2023 was a spectacular year for fiction. Let us learn from Oprah’s Book Club Selection about which fictions stuck with you, which stories made you laugh out loud, and which books made you want to start all over again.
The Fraud by Zadie Smith
This historical novel follows the 1873 Tichborne trial from the perspective of Eliza Touchet, a housemaid whose purpose was to discover the truth behind headlines. Who stood in her way? Self-important men, friends of her cousin, and old-fashioned polite society. Documenting true events, events, Smith tells a story of justice and storytelling itself.
— Henry Guzman
The Unsettled by Ayana Mathis
Ava grew up in Bonaparte, one of the oldest Black communities. But by 1985, Bonaparte’s Black population had nearly disappeared and Ava was living in a shelter with a son that her own mother didn’t know about. The author of a previous pick from Oprah’s Book Club Selection, The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, puts together a story of a mother, a daughter, and the land that both unites and divides them.
— Charley Burlock
Death Valley by Melissa Broder
From the author of Milk Fed comes a journey in California. With a seriously sick husband and a critically injured father in the ICU, a writer headed to the Death Valley, desperate for alone time. Instead, she found a giant cactus (仙人掌), climbed inside, and entered a landscape in which rocks talked and time stood still. Like grief itself, this book is at once absurd and wise; it will change you.
— Carol V. Bell
Happiness Falls by Angie Kim
Everything seemed normal the morning of Mia’s father’s disappearance. But an abnormality in 0.00000003 percent of her younger brother’s DNA resulted in a condition that left him — the only one who knew what happened — unable to speak. As the mystery of her father’s disappearance mixed with mysteries of her brother’s condition, the question arose: Can we really know those we love?
— Charley Burlock

My grandmother’s dining room table was the gathering place for the whole community. The coffee was always on, and more often than not, there were some freshly-baked treats. The door was never locked. Even when my grandmother wasn’t home, she left the door open in case company stopped by. A typical night would see people crowd into the dining room. There was lots of laughter, and some tears too. Folks didn’t always agree. However, we had true concern for one another and an attempt to understand even if agreement was unlikely.
It’s what I miss most about my teenage years. I didn’t realize then how quickly that was going to fade from the world. The more “advanced” we have gotten, the further we have traveled from a place where sharing leads to understanding and disagreement does not equal disrespect.
I am as guilty as anyone who gives in to our digital age. For years my dinner table has had as many electronic devices present as people. The teenage years for my kids have been taken by social media instead of real experiences and relationships. In an effort to give them the newest of what our society offers, I have taken away what’s most important from them. We text from the same room, share YouTube videos, and communicate in broken sentences.
Weeks ago, I held a family meeting to introduce a dinner plan — limit digital interaction. And things are starting to change. That, with a strict no electronics at the dinner table policy has led to conversations. We have discovered there isn’t much on social media when everyone else is home. We have discovered that there is only so much TV anyone can stomach before searching for a book, or better yet, listening to each other. Our house has started to be like the home I grew up in.
4. What do we know about grandmother’s dining room?
A. It hosted baking lessons in the community. B. It witnessed moments of joy and displeasure.
C. It presented a depressing dining atmosphere. D. It was rarely open during the public holidays.
5. What does the author miss most about her teenage years?
A. Innocence. B. Agreement. C. Laughter. D. Interaction.
6. Which might be a consequence of giving in to the digital age?
A. Shallow engagement. B. Valueless experiences.
C. Unreliable connections. D. Failed relationships.
7. What did the dinner plan bring about?
A. Family talks. B. Physical health.
C. Tasty cuisines. D. Strict disciplines.
C
Driverless taxis operated by AI are gradually becoming a common sight. For instance, the Chinese city of Wuhan has seen an explosive growth of such taxis, with a peak of over 20 orders per car in a single day.
Consumers prefer it for finding themselves paying less for the Apollo Go, the robotaxi operated by Chinese tech group Baidu, than traditional ones run by human drivers. In Wuhan, a 10-kilometer ride in a self-driving robotaxi costs between 4 and 16 yuan ($0.55-$2.22), while a regular service costs between 18 and 30 yuan ($2.48-$4.13).
Apollo Go started offering fully driverless services on open roads and received the permits to collect fees from the passengers on August 8, 2022. According to Baidu’s financial report, Apollo Go has provided over 6million rides as of April, 2024.
The emergence of AI-driven technology is bound to reshape industries, and at the forefront are autonomous vehicles. With the gradual promotion of unmanned vehicles, many wonder: Is unmanned driving taking away the livelihood of taxi drivers? Will it eventually replace drivers? Millions of individuals earn their livelihoods in the transportation industry. Apart from taxi drivers, there are also long-haul (长途的) truckers and local delivery drivers. According to a McKinsey report, self-driving cars could represent as much as 15 percent of global vehicle sales by 2030. This shift will not only impact traditional driving roles but also spread across sectors linked to transportation. As humanity step into the AI era, it is crucial to ensure that this transformation is smooth, human-centered, and provides ordinary people with sufficient preparation time.
The shift from human drivers to AI in transportation is not just a technological matter but a deeply human one. While autonomous transportation offers great potential, it also presents significant challenges. It is the duty of professionals to adjust, promote, and guarantee that AI attaches importance to the well-being of humanity and technologies are directed toward goodness, enabling AI to better serve humanity.
8. Which makes Apollo Go popular in Wuhan?
A. Easy operation. B. Great convenience.
C. Favorable price. D. Novel appearance.
9. Why does the promotion of robotaxi concern the public?
A. It may bring unexpected road safety issues
B. It may negatively impact the labor market.
C It may increase passengers’ financial burden.
D. It may slow innovation in automobile industry.
10. What can be inferred about AI in transportation?
A. It generates a handsome profit. B. It improves the road conditions.
C. It is in need of mindful progress. D. It poses challenges to passengers.
11. Which might be the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Pros and Cons of Robotaxis B. Apollo Go Wins Hearts in Wuhan
C. Historical Breakthrough in AI Industry D. AI Drive Should Be Human-centered
D
There’s been a lot of talk about mindfulness, but it’s possible that future fulfilment is more about being in “flow”. And if you thought they were just catchwords describing the same thing, think again.
Sports psychologist Gavin Freeman, whose expertise over 25 years includes working with the Australian Institute of Sport ( AIS), as well as across several Olympic campaigns and with professional leagues around the world, said mindfulness and flow “are not as related as we think” because compared with mindfulness, flow is an extremely active state of mind.
Mr. Freeman said flow was achieved by reflecting on np past experiences, combined with “sustained appropriate focus” and a little positive self-talk. And while most people might change the priority of those three elements, he was adamant that experience comes first.
“Effective training history is the most important thing you can do,” he said. “I would say to kids that it doesn’t matter if you’re getting a little frustrated. I once had a session with an eight-year-old, working on why she got frustrated on the soccer field. “It all focused around her building a training history and...not focusing on her thoughts, because it’s hard to change a person’s thoughts.”
For those ready to realize sports-related accomplishments, Freeman encouraged kids to talk to a coach or trainer for help getting started. “Young children enter flow with relative ease,” Freeman said. “With expert guidance, little kids very often reach that state of deep absorption and focus. They’re focusing on one thing that’s the thing we want to return to.”
Creating a “container” was “the most important thing” for Freeman. His practical tricks included wearing headphones even if you weren’t listening to anything, because it stopped people from interrupting you. He also suggested using a timer and switching off devices. He described the flow state as a door opening. “It’s the best feeling, knowing you are focused.”
12. What does Freeman think about mindfulness?
A. It is a rather passive mental state. B. It is achieved by past experiences.
C. It is a similar mental state to flow. D. It is associated with positive talks.
13. Which can best replace the underlined word “adamant” in paragraph 3?
A. Concerned. B. Convinced. C. Astonished. D. Impressed.
14. What does Freeman advise kids to do for sports success?
A. Adjust their inner thoughts. B. Focus on training history.
C. Consult with professionals. D. Receive training with ease.
15. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. How to describe the flow state. B. How to apply the practical tricks.
C. How to find the important things. D. How to avoid digital interruption.

