Born in England on January 6, 1955, Rowan Atkinson is a world-famous
British comedian, who graduated from University of Oxford.
Atkinson has been regarded as the master of comedy for his humorous
performances, and enjoys great numbers of fans worldwide. He becomes best known
for the role of Mr. Bean he played, who is an internationally recognised comedy
character. Mr. Bean, sometimes, does look foolish, but his stories inspire us to be
optimistic about our life. What impresses me most is the way Atkinson shows his
sense of humour through rich and funny body language, which makes people laugh.
Atkinson has won many awards for his excellent skills of acting as a comedian
and is honoured as another master of comedy after Chaplin.

Alice did the only thing that came to mind: asking for the help of strangers
online. She asked them to spread the story of the package. But after she came back
from Hawaii. there was still no answer. She felt very anxious. Then she posted the
picture of the snow globe with a picture of the young lady in the airport online and
told more friends about it. She was waiting for the reply with anxiety. At last, a
stranger told her about the address of the young lady. She felt relieved at the moment.
Then she told the good news to her boyfriend, Rico, and made a decision that they
would give the package to the lady in person.
One day, Katie heard a knock on the door . It was a young girl named Alice
and a young man named Rico, with a big smile on their faces. After the young girl
told her about their visit, Katie was so moved that she burst into tears. She told Alice
and Rico, the snow globe was the most precious gift that her grandma and grandpa
left to her. She expressed her deep gratitude to Alice and her boyfriend for their action.
Without their kindness, she would have lost the gift forever.

A mother, Carrie Cort, 51, from Sussex, and her nine-year-old son have been named the
UK’s most environmentally friendly family after winning an award for their environmental
achievements.
Now every aspect of her life is environmentally friendly, from her son Adam’s birthday
parties to her clothing, and she recycles everything from empty pens to milk bottle tops.
“Changing our family lifestyle to green has saved us around £11,000 every year, which has
given us more financial stability,” Carrie says. “Living green has made us healthier and I feel
younger now. It is fun seeing what you can make with unwanted or broken things. Growing
your own food is great exercise, good for wildlife, and the food is much more nutritious and
tastier.”
“My concern for the way we humans are treating the planet was really roused when
Adam was born. When he arrived, I suddenly had this huge, greater awareness of the kind of

where people can bring everything to be fixed. Her recycling program helps people reuse
wastes. Toothpaste tubes, for example, which Carrie sends to the Philippines, are turned into
purses by an organization. “My goal is to inspire more people to lead greener, more
environmentally friendly lives, to enable us to live in greater harmony with nature, now and
for future organizations. I achieve this using various Sussex Green Living communication

Competitive eating has become big business. The International Federation of Competitive
Eating (IFOCE) holds events for competitive eating all around the world. One of the most
popular contests (竞赛) is held every 4th of July on Coney Island in New York. Nathan’s Hot
Dog Eating Contest started in 1916 and the event has been dominated (占据优势) by Takeru
Kobayashi. The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in
12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row.
The main types of food eaten in the contests are fast food. Hot dogs, chicken wings,
pickles, corndogs and pizza are main foods of the contests. The contests usually last from
around 8 to 12 minutes. Now most of the competitors are men, but there are also women who
take part in competitive eating.
Being large and overweight isn’t necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. The
biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach.
Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this.
Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be
hand to mouth speed.
The IFOCE has very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive eating.
Competitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are
allowed to enter. They also advise against any type of home training. There has been much
talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFOCE
has talked about that with the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not agree to it at
present.

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last
night. Artificial intelligence may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this
by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers
from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate
images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US,
which consisted of brain scans from four participant as they each viewed a set of 1,000 photos.
The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). The AI then
learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data:
when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain
activities with the photos. Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from
the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the
person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an
image of a very blurry airplane. Then , it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model
and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final
images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to “decipher
the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the
future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thought and dreams
or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.
32.What makes Stable Diffusion different from previous AI models?
A.It can turn text into images.
B.It can reproduce images based on human’s brain scans.
C.It can learn from a large amount of date.
D.It assist people recollect their previous memory.
33.How did the researchers test the AI if it can recreate image?
A.On additional brain scans from the same participants when they saw photos.
B.They analyzed changes in blood flow.
C.They used functional magnetic resonance imaging.
D.They analyzed the date.
34.What is the meaning of “decipher” in the last paragraph?
A.Know about. B.Break down.
C.Take over. D.Become ill.
35.Which can be the best title of this passage?
A.A new study.
B.Artificial Intelligence.
C.Functional magnetic resonance imaging.
D.Visualizing our dreams.

36 Maybe it’s a walk in a forest, having a small garden or a few household
plants. One study showed that patients at a hospital who had plants in their rooms reported
less pain, lower blood pressure, less tiredness and less anxiety than patients without plants.
Studies have also shown that plants and gardening increase productivity and levels of
serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for uplifting mood. “Rather than staying on the
past or worrying about the future, plant care provides a feeling of current accomplishment.
37 ” says Gayle Weill, a therapist in Connecticut.
Like any new skill or hobby, taking care of houseplants comes with a learning curve.
Anyone starting to care for plants should be patient and allow themselves time to learn the
basics. 38
Before you bring home a load of botanicals, it’s not about how many plants you have,
but rather how you interact with them. For instance, are the plants in areas where you spend a
lot of time? Do you care for them daily? If you have a small space or aren’t sure how much
time you will, starting with a lot of plants could be overwhelming. 39 It can
engage you by its smell or color that creates a positive mood response.
Remember that while indoor gardening can help with stress and relaxation, it’s not a

Alice is an ordinary woman with an amazing heart. One day, she was flying from Tampa
to Hawaii for a meeting. Her boyfriend, Rico, came to see her off. When they slowly made it
to the safety check, they noticed the airport security(安保人员) was asking a young lady to

The lady begged to place the package in Lost and Found Department instead of throwing
it away. Sadly, it was not allowed. The lady, after much begging, finally dropped her package
and was heading to her gate. Alice, after realizing the lady was nearly in tears, knew
something was wrong. Then, it was her turn to pass through security.
While hugging Rico goodbye, she asked him to quietly go through the litter bin and pick
up the deserted (丢弃的) package to see what was inside of it. Alice was truly trying to help
the lady.
After waving a final goodbye to his girlfriend, Rico went straight to the litter bin to get
the package.
