And only seven hours left of a 19-hour flight before I would arrive in South Africa for my third volunteer trip in three years. But this time it was different. I’d be there alone for a whole year, without friends or family. Plus, I had one challenge other volunteers fighting AIDS in Africa didn’t have — I was in a wheelchair. At eight years old, I was paralyzed (瘫痪的) from the waist down in a car accident. I spent months in a hospital, learning how to use a wheelchair, how to get up from the floor and how to dress myself. Basically how to live my life as independently as possible. After graduation from college, I made a year- long commitment to Lily of the Valley Children’s Village, outside Mophela, South Africa, where 90 percent of the children are infected with HIV. I would see to the kids’ medical needs and teach math and English. Those first few weeks were hard, harder than anything I had done before. I forced myself to keep trying. I needed to prove myself. But how could I tell if I was doing any good? One night, a big storm hit. I rolled out of my cottage the next morning and my chair lurched (突然倾斜), the wheels sinking into mud. I grasped the wheels tight and pushed hard. The chair wouldn’t move. All of my worst worries seemed to be coming true. I was stuck, hopelessly stuck. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw children running toward me. Two of the oldest grabbed the handlebars and the others pushed me forward. The wheels came free. The kids shouted with delight. When I said “Thank you!”, they laughed, “You help us. We help you.” That echoed in my ears all day. The next morning, the kids were waiting to push me through the mud to homework club. And the day after that, it became our little routine. The more they helped me, the easier it got to help them. The kids and I bonded. I wasn’t alone during my year in Africa. Not at all. I had reached out to the people I was assisting, and they, in turn, became my support. I was aware, more than ever, that anyone, even in a wheelchair, can make a difference. 24. What was the author’s unique challenge during this volunteer experience? A. Overcoming physical limitations. B. Adapting to a new cultural environment. C. Managing a long-term solo commitment. D. Dealing with the harsh weather conditions. 25. How did the author feel in the first few weeks in South Africa? A. Disappointed and wanting to give up. B. Satisfied with the progress made. C. Uncertain about the effectiveness of his help. D. Frustrated by the children’s lack of cooperation. 26. What was the turning point in the author’s relationship with the children? A. The children’s voluntary assistance. B. The author’s initial arrival in the village. C. The author’s first teaching session. D. The author’s struggle with the wheelchair. 27. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The struggle of adapting to a new environment. B. The transformative power of mutual support. C. The challenges of living with a physical disability. D. The impact of education on poor children. C Researchers have long known that the brain links kinds of new facts, related or not, when they are learned about the same time. For the first time, scientists have recorded routes in the brain of that kind of contextual memory, the frequent change of thoughts and emotions that surrounds every piece of newly learned information. The recordings, taken from the brains of people awaiting surgery for epilepsy (癫痫), suggest that new memories of even abstract facts are encoded (编码) in a brain-cell order that also contains information about what else was happening during and just before the memory was formed. In the new study, doctors from the University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt University took recordings from a small piece of metal implanted in the brains of 69 people with severe epilepsy. The implants allow doctors to pinpoint the location of the flash floods of brain activity that cause epileptic happening. The patients performed a simple memory task. They watched a series of nouns appear on a computer screen, and after a brief disturbance recalled as many of the words as they could, in any order. Repeated trials, with different lists of words, showed a predictable effect: The participants tended to remember the words in groups, beginning with one and recalling those that were just before or after. This pattern, which scientists call the contiguity effect, is similar to what often happens in the card game concentration, in which players try to identify pairs in a row of cards lying face-down. Pairs overturned close are often remembered together. The way the process works, the researchers say, is something like reconstructing a night’s activities after a hangover: remembering a fact (a broken table) recalls a scene (dancing), which in turn brings to mind more facts, like the other people who were there. Sure enough, the people in the study whose neural (神经) updating signals were strongest showed the most striking pattern of remembering words in groups. “When you activate one memory, you are reactivating a little bit of what was happening around the time the memory was formed, and this process is what gives you that feeling of time travel,” said Dr Michael J. Kahana. 