Katalin Karikó along with her colleague Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023 for the development of messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.
Karikó was born in January 1955, in a small village in Hungary. She had an ambition from early on to become a scientist. As a young adult, she became interested in mRNA, which carries DNA instructions to the protein-making engine of cells. She hoped that mRNA could play a key role in the treatment of various diseases. It became her mission to make her dream a reality to help cure patients. However, Karikó faced a shortage of money for her research in her country, and she then faced the choice of stopping and doing something not connected to her mission or continuing her research at the price of having to leave her country.
After searching for posts and scholarships worldwide, Karikó accepted an offer from Temple University in Philadelphia for a postdoctoral fellowship. Karikó and her husband gave up everything they had in their homeland and bought a one-way ticket to the U.S., where they knew no one. She was aware of the risks but didn’t feel discouraged. As she put it in an award acceptance speech, “Follow your dreams and don’t hesitate to learn anything from anyone.”
She was initially on track to become a full professor but received repeated fund rejections. Undeterred by the problems and challenges, she chose to continue her research. By focusing on what mattered to her every day, she “accidentally” met her work partner Drew Weissman who was also interested in mRNA. They teamed up to work on mRNA and published papers about their groundbreaking discovery for years. Then the pandemic hit the world. The changed mRNA technology Karikó and Weissman invented was then used in vaccines (疫苗) that prevented the infection effectively.
Karikó’s life is a testament (证明) to finding one’s passion and then pursuing it every single day. Many of us know what we are fond of, but we are not good self-motivators on a daily basis.
24. What is probably the main contribution of Karikó?
A. Simplifying the mRNA technology.
B. Making the structure of mRNA clear.
C. Laying the foundation for mRNA vaccines.
D. Developing a vaccine for a serious disease.
25. What can we learn about Karikó from paragraph 2?
A. She had a clear sense of purpose.
B. She was poor when she was young.
C. She was hesitant to leave her country.
D. She longed to be a doctor to cure patients.
26. What does the underlined part “Undeterred by” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Being afraid of. B. Not motivated by.
C. Being unaware of. D. Not discouraged by.
27. What can we learn from Karikó’s success?
A. Every minute counts.
B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
D. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Traditional micro-robots often face limitations due to their power sources, but recently developed insect-sized robot powered by tiny explosions has demonstrated the ability to climb, jump, and carry loads many times its own weight.
The robot, mainly developed by materials engineer Robert Shepherd at Cornell University in New York, along with his PhD student Cameron Aubin, is powered by tiny actuators (致动器). “The actuator looks like a column. It’s an empty cylinder with a stretchy rubber on the top,” said Aubin.
The researchers employed four actuators to drive the robot’s feet. To make the robot jump or climb, a stream of methane (甲烷) and oxygen was fed into each foot and sparked (触发) with electricity from a battery. The resulting reaction between the gases released energy as a small explosion, causing the rubber to change its form.
Shepherd noted that the rapid explosions were so tiny that they didn’t damage the rubber. But they provided considerable propulsion: the robot could jump to a height of 56 centimeters and carry a load 22 times its own weight.
“This team has brought chemically powered actuation to impressive ranges for robotics while also demonstrating impressive capabilities for insect- size machines,” said Ryan Truby, a materials scientist at Northwestern University in Illinois.
Robots that are small and light but strong and able to cover large distances could one day be used in environmental monitoring or search- and- rescue applications. And the robot built by Aubin and Shepherd, described in a paper published in Science, would need further development for use in the field. “ At the moment, it needs to be connected to a panel that contains the gas supply and a battery, a limitation that presents a challenge. Coming up with ways to burn fuels on a wireless robot is not easy,” said Truby. “This is the next big challenge to address.”
28. Why does the recently developed insect-sized robot stand out?
A. It is extremely tiny and light. B. It is equipped with a column.
C. It is extremely swift and quick. D. It is driven by explosive force.
29. What happens when the methane and oxygen is sparked?
A. The reaction creates a mixture of gas to drive the robot.
B. The reaction generates heat that is changed into movement.
C. The reaction transforms a stretchy rubber to drive the robot.
D. The reaction provides electricity that is changed into movement.
30. What does “propulsion” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Ability to move. B. Possibility to develop.
C. Force to push things. D. Electricity to spark gases.
31. How can Aubin and Shepherd make advancement to the robot they built?
A. They can use more actuators to provide larger power.
B. They can design programs to control the robot efficiently.
C. They can work on methods to to enable energy production wirelessly.
D. They can connect the robot to a panel containing gas supply and a battery.

