important, letting everyone show their skills and become closer to their classmates. My gymnastics team and I practiced for weeks to prepare a routine we wanted to make everyone admire and make us feel proud.
As the ceremony progressed, the performances before ours, were impressive, and the audience’s applause and cheers filled the stadium with energy. The stands were packed with students, teachers, and parents, all eagerly watching each act.
Finally, our team’s name was called, and it was our turn to step onto the field. The spotlight shone brightly on us, casting long shadows on the ground, and we could feel the eyes of the audience on our every move. The music began, and we started our routine. Everything was going smoothly until disaster struck halfway through.
As I performed a spin (旋转), I felt my headband slip. Before I could react, it fell off leaving my hair in a mess. My face flushed with embarrassment, and a cold sweat broke out on my forehead. My heart raced, and I could feel my pulse pounding fiercely. I froze, unsure of what to do next, my mind blank and my body paralyzed (瘫痪的) with fear. The bright lights that had once felt energizing now felt like unpleasant spotlights highlighting my embarrassment. I could see some students pointing, their faces with a mix of shock and amusement. My teammates looked at me with concern, unsure how to help.

I was very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I was good at the long jump and running. As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet.
The event lasted two days. With no competitions for me on the first day, I cheered on my teammates and watched other athletes. Seeing our team do well in various events was encouraging. The successes of our team were not just victories; they were a source of inspiration. Each triumph (获胜) by our athletes was met with a round of applause and shouts of joy from our cheering section. Their achievements fueled my own motivation, and I could feel the excitement building within me. I was ready for my events.
On the second day, my long jump event was scheduled for the early afternoon. I felt confident, but when I got there I realized there were a lot of talented athletes. There was one young athlete in particular who jumped extremely far, wearing spikes (钉子鞋), making it harder for the rest of us. I was very nervous. At the end of the race, I tried my best, and although I jumped a good distance, I twisted (扭伤) my foot. I finished fourth, just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50 m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I held my breath and watched our team runners keep up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

When starting my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. But nothing compared to the problem that I got to the age where my voice started changing. At first, the voice getting deep excited me. But then I learned before getting deeper, it can crack (变嘶哑).
The first time it happened I was so embarrassed. After that, I was determined to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. At least not in public. So, except for strategic times I said, “cool” and “yeah”, I didn’t talk. My logic was, “If I don’t use my voice, it cannot crack.” However, I couldn’t go without talking forever. I needed a new solution.
I began clearing my throat before speaking, which actually seemed to help. It was great but there was a larger problem. I was much more scared about having a voice crack during class. My class had many new kids I’d never spoken with. I didn’t want their first impressions of me to be based on a voice crack.
Unfortunately, one day my concern came true. It was about two months after the beginning of the term. On the day it happened everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. I noticed that we had a substitute teacher (代课老师) and immediately started thinking about how he would take attendance. I panicked (恐慌). So many thoughts rushed through my mind that I couldn’t think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word “Here”. “Easy enough, right?” I thought so until my name was called. I did my routine — cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here.” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst voice crack in the history of voice cracks.

I was nominated (提名) for our school’s debate team. I jumped at the chance. When I got home that day, I began to fill out the application form, trying hard to prove how I met all the team’s criteria: strong communication skills, teamwork, and a good understanding of current events.
The next day, I handed in my application and waited with eagerness. I was on tenterhooks (如坐针毡) , anticipation building up with each tick of the clock.
Two weeks went by, and I received a letter from the school about the debate team, which began with “I’m sorry to…”. As soon as the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the computer.
“Mom,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, “I didn’t make the debate team.”
She looked up, a smile playing on her lips, thinking I was joking, and playfully reached out to high-five me. But the tears in my eyes told a different story.
“No, really, I wasn’t picked,” I told her, handing her the letter.
Her smile faded, replaced by a look of genuine concern. “Oh, sweetheart, I’m sorry,” she said, surprised. “There must be some mistake.” She called the debate team advisor, but he confirmed there were no mistakes and the decision was final. Hearing that, I broke down and burst out crying.
The rejection stung (刺痛) me, especially when I saw friends celebrating their acceptance. I felt cheated, questioning the fairness of the process. In my view, some selected didn’t deserve it as much as I did. Bitterness crept (潜入) into my words as I complained.
“I’m the best fit for the team,” I protested.
“See, Jenny, complaining won’t get you on the team.” Mom gave me a serious look.