28. What does “contextual memory” refer to according to the text? A. Memories about the past facts. B. Unrelated facts linked together. C. Ideas and feelings around new facts. D. New facts encoded into brain alone. 29. What is the purpose of studying patients with epilepsy? A. To track the brain activity of contextual memory. B. To find the brain activity causing epilepsy. C. To show the formation of memory. D. To test the new cure for epilepsy. 30. What do the underlined words “contiguity” mean in paragraph 4? A. Implication. B. Similarity. C. Contrast. D. Neighborhood. 31. What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A. The feature of the research method. B. The category of the research subjects. C. A brief summary of the research process. D. A further explanation of the research results. D The blanket of pollution resulting from carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels is already warming the planet and causing more extreme weather disasters. One way to keep climate change from getting worse is to take some of those historic emissions out of the atmosphere. More than 200 scientists have signed onto a letter pushing for “responsible” research into ways to trap planet-heating carbon dioxide in the world’s oceans. Oceans already do that for us, absorbing and holding around 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere. What if humans could supercharge that ability? That’s what scientists want to better understand, along with any side effects that might come with messing with the chemistry of our oceans.Startups are already developing new technologies to sequester(隔绝)more CO2 in the sea. But there’s still a lot we don’t know about what impact that might have or what strategies might be most successful, the letter says. These are all pretty early efforts, and hacking the high seas is no replacement for preventing greenhouse gas emissions from accumulating in the atmosphere by getting rid of fossil fuels. Some environmental advocates are also worried about new CO2-filtering technologies harming marine life. The letter today calls for controlled field trials to evaluate carbon removal strategies, along with a third-party review of the results. There also need to be safety measures in place to address any “unintended or harmful consequences” and inclusive policies to engage different stakeholders(利益相关者).Some big names in climate and environmental sciences have signed on. “I have seen these massive declines in ocean health...Doing nothing is unethical(不道德的) essentially,” says Débora, Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology department chair at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who signed the letter released today. When it comes to studying new ways to use oceans to tackle climate change, she says,“ We need to at least figure out the risks and the benefits, see whether we can help resolve the problem we have created.” 32. What is the letter aimed at? A. Preventing carbon dioxide emissions. B. Advocating a fossil-fuel-free lifestyle. C. Promoting the heating of carbon dioxide. D. Pushing for carbon removal technologies. 33. What can be inferred from the previous efforts? A. The most effective way to trap CO2 has been found. B. Hacking the high seas can replace getting rid of fossil fuels. C. The technology has caused severe side effects messing the oceans. D. New technologies for trapping CO2 in the sea are already available. 34. What does the letter demand according to paragraph 4? A. Make polices for target groups. B. Prepare safety measures in advance. C. Review the results from three aspects. D. Evaluate side effects with uncontrolled trials. 