Unit 6 At one with nature When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid. I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone. Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse. The project required each team to develop a hypothesis(假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students. When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what. After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic. We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.  ________________________________________________________________ One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.  ________________________________________________________________ 【参考答案】 考场作文分析 评卷老师点评 We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. ①Though I wanted to share my ideas with him fully, I failed to do so for fear that I would hold him back. ②I just kept nodding when he asked me whether it was OK to do this way or that way. I thought ③it was impossible to persuade him into accepting my views, so I didn’t want to waste our time to discuss. ④I started to wait to leave immediately we arrived at the place, and so did he. I just hoped that the presentation day could come earlier. One day I got word ⑤that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I should visit him in any case. He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits. ⑥I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. We began to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard work ⑦paid off and Dr. Henderson was very satisfied with our wonderful findings. My father, casting a brief glance in my direction through the reflective surface of the rearview mirror, offered a comforting remark, “Alex, this journey presents itself as an auspicious occasion for you to reconnect with your maternal and paternal elders.” The vehicle made a deliberate turn onto a well-trodden dirt path, one that I recognized all too well. We were progressively distancing ourselves from the urban confines, moving further away from the digital tendrils of the Internet, and even more so from the stimulating environment of the computer camp. “Brighten up, Alex!” exclaimed my mother, her voice carrying a note of optimism. “There is every likelihood that another opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of coding will arise shortly, perhaps even within this very summer season.” As the car continued its journey, I was acutely aware that all my companions in the realm of programming would be engaged in the act of coding at the computer camp this week, while I, on the other hand, was to be ensconced in the rural setting of a farm. I uttered not a single syllable, and in due course, the vehicle came to a halt in the driveway of my grandparents’ abode. A slender row of trees materialized into view, their presence a stark contrast to the urban landscape I was leaving behind. I had once taken pleasure in visiting the farm during the spring intermissions before my immersion into coding camps... and before the realization of the extent to which my actions could lead to chaos and disorder. The engine of the car had not yet ceased its hum when my grandmother, with an agility that belied her years, sprang towards us. From my vantage point in the backseat, I observed as my father and mother embraced my grandmother. I, in turn, reluctantly extracted myself from the vehicle, feeling as though the very force of gravity had grown unusually intense. “You both are certainly deserving of a respite,” my grandmother was saying, her words directed towards my parents. “Alex will be in good stead — he has always held a fondness for the farm.” She spoke in the past tense, implying that Alex had once cherished the farm. During the midday meal, my grandmother inquired, “Why such a somber countenance, Alex?” I maintained my silence. Why indeed? It seemed as though they were acting in ignorance of the events that had transpired during my previous visit. For a fleeting moment, my gaze met with my grandmother’s. Could I muster the courage to question her regarding the goats’ destruction of all the flora belonging to our neighbor, Mr. Jackson, an incident that occurred because I had inadvertently lifted the latch and allowed the goats to roam free? Was Mr. Jackson still seething with anger towards me for the considerable damage I had inadvertently caused him? “I am quite alright,” I muttered, my voice barely audible. “It is merely the absence of the coding camp this week that I am lamenting. Coding is an activity at which I excel.” My mother offered a nod of understanding. “Ah, that does sound disheartening, but the farm will undoubtedly offer you a different kind of experience.” After lunch, I was on my own when, out of nowhere, there’s Mr. Jackson. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Instead, Mr. Jackson yelled, “Great to see you here, Alex! I need your help with a lamb’s birth.