Chaudhary weaves(编织) together lengths of rope and grass collected from the nearby
riverbank in her village, skillfully shaping the materials into a gift box while instructing a
group of women to follow suit.
The ropes being used were once the lifeline for mountain climbers tackling Nepal's
mountains and were then cast away. Diverse measures to remove such discarded (废弃的)
materials have rocketed since 2o19, when the government launched Clean Mountain
Campaign. Around 14o,ooo tons of waste were collected on Mt. Everest alone, which were
handled accordingly, either securely buried or recycled.
Some waste is now finding fresh life, transformed by skilled hands like Chaudhary's into
items to sell, thanks to an initiative led by Acharya, the owner of a waste processing business
and an advocate for sustainable waste management. She has been working with the cleaning
campaign, aiming at mountains like Mt. Everest.
“Metal waste goes through the recycling process, but we weren't capable of recycling
these ropes and cooking gas cans,"Acharya says. It didn't occur to her that the waste which
couldn't be recvcled could be reused until she met Rai at an art exhibition and a solution
emerged.
Rai, a businessman dealing in craftworks, helped connect Acharya with Chaudhary and
her team of craftswomen in hopes of unlocking the economic value of the mountain waste.
With flexible hours, the project gives the craftswomen an opportunity to earn money even as
they maintain their household responsibilities.
“While this seems insignificant compared to waste in the mountains, it's a start. We can't
supply sufficient raw material with waste sorting and cleaning processes taking plenty of time
and money,"Acharya says, desperate to expand the program to involve more women and treat
more waste. But the progress has been slow. "We need investment to mechanize the cleaning
and processing of waste in the initial phase to provide the crafting team with enough materials
to meet their demand," she adds.
24. What were the ropes mentioned in Paragraph 2 initially intended as?
A. Tools for tying up weeds.
B. Villagers'basic necessities of life.
C. Raw materials for unique artworks.
D. Life-saving devices for mountaineers.
25.
What inspired Acharya's resolution of non-recyclable waste?
A. A journey to the rural area.
B. An encounter with a trader.
C. Information from a product launch.
D. Attendance at an academic conference.
26. What does Acharya expect to do based on the last paragraph?
A. Train more senior technicians.
B. Obtain a better reputation.
C. Drop waste washing procedures.
D. Bring in advanced equipment.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Chaudhary: An Eco-Minded Folk Artist
B. Nepali Women Are Turning Garbage into Crafts
C. Clean Mountain Campaign Has Already Taken Effect
D. A Headache: Mt. Everest Is Heavily Littered with Waste
C
“A fish out of water."“A bike without a chain."There are many metaphors for culture
shock, all of which attempt to describe the unique experience of being far from one's home
country and culture.
Scientists have studied culture shock for over a century. Rather than focusing on the
purely negative aspects, psychologists describe it as a process of stress and adjustment. The
first stage is the honeymoon phase, when we are filled with excitement about being in another
country. Eventually, as daily challenges arise, we enter a state of crisis and anxiety.
harboring(怀有) unfriendly feelings about the host culture. The longer we are immersed in
the culture, we adjust and recover from those negative feelings. Finally, after some time we
adjust even more and fully accept the new culture.
One of the factors that determine how we react to cultural stress is our personality. Not
surprisingly, extraverts(外向者) tend to have an easier time adjusting to new cultures. That
is because being in a new country means meeting many new people and spending a lot of time
around them, and extraverts thrive in these situations. But introverts simply prefer to be
alone after spending time in groups, and only have limited energy to spend in social settings.
Cultural intelligence, or CQ, also plays its part. Cultural intelligence is defined as the
capability of an individual to function effectively in situations characterized by cultural
diversity. It has to do with our interest in interacting with people from culturally diverse
backgrounds, and our ability to adapt to new cultural context. It is argued that the higher our
CQ. the lesser the effect of culture shock on our ability to cope in new situations.
Many effective coping strategies are interpersonal. A recent study found that relating to
others with empathy is significantly associated with lower stress levels abroad. The more we
are able to take on other people's points of view, the more positive our interpersonal
relationships and thus our adaptation to the stress of culture shock.
28. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. Explaining the quotes.
B. Raising an argument.
C. Introducing the topic.
D. Presenting an example.
29. How will a person feel the moment he arrives in a foreign country?
A.Anxious.
B. Thrilled.
C. Shocked.
D. Grateful.
30. Who will most probably be affected by the cultural shock?
A. An active boy interested in anything new.
B. A shy boy unwilling to socialize with strangers.
C. A quiet girl open to diverse cultural backgrounds.
D. A communicative girl fluent in the local language.
31. What is important for dealing with the cultural shock?
A. Lowering the stress level
B. Developing self-awareness.
C. Analyzing the cause of discomfort.
D. Understanding others with syrnpathy.

