“Wel,Amy,how are you getting on with your napkin(手帕)?”cried Lizzy, whose swift
fingers seemed to fly over her work."Not very fast,"replied quiet little Amy,without raising
her eyes..“I have almost finished one side,”“One side!!”said Lizzy, with a laugh which was
neither pleasant nor kind.“Why?We both began hemming(缝褶边)our napkins at the same
time and I'm now at the fourth side of mine!"
“I know that I am slow,”sighed Amy.“You may well say that!"'cried Lizzy.“ButI'ltry
to be steady and to do my best,"said the little girl,as she threaded her tiny needle and went on
with her work."As I sew so fast,"cried Lizzy."I am sure to have finished my napkin long before
the bell rings for dinner.I'll just run for a minute to the garden to see if the roses are out."Tossing
down her work on a chair,Lizzy flew off.
高三英语第4页(共12页)
Amy longed for the fresh air and the flowers, but her work must first be done.Steadily she
laid down her broad hem and had finished the second side of her napkin before her sister came
back."Ah,you plodding little thing!"cried Lizzy."You will never get up to me.I'll have time
to go to my room and put my new picture on the wall."Off went gay little Lizzy.Amy went on
with her work. Before her sister again entered the room, the third side of her napkin was
hemmed.
"Had you not better finish your sewing?"said Amy."It must be near dinner-time now."
"Oh!I can finish it in two minutes.Only I want to look at that story, which Tom told us was so
amusing.”“But if you are late?”“No fear of that!”cried Lizzy.“No one is so likely to be late
as a slow little creature like you!"
Poor Amy made no reply.Stitch after stitch, stitch after stitch, quietly she worked on.
Lizzy was soon so deep in her story that she forgot all about her work, till startled by the sound
of the bell."Can it be dinner-time!"she cried."Oh dear, and my napkin is not hemmed! And
yours?”Lizzy stared at Amy.“"It is just finished,“said Amy,.as she quietly folded it up.“This
just like‘The Hare and the Tortoise'.”thought Lizzy, who, though impolite and vain(自负的),
had enough of sense to take a lesson.
Quickness may have the start, but the quiet, steady worker does most in the end.

Bzzz.Oh no-a mosquito.Have you ever wondered how these small insects are so good
at finding you?A new study has identified one way they home in on us.It's visual.Mosquitoes
just like the look of our skin.
Claire Rusch and her colleagues have been working to uncover ways to avoid mosquito
bites. And this biologist knows plenty about that. After all, while studying mosquitoes,"you get
bitten a lot,"she notes."It's not easy to work with an animal that feeds on you."A bite from
a disease-carrying mosquito can be more than annoying, though.Rusch and her team just
discovered something that could help drive these mosquitoes away. The Aedes aegypti
mosquitoes that Rusch studies are attracted to a few colors, especially ones with long
wavelengths of light. We see these colors-the same wavelengths given off by human skin-
as red.
That finding could lead to the design of better traps to keep mosquitoes away from people.
Anyone stuck in a room with a mosquito knows they are very good at finding you. These insects
can detect the carbon dioxide or CO,we breathe out. They also are attracted to sweat, body
warmth and contrasting colors. But until now scientists didn't know that mosquitoes could detect
specific colors."I found their research results surprising and very interesting,"says Trevor
Sorrells,a mosquito neuroscientist.
The new research shows mosquitoes can see red light and tell that it is different from other
colors."This is important,"he notes,"because all human skin tones(reflect red light better
than other colors. So mosquitoes can use it to locate human skin."Next time you're out where
mosquitoes might be present,.don't forget the bug spray(蚊虫喷雾剂).And that red shirt? You
might want to leave it at home.

On 26 February 2024,China Media Group(CMG)aired the country's first animated
series produced with the help of generative artificial intelligence(Al)models.Titled Qianqiu
Shisong, the series includes multiple seven-minute episodes and features animated retellings of
some of the most famous classic Chinese poems and their backstories. Its contents are drawn
from more than 200 time-honored Chinese poems that are found in primary, secondary and
higher education textbooks.
The show was produced using CMG Media GPT,an AI model co-developed by CMG
and Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL).According to the laboratory,AI
technology was used in every stage of Qianqiu Shisong's production process, from art design
to video generation and post-production.
CMG Media GPT was trained by being fed with large amounts of data from CMG's previous
poem-relevant programs, enabling it to create images and scenes that represent the style of
traditional Chinese ink-wash paintings and feature historically accurate architectural designs
and clothing details.
CMG Media GPT has significantly cut down on the time and costs of animation production.
"AI will not replace humans but will increase humans'working efficiency. For example, our
team used to make one episode each month, but now we can make three episodes each month
with the assistance of Al,"says the director of Qianqiu Shisong.
Following the putonghua version,an English-dubbed(英文配音的)version of the series
titled Poems of Timeless Acclaim was aired online in March. The series will also be made
available in other languages. On Chinese social media, some netizens comment that Qianqiu
Shisong is a valuable opportunity to practice China's AI technology.Others say that Al-generated
animation is a smart approach to popularizing Chinese culture as the advanced technology can
inject new life into ancient poetry.
32.What can we learn about Qianqiu Shisong from Paragraph1?
A.It's the first animated series throughout the world.

