Rebecca is a wildlife camerawoman from the UK. While filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean, she saw something that made her 1 : hundreds of dead birds. They had died 2 they accidentally ate plastic. The beaches on the Pacific islands used to be some of the most beautiful places in the world, but now they are 3 with plastic toys, bottles, pens - every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca 4 she had to do something. In her hometown of Modbury in southwest England, she asked local shopkeepers if they could do something to help. She asked them to _ 5 using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in Britain. The numbers are 6 . Britain uses nearly 17 billion plastic bags each year. These bags can take hundreds of years to 7 because they are made of chemicals. Each year, the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca's surprise, the shopkeepers 8 and Modbury became the first plastic bag-free town in Britain. Instead of plastic, shops now offer reusable cotton bags or biodegradable (可生物降解的)bags. Other towns 9 Modbury's example and more towns around Britain and around the world are becoming plastic bag- free.
Now, the "bag for life" is part of the national culture, and the task of 10 the use of plastic bags has become law: Since October 2015, all shops in the UK must charge five pence for each plastic bag used by each shopper, no matter how much they spend. It's not enough, but it's a start.

When you find math hard, you usually ask teachers or parents for help. But now, doctors can help you too!
On Oct 8, Shanghai opened a special clinic (17 %) for children who have problems with math and spatial (空间的)understanding. On that day, six students went there with their parents.
At the clinic, doctors checked how well the students understood math and their spatial skills, and then made plans to help them learn better. They even had special educational games with VR and AR technologies to help students.
A recent study found that about 8.97 percent of children at primary school on the Chinese mainland have trouble with math and spatial skills, reported Shanghai Daily.
Among them, 11.57 percent are in low grades,10.07 percent are in middle grades and 4.76 percent are in high grades.
The clinic is open every Tuesday. It's very popular with days getting fully booked. Special clinics for helping with learning problems are becoming common in China, especially in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Nanjing.
However, experts remind parents that these clinics may help students, but they can't magically turn them into top students. It's more important to have realistic expectations.
Shi Ping from Tianjin Children's Hospital told China Daily that putting too much pressure on kids can sometimes make learning harder. Parents should think about how they teach their kids and consider making some changes.
After all, just as an expert said, "Doing well in school shouldn't be the only thing that matters in a child's life."

13. How is the clinic doing?
A. It is welcomed by parents. B. Few people know about it.
C. People don't trust it. D. It isn't doing well.
14. What advice does hi Ping give to parents?
A. Focus more on children's mental health. B. Encourage their children to work harder.
C. Change how they teach their children. D. Children sometimes need some pressure.
15. What do the experts think about the clinic?
A. It doesn't help much with math problems. B. People shouldn't expect it to solve all problems.
C. Parents and children depend too much on it. D. Working hard on math weighs more than going to a clinic.

On December 3rd, 2023, Fukuoka International Open Marathon Championship (锦标赛) started, and Chinese players Yang Shaohui and Feng Peiyou took part in the competition. In the end, Yang Shaohui won the runner-up with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 9 seconds, setting a new Chinese marathon record.
Yang Shaohui was born in 1992 in the countryside of Dali, Yunnan. He has started helping his family with farm work since he was young. And after going to school, like other children in the mountains, he hiked long mountain roads back and forth (往返地) between school and home.
At the age of 17, Yang Shaohui, who had not practiced long-distance running, won the championship in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter races in the county, and later he went to Dali to compete. His fate also changed, and he was liked by the coach. One year later, he successfully joined the provincial team.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Yang Shaohui once again fought for China and achieved breakthrough results. 2 hours, 14 minutes and 58 seconds was the best result in the Chinese men’s marathon Olympics, and the 19th place was also the best result achieved in the Chinese men’s marathon. Yang Shaohui did not disappoint the Chinese people. Yang’s success in Fukuoka International Open Marathon Championship made him get a men’s marathon ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. We are looking forward to his success in Paris.
Yang Shaohui once said, “Life is a marathon. As long as you keep a powerful heart and keep on running, the result will never let you down.”

