However, this is an event that serves as a platform for unknown and often local performers, so expect the line-up to be filled with artists who are ready to give a surprise but aren't usually part of the mainstream scene. Montreal International Jazz Festival City: Montreal, Canada Founded: 1980 Recorded Attendance: 2,000,000 The world's largest jazz festival closes the streets of Montreal for ten days in an annual tradition. In 2004, it earned a Guinness World Record for its massive attendance of 1,913,868 people for its 25th-anniversary edition. In more recent years, this international celebration has only continued to expand itself, keeping a consistent attendance from noon to midnight of 200,000 attendees per day in all of its capacity. Pol’and’Rock City: Czaplinek, Poland Founded: 1993 Recorded Attendance: 1,000,000 In the open air, this was a festival village with massive food stalls (货摊), and free to attend. Pol'and'Rock was founded and remains a homage to the spirit and ideals of the original Woodstock Festival that has remained active regarding its mission of giving back. This Polish festival shines a spotlight on artists who are not famous. Furthermore, Pol'and'Rock features recreational activities such as a morning yoga lesson and quite a few contests. Rock In Rio City: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Founded: 1985 Recorded Attendance: 700,000 Brazil has been hosting the biggest rock bands in the world since 1985 in Rio de Janeiro. Rock In Rio's first event was a big one, opening with more than one hundred thousand people. This isn't common for a first-time. But given the line-up that they had, there was no other possible outcome for them. The line-up included Queen, Rod Stewart, and Yes, so it's safe to say that it was a legendary show that led the event toward becoming one of the most anticipated ones in the world. 1. Which festival has the longest history? A. Rock In Rio. B. Pol'and'Rock. C. Donauinselfest. D. Montreal International Jazz Festival. 2. What do Donauinselfest and Pol'and'Rock have in common? A. They have a duty to give back. B. They offer free food to visitors. C. They are intended for jazz lovers. D. They feature lesser-known artists. 3. How was the Rock In Rio's first event? A. Popular. Now, though, it’s being blamed for causing an airline to remove a popular snack from its inflight offerings. Korean Air has announced that it will no longer serve ramyeon instant noodles (辛拉面) to passengers traveling in economy class on long flights. “In the case of ramyeon service, burn accidents occur frequently due to hot water,” the airline said in a press release. “In economy class, flight attendants must move several cups of noodles filled with hot water at once, and passengers are crowded together, so the risk of burns has been high.” The airline explained that the change to its inflight snack service on long-distance routes is in response to the increasing trend of turbulence. According to the airline, the number of turbulence occurrences more than doubled in 2024 compared to 2019. “To enhance passenger satisfaction, a self-service snack bar is also available on long flights. We are committed to ensuring passenger safety and will select snacks on each route based on different customer preterences,” the release added. Those snacks include sandwiches, corn dogs, pizza, hot pockets, cookies, chocolate, fruits and so on. Korean Air, which was ranked the 11th best airline in the world for 2024, is one of the many airline companies thinking about the long-term risks of turbulence, which experts say is increasing because of climate change. In 2022, Paul Williams, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading in the UK said that Industry models predicted a double-or three-fold increase in turbulence in the coming years. “Typically, on a transatlantic flight, you might expect 10 minutes of turbulence. I think that in a few decades this may increase to 20 minutes or to half an hour.” he said. 4. Why does Korean Aur make the announcement? A. To satisfy passengers special needs. B. To prevent burn accidents occurring. C. To avoid frequent airplane turbulence. D. To reduce flight attendants’ workload. 5. What do we know about Korean Airs self-service snack bar? A. It serves on selective routes. B. It is set up by some passengers. C. It will close down temporarily. D. It's full of diverse snack choices. 