Some beaches are perfect for relaxing, while others offer activities like hiking and water sports. Visit these beautiful beaches for an unforgettable vacation.
Cannon Beach
If your perfect beach vacation spot features postcard-worthy scenery and peace, look no further than Cannon Beach. In this Pacific Northwest town, you can even build a fire on the beach to relax beside while watching the sun set. When you need a break from the beach, grab a bike and head downtown to explore its art galleries, shops and restaurants.
Horseshoe Bay Beach
For a one-of-a-kind beach experience, head to Horseshoe Bay Beach on Bermuda’s South Shore. Known for its pink sand, this beach is a popular destination for families looking to play in the calm blue-green waters and build blush-colored sandcastles. Adventure seekers can also take part in the self-guided island bicycle tour or engage in exciting water sports.
Mohegan Bluffs
This beach is famous for its natural beauty. Upon arrival, pause to admire your surroundings and learn about its ties to the native people, their ancient traditions, and connection to the land, adding depth to your beach experience. Then, take the 141 steps down to the sand to sunbathe. After that, climb back up to visit the Southeast Light for an up-close view of its 18th-century lighthouse.
South Beach
This tropical district on Florida’s Atlantic Coast is world-renowned for its powdery white sand. As social creatures, research has histoncally pointed us away from time alone. But recently, more people are spending time away from the crowd, and even seem to desire it. In Solitude (独处) — The science and power of being alone, a book co-written by Heather Hansen, an award-winning journalist and author, with the researcher Thuy-vy Nguyen, they set out to understand how everyday solitude affects people’s lives.
In the largest study of its kind, thousands aged between 13 and 85 participated in online surveys. For some, think of the word “solitude”, and they will think of a determined hiker alone in the wilderness. Most people described experiences of solitude achieved while, for example, walking in a park or writing in a journal. Surprisingly, some described solitude as having a psychological distance from others, but not necessarily a physical one.
In several separate experiments, Nguyen found that when people spend 15 minutes alone, there is a “deactivation effect”, meaning “high excitement” emotions like anxiety are decreased, while positive “low excitement” feelings like calmness are increased, which wasn’t seen when people spent 15 minutes with another person. One caveat is that sometimes solitude also increases the negative low excitement feeling of loneliness. However, a further experiment showed that this increase could be weakened when individuals chose to think about positive thoughts or when they were given a choice whether to spend time alone.
The list doesn’t end there, though. Several studies link time alone and creativity, but only when people avoid social interactions because of what is known as a “non-fearful” preference for solitude. On the other hand, there is no such link in those whose fear or anxiety prevents them from interacting with others, or because of avoidance, where people disliked social interactions.
Now think about the next time you will be on your own. Will you enjoy or suffer it? As evidence increases for how time alone can be a positive force in shaping our lives, Hansen and her colleagues recommend planning for it-and protecting it.
4. What is the survey in paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. When solitude is needed. B. What solitude looks like.
C. How solitude affects people’s lives. D. How people make the best of solitude.
5. What does the underlined word “caveat” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Trap. B. Bonus. C. Warning. D. Prediction.
6. According to the studies, time alone will boost creativity for those who__________.
A. prefer to take risks B. choose to be alone without fear
C. dislike social interactions D. enjoy negative emotions
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Power of One B. Profit of Socializing
C. The Urge to Live Alone D. Battle Against Solitude