35. What is Débora’s attitude toward the studies of new ways? A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Dismissive. D. Doubtful. Sustainable and eco-friendly travel has become imperative for modern explorers. I had been working on a register for over two weeks when they decided that I was ready to work as a shop assistant. I remember the feeling of excitement because this was something new, and nervousness because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t even know whom I would be working with. So many thoughts came floating into my head as I walked from my car to the store. “What if the customers don’t like me? What if I can’t handle this job? Will I remember everything?” With my mind filled with all these what ifs, I walked back to the break room and put my purse in my locker. Then, with my shaking hands and upset stomach, I walked back to the front of the store and met with Theresa at the service desk where Theresa greeted me warmly. “We are going to have you work with Vicki today. She is a friendly lady and takes charge of the men’s department. She can teach you how to communicate with the customers. So let’s take a walk back to the men’s department, and she can get you trained in,” Theresa said. “Okay,” I replied with nervousness. Walking for what seemed like a long time, we finally reached our destination. Vicki, a young lady in her early thirties, came bouncing out to receive us with a light- hearted walk and a brilliant white smile. We must have caught her a little off guard because she stopped, stared at us for a moment, and said, “Hi Theresa!” “Hey, Vicki! I’d like you to meet Kayli. She is going to be working with you for the next couple of weeks.” Theresa introduced me to this young lady. “Hi, Kayli,” she replied with more enthusiasm than I had expected. “Well, I’ll leave it up to you, Vicki.” Theresa happily replied, then turned and walked away, leaving Vicki and me standing there. In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 南昌三中2024-2025学年度上学期10月考试 高三英语试卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 Who is William probably talking to? Many people are worried about this happening to a large number of wild animals. They spend time campaigning to help preserve wild life. One of the best-known preservationists is Caroline Smith. She is an attractive young woman who works for the National Grand Zoo. Caroline Smith’s vast knowledge of animals makes her a frequent guest on TV talk shows. She has been on the Kyrie Belle Show over forty times. She explains common errors in thinking about wild life. For example, gorillas aren’t the violent, cruel and rude animals they appear to be, they are really quite shy. Monkey that smile aren’t as happy as they seem. In fact, a monkey’s ear-to-ear smile means watch out. Snakes really help nature by eating harmful insects, so people should try to protect them. A 25. C 26. A 27. 根据第一段“Plus, I had one challenge other volunteers fighting AIDS in Africa didn’t have — I was in a wheelchair. (此外,我还有一个其他在非洲抗击艾滋病的志愿者没有的挑战——我坐在轮椅上)”可知,作者在南非的志愿者经历中,特殊的挑战是他的身体残疾,这与其他人相比是一个独特的挑战,需要克服身体局限性。故选A。 根据第四段“Those first few weeks were hard, harder than anything I had done before. I forced myself to keep trying. I needed to prove myself. But how could I tell if I was doing any good? (最初的几个星期非常艰难,比我以前做过的任何事情都要艰难。我强迫自己继续尝试。我需要证明自己。但我怎么知道自己做得好不好呢?)”可知,作者在南非的最初几周非常艰难,他强迫自己继续试,并且想知道自己是否真的做得好,这表明他不确定自己的帮助是否有效果。故选C。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段“Out of the corner of my eye, I saw children running toward me. Two of the oldest grabbed the handlebars and the others pushed me forward. (我从眼角看到孩子们向我跑来。两个年纪最大的抓住车把,其他人推着我往前走)”和第八段的“That echoed in my ears all day.(那些话在我耳边回响了一整天。)”以及最后一段的“And the day after that, it became our little routine. The more they helped me, the easier it got to help them. The kids and I bonded. I wasn’t alone during my year in Africa.( 第二天,这就成了我们的日常。他们帮我越多,我就越容易帮到他们。孩子们和我很亲密。我在非洲的那一年并不孤单。)”可知,孩子们自发的帮助是作者与南非孩子们关系转变的关键时刻。作者的轮椅陷入泥潭,孩子们跑来帮助他时,他们之间的关系开始有了质的变化。孩子们的行动不仅帮助作者摆脱了困境,也象征着他们之间互助的开始。故选A。 根据最后一段“The more they helped me, the easier it got to help them. The kids and I bonded. I wasn’t alone during my year in Africa. Not at all. I had reached out to the people I was assisting, and they, in turn, became my support. I was aware, more than ever, that anyone, even in a wheelchair, can make a difference. B。 C Researchers have long known that the brain links kinds of new facts, related or not, when they are learned about the same time. C 29. A 30. D 31. 由第一段中“For the first time, scientists have recorded routes in the brain of that kind of contextual memory, the frequent change of thoughts and emotions that surrounds every piece of newly learned information. (科学家们首次记录了这种上下文记忆在大脑中的路径,即围绕每一条新学习信息的思想和情绪的频繁变化)”可知,“contextual memory”指的是围绕新事实的想法和感受。故选C项。