6. What does Paul Williams mainly want to say? A. Airplane turbulence will become severer. B. Airline companies should prevent turbulence. C. Transatlantic flights prove unsafer than before. D. Climate change is a major crisis facing humans. 7. What is the text type? A. A research paper. B. A travel guideline. C. A news report. D. A formal notice. 4. B 5. D 6. A 7. I think that in a few decades this may increase to 20 minutes or to half an hour. 根据文章第一段“Korean Air has announced that it will no longer serve ramyeon instant noodles (辛拉面) to passengers traveling in economy class on long flights.(大韩航空公司宣布,将不再为长途航班经济舱乘客提供辛拉面。)” C。 C On the shores of North Africa, ancient cities have stood for thousands of years. The columns of Carthage, in modern- day Tunisia, are a reminder of the once busy Phoenician and Roman port, and along the coast in what's now Libya, lie the majestic ruins of Sabratha's Roman amphitheater (圆形剧场) close (perhaps too close) to the sea. But extreme weather events and rising sea levels mean that both, and around 190 other amazing heritage sites that line Africa's coasts, will be at risk of severe flooding and erosion (侵蚀) more easily in the next 30 years, according to a recent study. In this latest study, Nicholas Simpson of the University of Cape Town and his co- workers mapped out a total of 284 heritage sites that are recognised or under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, in the 39 countries that comprise the African coast. They calculated the likely percentage area of a site exposed to a “once- in-a- century” extreme coastal flooding event. “In the 1970s, what used to be a once-ın-a-100- year event happened once in 100 years, ” Simpson says, “ but what we' re seeing is that a once- in-a-100- year event might be happening once in 10 years going forward when climate crisis is worsening. ” Sea levels have been rising at a faster rate over the past three decades compared the past century, the research says. It also found that 56 sites are currently in danger if a “once- in-a- century” flood struck, and that by 2050, if greenhouse gas emissions continue, this number could increase to 198 sites. According to the research, North Africa has the largest number of threatened sites—from the ancient ruins of North Sinai that stretch between the Suez Canal and Gaza, to Tipasa, an ancient Phoenician trading post in present- day Algeria. Simpson feels apprehensive about this, hoping that identifying such heritage sites might “raise alarm bells for climate risk for heritage in Africa”. The study notes that its findings will help prioritize at-risk sites and highlight the need for immediate protective action. “There's an important message of loss and damage from climate change to heritage, which we hope will mobilize greater intent and action, ” says Simpson. 8. What makes it easier for the African heritage sites to suffer according to the text? A. Their locations. B. Their structures. C. Human destruction. D. Their building materials. 9. What does the research focus on? A The frequency in which climate crisis happens. B. The current physical condition of the heritage sites. C. The probability of natural threats to the heritage sites. D. The previous influence of flooding on the heritage sites. 10. What does the underlined word “apprehensive” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Excited. B. Curious. C. Concerned. D. Pleased. 11 What does the author most probably talk about next? A. The success in repairing the sites. B. Some measures to protect heritage. C. Climate change damage to the sites. D. The future of the African heritage. A 9. C 10. C 11. 根据第一段中“The columns of Carthage, in modern- day Tunisia, are a reminder of the once busy Phoenician and Roman port, and along the coast in what's now Libya, lie the majestic ruins of Sabratha's Roman amphitheater (圆形剧场) close (perhaps too close) to the sea.( 迦太基的圆柱,在今天的突尼斯,让人想起曾经繁忙的腓尼基和罗马港口,在现在的利比亚沿海,有萨布拉塔罗马圆形剧场的雄伟废墟,靠近大海(也许太近了)。)”以及第二段“But extreme weather events and rising sea levels mean that both, and around 190 other amazing heritage sites that line Africa's coasts, will be at risk of severe flooding and erosion (侵蚀) more easily in the next 30 years, according to a recent study.( 但根据最近的一项研究,极端天气事件和海平面上升意味着这两个地方,以及非洲海岸沿线约190个其他令人惊叹的遗产,将在未来30年更容易遭受严重的洪水和侵蚀。)” 故选A项。 根据第二段“But extreme weather events and rising sea levels mean that both, and around 190 other amazing heritage sites that line Africa's coasts, will be at risk of severe flooding and erosion (侵蚀) more easily in the next 30 years, according to a recent study.