Shakespeare described sleep as "the main course in life's feast, and the most nourishing".
New research suggests it may also be a key nutrient in defending us against Alzheimer's
disease.
Poor sleep has long been linked to Alzheirner's, but the relationship is similar to the
chicken-and-egg puzzle. It isn't clear which came first. During deep sleep, the brain produces
slow electrical waves and flushes out neurotoxins(神经毒素) including amyloid(淀粉样蛋白)
and tau(微管蛋白),two indicators of the disease.
Studies have shown that even one night of terrible deep sleep can lead to an increase of
amyloid. A week of disrupted sleep can raise the amount of tau, which is especially insidious
(潜伏的) because over time it can strangle(抑制) neurons from the inside out.
A study in the Annals of Neurology found that a sleep pill called suvorexant could reduce
amyloid and tau in middle-aged adults with no cognitive problems. The two-night trial showed
that amyloid dropped 10% to 2o%, and a key form of tau 10% to 15% in people who received
a high dose compared to a placebo(安慰剂) group. But these effects need to be studied over
longer periods of time-including in older adults at higher risk of Alzheimer's. But the study
suggests that improving sleep quality among middle-aged adults could help reduce the risk of
developing Alzheimer's later in life.
What has puzzled neurologists, however, is that some people with high levels of amyloid
who may appear to have Alzheimer's based on brain scans nonetheless function normally.
Neurologists assume that this is because some people have higher levels of "cognitive reserve"
which enables them to function normally despite neurological damage. But there's another X
factor, which scientists have struggled to identify. A new study suggests it may be sleep, and
in particular deep sleep.
"Think of deep sleep almost as a life raft that keeps memory afloat, rather than memory
getting dragged down by the weight of Alzheimer's disease," says Matthew Walker, a
neuroscience professor at UC Berkeley.
32. What is the relationship between sleep and Alzheimer's disease according to the new
research?
A. Inadequate sleep will indicate Alzheimer's disease
B. The disease may be prevented if we can sleep well
C. Neurotoxins produced during sleep cause the disease.
D. A good sleep will raise the indicators of the disease.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. It's too early to use the sleeping pill to treat Alzheirner's.
B. It's advisable that adults turn to suvorexant to sleep well.
C. Suvorexant is a desirable pill to improve our sleep quality.
D. The amount of Amyloid and tau decreased due to placebo.
34. What is Paragraph five mainly about?
A. Researchers' great confusion about the high levels of amyloid.
B. Low level cognitive reserve resulting in abnormal brain function.
C. Potential determinants related to the possibility of Alzheimer's.
D. Neurologists' assumption about our brain function and damage.
35. Why dose Matthew Walker make the comparison in his remarks?
A. To advocate a healthy lifestyle among adults.
B. To emphasize the significance of sleep quality.
C. To demonstrate the crucial role of our memory.
D. To detail the damage brought by Alzheimer's.