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。由第一段中“For the first time, scientists have recorded routes in the brain of that kind of contextual memory, the frequent change of thoughts and emotions that surrounds every piece of newly learned information. (科学家们首次记录了这种上下文记忆在大脑中的路径,即围绕每一条新学习信息的思想和情绪的频繁变化)”,第二段“The recordings, taken from the brains of people awaiting surgery for epilepsy (癫痫), suggest that new memories of even abstract facts are encoded (编码) in a brain-cell order that also contains information about what else was happening during and just before the memory was formed. (这些记录取自等待癫痫手术的人的大脑,表明即使是抽象事实的新记忆也以脑细胞顺序编码,其中还包含关于记忆形成期间和之前发生的其他事情的信息)”和第三段中“The patients performed a simple memory task. They watched a series of nouns appear on a computer screen, and after a brief disturbance recalled as many of the words as they could, in any order. (患者进行了一项简单的记忆任务。他们看着一系列名词出现在电脑屏幕上,在短暂的干扰后,他们以任何顺序回忆起尽可能多的单词)”可知,研究癫痫患者,让其进行一项简单的记忆任务(干扰后,以任何顺序回忆起尽可能多的单词),是为了记录了这种上下文记忆在大脑中的路径,换句话说是为了追踪上下文记忆的大脑活动。故选A项。 由第三段中“The participants tended to remember the words in groups, beginning with one and recalling those that were just before or after. (参与者倾向于分组记住单词,从一个单词开始,并回忆之前或之后的单词)”可知,在记忆时被实验者会回忆一个单词之前或之后的单词,即回忆临近的单词;再结合第四段中“This pattern, which scientists call the contiguity effect, is similar to what often happens in the card game concentration, in which players try to identify pairs in a row of cards lying face-down. Pairs overturned close are often remembered together. (这种模式,科学家称之为contiguity效应,类似于纸牌游戏集中时经常发生的情况,即玩家试图识别脸朝下的一排纸牌中的成对纸牌。翻得很近的一对纸牌经常被铭记在一起)”讲翻得很近的一对纸牌经常被铭记在一起,这也是表明离得近容易被记住,划线词意为“与某处临近的地方(Neighborhood)”,可得出科学家称之为“邻接效应”。故选D项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。由第五段“Sure enough, the people in the study whose neural (神经) updating signals were strongest showed the most striking pattern of remembering words in groups. “When you activate one memory, you are reactivating a little bit of what was happening around the time the memory was formed, and this process is what gives you that feeling of time travel,” said Dr Michael J. Kahana. (果不其然,研究中神经更新信号最强的人在群体中表现出最显著的单词记忆模式。Michael J. Kahana博士说:“当你激活一个记忆时,你就重新激活了记忆形成)”可知,第五段主要是对研究结果的进一步解释。故选D项。 D The blanket of pollution resulting from carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels is already warming the planet and causing more extreme weather disasters. D. But some bad eating habits of teens are really serious and need to be changed. It is said that students have difficulty in concentrating in class if they don’t have breakfast, causing bad results in their school performances. So it’s important to make a reasonable life plan and obey it. For some teenagers, eating too much fast food is a habit that they can’t get rid of. Containing too much sugar and fat, fast food contributes to various diseases. It’s advised to quit consuming fast food frequently. Besides, most of the teenagers prefer meat to fresh vegetables and fruits so that their bodies lack vital nutrients. Therefore, it matters that we keep a balanced diet, which helps build our bodies. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. I had a smile on my face. But as a matter of fact, I had butterflies in my stomach. I expected the usual uncomfortable silence that always happens when two strangers meet and are supposed to be friends right away, but I was wrong. Vicki was very comfortable to be around and easy to talk to. She felt my nervousness. “Take it easy. Just be yourself and you will do a good job,” Vicki smiled at me. Then she explained different styles and trends, and how to assist customers. Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. I recited the information of many clothes and couldn’t wait to serve the customer on my own. That day I received ten customers and all of them showed satisfaction with me. I regained my confidence and no longer doubted myself. That day, I ended up learning more than just the tasks of a fashion’s worker. I learned to communicate, and to just be myself. Vicki has taught me that it was okay to be myself, and for that, I will be forever grateful. 词汇激活 行为类 ①预料:expect/anticipate ②帮助:assist/help ③获得:receive/get 情绪类 ①满意:satisfaction/content ②感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】【高分句型1】 I expected the usual uncomfortable silence that always happens when two strangers meet and are supposed to be friends right away, but I was wrong.(运用了that引导的定语从句和when引导的状语从句) 【高分句型2】Vicki has taught me that it was okay to be myself, and for that, I will be forever grateful.(运用了第一个that引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