( 但根据最近的一项研究,极端天气事件和海平面上升意味着这两个地方,以及非洲海岸沿线约190个其他令人惊叹的遗产,将在未来30年更容易遭受严重的洪水和侵蚀。)”以及第三段中“In this latest study, Nicholas Simpson of the University of Cape Town and his co- workers mapped out a total of 284 heritage sites that are recognised or under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, in the 39 countries that comprise the African coast. They calculated the likely percentage area of a site exposed to a “once- in-a- century” extreme coastal flooding event.( 在这项最新的研究中,开普敦大学的尼古拉斯·辛普森和他的同事们在构成非洲海岸的39个国家中,共绘制了284个被联合国教科文组织世界遗产中心认可或正在考虑的遗产地。 根据划线单词句子中“…hoping that identifying such heritage sites might “raise alarm bells for climate risk for heritage in Africa”.( 他希望确定这样的遗产可能“为非洲遗产的气候风险敲响警钟”。)” 根据最后一段“The study notes that its findings will help prioritize at-risk sites and highlight the need for immediate protective action. “There's an important message of loss and damage from climate change to heritage, which we hope will mobilize greater intent and action, ” says Simpson.( 该研究指出,它的发现将有助于优先考虑有风险的地点,并强调立即采取保护行动的必要性。 D Muscle contraction hardening is necessary for enhancing strength and it also enables rapid reactions in living organisms. Taking inspiration from nature, a team of researchers from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has successfully created an electronic artificial muscle that changes between soft and hard states while also possessing the remarkable ability to sense forces and deformations. Dr Ketao Zhang, a lecturer at QMUL and the lead researcher, explains the importance of variable-hardness technology in artificial muscle- like actuators (执行器). “Empowering robots, especially those made from flexible materials, with self-sensing capabilities is a key step towards true bionic (仿生) intelligence,” says Dr Zhang. The advanced artificial muscle developed by the researchers exhibits flexibility and stretchability similar to natural muscle, making it perfect for integration into complicated soft robotic systems and adapting to different shapes. With the ability to bear over 200% stretch along the length direction, this flexible actuator shows exceptional durability. By applying different voltages (电压), the artificial muscle can rapidly adjust its hardness, achieving continuous hardness changes over 30 times. Its voltage-driven nature provides a significant advantage in terms of response speed over other types of artificial muscles. Additionally, this wonderful technology can monitor its deformation through resistance changes, removing the need for additional sensor arrangements and simplifying control mechanisms while reducing costs. This flexible variable-hardness technology can be widely used, ranging from soft robotics to medical applications. The integration with the human body opens up possibilities for aiding individuals with disabilities or patients in performing necessary daily tasks. By integrating the self-sensing artificial muscle, wearable robotic devices can monitor a patient's activities and provide resistance by adjusting hardness levels, facilitating muscle function restoration. “While there are still challenges to be addressed before these medical robots can be employed in clinical settings, this research represents an important step towards human-machine integration,” highlights Dr Zhang. “It provides a blueprint for the future development of soft and wearable robots.” 12. What is a feature of the muscle developed by the researchers from QMUL? A. It responds slowly in speed. B. It is able to stretch flexibly. C. It functions without electricity. D. It is equipped with extra sensors. 13. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about variable-hardness technology? A. Its working principles. B. Its design inspirations. C. Its potential applications. D. Its future improvements. 14. What can we infer about the research from Dr Zhang? A. It is of great significance. B. It lacks experts’ responses. C. It hardly meets challenges. D. It has been applied to hospitals. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. A Promising Device — an Artificial Muscle-like Actuator B. He is a gentle man with a kind smile and he is known for his love of bookstores and his daily walks through the city’s historic district. One evening, as he was returning home from a park, Mr. Arthur realized with a start that his wallet was missing. He went back over his path, searching everywhere in the park. His heart sank with each passing minute, as the wallet contained a cherished photo of his late wife, which he carried as a treasure. The sun began to set, casting long shadows on the streets. Mr. Arthur felt a deep sense of loss and despair. Meanwhile, a young man named John was walking home from his favourite job at the local library. As he passed by the bookstore where Mr. Arthur had visited that day, he noticed something lying in the corner of the sidewalk. Curious, he picked it up and found it to be a worn leather wallet. John opened the wallet, hoping to find some identification to return it to its owner. He took a deep breath when he saw the cash and the personal items inside. Sensing the importance of what he held, he decided to wait at the spot where he found the wallet, hoping that the owner would come back to look for it. As darkness enveloped the city, Mr. Arthur, with a heavy heart, made his way back to his favourite bookstore, one last hope in his eyes. His steps were slow and tired, but his determination was strong. As he approached the bookstore, he saw a figure standing under the streetlight, holding something in his hands. “Excuse me, young man. I was wondering if you happened to see an old wallet?” Mr. Arthur asked in a low voice. The young man’s face lighted up and tended to hand the wall et to the old man. However, he was a little hesitant because he wasn't sure if the wallet actually belonged to the old man. Sensing the young man’s concern, Mr. Arthur decided to prove he was the owner. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ John smiled and said, “No need, Mr. Arthur. If you happened to pick up my wallet, you could find a photo of an elder woman in it. She’s my wife. I love her so much, but she has already passed away.” It seemed like Mr. Arthur was lost in memories, and his eyes became moist. Feeling touched and sympathetic, John took out the photo and handed it to the old man. As soon as Mr. Arthur saw the photo clearly, he kissed it with tears streaming down his face, “Thank you, young gentleman. It means too much to me. Please take the cash in my wallet. In this way I hope to express my thanks.” John smiled and said, “No need, Mr. Arthur. I’m John and I’m just glad I could help.” John was relieved to return the wallet to Mr. Arthur. The old man persisted in giving John rewards. John gently shook his head and said, “The person who says thank you should be me. Thank you, sir, for reminding me to cherish my loved ones.” Then John left, leaving Mr. Arthur standing alone, with a contented smile on both faces. 词汇激活 行为类 ①交给/递给:hand it to/give it to ②表达:express/convey ③拒绝:shake his head/decline/refuse politely 情绪类 ①感动的:touched/moved ②感谢:thanks/gratitude 【点睛】[高分句型1]. 4 Why does Korean Aur make the announcement? C On the shores of North Africa, ancient cities have stood for thousands of years. A. The frequency in which climate crisis happens. B. The current physical condition of the heritage sites. C. The probability of natural threats to the heritage sites. D. The previous influence of flooding on the heritage sites. 10. What does the underlined word “apprehensive” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Excited. B. Curious. C. Concerned. D. Pleased. 11. What does the author most probably talk about next? A. The success in repairing the sites. B. Some measures to protect heritage. C. Climate change damage to the sites. D. The future of the African heritage. D Muscle contraction hardening is necessary for enhancing strength and it also enables rapid reactions in living organisms. A It responds slowly in speed. B. It is able to stretch flexibly. C. It functions without electricity. D. It is equipped with extra sensors. 13. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about variable-hardness technology? A Its working principles. A Science Blueprint — the Future Development of Robots C. An Unsolved Challenge — Perfect Human-Machine Integration D. A Bionic Breakthrough — Self-Sensing Electric Artificial Muscles The Art of Effective Public Speaking Public speaking is a skill that can greatly enhance your personal and professional life. ___16___ Whether you’re presenting at a conference, conveying an idea to your boss, or giving a toast at a wedding, the ability to speak confidently and persuasively is invaluable.
