“Believe in yourself.” “It’s okay to be different.”
These are a few of the encouraging messages and words of wisdom callers hear when they call the Peptoc Hotline. It’s part of a public art project created by teachers Jessica Martin and Asherah Weiss with students at West Side Elementary School, in Healdsburg, California. Since starting in late February, the hotline has quickly become a global sensation (全球轰动的事).
This was a surprise. “We planned this project to be just for our little town,” Martin told TIME for Kids. After all, the community had been through so much. Wildfires. COVID-19. And yet, Martin says of her students, “They’re resilient (适应力强的) and keep their happiness.” The Peptoc project celebrates this through art.
The Peptoc project includes two parts: encouraging posters and the Peptoc Hotline. To come up with ideas for posters, Weiss and Martin showed students work by other artists. And they asked questions: How can I support someone else? How has someone else supported me? Together, kids have put up more than 150 posters around Healdsburg so far. “Kids just ran with it,” Weiss says. “It didn’t take a lot to get them going.”
Next Martin invited kids to record talks for the telephone hotline. Ask a kid for advice, she says, and “they can come up with three or four different ideas.” Their quick thinking “is also a testament (证明) to the teachers and families that have been helping them over the past few years.”
In its first six weeks, Martin says, the Peptoc Hotline got nearly 5 million calls from around the world. “Peptoc is so popular because most people need something to make them feel good in these times,” fifth-grader Darin Juric told TFK. For Martin and Weiss, the project shows students that small acts can have a big influence. “I think kids need to understand that they have great power,” Martin says. “It really does just take a few words of kindness to encourage others.”
4. What do we know about the Peptoc Hotline?
A. It has been run for many years.
B. It was started by a school teacher alone.

D. It hoped to help students around the world at first.
5. What does the Peptoc project celebrate?

6. What does Martin think of the kids?
A. They are getting creative. B. They need more support.
C. They should learn from famous artists. D. They should spend time helping others.
7. What can we infer about the project from the last paragraph?

I was said to be the worst student in my class and my family thought I was hopeless. I had to repeat the sixth grade. At that time a new teacher, Miss Sadia, came to our school.
One day after class, she noticed that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began to talk to me. It was just a normal conversation: After that day, she gave me much attention and it made me feel special. I started to go all out because she gave me the feeling that someone believed me, and my grades started to improve in her subject.
Months later, she moved into a house near my home. We would walk home together after start school. Her constant support helped me, especially in my studies, as I knew she would check my grades both in her subject and the other subjects. I finally came second in my class.
Then, after the sixth grade, she started to drift apart but still kept a check on me. By the time I was in the seventh grade, she hardly spoke to me, but by then I had become the best in my class. When I left school, I was out of touch with her as she never answered the phone when I called her.
Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day, our paths crossed again. I met her at a wedding. I could not help asking her,“Why did you stop talking to me?”
“You are a clever boy. I wanted you to be a tree standing on your own roots, not depending on others. Now here you are and I feel proud of you. You are your inspiration and do not need to look for a shoulder,” she said. I could not say anything, but I smiled. I’ll always thank her.

I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble fitting in at your new school. Such problems are quite normal. Perhaps the following suggestions may be helpful.
First, I think you may need to communicate with your classmates as much as possible. In this way, you will get to know each other better. Second, it might be a good idea for you to take part in more activities, which usually involve teamwork and interactions with other students and are therefore good for developing friendly relationships. Lately, faced with some tough problems, you might consider asking your teachers, who can usually offer you some sensible suggestions.

Next, Martin invited kids to record talks for the telephone hotline.

One Moore Elementary school teacher is showing students the importance of communication through “shout-outs”. Third Grade Moore Elementary Teacher Lindsey Winders said a shout-out is a compliment(称赞) that students can say or write down. “Like, ‘hey I noticed you doing a really great job solving your math problems yesterday. I wanted to make sure you know that I saw you do that,’” Winders said.
Winders said she makes sure she is giving shout-outs to her students every day. “I might write them a sticky note, or write them a quick little note in their planner. I might just say it to them on their way into the classroom or on their way out of the classroom, but most importantly I try to do it every day,” Winders said.
In addition to the compliments, Winders has the students greet(问候) each other every morning during morning meeting. She will have students give examples to the class of how to communicate in different settings(场景). Third grade student Nayelli Moranchel said she had given at least six shout-outs this year. “It makes me happy, because they always write something back,” Moranchel said.
Recently, Winders took it one step further and wrote a personalized note on each of her students’ desk. “In our classroom, sometimes it can be challenging for me to give a compliment or a shout-out to each and every one of them in a way that feels equal(平等的) and valuable at the same time. So I decide that there is no better way than leaving a note on their desk that can stay for as long as they wants it to,” Winders said.
Winders said it is encouraging when she sees her students copy the act, and give each other compliments without her guidance(指导).
