A
(2023·浙江德清高级中学校考)Eliana Yi dreamed of pursuing
piano performance in college, never mind that her fingers could barely
reach the length of an octave (八度音阶).Unable to fully play many
works by Romantic-era composers, including Beethoven and
Brahms, she tried anyway—and in her determination to spend hours
practicing one of Chopin’s compositions which is known for being
“stretchy”,wound up injuring herself.
“I would just go to pieces,” the Southern Methodist University
(SMU) junior recalled.“There were just too many octaves.I wondered
whether I was just going to play Bach and Mozart for the rest of my
life.”
The efforts of SMU keyboard studies chair Carol Leone are
changing all that.Twenty years ago,the school became the first major
university in the U. S. to incorporate smaller keyboards into its music
program, leveling the playing field for Yi and other piano majors.
Yi reflected on the first time she tried one of the smaller
keyboards,“I remember being really excited because my hands could
actually reach and play all the right notes,” she said.Ever since,“I
haven’t had a single injury, and I can practice as long as I want.”
For decades, few questioned the size of the conventional piano. If
someone’s hand span was less than 8.5 inches—the distance considered
ideal to comfortably play an octave—well, that’s just how it was.
Those who attempt “stretchy” passages either get used to
omitting notes or risk tendon (腱) injury with repeated play.Leone is
familiar with such challenges.Born into a family of jazz musicians, she
instead favored classical music and pursued piano despite her small
hand span and earned a doctorate in musical arts.
A few years after joining SMU’s music faculty in 1996,the
decorated pianist read an article in Piano and Keyboard magazine about
the smaller keyboards. As Leone would later write, the discovery would
completely renew her life and career.
In 2000,she received a grant to retrofit a department Steinway to
accommodate a smaller keyboard, and the benefits were immediate. In
addition to relieving injury caused by overextended fingers, she said,
it gave those with smaller spans the ability to play classic compositions
taken for granted by larger-handed counterparts.
Smaller keyboards instill many with new confidence. It’s not their
own limitations that have held them back, they realize; it’s the
limitations of the instruments themselves. For those devoted to a life of
making music,it’s as if a cloud has suddenly lifted.

(2023·山东潍坊调研)As winter arrives, the problem of fogged-
up car windscreens becomes more pressing for drivers.Anti-misting
sprays (喷雾剂) are one way to deal with such fogging. But they need
frequent reapplication.Another approach is to fix within the thing to be
demisted a set of electrically powered heating wires. But because of the
visual distraction (分心) created, that doesn’t work for a car’s front
windscreen.
Iran Hachler and Dimos Poulikakos of the Swiss Federal Institute
of Technology in Zurich have, however, come up with another way of
warming something up to stop fog forming.Their new material is a
coating ten nanometres (纳米) thick. It is flexible, easily made using
existing processes, and can be applied as a coating to glass or plastic,
or inset inside such materials. Its demisting properties are powered by
sunlight.
In effect,it is a gold sandwich. The“bread”of this sandwich is a
pair of layers (层),top and bottom,of a chemical material,each
three nanometres thick. The filling is a four-nanometre deep golden
material. The whole structure lets visible light pass unlimitedly, while
absorbing invisible light and transforming them into heat.It is the filling
that warms the glass.Gold acts as a medium in the heating process. The
network will now absorb heat if left in the sunshine. The top and bottom
layers boost that absorption.
Glass coated with Mr. Hachler’s and Dr. Poulikakos’s invention
is,they claim, four times more effective at preventing fog than an
uncoated surface. It absorbs around 30% of solar radiation incident upon
it—which,on a sunny day, increases the temperature of what it is
applied to by around 8 ℃.On a cloudy day, that temperature rise is
closer to 3 ℃-4 ℃.But in either case the enhancement is sufficient both
to remove any fog that has formed and to prevent new fog forming.
The next step,Mr. Hachler says,is to find the product’s best
market. Even though gold is used, the cost of adding this extra one is
low. For the two inventors, though, the idea might prove a gold mine.