Paragraph 1:
Without saying a word, my dad released my hand, pulled out the $20 bill in his pocket and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the father on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir. Out of your pocket fell this bill.” The man turned around and saw the money. He stood silently for a second, feeling confused. But soon, he knew what was going on. Holding my dad’s hand in both of his hands and keeping a tight grip on the bill, his eyes lit up with gratitude. With his lips shaking and something shining in his eyes, he replied in a low voice, “Thank you, Sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
Paragraph 2:
That day I missed the circus performance and went back home with my dad. Puzzled and a bit disappointed,I kept asking father why he gave our money to the family . My father held my hang even more tightly and explained to me in a gentle way. It was a desperate and heartbreaking situation for a father who wished nothing but brighten his children’s life just with the circus! “I just don’t want to let the kids down. And I’m sure you are the same” .I looked up at my tall father. From that day on,I know that being wealthy is not just about money and being happy is not just get what you want.

Text 2
M: Hi Jane. I saw your brother in the park yesterday. Isn’t he usually at work at the supermarket during the week?
W: Normally, Mike’d be there, Harry. But he’s on holiday this week. Oh, I think he’ll board a plane in just several minutes.
Text 3
W: Look at those black clouds. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go on a picnic.
M: You’re right. Why don’t we watch a video at home? I borrowed a good musical from Jim yesterday.
W: Why not? I love musicals.
Text 4
W: Hi, Mike, what seems to be the trouble?
M: I’ve got a really bad sore throat and my head hurts. My muscles ache and I have no energy.
W: Let me take your temperature. Let’s see ... You’re running a fever. Let me take a look at your throat.
Text 5
W: Have you finished the interview?
M: Yeah. He said he used to be a magazine reporter when he was in college.

Text 6
M: Would you like some dessert today, madam? We have a very delicious chocolate cake, or you can choose one of our famous pies.
W: That sounds good, but I’m very full. I think I’d just like the bill, please.
M: Certainly. And here is the bill.
W: Excuse me, but I think somebody made a mistake. I’m being charged too much.
M: Can you explain the problem to me, madam?
W: I didn’t ask for any drink, but it says here that I ordered a glass of milk. And I had a cheese pizza, not a vegetable one.
Text 7
W: I’m happy to hear about your friend’s wedding, sir. For your jacket, would you like a more traditional three-button or a modern two-button?
M: Let’s go with a two-button. I’m not as slim as I used to be, you know.
W: No problem, sir. And for your white shirt? Would you like your shirt to show past your jacket sleeves (袖子)? If so, we’ll have to adjust the sleeve length of the jacket by a half of an inch.
M: Sure, let’s do that. I think it makes me look more fashionable.
W: I completely agree. And at least this will work for anniversary parties and business events as well.
Text 8

Text 10
M: Every October, farmers across the US harvest millions of pumpkins. Some are selected to win contests like the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off held annually in Half Moon Bay, California. Celebrating its 45th year in 2018, the contest has always been extremely popular with pumpkin growers. However, it has become even more so since supermarket chain Safeway, which sponsors the event, increased the maximum prize to $30,000 in 2015. To qualify for this world record prize, competitors have to produce a world record pumpkin. In 2018, that meant one heavier than the huge 2,624-pound pumpkin, which broke the previous world record at the Giant Pumpkin European Championship in 2016. If the heaviest pumpkin weighs less, the owner receives $7 per pound, which, given the size of the gourds (葫芦科植物), adds up to thousands of dollars in cash.
The event, which took place on October 8th, 2018, attracted more than 20 huge pumpkins. Though 12 came in at more than 1,000 pounds each, it was three-time winner Steven Daletas who took home the top prize of $15,190.
