Surrounded(围绕) by trees and filled with ponds(池塘) and pools ofwater. the Chinese
village of Ding Wuling should be covered with mosquitoes(蚊子), especially during the sum-
mer time. However, it is reperted that mosquitoes haven' been seen here for almost a century
The village with a long history is in the mountains of China's Fujian Province. There are
many special stone houses. But in recent years, the culture and buildings of this village have
been overshadowed(使失色) by a mystery-the absence(缺乏) of mosquitoes.
It's unclear whether scientists ever made a survey to get to know this mystery. But most of
the people in Ding Wuling believe it has something to do with the toad-shaped(瞻余形状的)
stone. They believe that the"god toad" prevents the mosquitoes from entering the village.
Another popular explanation(解释) has to do with the local villagers'habit of collecting
rubbish and burying(埋) it on the hillside near the.village. When Chinese newspaper People's
Daily first reported the mystery of this mosquito-free village , the local villagers hoped that ex-
perts(专家) could soon offer a certain answer to the mystery and put Ding Wuling on the tour-
ist map.
Unluckily, I haven't been able to find newer information about Ding Wuling and its mos

Scientists in Switzerland said that new devices(设备)helped a 40-year-old man walk

wounded part of the spinal cord.
After lots of training, Oskam can now walk a short distance(距离)with a cane(手杖)-
even when the devices are off. This might mean that Oskam's spinal cord seems to be makin
new connections.