When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admitted I was not a
bit happy and excited at all. I thought it would require interactions with
others. But later, I was astonished when I got to experience it
firsthand.
Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was
a peer review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I
preferred to work independently. But when I got involved, I found in
the experience, I had done something that I thought was nearly
impossible—it made my poetry better. My partner informed me of my
mistakes and told me where I could give more detail.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to
the class. I’ve always loved public speaking but I thought with Summit
Learning, I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The peer
activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and
inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could
possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This
style of learning brings a positive and hard-working culture that allows
us to push our boundaries and keep going. It creates a sense of
community since we are all working towards a similar goal.
As an active boy, I have always been ahead and advanced, but
in a normal classroom, there are restrictions on what I can do. With
Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move
ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my
work and pursue my goals.
Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and
change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been
one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself
going back to a normal classroom.

Most of us would like to be more creative, but we assume there is
little we can do about it. Psychology professor K. Anders Ericsson
claims that with enough practice, any of us can become experts.
However, he is quick to add that this requires a specific kind of
practice that Ericsson calls “deliberate practice”: that is, pushing
beyond one’s comfort zone and setting goals that are above one’s
current level of performance. He says he has yet to find the limits on
being successful and he doesn’t believe them to be real.
Ericsson has looked primarily at artistic and athletic skills, but
can these findings apply to creativity? Most experts agree that even if
most people cannot hope to become creative geniuses, they can learn
to become more creative through practice.Psychologists claim that there
are actually two levels of creativity, which they refer to as “Big C”
and “small c”. Big C creativity applies to breakthrough ideas, ones
that may change the course of a field or even history.
Small c creativity refers to everyday creative problem solving, like
creating a new recipe or improving a process, which psychologists
subdivide further into similar and different thinking. Similar thinking
involves examining all the facts and arriving at a single solution. In
contrast, different thinking involves coming up with many possible
solutions. What most people think of as creativity generally involves
different thinking and can be taught, practised and learnt.
Even with practice, different thinking alone cannot make one
creative, however. Scott Barry Kaufman, a cognitive psychologist,
says that most creative people share one personality quality: openness
to new experience.Since this quality and these processes have been
identified, less creative people can try to emulate them. Normally,
we tend to reproduce what we already know because creative ideas
move us into unfamiliar territory involving risks and following the usual
behaviors is comfortable.
Moving outside of our comfort zone, engaging indeliberate
practice and tolerating contradictory ideas, risk and failure are all
things we can learn to do better. It is unlikely that doing so will
transform any of us into creative geniuses, but it does have the
potential to increase our level of creativity.

Scientists say the plant enset,an Ethiopian staple (主食),could
be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change. “This
is a crop that can play a really important role in addressing food security
and sustainable development,” said a university professor in
Awasa,Ethiopia.
Enset,or “false banana”, is a close relative of the banana but
is consumed only in one part of Ethiopia. The banana-like fruit of the
plant is inedible (不宜食用的),but the stems and roots can be
processed to make porridge and bread.
However,Ethiopia is isolated (隔离) by dry lowlands, which are
unsuitable for enset to grow. And the procedures for enset raising and
preparing require special knowledge. Therefore, despite its wild
relatives distributing across Africa, enset is only used as a crop in
Ethiopia and has never been widely adopted elsewhere.
Using agricultural surveys and modeling work, scientists found
the crop could potentially feed more than 100 million people and boost
food security in Ethiopia and other African countries.
Study researcher Dr. James Borrell, of the Royal Botanic
Gardens, said planting enset as an alternative crop for tough times
could help support food security. “It’s got some really unusual
characteristics that make it absolutely unique as a crop,” he said.
Reaching ten meters tall, as few as 15 enset plants can feed a person
for a year. Also,it has flexible harvest times, stores well, and is
relatively drought and disease tolerant. All these features have earned it
the name “the tree against hunger”.
There is growing interest in seeking new plants to feed the world.
Nearly half of all the calories we eat come from three species—rice,
wheat, and corn. “We need to diversify the plants we use globally as a
staple because all our eggs are in a very small basket at the moment,”
said Dr. Borrell.