The Low-carbon Lifestyle Around Me
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I
was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to
play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I
became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my
responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of
having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's,with its delicate tulips(郁金香).
Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong
wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a
thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the
bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my
chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were
unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our
neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of
her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away
at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with
the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris(碎片) spread everywhere. I could only irnagine
how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear,"It is more blessed to give than to receive",
and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella's family returned in their car.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella's sorrow for her lost garden.

Text 1
M.Could you start wrapping the cups?
W:Sure. Have you packed up the books?
M.Oh, soon. I just finished these pots.
Texi 2
M: Is this the book you're looking for? I found it in the classroom
W. No, I think I left mine in the cafeteria.
M: But you checked the table before we left
W:Oh, I just remembered I was reading it in bed before I went to sleep last night
Text3
W: How much did you pay for those sunglasses?
M: The original price was $ 2oo, but they were on sale, so I got 3o% off. Not bad!
Text 4
M: Where are the files for the Brookfield account, Sarah?
W:I haven't seen them, but you might want to ask someone in the record office. I'd call Janet or Sam if I were
you.
M: Hmm, I don't know Janet, but Sam is always helpful
Ter5
W. You grew up speaking two languages, didn't you?
M. Not exactly, I didn't learn French till we moved to Paris when I was five.
W. So, you spoke German and French when you were five?
M: Yeah, and then my parents sent me to an English school
Texi6
W: We are a software company, and for this position, we are looking for someone good at making a sale.
M: That shouldn't be a problem. Though graduating in engineering, I have over 20 years of sales experience.
W: Very impressive. Are you good at speaking in front of crowds?
M:I once spoke in front of 40 people and had no problems then. I am actually excited to speak in front of so
many people.
W.Glad to hear that
Text 7
M. Annabelle, you saw A Secret Place the other day, didn't you?
W:I did. Interesting, but the plot's very inconsistent - it falls apart here and there.
M: There isn't a line you can follow all the way through. I can see what the director is trying to do- it contains
too many details, but it just doesn't come off (达到效果).
W: Well, it's a brave attempt. But I still prefer the original novel.
M: Same here. What do you think of the ending?
W:I'd have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been for that powerful rock music, which was obviously supposed to
emphasize what was happening on screen. But I still came close to crying for that final three minutes.
Text8
M: Hi. I bought the laptop here just about a month ago, and now I can't turn it on
W. May I ask what happened?
M:I accidentally dropped it.
W.Oh, no wonder it can't respond.
M. Now, I'd like to return it and purchase another model. Here's my receipt
W:I'm sorry, but you bought the laptop over 3o days ago, so we can't refund(退款) your money.
M: Is there anything I can do at this point?
W. Well, you could send it to the factory. Since the laptop was bought less than a year ago, they can repair it
for free. And they offer half price if you want to exchange it for a new one.
M: That's good. How can I reach them?
W:Let me give you their phone number. You can also make a request online, but I'm not sure you can do that
You don't have access to the Internet, am I right?
M: Yeah, you're right.

M: In today's program, I'm with Sheila Forbes, a sports psychologist who helps professional footballers prepare
mentally for their performance. Welcome, Sheila.
W.Thank you.
M: So Sheila, how would you define your role?
W: Basically, I have to make sure they understand what I do and show them what they'll get out of it. I train
them how to structure their thinking, to be more confident about themselves, and not to be influenced by the
apparent confidence of opposing players
M. So what does a sports psychologist need?
W: Well, I've worked in various sports, none of which I've ever performed in. What is needed, though, is that
you understand the mental demands of those sports, and are able to adapt in your work. But if you're not
honest to your clients about what you realistically can and can't do, you won't progress very far.
M: Is there anything you dislike about the job?
W: Well, some people suggest that we are simply doing this for financial gain and realistically can't help top
sports people improve in their game. But all we're doing is ensuring that athletes achieve a consistently high
level of performance. There's a constant shift in environments, but I find that the techniques you learn are
highly adaptable, as long as you're creative enough to do that.

M: Hello, everyone, just a reminder that this week is Challenge Week all across the country, with a full calendar