If a stranger offered you a free cookie, you might well eat it. But what if they offered to also give you $2? You might politely decline and walk away thinking, “Something smells fishy.”
In a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that people tend to turn down offers of “free money” as well as unusually high salaries or suspiciously cheap services because they seem “too good to be true.” The research bridges economics and psychology to explain why financial attraction can backfire.
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent of participants ate a cookie offered freely — compared with about 20 percent of those offered $2 as well. “People typically imagine things like that someone did something disgusting to the cookie,” says study lead author Andrew J. Vonasch, a psychological scientist at University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
If someone seems to violate accepted norms such as self-interest without explanation, we assume they have hidden motives and infer there will be “phantom costs”: imagined consequences that reduce what Vonasch calls an offer’s “psychological value”.
Factors beyond the present moment may come into play. “Understanding that others’ noticeable overgenerosity may put us in their debt could also help explain people’s reluctance,” says Rachel McCloy, a psychologist studying decision-making at England’s University of Reading. The old maxim “there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ is clearly alive and well.”
Another experiment found that high scorers on measures of distrust inferred more phantom costs. The researchers also showed how to minimize the effect: simply provide a reason for the deal. The “cheap flights” experiment included a condition where the seats were revealed to be very uncomfortable.” Uncomfortable seats aren’t typically a selling point,” Vonasch says. “But telling people the seats were uncomfortable made them more willing to take them because it was sufficient clarification.”
32. What do we know about financial attraction in the first 2 paragraphs?
A. It is regarded as an unexpected positive outcome.
B. It may cause the contrary effect of that intended.
C. It can fuel the interest and bridge the gap between people.
D. It may enhance the value of an offer.
33. Why is the saying “there is no such thing as a free lunch” quoted in the last but one paragraph?
A. To promote generosity in society.
B. To serve as a supporting argument.
C. To highlight hidden costs of generous offers.
D. To remind people to be cautious of free items.
34. Which case can reduce “Phantom Costs”?
A. Offering more money. B. Providing additional unrelated gifts.
C. Discounting the price further. D. Giving a seemingly reasonable explanation.
35. Which could be the best title of the text?
A. Phantom Costs: Why Some Deals Seem Too Good to Be True
B. Phantom Costs: What Is the Science of Financial Attraction
C. Psychological Value: Why People Reject Free Money and Offer
D. Psychological Value: How People interpret Overgenerosity in Deals

Music has long been considered to be an enjoyable pastime for many people. 36 The mental health benefits from music can’t be argue: Music could also be helping you with many other health problems behind the scenes.
37 However, for the same reason, music can be very beneficial if one is in pain. By distracting (分心) the mind from the pain, music, people say, can lower- stress and anxiety levels. This, of course, can lead to less pain.
Many people enjoy relaxing music in the evening prior to going to bed. 38 While the validity of the idea is still being assessed, the lowered stress can even be tied back to blood pressure. Similarly, according to researchers, listening to just 30 minutes of soft music every day may help with healthy blood sugar levels, through the lowering of stress and anxiety.
When it comes to heart health, there is speculation (推测) that it’s not the style of music, but rather the tempo that makes it so good for your heart health. In one European study, participants listened to music as the researchers monitored their heart rates and blood pressure. 39 On the other hand, when the music slowed, the participants’ stress and anxiety levels became lower and the effects on heart rates appeared to follow suit.
40 . It is what makes music so valuable.
A. This feeling can also result in many other health problems.
B. Some experts say that music can be harmful if it is too loud.
C. This idea is a little off- the- wall but still has scientific backing.
D. They say it can play a big role in calming the brain enough to sleep.
E. The implications of music on overall well- being are really impressive.