In the frozen wilderness of Antarctica, Dr. Davis McClaren, a UCLA professor renowned for his work in astronomy, was on the verge of achieving his lifelong dream. He was determined to locate a rare meteorite (陨石) from Mercury (水星), believed to have landed somewhere in this vast, uninhabited landscape. Guiding him was Jerry Shepard, an experienced researcher from the National Science Foundation, accompanied by a team of sled dogs led by the fearless and intelligent Maya.
The journey was punishing from the start. Bitter winds tore at their exposed faces, while the biting cold filtered through their layers of clothing. Every step was harder than the last, but Dr. McClaren’s excitement drove him forward, his eyes constantly scanning the snow- covered horizon. Jerry, experienced in the dangers of the Antarctic, grew increasingly uneasy. He could see the signs of a storm gathering on the distant horizon. “We need to turn back.” Jerry urged, his voice barely audible over the strong wind. But McClaren, blinded by his ambition and so close to his goal, waved off the warning. Nothing would stop him now.
Just as the heavy snow began to fall, McClaren’s persistence paid off — he spotted the meteorite, half- buried beneath the ice. His heart raced as he shouted, “I found it!” He rushed toward it, unable to contain his excitement. But in his rush, he misjudged the fragile ground beneath him. A sharp crack echoed through the air, and before he could react, McClaren dropped into a hidden gap, crashing into freezing water below.
The fall was brutal. Soaked and disoriented, McClaren gasped for breath as the icy water enveloped him. His leg ached in pain, and panic surged through him as he realized he couldn’t move. Above him, Jerry acted swiftly, knowing the professor’s survival depended on immediate action. Their only hope lay in the paws of his trusted lead dog, Maya.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Meow, meow, meow” is what I heard as I walked through the alley (胡同). I got close to the noise, and noticed a tail under a piece of wood. Under the wood was a small black and white cat. I picked him up and realized he must be freezing to death. I hurried home with the cat covered in my jacket.
My new friend received his name Little Bit soon because he was nearly weightless when I held him in my hands. He stood about five inches tall. Little Bit’s small size had a great advantage-befit perfectly in the pocket of my jacket, which made taking him everywhere very easy. He would ride with me on my bike, play in the dirt with me, and catch frog.
Little Bit was the best friend I had ever had. Whenever I was home, he wouldn’t leave my side. He always wanted to play with me. Anytime I had meals, he would sit there patiently until I gave him my leftovers. When I fell asleep at night, he would always curl up (蜷缩) around my head to make sure that I was warm.
Unluckily, as I grew up, my teenage life weakened my relationship with Little Bit. I lived at such a fast pace that I stopped making time for him. My free time was spent with my other friends instead. I would come in the house on my phone and not pay attention to him at all. I often forgot to feed him. let alone walking him or playing with him. His meows became an anger to me sometimes, but it wasn’t his fault because he wanted his best friend back.
One day, there seemed to be something wrong with Little Bit’s body. He lay there and looked at me, weak and tired.

We’re in this together.” Her words were like a warm breeze, blowing away my embarrassment. Drawing a deep breath, I collected myself and quickly adjusted my hair as best I could and resumed my position in the routine. The other members of the team seamlessly picked up where we left off, their movements as fluid and coordinated as ever. By the time we reached the final pose, the stadium erupted in thunderous applause.
After our performance, I walked towards Lucy. With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged Lucy tightly. “Thank you,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “I don’t know what I would have done without you.” Lucy smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling with understanding and compassion. “We’re a team, remember? We face everything together, good and bad. And we always come out stronger on the other side.” From that day on, Lucy and I became even closer. I stared at Mom and listened eagerly. She shared her own stories of failure and disappointment and how she turned them into opportunities for growth. “Every rejection is a lesson,” she said. With her guidance, I spent the next three months improving my skills. I practiced debates, read extensively to stay updated on current events, and sought feedback from teachers and peers. I even started a debate club after school to gain more experience.
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later. When the team needed an extra member for an upcoming tournament, they considered my dedication and improvement. This time, I was ready. My performance in the tryouts was confident and well-prepared. Joining the team was a sweet victory, but the real win was in the resilience I had built and the lessons I had learned along the way. My mother’s wisdom had steered me through a tough time, and I was grateful for the journey that had made me a better debater and a stronger person.

Securing a rope around her, Jerry commanded the lead dog to go. With Maya leading the way, Jerry quickly tied the other end of the rope around his waist and began lowering himself into the gap where McClaren had fallen. The dogs barked nervously, sensing the urgency of the situation. Jerry’s hands were numb with cold, but he griped the rope tightly. As he reached the bottom, he found McClaren clinging to a piece of ice, his face pale and eyes wide with fear. Jerry quickly wrapped the rope around McClaren and signaled the dogs to pull them up.
Finally, Dr. McClaren was free, but the raging snowstorm made the journey back to the base even more dangerous. Jerry helped McClaren to his feet, supporting him as they stumbled through the blinding snow. Maya and the rest of the sled dogs struggled to march forward, their breaths visible in the freezing air. Every step was a test of their endurance and resolve. With Maya leading the way and Jerry’s determined spirit guiding them, they pushed forward. 8.I immediately took him to the vet. Nervous and scared, I waited anxiously as the vet examined him. After what felt like an eternity, the vet returned with a solemn expression. “I’m sorry,” the vet said, “but Little Bit’s health has deteriorated beyond recovery.” My heart sank as tears welled up in my eyes. I held Little Bit close to me, feeling guilty for not being there for him when he needed me the most. The vet allowed me some time alone with him, and I whispered apologies and gentle words, hoping he’d understand how much he meant to me. That night, Little Bit peacefully drifted away in my arms, leaving a void in my heart like never before.
Little Bit’s death made me realize how much he meant to me. In those quiet moments after his passing, I reflected on the joy and companionship he had given me. The small cat who once filled my days with laughter and adventure was no longer physically present, but his memory brought a renewed appreciation for the time we spent together. I regretted the time I neglected him, and promised myself to cherish the present and the relationships that truly mattered. Little Bit’s memory now lives on as a reminder to value love and companionship, teaching me to make time for those who care and to never take their presence for granted. He may have been small, but the impact he had on my life was immeasurable.