When major aspects of life take a downturn, the minor matters tend to bother you even more. This was my experience last year. My husband, Ethan, faced layoff, while I was still employed but only on a part-time basis. The uncertainty about our future weighed heavily on my mind. It was during this time that something seemingly insignificant like a signpost began to really bother me.
A relic from the previous homeowners, the signpost had already seen better days when we moved in. The past years hadn’t been kind to it. The paint had faded and the metal pole supporting the sign was rusted (生锈的). The pole had been struck by passing vehicles, resulting in a slight bend. Despite this, since it could still show directions and our visitors never complained, there seemed to be no urgent need for a replacement. However, every time I laid eyes on it, it served as a constant reminder of all the challenges in my life.
“I wish we had a better signpost,” I caught myself thinking as I pulled out of the driveway one morning. It was more of a fleeting thought than a sincere prayer. Perhaps I would have completely forgotten about it if not for what happened next.
When I got home from work, Ethan informed me, “Our neighbor Benjamin texted. A girl drove straight into our signpost. Completely knocked it down.”
“Is she alright?” I asked.
“No idea. Benjamin just saw it from a distance.” Ethan replied.
Considering the current state of our finances, buying a new signpost was definitely not something we could afford. I let out a sigh, realizing the truth behind the saying: “Be careful what you wish for.”
The next morning, I pushed the thought of the signpost aside and prepared for the day ahead. Getting into my car, I drove into the driveway.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Where our rusted signpost had once stood was a better one.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“You didn’t check the back of the signpost, did you?” Ethan greeted me at dusk.

First of all, please include a selection of bright joyful flowers suitable for a birthday celebration. Additionally, I would appreciate it if you could include a card with the message: “Happy 50th Birthday, Mr. Thomas! Wishing you a year filled with health and happiness. Best wishes, Li Hua.”
Please let me know if you require any further details or payment information.
Warm regards,

Where our rusted signpost had once stood was a better one. To my surprise, the new signpost was beautifully crafted and looked like it belonged to a modern art exhibit. The pole was sturdy, freshly painted, and well-aligned, making me wonder who had placed this gift at our doorstep. With curiosity piqued, I approached it and noticed a note attached to it — a simple card with handwritten words: “Sorry for the accident. I hope this adds a little brightness to your day. —Audree.”
“You didn’t check the back of the signpost, did you?” Ethan greeted me at dusk. Confused, I walked back to the signpost and turned it around. Attached delicately to the back was a small potted plant, its green leaves fresh and vibrant. It was accompanied by a second note, reading, “Life is full of unexpected turns. Let this plant be a reminder that new beginnings can blossom from any setback.” In that moment, I felt a warmth spreading through my chest, realizing that kindness from a stranger had turned a setback into an unexpected blessing.