In the golden mist of late summer, Frank and John, two inseparable friends, set off on an adventure they had particularly planned for weeks: a camping trip by the river. The air was filled with excitement as they packed their backpacks with essentials—tents, cookers, and a map, though they were confident in their knowledge of the area, having explored its boundaries since childhood.
As the sun began its fall, casting long shadows across the green landscape, they arrived at their chosen spot—a quiet bend in the river, far from civilization’s noisiness. They set up camp, and the crackling of the campfire and the gentle lapping of water against the shore were their only companions. Under a starry sky, they shared stories and dreams, unaware that their comfortable escape was about to take a dangerous turn.
The following morning, as they ventured deeper into the woods to gather firewood, the sky, which had been clear and blue, turned frightening, with heavy clouds gathering. In the distance, a low, powerful, rolling thunder echoed (回响) through the valley, a warning they should have noticed. Not frightened, they continued, their laughter now was drowned out by the growing roar(咆哮) of the river.
It happened swiftly. A wall of water, caused by the storm, rushed down the river, catching them off guard. In a heartbeat, their return path was cut off, the once familiar place was transformed into a maze (迷宫) of rushing currents and mudslides. Panic rose within them, but Frank, always the calmer of the two, remembered a survival tip from his father: “When lost or in danger, stay put if possible, assess your resources, and think reasonably.”
With the river too dangerous to cross, they came back to higher ground, seeking shelter beneath a rocky overhang. As the rain pounded down, they gathered together, their spirits dampened but not defeated. John remembered another crucial lesson: using natural resources for survival. He suggested they start a fire using dry leaves and branches they had collected before the storm and they managed to light a small flame, providing warmth and a light of hope.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.

D

F. It is also highly popular due to the individualized effects on stress and anxiety,
G. Interestingly, the more cheerful the music was, the faster their heart rates were.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.

Text 1
M: Where are you working now, Jennifer? Still in the hospital?
W: No, I left the hospital and I refused the job at the drugstore. I’m working as a teacher in a medical college now.
Text 2
W: Do you live very far from your office?
M: Well, the distance is about 20 miles. But it doesn’t seem that far to drive to work. The road is good and there’s not much traffic.
Text 3
M: Julia, is everything ready for the children’s picnic today?
W: Yes, Charlie. Patty has prepared for transportation. I’ve got the picnic baskets ready and John has prepared all the children’s clothes.
Text 4
W: What time is tomorrow’s meeting? Is it at 8: 30?
M: No, it’s scheduled for 9:00 in the morning.
W: Good. That gives me an hour to prepare after getting to the office.
Text 5
M: Isn’t this your usual stop?
W: Yes, but today I’m going to the library.
M: Oh, then you should get off at the next stop and walk to Clifton Street.
Text 6
W: There are many candidates for this promotion. In my opinion, Mr Bannister has proven himself to the company, but he doesn’t have much experience.
M: I agree with you, Amelia, but we shouldn’t ignore Mrs Templeton. She really helped us a lot with the trade deal last year.
W: I didn’t think about that. You’re right. We should go with her, as she’s been with us longer.
M: Let’s inform Mr Duncan that we’ve reached a decision.
Text 7
M: Where are you now? In your room?
W: No. I’m wandering around the hotel. It’s really a good place.
M: Yeah. You work out, right? Go and take a look at the fitness center.
W: Where is that?
M: You can get to the fitness center from the back of the hotel. It’s on the right side of the business center.
W: Sounds good. Where are the conference rooms we’ll be using tomorrow?
M: Oh, they’re right next to the front office.
Text 8
W: At lunchtime, I watched that good cooking show, Chef’s Special, and I’ve got some great ideas for some meals we can try out for dinner.
M: Well, that sounds good. So what’s on your list?
W: Let’s see. We’ve got some meat at home already, but we need something for a salad. We need some tomatoes, carrots and green onions.
M: Sounds very healthy.
W: The apples look really good today. Let’s pick up some, too. Plus we need to get some bananas. Would you like some milk or cheese?
M. No, they are not my taste.
W: Then can you get a box of ice cream?
M: Sure, I love ice cream best.
W: I think that’s everything we need. Let’s go home and cook dinner.

Text 10
M: What is it like to travel in space? If you have ever watched space movies, you may knows one thing about it. Aurora Station is the world’s first space hotel. The US company Orion Span built the hotel. The hotel is around 12 feet wide and 35 feet long. It is going to welcome its first guests soon. It will fly 320 kilometers above the Earth. It can hold six people at a time. Two of them will be workers. They maybe former NASA astronauts. Each trip aboard the station will last for 12 days. Guests there will be able to do many interesting things. For example, they will see around 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. They can take part in research experiments such as growing food in space. Later, they can bring the food back to the Earth. These are the same things as astronauts usually do. Guests can also share what they see and hear with others on the Earth. They can have a video chat using a high-speed Internet connection. But each guest will have to pay at least $9.5 million. That’s really a large amount of money.