Texan 81-year-old good friends Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip toured the world in 80 days, proving that adventure doesn’t have an age limit.
Their first stop was a location challenging even many experienced travelers: the Antarctic. Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake Passage, the waters between the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic’s South Shetland Islands. “For almost two days, we were rocking and rolling, slipping and sliding through the Drake Passage and we were holding on for dear life, “Hamby said. The voyage, however, faded from their mind as they set foot on the ground of the Antarctic, fascinated by the breathtaking beauty of penguins, icebergs and glaciers.
Since that first venture, the pair have visited 18 countries across all seven continents. And despite the challenges international travel presented, the good friends said they had finished their trip without any argument. Though they’re both independent and stubborn, they respect each other’s feelings. And what they remember the most are the people that they met. “We met some of the most wonderful, kindest, friendliest people. We just have friends now all over the world that we love dearly,” Hamby said.
The two shared a crucial piece of advice for travelers worrying about the language barrier on their own adventures.” You know, people often ask us about it,” said Hamby.” We tell them there’s one universal language, and that’s the smile. We found it worked wonders because we were often aware that English was not always spoken and that the smile could cover all languages.”
They also encouraged other older people not to let age hold them back. Aside from some minor changes in plans, their age didn’t affect their itinerary(旅程)abroad. They said they felt confident that if they were injured during their trip, their children would have been at peace knowing that they were doing what they absolutely wanted. And Hazelip described 81 as the perfect age to embark on a trip.”Getting older does give us a little bit of wisdom of making decisions,” she said.
8. What might the pair think of their trip to the Antaretic?
A. Brief but exciting. B. Tough but worthwhile.
C. Interesting but fruitless. D. Unpleasant but memorable.
9. What is the highlight of the pair’s adventures for themselves?
A. Meeting nice people along the way.
B. Experiencing many challenging activities.
C. Learning about different cultures from travelers.
D. Avoiding conflicts despite their stubborn nature.
10. What helped the pair communicate with people during the adventure?
A. English. B. The smile.
C. Crucial advice. D. Universal gestures.
11. What can we infer about the pair from the last paragraph?
A. They fell down when riding a bike in Bali.
B. They regretted not exploring the world earlier.
C. Their children understood and supported them.
D. Their wisdom saved them lots of time during their trip.

Researchers hope brain implants (植入物) will one day help people who have lost the ability to speak, to get their voice back and maybe even to sing. Now, for the first time, scientists have demonstrated that the brain’s electrical activity can be interpreted and used to reconstruct music.
A study published in PLOSBiology analyzed data from 29 people who already had brain implants that monitored them for epileptic seizures (癫痫). As the participants listened to Pink Floyd’s song “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1,” a song which is “very layered,” and therefore is interesting to analyze, their implanted electrodes (电极) obtained electrical activity in several brain regions related to musical elements such as tone, rhythm, harmony and lyrics. The researchers then ran these data through an AI model to partially reconstruct what participants heard. The reconstructed melody was roughly complete, and the lyrics were unclear but recognizable if one knew what to listen for.
Beyond music, the results may be most useful for translating brain signals into human speech, which itself contains melodic differences, including tempo, stress, accents and intonation. These subtle differences “carry meaning that we can’t communicate with words alone,” Bellier says. The researchers hope their new model will improve brain-computer interfaces, devices that turn brain activity into synthesized (合成的) speech for those who can no longer speak on their own. “Instead of robotically saying, ‘I Love. You,’ you can yell, ‘I love you!” says the study’s senior author, Robert T. Knight, a cognitive neuroscientist.
The current model relies on surgically implanted electrodes. But as brain-recording techniques improve, it may be possible to gather such data with more sensitive electrodes attached to the outside of the scalp (头皮). For now the researchers hope to generate crisper musical playback by packing the electrodes closer together on the brain’s surface, enabling an even more detailed look at the electrical symphony the organ produces. “Today we reconstructed a song,” Knight says. “Maybe tomorrow we can reconstruct the entire Pink Floyd album.”
12 What have researchers achieved at the present stage?
A. They have recreated a little brain music.
B. They have implanted electrodes to interpret lyrics.
C. They have found a cure for people with epileptic seizures.
D. They have given people who can’t speak the power to communicate.
13. What did the study published in PLOSBiology analyze?
A The effects of brain implants on epileptic seizures.
B. The impact of Pink Floyd’s music on brain function.
C The musical preferences of individuals with brain implants.
D. The electrical activity in the brain while listening to a specific song.
14. According to Robert T. Knight, what’s the significance of the new model?
A. It will make robotic voice more pleasant to hear.
B. It can help people express themselves more fluently.
C. It may help some disabled people better con vey their meaning.
D It is likely to free people’s hands when operating the computer.
15. What’s the decisive factor of the further development of the study?
A. The arrangement of implanted electrodes.
B. The efforts to reconstruct Pink Floyd’s entire album.
C. The development of techniques to pick up brain signals.
D. The interpretation of the electrical activity of the brain.