Hydrogen (氢) is the lightest element in the world, and there’s more hydrogen in the world than you think – for example, water has hydrogen elements. Some think it could be a big deal in the energy industry. It burns 21 (easy) and can power things that need a lot of heat, like furnaces (熔炉). Unlike wood or fossil fuels, it doesn’t make CO2 that 22 (warm)the climate.
How can we use hydrogen?
Hydrogen has many uses, from making plastics to purifying (炼制) oil. When used as energy, it burns cleanly and can replace fossil fuels, 23 (reduce)greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放). Some companies, like Cleveland-Cliffs in the US, started to use hydrogen as a fuel source, with plans to mix it with methane (甲烷).
In this way, the fuel can burn greenhouse gas and leave no 24 (pollute). Hydrogen can also make electricity through 25 (chemistry)reactions between hydrogen and oxygen. The only byproduct is water – it’s a very clean resource. Using hydrogen for energy is hardly a new idea. According to a study released in February 2023, there have been about 56,000 hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles on the road.
Why isn’t everyone using it?
Hydrogen comes in different 26 (form), and its cleanliness depends on how it’s made. 27 (连词)hydrogen is naturally found in the universe, the one we need for energy is not common. Companies have to get hydrogen from other sources, mainly from fossil fuels, which often leads to pollution.
However, the cleanest, “greenest” way to make hydrogen is possible, but very 28 (inexpensive). People aren’t ready 29 (pay)a lot of money for this. Besides, it is also a big “chicken-and-egg” problem. People won’t buy hydrogen-powered equipment until a steady supply of hydrogen is 30 (avail). But companies don’t want to invest to make that hydrogen unless they’re sure they’ll have a lot of customers.

US company SpaceX successfully completed its fifth test flight of Starship on Oct 13. This helped SpaceX get closer to making reusable rockets.
The 122-meter-tall Starship has two parts: the Starship spacecraft and the Super Heavy rocket. The rocket's 33 engines (引擎)gave Starship a strong push. About seven minutes after launch, the two parts separated at around 70 kilometers above Earth. Then, the rocket's booster(助推器)made itself “stand up" in the air and started to fall slowly. At that point, two big mechanical arms from the launch tower, like "chopsticks", "caught" the booster.
Starship is the world's most powerful rocket ever made. It is made to send astronauts to the moon, Mars and beyond. SpaceX's engineers have been working on it and testing it for many years. They made sure both the booster and the tower met thousands of standards. If standards had not been met, the booster would have been directed to drop in the Gulf of Mexico.
SpaceX has been growing quickly since it started in 2002. This is partly thanks to its "fail fast, learn fast" working style. For example, Starship's first three test flights failed due to problems like explosions or losing contact. However, these failures helped engineers get data and make progress. This is different from the traditional way organizations like NASA operate. They spend a lot of time planning for possible problems before a launch.
SpaceX already plans to do a sixth flight, which will likely happen soon.
Choose the answer:
31. How is Space X's fifth test flight different from the earlier ones?
A. It successfully recycled its rocket booster. B. It successfully sent its spacecraft into space.
C. It built 33 engines inside the Starship. D. Its spacecraft and booster separated successfully.
32. What is the main purpose of the Starship rocket?
A. To send satellites into space. B. To do scientific experiments in space.
C. To send astronauts to the moon, Mars and beyond. D. To send materials to the International Space Station.
33. What would have happened to the booster if it had not returned successfully?
A. It would have blown up in the air. B. It would have lost communication.
C. It would have hit the launch tower. D. It would have fallen into the ocean as planned.
34. Why could SpaceX succeed so quickly?
A. SpaceX planned carefully before launching. B. SpaceX had the best engineers.
C. NASA provided support to SpaceX. D. SpaceX learned quickly from past failures.