C 25. A 26. D 27. C
根据第四段中“The changed mRNA technology Karikó and Weissman invented was then used in vaccines (疫苗) that prevented the infection effectively. (Karikó和Weissman发明的改变后的mRNA技术被用于有效预防感染的疫苗。)”可知,Karikó和同事开发了mRNA技术,为mRNA疫苗的研制奠定基础。故选C项。
25. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“She had an ambition from early on to become a scientist. As a young adult, she became interested in mRNA, which carries DNA instructions to the protein-making engine of cells. She hoped that mRNA could play a key role in the treatment of various diseases. It became her mission to make her dream a reality to help cure patients. (她从小就立志要成为一名科学家。作为一个年轻的成年人,她开始对mRNA感兴趣,它携带DNA指令到细胞的蛋白质制造引擎。她希望mRNA能够在各种疾病的治疗中发挥关键作用。帮助治愈病人成为了她的使命。)”可知,Karikó从小就有成为科学家的目标,目标感非常明确。故选A项。
画线部分的上文“She was initially on track to become a full professor but received repeated fund rejections. (她最初有望成为一名正教授,但一再遭到基金拒绝。)”提到她遇到困难,画线部分的下文“she chose to continue her research (她选择继续她的研究)”提到她没有因为困难而放弃研究,再结合“the problems and challenges (问题与挑战)”可推知,此处指她没有因这些问题与挑战而气馁、灰心丧气,画线部分意思应该是“因……而气馁”,与Not discouraged by意思一致。故选D项。

B 33. B 34. D 35. A
根据第二段“In a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that people tend to turn down offers of “free money” as well as unusually high salaries or suspiciously cheap services because they seem “too good to be true.” The research bridges economics and psychology to explain why financial attraction can backfire.(在《个性与社会心理学公报》上发表的一项研究中,研究人员发现,人们倾向于拒绝‘免费的钱’、异常高的薪水或可疑的廉价服务,因为它们看起来‘好得令人难以置信’。这项研究将经济学和心理学联系起来,解释了为什么经济吸引力可能适得其反。)”可知,经济吸引力可能造成与预期相反的效果。故选B。
33. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Factors beyond the present moment may come into play. “Understanding that others’ noticeable overgenerosity may put us in their debt could also help explain people’s reluctance,” says Rachel McCloy, a psychologist studying decision-making at England’s University of Reading. The old maxim “there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ is clearly alive and well.”(当下以外的因素可能会起作用。英国雷丁大学(University of Reading)研究决策的心理学家Rachel McCloy说:‘了解别人明显的过度慷慨可能会让我们欠他们的债,这也有助于解释人们的不情愿。’‘天下没有免费的午餐’这句古老的格言显然是正确的。)”可知,倒数第二段引用“天下没有免费的午餐”这句话是为了作为支持性的论据,说明人们了解别人明显的过度慷慨可能会让自己欠他们的债。故选B。
34. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Another experiment found that high scorers on measures of distrust inferred more phantom costs. The researchers also showed how to minimize the effect: simply provide a reason for the deal.(另一项实验发现,在不信任测试中得分高的人推断出更多的虚幻成本。研究人员还展示了如何将影响降到最低:简单地提供一个交易的理由。)”可知,给出合理的解释可以减少“幻影成本”。故选D。
35. 主旨大意题。根据第二段“In a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that people tend to turn down offers of “free money” as well as unusually high salaries or suspiciously cheap services because they seem “too good to be true.”(在《个性与社会心理学公报》上发表的一项研究中,研究人员发现,人们倾向于拒绝“免费的钱”、异常高的薪水或可疑的廉价服务,因为它们看起来“好得令人难以置信”。)”结合文章主要解释了什么是“幻影成本”以及相关的的研究发现可知,A选项“Phantom Costs: Why Some Deals Seem Too Good to Be True(幻影成本:为什么有些交易好得不真实)”可作为最好的标题。故选A。