How to Make Your Writing Flow?
Writing flow refers to how smoothly text flows from one sentence to the next and one paragraph to another. ____16____ On the other hand, choppy (不连贯的) writing lacking flow disrupts the reading experience. Luckily, you have the tips below to improve the flow of your writing.
1. Vary your sentence structure.
Using only short, choppy sentences creates a disconnected rhythm that disrupts the flow, while a series of long, complex sentences overwhelm readers. ____17____ Varying sentence structure keeps readers engaged and create s natural movement from one idea to the next.
2. Use transition words and phrases.
Transition words and phrases act like bridges between sentences and paragraphs. They create logical connections between ideas. Use transitions like “however,” “therefore,” “similarly,” and “in contrast” to glue sentences and paragraphs together smoothly. ____18____
3. Structure paragraphs around a central idea.
____19____ The supporting sentences in the paragraph should work together to explain, develop, or argue that central idea. This creates cohesion within paragraphs and connects them to each other logically. Use topic sentences to introduce the main idea of each paragraph. Paragraphs structured around a singular focus improve writing flow and readability.
4. ____20____
Revisiting writing with fresh eyes makes flaws in flow and transitions more noticeable. Let your drafts rest for a day or two to prevent getting stuck reworking the same passage repeatedly. Approaching writing anew allows you to evaluate flow and smooth out imperfections with distance and objectivity.
A. Don’t leave out the revising process.
B. Let completed drafts rest before editing.
C. The key is to mix sentence lengths to create fluid variety.
D. Place them at the beginning of a sentence or between independent clauses.
E. Flowing writing maintains the continuity of ideas and transitions logically.
F. Each paragraph should have a controlling idea relating to your overall theme.
G. As a writer, it is your responsibility to present your readers with a central idea.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Look!” I said to my husband, Roger, pointing to the branches. “The doves (鸽子) have built a nest.
On a chilly April day, we watched with horror as a hawk dived down and took one of the doves. By the next morning the other parent was gone too. Roger climbed up a ladder to take a look into the nest. Was it possible the hawk had spared the young? Yes, there sat a newly hatched baby dove! We brought him inside and set up the nesting box with the heat lamps we had used for raising chickens. Then we rushed to the pet shop to buy the formula (配方奶) which needed to look like the mother’s milk. But even with our care and prayers, we knew that the dove’s chances were slim. We were especially worried that our little bird, whom we’d named Hawkeye, hardly cooed (咕咕地叫) at all. That had to be a bad sign.
But to our surprise, Hawkeye not only survived but also thrived. Within a month, he was able to stand on the edge of a bowl and eat out of a baby spoon. And before we knew it, he was eating the seeds we gave him. Having the opportunity to nurture this new life brought me a greater measure of peace with each passing day.
As Hawkeye grew, we noticed that unlike all the other doves in our yard, he had a double breast with a line dividing it. When I did some research on the doves, I found out that females don’t often coo.
“We got it all wrong,” I told Roger. “Hawkeye is a girl!”
We realized that we’d have to teach her to fly. First, we urged her to fly from a finger to the bottom rung (梯子的横档) of a six-foot ladder, and in no time she was moving quickly to the top. She lit out (逃走,溜掉) for the kitchen whenever she heard the click of the spoon on her bowl. By mid-June she’d gained full confidence in her wings.

【答案】Insights from a UK Exchange
I’m Li Hua and have just completed my two-week academic exchange programme in the UK recently. This unique experience granted me a front-row seat to both diverse learning environments and local life. Academically, I engaged with challenging coursework and dynamic seminars, learning not just from textbooks but from lively debates with peers. Living alongside local students, I navigated the intricacies of daily life abroad, adapting to new norms and customs.
The greatest challenge? Overcoming the initial language barrier and adjusting to cultural differences! However, these obstacles became steppingstones to my growth. This adventure has taught me that embracing challenges is essential for fostering intercultural understanding and personal growth.

【答案】One possible version:
At that time, we knew it was time to set our Hawkeye free. We took her outside, but she only flew about the yard, even when we left her and went back inside. My heart broke as she watched us through the window. Finally, after several minutes, she flew to the tree and then took off into the sky. I often stared out the back window, hoping to catch just a glimpse of her. “If I could only see her one more time,” I told Roger, “I’d know everything would be okay.” I had nearly given up hope.
But one May morning, Hawkeye and the other dove landed on the rooftop. The smaller one bore Hawkeye’s distinctive chest markings. She had not only returned, but she’d also brought her mate with her! They built a nest on the very same branch where Hawkeye had been born. Several weeks later we watched Hawkeye feed her own two babies. And every time she flew into the sky, I felt my own heart fly with her—light and filled with grace.