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (2024·江苏南通·模拟预测)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 “You don’t want that one,” the shelter volunteer said. “He’s broken.” “Broken?” I asked. Had I heard her correctly? The minute I’d walked into the animal shelter’s cat room, the little black creature had been one step behind me, my shadow. I wasn’t an expert, but he seemed friendly. “He’s been a stray (流浪的动物) since birth,” the volunteer explained. “He doesn’t like anyone—not other cats, not people. It’s nearly impossible for him to be fully domesticated (驯养).” “I want to adopt him,” I said. “Really? But why?” she asked, obviously confused. “Because he needs a home,” I said. Then under my breath, “and because I’m broken too.” I filled out the paperwork and left with him that afternoon. Back at home, I let him out of the carrier so he could explore. I watched as this little cat smelled every inch of the house. Eventually, his curiosity satisfied, he settled in my lap. I reached out a hesitant hand to pet him. He purred (猫发出呜呜声). “Look, I’m going to be honest with you,” I said. “I’ve only been able to love two people in my entire life—my brother and one friend.” Though he wasn’t looking at me, the cat’s ears were pointed in my direction. I knew he was listening. “You shouldn’t expect me to love you. I don’t know how.” I continued. He lowered his head and closed his eyes, his body growing heavy. Then he drifted (进入某种状态) off to sleep. It took me a week to come up with a name for him. I finally settled on Mr. Bojangles —Bo for short—after the song about a homeless man who, even after being arrested, remained happy and optimistic. The name fit this cat. Even when he was “behind bars” at the shelter, Bo had been meowing and purring, like he was trying to cheer me up. As he adjusted to life with me, he got more talkative. More often than not, I found myself talking back: “Meow!” “Good morning, Bo.” “Meow!” “Yes, I’m home.” “Meow. Meow!” By the time a month passed, we’d settled into a routine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The word “love” seemed too big for Bo—until the day I came home and collapsed into bed, weeping. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 1 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! When Dr. As I walked toward the barn, I thought about how he might still be upset with me for the goat incident, which happened because I accidentally unlatched the gate, letting the goats wander into his garden and devour everything in sight. Despite this, I couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved that he was the first person I saw. I hoped that he had forgiven me for the chaos that I had unintentionally caused. Instead, Mr. Jackson yelled, “Great to see you here, Alex! I need your help with a lamb’s birth.” Surprised by his enthusiasm, I wondered if he had forgotten about the damage that I had caused or if he genuinely needed assistance. As I approached him, I noticed the urgency in his eyes, which suggested that he really did require my help. Since I had always been good with technology and coding, assisting with something as organic as helping a lamb be born felt like a completely new challenge, one that I was unexpectedly eager to take on, despite my initial reluctance to be at the farm. The experience of helping bring a new life into the world was both challenging and rewarding, and it helped ease some of the tension between Mr. Jackson and me. 3.词汇激活 行为类   ①走向:walk toward/move toward/head toward/walk in the direction of ②思考: think about/ponder over ③接受,开始:take on/embark on/undertake 情绪类   ①感到宽慰:feel relieved/feel eased/get some relief ②惊讶的:surprised/amazed/shocked 【高分句型1】I hoped that he had forgiven me for the chaos that I had unintentionally caused.(由第一个that引导宾语从句作hoped的宾语;由第二个that引导的定语从句) 【高分句型2】As I approached him, I noticed the urgency in his eyes, which suggested that he really did require my help.(由as引导的时间状语从句;由which引导的非限制性定语从句;由that引导的宾语从句作suggested的宾语) (2024·江苏南通·模拟预测)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 “You don’t want that one,” the shelter volunteer said. Meow!” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 By the time a month passed, we’d settled into a routine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The word “love” seemed too big for Bo—until the day I came home and collapsed into bed, weeping. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【参考范文】 By the time a month passed, we’d settled into a routine. I’d feed him, play with him, and then we’d settle down on the couch for a nap. He followed me everywhere, from room to room. And I didn't mind. In fact, I kind of liked it. I was still cautious about getting too attached. I mean, how could I let myself love a cat when I'd been unable to love anyone else? But Bo was different. Somehow, he just understood. The word “love” seemed too big for Bo—until the day I came home and collapsed into bed, weeping. I don't even remember what had set me off that particular day. All I knew was that I felt like my heart had been shattered into a million pieces. Bo jumped up onto the bed and curled up next to me. He didn't say anything. He just rested his head on my chest and purred. And somehow, his presence was enough. In that moment, I realized that Bo had become more than just a cat. He was my friend, my companion—and maybe, just maybe, he loved me, too. 续写线索:日常相处——作者仍有顾虑——作者悲伤——Bo 陪伴——作者感悟 词汇激活 行为类 ①跟随:follow/trail after ②哭泣:weep/burst into tears ③陪伴:accompany/be with 情绪类 ①谨慎的:cautious / wary ②破碎的:shattered / broken [高分句型 1].