F. It is also highly popular due to the individualized effects on stress and anxiety,
G. Interestingly, the more cheerful the music was, the faster their heart rates were.
F 37. B 38. D 39. G 40. E
36. 空格后说“The mental health benefits from music can’t be argued.(音乐对心理健康的益处是毋庸置疑的)”,可知,选项承接下文说明音乐是有益处的,而受到欢迎。F选项It is also highly popular due to the individualized effects on stress and anxiety中的stress and anxiety照应了mental health benefits,因此F选项“它还因其对压力和焦虑的个性化影响而广受欢迎。”
37. 空格后说“However, for the same reason, music can be very beneficial if one is in pain”(然而,出于同样的原因,当一个人处于痛苦中时,音乐是非常有益的),However表转折,因此空格处为对音乐的负面评价,B选项Some experts say that music can be harmful if it is too loud中的harmful就是负面评价,因此B选项“一些专家说,如果音乐太大声,它可能是有害的。”
38. 空格前说“Many people enjoy relaxing music in the evening prior to going to bed.(许多人喜欢在晚上睡觉前听些轻松的音乐)”,选项承接上文说明其作用。D选项They say it can play a big role in calming the brain enough to sleep中的sleep和going to bed相呼应,因此D选项“他们说,它可以在很大程度上起到让大脑平静下来,从而有助于睡眠的作用。”
39. 空格前说“In one European study, participants listened to music as the researchers monitored their heart rates and blood pressure.(在欧洲的一项研究中,参与者听音乐,研究人员监测他们的心率和血压)”选项承接上文说明其结果,G选项Interestingly, the more cheerful the music was, the faster their heart rates were中的heart rates和前面的heart rates相照应,因此G选项“有趣的是,音乐越欢快,他们的心率就越快。”
40. 空格后说“It is what makes music so valuable.(这就是音乐如此有价值的原因)”,因此本段讲的是音乐对身体总的好处,E选项The implications of music on overall well-being are really impressive讲的是音乐对整体健康有好处,因此E选项“音乐对整体福祉的影响确实令人印象深刻。”

Every year for over a millennium (千年), fishermen have braved the subzero temperatures, biting winds and deep snow to search for an underwater fortune at Chagan Lake — one of the biggest freshwater 56 (lake) in our country.
Chagan is the only place in China 57 you can still find fishermen using a Mongolian fishing method that dates back centuries and has 58 (bare) changed over time. Once it fills up with fish, the net is pulled out of the water using a giant wheel 60 (turn) by Mongolian horses. The largest fish in the season’s first catch is believed to be lucky, and will go to the highest bidder at the auction (拍卖).
To ensure that this tradition can continue 61 damaging the lake’s ecology, fishermen keep nature in mind throughout the process. Avoiding the use of modem vehicles helps reduce the chance of polluting the lake water, and 62 number of fish that can 63 (catch) is capped to ensure that there will be fish for years to come.
Also, over the past few years, the money from the auction has been invested into protecting the lake and surrounding environment. And during the summer, private fishing without 64 (permit) is strictly prohibited. These preservative measures 65 (keep) the tradition alive for thousands of years and certainly will be passed on to future generations.
56. lakes 57. where 58. barely 59. to lower 60. turned 61. without 62. the 63. be caught 64. permission 65. have kept

“ you can still find fishermen using...” 故填where。
are drilled为谓语动词,所以空处应用非谓语动词形式;结合句意,“(lower) a 2-kilometer-long net into position underwater”是“Holes are drilled in the ice”的目的,用不定式作目的状语。故填to lower。
故填without。
the number of… 故填the。
故填be caught。
故填have kept。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.

The next day, as hope was beginning to fade, a rescue helicopter appeared.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The new sun rise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage. They crafted fishing hooks from bent wires found among their scattered belongings, cleverly attaching them to flexible branches to catch fish in the running river. The day was also marked by tireless efforts to signal for help, arranging branches and rocks into massive arrows that pointed toward their location, hoping these markers would catch the eye of a passing aircraft. Frank, with his keen observation skills, noticed patterns in the helicopter search patterns, suggesting they move closer to the riverbank during flyovers, increasing their chances of being spotted.
The next day, as hope was beginning to fade, a rescue helicopter appeared. The bright clothes they had hung between trees and the persistent smoke from their controlled fire served as a signal in the wilderness. As they were airlifted to safety, Frank and John looked at each other, their eyes reflecting a newfound appreciation for life, friendship, and the power of preparation and quick thinking in the face of disaster. The adventure was also a reminder that even in the most unexpected and dangerous circumstances, there is always a way out — if one remains calm, resourceful, and never loses sight of hope.
